In a historic feat on Friday, February 16, veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin etched his name in cricketing glory by becoming the second Indian bowler and ninth overall to reach 500 wickets in Test cricket. The momentous achievement unfolded during the ongoing third Test in Rajkot against England, as Ashwin dismissed opener Zak Crawley for 15 on Day 2.

Ravichandran Ashwin: Second fastest to 500 Test wickets mark

Not only did Ashwin enter the elite 500-wicket club, but he also claimed the title of the second fastest bowler to achieve this milestone. The Tamil Nadu-born cricketer accomplished this remarkable feat in his 98th Test, spanning 184 innings, positioning him just behind Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan (87 matches) in terms of speed.

Transformation into a spin maestro

Ashwin’s cricketing journey is characterized by versatility, as he initially started his career as a medium pacer. In a revealing interview with the Indian Express, Ashwin’s father shed light on the cricketer’s transition from pace to spin bowling, emphasizing the crucial role played by Ashwin’s mother in this pivotal shift.

The biggest turning point in Ashwin’s career was when he switched to bowling off-spin. And I must thank my wife Chitra for that decision. Those days Ashwin had wheezing and he also had an issue with his knee. So to do all the running (as a medium pacer) was proving to be a challenge. It was Chitra who said, โ€˜Why should you run so much? Just take a few steps and bowl spin,” Ashwin’s father said.

Unforeseen withdrawal from the Rajkot Test

Despite the jubilation surrounding Ashwin’s historic achievement, a somber note emerged as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released an official statement on Friday night. The statement disclosed Ashwin’s withdrawal from the ongoing Rajkot Test due to a family emergency. Consequently, the 37-year-old spinner will not be participating further in the match, with Devdutt Padikkal stepping in as a substitute fielder.

The Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 is around the corner, and the excitement among fans and players can be clearly seen on social media platforms. India’s star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, k?nown ?for his blunt responses, recently took to Twitter to share a picture of a funny edited bio which shows him in a new role ahead of the BGT 2023.

India will take on Australia in the inaugural match of BGT 2023 at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur from Thursday, February 9. Notably, it is a crucial four-match test series for India as on it depends their World ??Test Championship 2023 final qualifying hopes. The hosts need to win the leg either 3-0 or 4-0 to make it to the summit clash.

The Aussies have already started preparing for the challenge and were spotted training with a? hired ?rookie spinner Mahesh Pithiya. The main purpose of the touring side behind roping in Pithiya is to get ready to tackle Ashwin in the upcoming Test matches. But despite all these efforts, it wouldn’t be easy for the Australian side to face a quality spinner like Ashwin in Indian conditions.

While many former cricketers reacted on Australia training with duplicate Ashwin, the 36-year-old refrained from speaking about it. However, amid all this, Ashwin posted a picture on Twitter of a funny edited bio of himself that showed him as both an off-spinner and leg-spinner. He captioned the image: “My morning coffee came with this and I wonder who has done this.”

Fans soon after Ashwin’s post flooded social media with jokes and memes. Some even called it the Tamil Nadu cricketer’s new plan to surprise Australia after he saw them train with Pithiya.

On the first day of the ongoing second Test between South Africa and India in Centurion, during the first session of play the home team dominated but for the last two sessions the credited should be given to India’s spin king Ravichandran Ashwin whose tremendous effort and execution helped the visitors to reduc??e South Africa at 269 for 6 from 199/3 at the stumps.

Ashwin returned with the figures of 3/90 at the end of first day’s play and his prized possessions were Dean Elgar (31), Aiden Markram (94) and Quinton De Cock (0).

Surprisingly, the feisty South Africa wicket-keeper batsman De Kock failed to soak in the pressure and got out on the very first ball he faced. Without much movement, De Kock tried to drive a faster delivery from Ashwin which took a fat outside edge to first slip. And Virat Kohli couldn’t have got a better catch than this! He made sure De Kock walks back without disturbing the scoreboard.

Kohli was pumped up after completing the catch and performed the ‘dab’ along with teammate KL Rahul.
