Former England captain Nasser Hussain has thrown his weight behind Andy Flower as a potential candidate for the vacant England white-b?all head coach position. The former Zimbabwean batter has enjoyed immense success as a coach in recent years, and Hussain believes his experience? and expertise make him an ideal fit for the role.

Andy Flower’s evolution

Hussain acknowledged that there might be some resistance to appointing Flower due to his previous stint as England’s coach. However, he emphasized that the former batter has evolved significantly since then.

“Some would view (Flower) as a backward step ‘never go back, you are going back to a former England coachbut I think Andy has moved on. Andy was very anti-franchise and IPL, but that was a very long time ago. Now he has travelled the world, winning for most franchises and doing some really good things,/em> H?ussain told the PA news agency.

Flower’s proven track record

Flower’s coaching CV boasts an impressive array of achievements. He has led various teams to succ??ess, showcasing his ability to adapt to different playing conditions and cultural environments. His experience in the T20 format, particularly in franchise cricket, aligns well with the demands of modern white-ball cricket.

“He is a brilliant coach. You just have to look at his CV and, if Rob Key got Andy Flower’s CV out, there is hardly a better option than that, but again it is if Andy wants to do it. I just look at the best person for the job, simple? as that. I’ve worked with Kumar and (he has a) brilliant brain. I’ve played and seen Andy Flower, brilliant player-coach, brilliant man,/em> he added.

Finding the right candidate

While Hussain is clearly impressed by Flower’s credentials, he also highlighted the importance of finding a coach who is genuinely interested in the role. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has faced challenges in attracting?? top-quality coaches in the past, and ensuring that the right candidate is? not only qualified but also motivated is crucial.

“They are all very good candidates and I repeat the job is not so m??uch finding the candidate, it is finding the candidate that actually wants to do the job,/em> the Former English captain stated.

As the ECB continues its search for a new white-ball head coach, Andy Flower’s name is likely to be high on the shortlist. His proven track record and ability to adapt to modern cricket make him a compell??ing candidate.

However, the final decision will ultimately depend on whether he is interested in retu?rning to international cricket and whether the ECB believe he is the best person to lead the England white-ball team to future success.

Former England captain Michael Atherton has named as the ideal replacement for Matthew Mott as England‘s head white-ball coach.

ECB announces Matthew Mott’s departure

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recently revealed that Mott ha??s stepped?? down from his role following a series of underwhelming performances.

England’s disappointing campaigns in the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023, where they finished in seventh place, and the T20 World Cup 2024, where they lost in the semi-finals, led to Mott’s resignation. With the search for a new head coach now underway, Marcus Trescothick has been appointed as an interim coach while other c??andidates are considered.

Michael Atherton names the perfect candidate

Now Atherton shown his support towards former cricketing great Andy Flower for the coaching job. Flower, whose tenure with England saw them achieve significant milestones including their first T20 World Cup victory and a top Test ranking, is seen as a prime candidate to rejuvenate the team’s white-ball fortunes.

In his column for The Times, Atherton reflected on Flower’s nota??ble achievements in franchise cricket, which he believes ?make Flower an excellent fit for the role.

“Flower transformed Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League; won the Abu Dhabi T10; took St Lucia to their first CPL final; and won the Hundred with Trent Rockets. These successes demonstrate Flower’s ability to adapt and excel in various competitive environments, skills that are crucial for the white-ball role,” Atherton wrote.

Evolution since previous tenure

De??spite previous criticisms of Flower’s intensity, Atherton suggested that Flower has likely evol?ved since his last stint with England.

“Flower has changed, too. He is said to have mellowed somewhat, possibly due to age or the evolving dynamics of player power. His extensive experience across different coaching roles has broadened his approach, making him potentially more adaptable and effective,” Atherton observed.

Managing workload

Flower’s current coaching role with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) could present a challenge in ba?lancing both commitments. However, Atherton argues that managing both roles could be feas??ible.

“International jobs are less sought after than before, and Flower’s IPL commitment might be a sticking point. However, there is no international cricket during the IPL window, and Flower’s involvement in the IPL can keep him attuned to emerging trends and players, benefiting his role with England,” Atherton concluded.

Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian opening batter, has been appointed as the head coach of India’s cricket team, succeeding Rahul Dravid. The announcement was made by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday (July 9), marking a significant shift in the team’s leadership. Gambhir’s tenure will begin with the responsibility of guiding India through their upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, comprising three ODIs and three T20Is startin??g?? from July 27.

Gautam Gambhir’s coaching experience and notable achievements

Gambhir brings a wealth of coaching experience to his new role, having previously mentored prominent teams such as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2023 and 2022. Under his leadership, LSG achieved playoff qualifications in consecutive IPL seasons (2022 and 2023), while he played a pivotal role in KKR’s victory in the 2024 edition, securing their third title.

Former Zimbabwe captain and current Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) head coach Andy Flower has pinpointed five emerging talents from India‘s current T20I squad who have the potential to step into the formidable shoes left vacant by the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma alongside Ravindra Jadeja following India’s victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. The veteran duo bid farewell to T20I cricket on a high note after India clinched a thrilling seven-run victory over South Africa in the final held in Barbados on June 29.

Emerging talents identified by Andy Flower

With the departure of these senior players, the Indian selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, opted for a rejuvenated squad for the Zimbabwe series, appointing Shubman Gill as captain for the first time. Flower, speaking to the Times of India, highlighted Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Abhishek Sharma and Riyan Parag as the young guns poised to fill the void. Flower noted that while Jaiswal didn’t feature in the T20 World Cup, his potential remains exceptional. Despite a relatively subdued IPL season, Flower praised Gill for his cricketing acumen and playing style reminiscent of Kohli’s.

“If I put my IPL coaching hat on, then I’ll have to keep a keen watch on the players. (Yashasvi) Jaiswal didn’t play a single match in the T20 World Cup but he is an incredible option. Shubman Gill, by his standards, had a quiet IPL but he looks a very intelligent player. He plays in a similar way to Virat Kohli,” Flower was quoted as saying ?by the Times of India.

“I’m looking forward to Abhishek Sharma performing. I really like the look of Dhruv Jurel. Watching him in the Test series against England, he did brilliantly. Riyan Parag has the swagger that you need in international cricket,” Flower concluded.

Abhishek Sharma’s record-breaking century against Zimbabwe

India’s journey in the Zimbabwe series took a turn after a surprising defeat in the first T20I, prompting a strong comeback in the next match with a commanding 100-run victory. This resurgence was fueled by Abhishek’s breathtaking century. Despite a rocky start with a four-ball duck earlier in th?e series, Abhishek blazed to a century off just 45 balls?, becoming the third-fastest Indian and the first to achieve a T20I century against Zimbabwe.

Cricket fans around the world are eagerly awaiting the grand finale of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, and former Zimbabwean cricketer Andy Flower has added to the excitement with a bold prediction regarding the tournament’s winner.

The final line-up: South Africa vs India

The T20 World Cup 2024 has reached its thrilling conclusion, with South Africa set to square off India in the final showdown. The much-awaited clash will take place on Saturday, June 29, at the iconic Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. South Africa thrashed Afghanistan in Semifinal 1, while India thumped England in the second semifina??l. Both teams are coming into the final undefeated and on paper, there is little to choose between them. It could come down to mental preparedness and staying calm under the pump.

Andy Flower’s insight

In a recent interview, Andy Flower shared his thoughts on the 2024 T20 WC final. “Both South Africa and India have displayed exceptional skill and consistency throughout the tournament,” he said. “South Africa has shown remarkable resilience, and India has been dominant from the start.”

Flower highlighted the strengths of both teams, noting South Africa’s unbeaten streak and record-setting seven consecutive victories in a single edition of the T20 World Cup. He also praised India’s strong performance, having won six out of their seven games, with one fixture being washed out.

Flower’s prediction and expectations

When asked to predict the winner of the T20 WC 2024, Flower confidently stated, “I believe both teams have the depth and experience, but form need to go all the way. It will be a closely contested match, and I have a feeling India might just edge it to lift their second T20 World Cup.”

Flower’s prediction has added to the anticipation, setting the stage for a potentially historic victory for either South Africa or India. The dust has barely settled on Pakistan’s disappointing exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, and already, discussions are swirling about the team’s future leadership. While the official call will come from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), former Zimbabwean captain and coaching veteran Andy Flower has add??ed his voice to the mix, sparking a fresh debate.

Notably, Pakistan cricket has been grappling with captaincy issues, particularly in the white-ball formats. Babar Azam was reinstated as captain after Shaheen Afridi’s brief and challenging stint as skipper, which included a 1-4 series loss to New Zealand in January. However, Babar’s reinstatement before the mega event didn’t solve all the problems as Pakistan couldn’t even make it to the Super 8.

Andy Flower picks his choice

Flower, in discussing the future leadership of the Pakistan cricket team, expressed his views on potential captaincy candidates. He ruled out Shadab Khan, citing his failure to perform his primary role effectively, and dismissed the possibility of Shaheen Afridi returning to the captaincy. This left Babar and Mohammad Rizwan as the main options. Flower praised Rizwan for his leadership qualities, highlighting his integrity and the respe??ct he commands from his teammates, suggesting that Rizwan could be a viable choice for captain.

“As far as the leadership is concerned, Shadab Khan is out of the running because he is not doing his primary job well. I don’t think they will go back to Shaheen which leaves Babar and Rizwan as the option. Rizwan I think, is an excellent leader of men. He has got a big heart and he has got ample integrity and people follow him. I think he is an option for them,” said Flower while speaking to ESPNcricinfo.

Where Pakistan went wrong in the T20 World Cup 2024

In addressing Pakistan’s performance in the T20 World Cup, Flower pointed to the sudden and significant changes made just before the tournament. These included reinstating Babar as captain, demoting Shaheen, and bringing back players like Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir.

Flower suggested that such major adjustments could have disrupted the team’s cohesion and stability. However, he also believed that these changes had the potential to strengthen the team, implying that the timing and implementation might have been the issues rather than the changes themselves.

“They made some quite radical changes just prior to the World Cup. They brought Babar back as captain and relegated Shaheen. They also brought back Imad Wasim from the wilderness along with Mohammad Amir. So, big changes just prior to the tournament starting but I think these changes should have strengthened Pakistan,” added Flower.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to release an advertisement for a new head coach role of the Indian men’s cricket team.

Rahul Dravid tenure

According to the Cricbuzz report, BCCI’s secretary Jay Shah clarified that the current Team India’s head coach Rahul Dravid‘s tenure is only until June this year and that he is free to apply for the position if he wishes to do so.

“Rahul’s tenure is only up to June. So if he wants to apply, he is free to do so,” Shah said.

Consultation and decision-making

The report further stated that the decision regarding other members of the coaching staff, including batting, bowling, and fielding coaches, will be made in consultation with the new coach. According to the report, the BCCI official also kept the possibility of hiring a foreign coach open-ended, stating that the decision will ultimately rest with the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), emphasizing the global nature of the board.

“We cannot determine whether the new coach will be Indian or foreign. It will be up to the CAC, and we are a global body,” the BCCI’s secretary added.

Unified coaching approach

Furthermore, it has been hinted that the BCCI is unlikely to adopt the practice of having different coaches for different formats, as seen in other cricket boards such as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The report highlighted the absence of precedent for such a scenario in India and emphasized that the decision would also be made by the CAC. Confirming the long-term nature of the appointment, the new coach will serve for an initial period of three years, indicating the BCCI’s commitment to providing stability and continuity in leadership.

“That decision will also be made by the CAC. There are many all-format players, like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, among others. Moreover, there is no precedent for such a situation in India,” Shah concluded.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Auction witnessed Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) making strategic purchases, including players like Alzarri Joseph, Yash Dayal, Lockie Ferguson, Tom Curran, Saurav Chauhan and Swapnil Singh. The auction choices generated mixed reactions among fans, with a particular focus on Indian pacer Dayal and West Indies‘ Joseph.

Andy Flower explains RCB’s decision to pick Alzarri Joseph and Yash Dayal in the IPL 2024 Auction

RCB’s head coach, Andy Flower, stepped forward to endorse the team’s selections, expressing confidence in the abilities of Dayal. Flower emphasized Dayal’s knack for swinging the ball and saw high potential in the young bowler to deliver impactful performances, especially in crunch situations during the death overs. He remained optimistic that Dayal would overcome the challenges faced in the previous season and showcase significant improvement.

“As far as Yash Dayal is concerned, we saw some of his potential last year, certainly with the new ball for swing and wicket-taking potential. I know he had a hard time at the death occasionally, but we believe he has got high potential and we are looking for great things from him,” Flower was quoted as saying by The Ti?mes of India.

Dayal’s previous season: A learning curve

Dayal had an eventful debut IPL season in 2022, claiming 11 wickets. However, he faced a setback in next season when Rinku Singh‘s explosive batting display shattered his confidence. Singh’s five consecutive sixes off Dayal in a crucial moment impacted the left-arm pacer’s form. Despite this setback, the RCB coaching staff believes in Dayal’s potential to bounce back stronger.

Joseph’s inclusion: Strategic partnership

Flower has also shed light on RCB’s decision to acquire West Indies pacer Joseph for a substantial amount (INR 11.50 crore). Highlighting Joseph’s prior experience playing alongside RCB skipper Faf du Plessis in Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and SA20, Flower not?iced this partnership as beneficial for the Caribbean fast bowler. The coach emphasized the value of seasoned players contributing to the overall team dynamics.

“We had a go at Pat Cummins but were outbid in the end. We went for Alzarri and are really happy to have him. He is a quality operator. Faf (du Plessis) and I have worked with him before at Saint Lucia Kings and I think Faf’s worked with him in the SA20 as well,” the 55-year-old concluded.

Looking ahead: RCB’s trophy aspirations

With a fresh management team and new faces on board, RCB aims to break their IPL trophy drought. Flower’s strategic insights into the team’s auction choices suggest a well-thought-out approach, and fans eagerly anticipate seeing how the new acquisitions contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming IPL season.

On the retention deadline day for the highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, major roster adjustments were witnessed as all 10 franchises made strategic decisions. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), ??in particular, opted to release 11 players, includ?ing notable overseas talent.

The release of Josh Hazlewood

Among the high-profile players released by RCB was Australian cricketer Josh Hazlewood, a key figure in Chennai Super Kings’ triumphant 2021 campaign. Despite his impactful performance with 11 wickets and an economy rate of 8.37, Hazlewood found himself on the released list.

Securing Hazlewood for INR 7.75 crore in the 2022 mega auction, RCB benefited from his skills over the next two seasons. Amassing 23 wickets at an average of 19.69 and an economy of 8.16, Hazlewood’s contributions were noteworthy. However, his 2023 season was marred by a limited appearance due to an Achilles heel injury.

Andy Flower explains why RCB did not retain Josh Hazlewood

RCB’s decision to release Hazlewood was explained by head coach Andy Flower. The coach revealed in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) that Hazlewood, shortly after the announcement, informed the team about an upcoming personal milestone. Flower explained, “Josh Hazlewood…very pleasingly, has a baby on the way, due in March. So Josh won’t be with us, certainly not for the first half of the season.”

Comprehensive list of RCB releases

Hazlewood was not the sole departure from RCB; other players released include Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, Indian pacer Harshal Patel, New Zealand duo Finn Allen and Michael Bracewell, England fast bowler David Willey, South African veteran Wayne Parnell, and Indian players Sonu Yadav, Avinash Singh, Siddharth Kaul and Kedar Jadhav. Additionally, RCB had traded Shahbaz Ahmed to Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the retention deadline in exchange fo??r Mayank Dagar.
