One of the most memorable moments that capture the intensity of Indo-Pak rivalry is the famous Venkatesh Prasad’s dismissal of Pakistan’s opening batsman Aamer Sohail in the 1996 World Cup. After smashing a cracking four towards sweeper cover, Sohail pointed his bat in the direction of the boundary and indicated to Prasad that th??e next bowl would travel in the similar region.

However, wh?at transpired was an absolute brain fade moment for the then vice-captain of Pakistan. Prasad came round the stumps and delivered a good length ball which nipped back in, and Sohail missed it completely as the white leather shattered the timber??.

Pakistan were in a strong position until Prasad got the better of Sohail, which helped hosts bounce back in the high-voltage clash. Years after the popular episode, Sohail has revealed that nothing was exchanged between him and Prasad as the incident was ‘interpreted’ in a different way.

“There was no argument. There was nothing said. It was interpreted differently. They have to say something. There was no verbal exchange,” said Sohail in Cricket Life Stories on YouTube.

Sohail said the situation was pretty tensed, and Javed Miandad advised him to do something to put Prasad’s focus away.

“The situation was such that Javed Miandad, being an extremely smart cricketer, he told us how to rile up the bowler when you think he is going to take charge. How to move him away from his focus, or his aims, or whatever he is thinking,” added the 54-year-old.

Speaking about the contest, India, after batting first, posted a challenging total of 287/8 in their allotted 50 overs, thanks to Navjot Singh Sidhu, who scored a scintillating 93.

In response, Sohail scored a quick-fire 55 before Prasad cleaned him up. The right-armer didn’t just stop there as he dismissed Ijaz Ahmed and Inzamam-ul-Haq to complete his three-wicket haul in the match as Pakistan could only reach 248??/9, losing the game by 39 runs.

If there’s a single moment that wholly captures the intensity of the Indo-Pak rivalry, it has to be Venkatesh Prasad’s dismissal of Pakistan’s vice-captain Aamer Sohail in the 1996 World Cup.

In??dian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin won the toss and decided to bat f??irst at Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru- the ground that has always been a paradise for batsmen. An impressive knock from Navjot Singh Sidhu at the top and a destructive cameo from Ajaya Jadeja in the last few overs propelled Team India to a fighting total of 287.

Chasing 287 in 50 overs, Pakistan’s opener Sohail and Saeed Anwar looked flawless, exhibiting a stellar display of technique and temperament before the latter got dismissed by Javagal Srinath. The temperament and patience soon eluded Sohail, and the left-handed batsman got into a heated confrontation with Prasad.

Batting on 51 off 44, the southpaw danced down the track to Prasad’s slightly off the length ball and smashed an emphatic four towards sweeper cover. If this was not enough, Sohail showed needless aggression, looking at Prasad and directing his bat to the same region, and indicating the next bowl will travel the same way, towards sweeper cover for four.

However, what transpired was an absolute brain fade moment for Pakistan. Pr???asad bowled with a little extra nip which Sohail missed completely and saw his stumps rattled.

Recently, speaking on “The Greatest Rivalry podcast”, Waqar Younis recalled the exact moment and revealed how the dismissal of Sohail proved to be a turning point that made the game swung in India’s favour.

“To be very honest, we were shocked by the way he [Sohail] was behaving on the field. He was tonking the ball all over the park, why did he need to do that? I guess, the pressure got to him.”

“He batted superbly, he was looking really good and I think he scored 55 off not many deliveries (55 off 46). And Saeed Anwar also. We lost our first wicket when Pakistan were 85-odd (84) in the first ten overs. We were cruising, and then once we lost Saeed Anwar and then Aamir Sohail straightaway, it just went wrong,” remarked Younis on the podcast.

The legendary pacer further talked about how Pakistan’s middle-order failed to rise to the occasion, and the pressure of the game got better of Pakistani batsmen.

“Inzamam-ul-Haq and Ijaz Ahmed, they went into a shell,” he said. “And full credit should be given to Anil Kumble, when he came in and Prasad came in for his second spell, he sort of started nipping the ball a little bit. And Pakistan got so much pressure and once we lost Ijaz and Inzamam within an over or so, it became very very difficult.”

There is no doubt that the India–Pakistan cricket rivalry is one of the most hot-blooded sports rivalries in the world. No wonder, this competitiveness has also produced some of the most memorable battles in cricket. The skirmish between Pakistani bowlers and Indian batsmen is something fans are mostly fond of, especially in the ’90s when the two countries faced each other a lot at Sharjah.

One such instance took place between former Pakistan captain Aamer Sohail and veteran India batsman Na??vjot Singh Sidhu in the 1996 Pepsi Cup. Numerous reports at the time claimed that Sidhu had threatened to ?beat Sohail with his bat after losing his cool. However, various versions of the story have reported other things as well.

Speaking about the same, Sohail has recalled the infamous episode and elucidated what actually happened in that game. On his YouTube channel, Sohail revealed that Sidhu was unhappy with speedster Waqar Younis’ sledging in the game and had asked Sohail to advise his bowler not to hurl abuses.

“The incident took place when I was captaining Pakistan in 1996 in a match at Sharjah against India. Sidhu paaji was batting somewhere in the 90s,” said Sohail.

“In the middle of an over, he came to me angrily and said ‘Aamir paaji, teach your fast bowler. He is doing this wrong’, so I asked him ‘paaji, what happened’. So, he said ‘he’s throwing abuses at me’. So I told him ‘paaji, ignore him,” the 53-year-old added.

“He’s a fast bowler; they have a habit of talking’. So he said, ‘no, no, say whatever you want but don’t give abuses’. So I said ‘okay paaji, I will tell him after the game, you go on and play’. That’s all that happened, and I don’t know what he is thinking and bringing up this incident. This is the truth,” concluded Sohail.

In the m??atch, Sachin Tendulkar (118)?? and Sidhu (101) had built a 231-run partnership for the second wicket to take the game away from Pakistan. The duo guided India to post a humongous total of 305 runs on the board. In response, Pakistan were bundled out for 277 and lost the match by 28 runs.

Not so long ago, Former Pakistan cricketer Moin Khan had showered praises on Indian skipper Virat Kohli projecting him as the best player of the current generation. He h?ad stated that Kohli would break many records?? and become a legend.

Now, another former Pakistani player Aamer Sohail has added a new chapter in Kohli’s career by drawing his comparison with the all-time great Pakistan batsman Javed Miandad. Sohail believed that just like Miandad, Kohli’s greatness impacts on his teammates and their game has also been improved over the years.

“The most crucial point for me is that big players break out. They are individually great, but their greatness does not help the team at all. When you talk about Pakistan’s cricket history and its greatness, the first name that comes to mind is Javed Miandad,” said Sohail on his YouTube channel.

Sohail articulated that Miandad used to inspire other cricketers via his impressive gameplay and Kohli does the same. That is the reason teammates ??around Kohli have improved a lot.

“His greatness is still talked about to this day because he used to raise the level of play of the rest of the team. When you stitch a long partnership with him, you used to learn so much, and get inspired that you want to improve more. This is what Kohli has done as well. If you look around Kohli, every player has improved alongside him, and this is why Kohli gets the tag of a great player,” added the former left-handed genius.

Miandad has appeared for Paki??stan in 124 Tests, and 233 ODIs. He was rated as one of the finest batsmen of his era. Miandad has amassed 8832 Test runs at an average of 52.57 and 7381 runs at an average of 41.70 in ODIs.

Kohli, on the other hand, is cons??idered as one of the best batsmen of the current generation. The 31-year-old has broken multiple records across all formats, having scored 26 Test hundreds and 41 ODI to??ns till now. The right-hander is also the leading run-getter in T20Is (2744) across the world.

Sohail also explained the reason behind Kohli’s greatness and consistency he has achieved in the run-making process.

“Let me explain why Virat Kohli has become a great player? When he burst onto the scene, he was flamboyant, aggressive, and liked to team up with life. Very quickly, he realised that I need to separate my professional life with my personal life. That really benefited him,” analysed Sohail.

“The guidance he received after that you need to do away with certain things to become a consistent player for India – and he did so. He improved his defensive technique. When he got a chance to play for India in 2008, and then when he made a move to T20I in 2010, and then he made his debut in 2011 – during this time he found his game. He realised what his strengths were and how he needs to take them forward. He also realised what his weakness was, and how can he improve upon it, or camouflage it. He kept improving his game, and he dominated in world cricket,” the Lahore-born added.

The former Somerset cricketer articulated that Kohli’s determination and passion has made him one of the greatest players. Sohail stated that Kohli respects the game, his fans, and he values the jersey he wears whenever he goes in the middle.

“But here are four primary reasons I believe why he became a great player. The first point is passion and determination. An average player, when they represent their country, they are happy with the performances as long as they can stay in the team. They are just satisfied with that. But great players do not let their passion and determination deteriorate. This cannot be taught; this comes from within when you respect the game, your fans, and the colours that you wear and the country you represent,” the 53-year-old added further.

Sohail specified that Kohli wasn’t as good as he currently is when he burst onto the scene, but the Delhi-born paid attention to the advice he received regarding how to improve one’s game, and he kept on growing.

“The second point is to desire to become a better player and be coachable – this is what has been seen in Kohli. In the beginning, he used to hit shots. But then he was told that you have to play like this, so he realised himself and kept on improving. His adaptability has come because of this. In different countries, with different bowling attack, in different situations, he has different trigger movements all the time. He uses his footwork accordingly. He has dominated every bowling line-up in the world. When you play like this, it makes a player ready to accept challenges. This is why Virat Kohli’s mental toughness is increasing,” concluded Sohail.

The war of words between ex-Pakistani cricketers is not a new thing in cricket. Many former players in the past have been involved in verbal exchanges post their retirement. Latest on the list is former Internationals Aamer Sohail and Wasim Akram. Recently, Sohail blamed Akram for making sure the Pakistan team did not win the World ?Cups after 1992.

“Look, the biggest contribution by Wasim Akram for Pakistan cricket was making sure Pakistan does not win a World Cup after 92. Imran Khan should be very grateful to him, and he is, by awarding him the presidential award. If he [Wasim] was sincere with Pakistan, we would have easily won the 1996, 1999 and 2003 World Cups,” Sohail was quoted as saying by The Dawn.

Now, after Sohail’s serious allegations, former Pakistani captain Akram has responded. He said that even after retiring from the game 17 years ago, some people are still using his name to bring attention toward themselves, it’s not good to see.

“I get depressed when I hear such negative things being said about me. I retired from cricket 17 years ago, but people still take my name to further their own interests,” said Wasim as tweeted by Pakistani journalist Saj Saddiq.

Earlier, Sohail had also pointed out the fact that post-1992 World Cup win, desperate attempts were being m??ade to remove whosoever was in charge an??d felicitate Akram as the captain of the team.

“It’s very simple. Put the 1992 World Cup to one side and talk about the 1996 World Cup. In 1995, Ramiz Raja was captain. Saleem Malik was the captain before that, he was very successful, and if he could have spent one more year as captain, then Wasim would not have been leading the side,” Sohail had said.

“If you look at what happened till 2003, there was this persistence before every World Cup to remove the captain and put Wasim Akram in that role,” the southpaw had added.

World Cup-winning Pakistan opener Aamer Sohail has blamed former captain Wasim Akram for m??aking sure the Men in Green did not win the World Cups in 1996, 1999 and 2003.

According to Sohail, having m??ade Akram the captain of Pa?kistan for the 2003 World-Cup in the last minute and persisting with him for the leadership role harmed Pakistan cricket big time.

Further, Aamer named Ramiz Raja and Saleem Malik as better captains when comp??ared ??to Akram.

“It’s very simple. Put the 1992 World Cup to one side and talk about the 1996 World Cup. In 1995, Ramiz Raja was captain. Saleem Malik was the captain before that, he was very successful and if he could have spent one more year as captain then Wasim would not have been leading the side,” Sohail was quoted as saying by The Dawn.

“If you look at what happened till 2003, there was this persistence before every World Cup to remove the captain and put Wasim Akram in that role,” added Sohail.

Furthermore, Sohail, who played under Imran Khan during their successful 1992 World Cup campaign, sarcastically s??lammed his former captain for handing Akram with the presidential award.

“Look, the biggest contribution by Wasim Akram for Pakistan cricket was making sure Pakistan does not win a World Cup after 92. Imran Khan should be very grateful to him, and he is, by awarding him the presidential award. If he [Wasim] was sincere with Pakistan, we would have easily won 1996, 1999 and 2003 World Cups.”

Sohail, ??renowned for his bold remarks during his stint as a commentator post-retirement, demanded a probe on Akram regarding the matter.

The recent fixing case of Umar Akmal has opened a can of worms within the cricketing frat??ernity in Pakistan??.

“All of this drama happened for a reason. This should be investigated. The culprit behind all this should be brought to the forefront,” concluded Sohail.
