Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has made his predictions for the highly anticipated five-match Test series between Australia and India, set to begin later this year.

Known for his sharp cricketing insights, the former Indian captain has boldly forecasted that India will emerge victorious and lift the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) once again.

Gavaskar, who has been following both teams closely, believes that Australia’s batting problems will give the Indian bowlers an edge. “It’s going to be an exciting series for sure with the talent that is there on both sides and it will also show why Test match cricket is the ultimate format of our beloved game.  Oh, and my prediction is a 3-1 win for India,” wrote Gavaskar in his column for the Mid-day.

 “With their opening batting problems exacerbated after the retirement of David Warner and the middle-order also a bit dodgy, the Aussies are ripe for the taking once again,” he added.

“India being usual slow starters in an overseas series in SENA countries the first Test will be crucial. That they aren’t playing proper first-class games before that as well as in the week-long gaps between some Test matches could work against them. That said, it is how schedules are nowadays for most touring sides.”

India vs Australia in recent times

India have a strong Test record against Australia in recent years, winning their last two trips Down Under in 2018-19 and 2020-21. In the 2023 Australia tour of India, the Rohit Sharma-led side retained the BGT after defeating Pat Cummins & Co. (2-1) in the four-match Test series.

The two teams also contested the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) last year, with Australia l?ifting the title.

Australia‘s star fast bowler, Mitchell Starc, has expressed optimism about Australia’s chances of reclaiming the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-2025, as they prepare for a highly anticipated five-match home Test series against India.

Speaking to Wide World of Sports, Starc exuded confidence in the Australian team’s ability to regain the coveted trophy, which India have held since their historic triumphs in Australia over the last two series.

Mitchell Starc confident in regaining Border-Gavaskar Trophy 

Reflecting on the magnitude of the series, Starc compared it to another iconic cricketing contest, the Ashes, emphasizing the i??mportance of winning on home turf.

“Being five matches now, it’s probably right on par with an Ashes series, We always want to win every game at home, and we know India are a very strong team. As we’re placed at the minute, we’re the top two teams on the Test ladder, so it’s a very exciting series coming up for the fans and certainly the players. Hopefully, when we’re sitting there on the 8th of January, we have that trophy back on our shores,” Starc stated.

The left-arm pacer also addressed the gruelin?g schedule that lies ahead for the Australian team, which includes not just the five Tests against India but also two subsequent Tests in Sri Lanka. Despite the demanding nature of the cricketing calendar, Starc reaffirmed that Test matches remain his top priority.

“The Tests will always be taking precedence for me, We’ve got seven Tests on the bounce, with five against India and then two in Sri Lanka, so they sit top of the tree with what’s coming up. The schedule is pretty fluid… the three quicks in particular, Josh [Hazlewood], Pat [Cummins], and I, we all play three formats, so it might look differently for each of us,” Starc added.

While the trio of Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins have been vital across all formats of the game, Starc noted that their participation in each match will depend on their fitness and workload management. However, he remains fully committed to giving his all for the?? upcoming series.

“I don’t think we’ve put a deadline on anything. The Test matches will remain a priority, certainly for myself, and I think it would be similar for the other two as well. We’ll see where our bodies are and the desire to keep going, but at this stage, it’s all guns blazing for five Tests against India,” the Aussie seamer added further.

The upcoming India tour of Australia in 2024-25 has been expanded to include an additional day-night warmup game, according to the latest schedule announced by Cricket Australia.

India set to play extra pink-ball game on Australia tour

The five-match Test series, which is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle, will now feature a pink-ball Test.

George Bailey, the CA Chair of Selectors, in his official statement said, “Representing the PMs XI is a tremendous honour for any player given its rich history spanning across eight decades. This year’s match also presents an opportunity for players to impress against arguably the strongest side in world cricket.”

India will also have an intra-squad w??arm-up at the WACA from November 15-18. They will reach Australia after playing a thre??e-match home Test series against New Zealand.

The tour is scheduled to begin on November 22, 2024 wi??th the first Test at the Perth Stadium. The second Test, a day-nig??ht affair, will be played at the Adelaide Oval from December 6-10.

Shardul responded candidly, highlighting the numerous challenges the team endured, “The way they treated us was very horrible for four or five days. There was no room service in the hotel. If you wanted to change the bedsheet, you had to walk up four or five floors to get it yourself, even when you were tired.”

Shardul also discussed the Queensland governor’s comments expressing reluctance to host the Indian team, adding pressure with negative remarks, “Going from Sydney to Brisbane, we heard the lady governor of Queensland saying that if Indians do not want to come, well, do not come. We do not want to host them, or we are not happily hosting them. There were a lot of negative things said about us that put us under pressure.”

Shardul accused Tim Paine of lying, claiming he falsely portrayed that no pressure had been applied and that they had met all demands, “I heard an interview from Tim Paine. That man was absolutely lying because he was saving himself by making up things in the media, covering up that they did not put any pressure on the Indian team and that they gave us whatever we wanted.”

Injuries and problems faced by the Indian cricket team

Shardul further elaborated that Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli had left and frequently clashed with the Cricket Board of Australia for necessary support, “Our coach, Ravi Shastri, and Virat Kohli had left. Ajinkya Rahane was leading. They both were regularly fighting with the Cricket Board of Australia to get the things we needed.”

In the end Shardul said that the tour was challenging with multiple injuries, including Navdeep Saini and Natarajan. In the final innings, Mohammed Siraj and I bowled nine overs each and ignored the Australians post-victory, “It was difficult the whole tour. Injuries kept happening. Even in the last game, Navdeep Saini got injured, Natrajan also got injured, and in the second innings, Siraj and I bowled nine overs each. For the first time ever, we didn’t even look at the Australians after winning. We said, ‘go and sit back in your dressing room.”

Despite the numerous obstacles, the Indian Cricket team emerged victorious, clinching the series 2-1. The win at Gabba, in particular, has been etched in history as a testament to the team’s resilience, determination, and indomitable spirit.
