Cricket Australia have unveiled their 14-player squad for the upcoming three-match T20I tour of New Zealand, scheduled to take place from March 21 to March 26, 2025. The women’s squad squad includes a notable debutant, Nicole Faltum, who has been called up as wicketkeeping cover for Beth Mooney. Without a doubt, Ashleigh Gardner is one of the finest players of the game with her outstanding ability to deliver at crucial junctures of the game. The Australian all-rounder is currently leading Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in which the cricketing world saw another ??glimpse of her outstanding commitment to securing important wickets for her team.

Ashleigh Gardner takes a screamer to send Deepti Sharma back to the pavilion

The incident occurred during the 15th over of the UP Warriorz innings when Shweta Sehrawat and skipper Deepti Sharma were at the crease to get some quick runs for their team. In her quest to display some scenic shots, Sharma went down the ground and exploded on an incoming ball from Priya Mishra, but completely misjudged the speed of the bowl. The delivery edged off her bat instead and sailed high in the air towards the Giants?skipper who dived toward his right to take a breathtaking catch and marked the end of Sharma’s innings. Sharma’s wicket came at a crucial time of the match as it helped the Giants to further restrict Warriorz’s innings and managed to exert further pressure on the visitors’ batting line-up.

A disciplined effort from Gujarat Giants led to their first win in WPL

Giants secured a convincing six-wicket victory over Warriorz in Match 3 of the WPL 2025. Chasing a target of 144, Gujarat reached 144/4 in 18 overs, thanks to a match-winning knock from captain Gardner, who scored a blistering 52 off 32 balls with five fours and three sixes. She was well-supported by Harleen Deol and Deandra Dottin, who ensured a comfortable chase.

Earlier, Warriorz struggled to build momentum, managing 143/9 in their 20 overs. Sophie Ecclestone was the pick of the bowlers for UP, taking 2/16 in her four overs, while Tahlia McGrath and Grace Harris chipped in with a wicket each. However, their efforts wer?e not enough to stop Gujarat from registering their first win of the season. Gardner’s all-round brilliance, which included bowling figures of 2/39 in four overs, earned her the Player of the Match award.

Gujarat Giants displayed a dominant all-round performance to outclass UP Warriorz by six wickets in Match 3 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 at Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara on Sunday (February 16). A clinical bowling effort, spearheaded by Priya Mishra’s three-wicket haul, restricted UP Warriorz to 143/9, before Gujarat chased down the target with 12 balls to spare, thanks to Ashleigh Gardner’s explosive fifty.

Priya Mishra’s game-changing spell restricts UP Warriorz

The Warriorz struggled to build partnerships after electing to bat first, as the Giants’ bowlers, particularly Priya, struck at crucial junctures. Kiran Navgire started aggressively with 15 off 8 balls but fell early to Deandra Dottin. The middle order saw a brief resurgence through captain Deepti Sharma, who top-scored with 39 off 27 balls, but wickets continued to tumble. Priya’s decisive strikes removed Tahlia McGrath, Grace Harris and Deepti, dismantling UPW’s momentum. A late cameo from Alana King ??(19 not out) pushed the total to 143/9, but it was?? below par on a good batting surface.

Ashleigh Gardner’s brutal fifty steadies Gujarat Giants’ chase

Chasing 144, the Giants suffered an early scare as Beth Mooney and Dayalan Hemalatha departed within the first two overs, leaving them reeling at 2/2. However, Gardner turned the game around with a counter-attacking 52 off 32 balls, finding support from Laura Wolvaardt (22) and Harleen Deol (34 not out). Gardner took on Warriorz’s spinners, striking five fours and three sixes, and stitched a crucial 55-run partnership with Wolvaardt to rebuild the innings. Though she fell to McGrath, Deol and Deandra Dottin (33 not?? out off 18) ensured a comfortable finish, sealing the win in 18?? overs.

Sophie Ecclestone’s effort goes in vain as Gujarat dominate

Sophie Ecclestone was the lone bright spot for UP Warriorz with figures of 2/16 in four overs, removing Wolvaardt and Hemalatha. However, the rest of the bowling unit lacked penetration, with King and Saima Thakor conceding 38 and 20 runs in their respective spells. Deepti’s four overs for 32 runs also failed to contain Gujarat’s aggressive approach. The Giants’ depth in batting and disciplined bowling ultimately handed them a well-deserved victory, earning them two crucial points in the tournament.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) skipper Smriti Mandhana delivered a lighthearted yet sharp response when questioned about her recurring battles with Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner, following RCB’s record-breaking six-wicket win over Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premie?r League (WPL??) 2025 on Friday, February 14.

The clash at Vadodara’s Kotambi Stadium saw Gardner dismiss Mandhana for the ??ninth time in Women’s T20 cricket ?the most by a?ny bowler ?surpassing England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt (8).

Smriti Mandhana’s witty retort steals spotlight

Gardner, who also removed Danni Wyatt-Hodge, now boasts 15 career dismissals of the Indian vice-captain across formats. Despite her personal setback, Mandhana laughed off a post-match query about inviting Gardner to dinner as a peace offering, quipping, “I think I ha??ve to take he??r for runs now. It’s time!?/em>

Ellyse Perry (56 off 38) anchored the innings, while Richa Ghosh’s explosive 64* (27 balls) and Kanika Ahuja’s unbeaten 30 (14) sealed the thriller. Mandhana praised the duo, stating, “The way Richa and Pez [Perry] batted was amazing. They’ve been doing this in the nets, and Im thrilled it clic?ked today.?/em>

While Gardner’s record feat highlighted Gujarat’s bowling, their lackluster death overs and RCB’s fearless batting tilted the game. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) scripted history by registering the highest successful run chase in Women’s Premier League (WPL) history, defeating Gujarat Giants (GG) by six wickets with nine balls to spare. Chasing a daunting target of 202, RCB rode on a breathtaking 64 not put off 27 balls from Richa Ghosh and a commanding 57 off 34 from Ellyse Perry to storm to victory in the opening match of WPL 2025 at Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara. This chase marked the first time a team had successfully hunted down a 200-plus total in the WPL, setting the perfect tone for the seas?on.

Ashleigh Gardner’s all-round brilliance sets up a mammoth total

After being invited to bat first, Gujarat got off to a cautious start but found themselves in early trouble at 41/2 in 6.4 overs. However, skipper Ashleigh Gardner turned the innings around with a breathtaking 79 not out off just 37 balls, hammering three fours and eight sixes at a strike rate of 213.51. Beth Mooney (56 off 42) anchored the innings with a solid knock, while Deandra Dottin (25 off 13) provided an explosive cameo. Their efforts propelled Gujarat to an imposing 201/5 in 20 ?overs, a total that seemed formidable at the halfway mark.

Ellyse Perry and Rucha Ghosh lead the counterattack for RCB

RCB’s chase got off to a shaky start, losing captain Smriti Mandhana (9) and Danni Wyatt-Hodge (4) inside two overs. However, Perry took charge, crafting a masterful 57 off 34 balls, striking six fours and two sixes to revive the innings. Despite losing Raghvi Bist (25 off 27) at a crucial juncture, RCB stayed in the hunt. The turning point came when Ghosh walked in and unleashed a breathtaking counterattack, smashing 64 off 27 balls with seven fours and four sixes. She found an able partner in Kanika Ahuja (30 unbeate??n off 13), who provided the finishing touch as RCB raced to victory in just 18.3 overs.

Despite a solid batting effort, Gujarat found themselves on the w??rong side of history as RCB’s power-packed batting lineup delivered a statement victory. Gujarat Giants captain Ashleigh Gardner made an immediate impact in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025, striking twice in her very first over to put Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on the back foot in their chase of 202. First, she trapped Smriti Mandhana plumb in front for 9 with a sharp delivery that angled in and skidded onto the pads. Four balls later, Gardner delivered another massive blow by cleaning up Danni Wyatt-Hodge for just 4.

Smriti Mandhana’s aggressive start cut short by Ashleigh Gardner’s precision

Mandhana walked out with intent, striking two crisp boundaries early on to signal RCB’s attacking approach in their daunting chase of 202. However, Ga??rdner, leading Gu?jarat from the front, produced a masterclass in bowling, cutting short the RCB captain’s stay.

On just her second delivery of the match, Gardner bowled a back-of-a-length ball that pitched on off stump and skidded in sharply with the angle. Mandhana, caught on ??the crease while trying to ??????????????????????????play square on the leg side, failed to adjust to the sharp movement. The ball struck her flush on the pads, and up went the finger immediately. The appeal was loud and confident, and Mandhana herself seemed to know she was in trouble.

Despite looking ready to walk off, she was persuaded by her batting partner to take the review, possibly hoping the ball was sliding down her leg. But the replays crushed RCB’s hopes. The ball had beaten the inside edge of h??er bat and was heading straight into the middle stump, leaving no room for doubt. Ultra Edge confirmed no involvement of the bat, and ball-tracking showed three reds—crashing into the stumps. With that, Mandhana lost her wicket and burned RCB’s review in the first over. Gardner had struck gold, sending the opposition’s most exper?ienced batter back for just 9 off 7 balls.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge falls next, middle stump flattened

RCB, already rocked by the early departure of their captain, had no time to recover before Gardner ??struck again, this time dismantling Danni Wyatt-Hodge. The English opener had just opened her account with a boundary and was looking to settle in, but Gardner’s relentless accuracy did not allow her that luxury.

On the final ball of the same over, Gardner delivered a skiddy, fuller-length ball targeting off stump. Wyatt-Hodge, in an attempt to sweep, committed to the shot too early without getting close to the pitch of the ball. The result was disastrous – she missed it entirely, and the ball crashed into the middle stump, sending it flying.

As the bails lit up and the stump lay uprooted, Wyatt-Hodge could only look back in despair before walking off for just 4 off 4 balls. The Gujarat Giants erupted in celebration, and Gardner, with figures of 2/2 at the end of her first over, had completely turned the match on its head. With both openers dismissed in quick succession, RCB’s chase of 201 had su?ffered a massive early setback, leaving them needing a massive recovery from their middle order to stay in the game.
