The 15th and 16th matches of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers saw Sri Lanka register a massive 133-run victory over Ireland, and Scotland edge past Oman by 76 runs on Sunday (June 25)

Asked to bat first by the Irish team, Sri Lanka’s innings got off to a solid start, with opener Dimuth Karunaratne and Sadeera Samarawickrama laying a strong foundation. Karunaratne played a magnificent innings and scored 103 deliveries for his team, while Samarawickrama provided excellent support with a well-constructed 82 runs off 86 balls. Their partnership set the stage for a formidable total. However, the Irish bowlers fought back, with Mark Adair leading the way and claiming a four-fer for 46 runs. Barry McCarthy al?so chipped in with three wickets and helped Ireland bundle out Sri Lanka at 325 runs in 49.5 overs.

Chasing a challenging target, Ireland’s batting struggled to gain momentum against the disciplined Sri Lankan bowling attack. Although Curtis Campher showed some resistance with a quick-fire 39 runs off just 31 deliveries and got the able support of Harry Tector (33), the rest of the Irish batters failed to make significant contributions, and the team was eventuall??y bowled out for 192 runs in just 31 overs. Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga was the standout performer with the ball as he to?ok yet another five-wicke??t haul in the tournament.

Speaking of the 16th match between Scotland and Oman, Scotland began their innings with determination and posted a formidable total of 320 runs before being bowled out in the allotted 50 overs. Brandon McMullen played a magnificent innings for his team and scored a brilliant 136 runs off just 121 deliveries. He received excellent support from Richie Berrington, who contributed a solid 60 runs from 62 balls. Bilal Khan was the stan??dout bowl?er for Oman, claiming an impressive five wickets and conceding 55 runs.

In reply, Oman fought hard but ultimately fell short as they managed 244 runs for the loss of nine wickets in t?heir 50 ??overs. Naseem Khushi played a valiant knock, smashing 69 runs off 53 deliveries. Aqib Ilyas also made a useful contribution of 31 runs from 37 balls but couldn’t sail his team through in the run chase. Chris Greaves was the star performer with the ball for Scotland as he bagged five scalps for 53? runs and caused significant damage to the Oman b?atting lineup.

In the third and fin??al ODI between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, the hosts came up?? on top in a thrilling contest to register a memorable victory and level the series.

Chasing 314, Sri Lanka got off to a good start with openers Pathum Nissanka (35) and Kusal Mendis (67) adding over a hundred runs for the first wicket, but they played slowly. The spin attack of Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan started creating problems, with Rashid, in particular, destroying the middle order. The spin duo reduced Sri Lanka to 164/4 in 30.3 ?overs.

Then Charith Asalanka and captain Dasun Shanaka calmed things down by adding a crucial partnership of 79 runs for the fifth wicket. However, Rashid again brought back Afghanistan by removing Shanaka and Wanindu Hasaranga as the Islanders were reeling at 249/6 after 43.1 overs, w??ith Asalanka soldiering on with a cramp.

However, an unlikely hero emerged in the form of youngster Dunith Wellalage, who accelerated the run flow by smashing a few boundaries when Sri Lanka looked out of the chase. Asalanka, on the other hand, continued chipping the runs and took Sri Lanka over the finish line with a winning six over deep mid-wicket, playing a splendid knock of 83 unbeaten off 72 balls?.

Earlier, Ibrahim Zadran, who had smashed a tremendous hundr???ed in the series opener, once again shined with the bat and hit another century. The Afghan opener scored 162 off 138 balls, including 15 fours and 4 sixes, ?as the tourists ended up re?aching 313/8 in their allotted 50 overs.

“Really happy with this performance. We were behind this chase, but we came out of it strong. I believe in my captain, he’s a magnificent player, and his 40-odd runs were very helpful. I believed all the way, I know Wella (Wellalage) is a good player. The leg is better now, but at some stages, I thought if I must come out. Glad I fought through it,” said Asalanka after the match.

In the first One-Day Inte?rnational (ODI) bet?ween Sri Lanka and Afghanistan at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Friday, the visitor??s registered a cracking 60-run victory to go 1-0 up in the three-match series.

Chasing 295, opener Pathum Nissanka was brilliant with his outstanding knock of 85 runs off 83 balls, but the middle-order completely failed to stand up as Nissanka never really got the support he would’ve expected to cruise through.

The wickets kept on falling at one end, and Nissanka held his fort to keep the Lankans in the game until the 30th over when Fazalhaq Farooqi cleaned him up. The hosts looked done and dusted, but Wanindu Hasaranga kept them in the hunt wi?th ??his vital half-century.

However, like in the case of Nissanka, Hasaranga too ran out of partners and didn’t get enough support from other batters, eventually becoming the final wicket to get dismissed at a well-made 66 from 46 deliveries. It was Farooqi yet again the saviour for Afghanistan as he got rid of Hasaranga too, finishing with four scalps while conceding 49 in nine overs.

Earlier, Ibrahim Zadran‘s stunning century, respective fifties from Rahmat Shah and Rahmanullah Gurbaz and a cameo by Najibullah Zadran took Afg?hanistan to a respe?ctable total of 294/8 in their allotted 50 overs.

Zadran was the chief architect with his batting brilliance, playing a crucial role in the 84-run opening partnership with Gurbaz? and another 118-run stand for the second wicket with Rahmat. While Zadran scored 106 off 120 balls, Gurbaz (53) and Rahmat (52) also made valuable contributions. Najibull?ah also chipped in with a quickfire 25-ball 42, with the help of five fours and a six.

“I’m really happy with my innings. Glad that I performed well. We wanted to bat first if we won the toss, and it was a good toss to win. Pitch was good for batting, read the surface and took my time, and it worked. The track remained the same throughout, we wanted to get to 320, and that was the plan. Our bowlers did a great job,” said Zadran in the post-match presentation.
