Two of the finest Test playing nations in the cricketing world, Sri Lanka and Australia up against each other for an exciting face-off in the longest format of the game to lay their hands on the coveted Warne-Muralitharan Trophy 2025. While Sri Lanka arrive at the back of a disappointing series loss against South Africa, spirits are high in the Australian camp after their historic triumph over India to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a decade.

Separate aims for both teams

Both sides are looking forward to triumph over the other and achieve their respective target with regards to their overall performance in the longest format of the game. On the other hand, Australia having already qualified for the WTC finals are now looking forward to get crucial points in the series and bridge the gap between WTC t?able leaders South Africa and themselves. Australia have garnered a total of 63.73 PCT points so far in the current cycle and are still 6 PCT points behind the Proteas.

The Australian team has arrived in Sri Lanka for a Test and ODI series against the home side. The first Test between the two nations is set to begin on January 29 in Galle as both teams gear up for a crucial face-off in the longest format of the game. However, before the vital encounter against Sri Lanka, Australian opener Usman Khawaja is investing his time and energy in the nets trying to ace a rather unconventional shot according to his standards- the reverse sweep. This led to a light-hearted exchange of thoughts between Khawaja and his young opening partner Sam Konstas as he r?eceived a history lesson from the seasoned opener?.

Usman Khawaja at the difficulties batters face on reverse sweep shots

After the training session at Galle International Stadium, Khawaja talked about his experiences in Sri Lanka on Cricket Australia’s official channel during the course of his long and decorated career as a cricketer. In the midst of that, he pointed out the passing remarks Konstas and other teammates of the national team made on his reverse sweep practice in the nets to which he g??ave a light-hearted reply.

“Yeah, yeah, show some respect, alright, it wasn’t easy when I started playing the reverse sweep. You get out playing that and you get crucified. Now you’re good,?/em> was Khawaja’s reply pointing? out the conservative mindset the cricketing community had back in the day when he was a youn??gster.

Additionally, he also remarked on the experiences of playing in Sri Lanka and in sub-continent conditions in general. He also talked about the?? difference between playing in Australian and subcontinent pitches for a batter. This is Khawaja’s fifth tour to Sri Lanka. He was a part of the Australian squad in their previous 4 Test tours to the island nation and an Under-19 ca??mpaign back when he was a youngster.

Khawaja revealed his retirement plan before trip to Sri Lanka

The 38-year-old had a silent season and failed to leave a mark with the bat in the home series against India in which the Australian team triumphed to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time after a decade. Speculation was rife that the veteran Australian opener might opt for retirement from Test cricket after the conclusion of the coveted bilateral series, but Khawaja had thoughts of his own on the ??matter.

After the series, Khwaja sat down to have a chat on roar.com i?n which he talked about his retirement plans and potentially when he could bid farewell to the game. During the discussion, Khwaja expressed his openness and flexibility on the matter and left it on Australian team management to decide his future.

“There’s definitely those thoughts (bowing out in Sydney) in my head, I’m not afraid to talk about that. I’m human. I’d still like to play the Ashes at a bare minimum. I try not to think too far ahead, that’s as far ahead as I’ll think. As long as we’re winning, I’m still contributing, my body’s still feeling good, I’ll play. For me it always feels more like one summer at a time,?/em> Khwaja remarked on rumours of his retirement from the longest format of the game.

Additionally, he also pointed out that ups and downs are part and parcel of? the game and?? he is accustomed from the disappointment of not being up to the mark with the bat at times.

“(Playing on the subcontinent) has been a love-hate relationship. (But) there’s going to be times when you score runs, times you don’t score runs. You respect that the older you get. Cricket always ebbs and flows. I’m very attuned to that now,” the 38-year-old concluded.

Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon has opened up about the immense pressure of being compared to one of cricket’s greatest spin bowlers. In a candid interview with Sky Cricket, Lyon, who has been a pivotal figure in Australia‘s bowling attack for over a decade, shared his thoughts on living in the shadow of Shane Warne and how it has shaped his career.

The 36-year-old Lyon, who made his Test debut in 2011, has carved out an impressive career with 530 wickets in just 129 Test matches. Despite his remarkable achievements, Lyon admitted that he still feels overshadowed by the legacy of the cricketing great, even as he solidifies his place in the sport’s history.

Nathan Lyon opens up on his comparison with Shane Warne

Lyon, reflecting on his career, stated that despite playing over 100 Test matches, he still feels overshadowed by Shane Warne. However, Lyon is now co?ntent and comfortable with this reality.

“I still feel in the shadow of Shane Warne now, and I’m 129 Test matches in with 530 wickets, the thing is, I’m happy with that, and I’m comfortable with that now,” the Australian bowler confessed.

Lyon’s admission highlights the tremendous weight that comes with following in the footsteps of such an iconic player. Warne, regarded as one of the greatest spin bowlers of all-time, set an almost unattainable benchmark, and Lyon acknowledged that living under this legacy wasn’t easy.

A lot of us felt the pressure of Shane Warne’s shadow… and it probably took me a good five, six, seven years to understand that pressure is a privilege. And if you’ve got pressure, you’re OK, you’re doing OK, enjoy it,” Lyon remarked.

Lyon talks about living up to Warne’s legacy

Throughout his career, Lyon has consistently been a key figure for Australia, k?nown for his ability to deliver under pressure in crucial moments. Yet, even with his personal success, he remains h??umble about his place in the grander scheme of the game.

I’m never going to be able to do what Warnie did. Warnie’s once-in-a-generation, he’s the greatest to play the game in my opinion, emphasizing the respect he holds for his predecessor, all I want to do is make my family proud, make Shane Warne proud, and just go out there and compete,” the off-spinner added.

As Lyon continues his cricketing journey, his comments reflect both a deep respect for Warne’s legacy and a firm grasp of his own identity as a cricketer. While he may still feel in the shadow of the legendary spinner, Lyon has crafted a career that stands tall in its own right, built on skill, perseverance, and an enduring love for the game.

In the wake of David Warner‘s farewell to Test Cricket, Australia finds themselves at a crossroads, pondering who will step into the shoes of the stalwart opener. Adding a thrilling twist to the narrative, Steve Smith has thrown his hat into the ring, expressing a keen interest in taking up the challenge of opening the batting for his side in red-ball cricket. As the cricketing fraternity buzzes with anticipation, Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, offered insights into Smith’s aspirations and the team’s quest for a worthy successor, injecting an exciting and dynamic dimension into Australia’s batting strategy.

Andrew McDonald on Steve Smith’s willingness to play as an opener

McDonald acknowledged Smith’s interest to open the batting, mentioning that team will consider all options. While Smith at the top order is an appealing prospect, the latter emphasized the need to strike a balance and ensure that any changes do not compromise the team’s overall strengths. He highlighted the challenge of filling the void left by Warner while maintaining the team’s dynamic equilibrium.

“He’s mentioned it throughout the last couple of weeks. He’s put his view forward and we will consider all options. He made those [views] public, so we’ll consider all options. It’s nice to have him putting his hand up. I think there were a few others that weren’t putting their hand up. Steve at [number] three or four is pretty appetizing also. You’ve got to make sure you’re not removing the strengths of the team in the search to fill a gap also, so there’s a balance within that,” McDon??ald said, as quoted by The Sydn?ey Morning Herald.

McDonald on David Warner

McDonald further underscored the challenge of replacing Warner, mentioning that players with the juggernaut’s style and intent are not easily replaceable. He appreciated Warner’s unique approach and the exceptional intent displayed in his final innings, where he scored 57 runs.

“We’ve been lucky in having David Warner and sometimes people that play that way aren’t exactly replaceable. There’s not another David Warner out there. It was fantastic to see the way and the intent he played with [in his final innings],” the 42-year-old added.
