Reliving the 2011 World Cup final

The 2011 World Cup final, a clash between two Asian giants, witnessed a riveting contest as Sri Lanka set a formidable target of 275 runs, propelled by Mahela Jayawardene‘s sublime century. However, India showcased resilience, with Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan making crucial breakt??hroughs to contain the opposition.

India’s chase began with adversity as Virender Sehwag fell early, followed by the departure of Sachin Tendulkar. Nonetheless, Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir steadied the ship with a pivotal partnership, laying the foundation for Dhoni’s masterstroke.

As Dhoni joined Gambhir in the middle, their partnership flourished, with both batters notching vital half-centuries. Indian cricketing legend Yuvraj Singh has dropped a bombshell that caught many by surprise. The veteran all-rounder openly admitted that he and former Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni were not close friends. This revelation se?nt shockwaves through the cricketing community, leaving fans both bewildered and curious.

The glorious cricketing journey Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni share

Yuvraj and Dhoni’s cricketing journey is one that many fans hold dear to their hearts. They shared memorable moments on the field, playing pivotal roles in India’s victories during the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. While Dhoni led the team with calm composure on both the occasions, Yuvraj contributed with brilliant all-round performances. Yuvraj even won the title of Player of the Tournament in the 2011 edition of the ODI World Cup.

Throughout their time together, rumours about Yuvraj and Dhoni’s friendship swirled, but both players refrained from discussing it openly and were often seen sharing a laugh despite the speculations. However, Yuvraj’s recent admission has added a new layer of complexity to their relationship.

‘We were only friends because of cricket’: Yuvraj’s startling revelation

In his recent candid interview on Ranveer Allahbadia‘s TRS podcast, Yuvraj revealed that his friendship with Dhoni was primarily based on their shared love for cricket, and they weren’t friends off the field. Nevertheless, he went on to emphasize that they both had an unwavering commitment for their nation whenever they stepped onto the cricket field despite their off-field differences.

“Me and Mahi are not close friends. We were friends because of cricket, we played together. Mahi’s lifestyle was very different from me, so we were never close friends, we were only friends because of cricket. When me and Mahi went on the ground, we gave more than 100% to our country. In that, he was captain, I was vice-captain. When I came into the team, I was 4 years junior. When you are captain and vice-captain, there will be decision differences,” said Yuvraj.

Yuvraj acknowledges Dhoni for showing him the true picture

Yuvraj also revealed a crucial moment in ??his career where he turned to Dhoni for advice. This happened just before the 2019 World Cup, as he sought guidance about his future in the sport. Being the forthright person, Dhoni provided Yuvraj with the harsh reality that the selection committee was not considering him for the tournament. Yuvraj appreciated this honesty, acknowledging that it helped him understand his position in the team at that time.

“Sometimes he made decisions I didn’t like, sometimes I made decisions he didn’t like. That happens in every team. When I was at the end of my career, when I wasn’t getting the right picture about my career, I asked him for advice. He was the guy who told me that the selection committee is not looking you right now. I was like, at least I got to know the real picture. This is just before 2019 World Cup. That is the reality,” revealed the 41-year-old.

betvisa cricket2011 World Cup – Cricket Times - betvisa888 cricket bet //betvisa68.com/2023/10/cwc-2023-suresh-raina-reminisces-about-sachin-tendulkars-advice-during-the-2011-odi-world-cup-quarterfinal-against-australia/ Mon, 09 Oct 2023 03:05:05 +0000 //betvisa68.com/?p=100670

During the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, Suresh Raina played a pivotal role in India‘s journey to victory. His contributions, particularly in the quarterfinal and semifinal matches, were instrumental in securing India’s place in the final. In the quarterfinal showdown against Australia, Raina showcased his mettle by scoring an unbeaten 34 runs. It was a fixture where India faced a daunting target of 261, and Raina’s composed innings, despite the pressure, proved crucial.

Raina’s impactful partnership with Yuvraj Singh

One of the standout moments of Raina’s 2011 World Cup journey was his 74-run partnership with Yuvraj Singh during the quarterfinal game against Australia. Facing a stiff target, Raina and Yuvraj combined forces to form a formidable partnership. Their synergy in the middle was not only impressive but also critical to India’s chances of progressing in the tournament. Raina’s ability to anchor the innings while keeping the scoreboard ticking and Yuvraj’s aggressive stroke play complemented each other perfectly. Together, they took India closer to victory and played a vital role in the team’s triumph.

Sachin Tendulkar’s inspirational words

During that crucial quarterfinal encounter, Raina revealed that he drew inspiration from none other than the cricketing legend, Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar’s words of encouragement instilled confidence in Raina, who was still relatively inexperienced in World Cup cricket at the time. Tendulkar’s mentorship and belief in Raina’s abilities had a profound impact on his performance in that match. It was a testament to the camaraderie and mentorship within the Indian cricket team.

“We were chasing 261 and when [MS] Dhoni was out, I joined Yuvraj Singh at 187 for five. We had to dig in, we had to take responsibility and play the ball, not the occasion and that’s what me and Yuvi did. In a quarter-final against the reigning champions, you need to bring your a-game and we delivered,” Raina was quoted as saying by The Times Of India.

“I remember the stadium being full of fans shouting and screaming and before I went in to bat, I was sitting with Sachin [Tendulkar]. He told me to go out there, take the chase deep, stay calm and breathe. He told me I could do it and I had already played 100 ODIs by that time, so I knew how to play those crucial knocks. I was very calm and composed and I thought ‘Let’s do it for India’,” the 36-year-old added

Insights into India’s chances in the World Cup 2023

Reflecting on his own experiences in the 2011 World Cup, Raina offered insights into India’s performance in the ongoing ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023, hosted in India. He discussed the team’s strengths, strategies, and the importance of key players stepping up in crucial moments. Raina’s perspective as a former World Cup winner added depth to his analysis of India’s campaign in the current tournament.

“When India are playing at home, we know how much expectation there is but the team must try and play the situation. We won the World Cup here in 2011, Australia won in Australia in 2015 and England won on home soil four years ago. There is a very good opportunity here for India to win the World Cup in front of their own fans and I am confident they can do it,” the Muradnagar-born cricketer concluded.

The pressure of performing in a home World Cup can be challenging for even the most accomplished cricketers. As Team India gears up for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, they find themselves in exceptional form, having recently clinched the Asia Cup 2023 and secured a 2-1 victory over Australia in a three-match ODI series. However, managing the weight of expectations and external pressures is crucial for success. In this context, former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, a pivotal member of the 2011 World Cup-winning team, shared insightful lessons on how they handled pressure during their triu??mphant campaign.

Triumph in 2011: India’s second World Cup victory

The CWC 2011 marked a historic moment for Indian cricket, as they emerged as champions, securing their second World Cup title after their iconic win in 1983. Yuvraj Singh and Sachin Tendulkar played instrumental roles in this successful campaign. Yuvraj’s exceptional all-round performance earned him the prestigious title of the ‘Player of the Tournament,’ as he showcased his prowess by scoring 362 runs, including a century and four half-centuries, and taking 15 crucial wickets. Tendulkar, the maestro of Indian cricket, was the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament, amassing a total of 482 runs.

Handling adversity: India’s response to a loss

Even in their victorious 2011 quadrennial event journey, India faced challenges, including a group-stage loss to South Africa. Such setbacks often attract intense media scrutiny an??d criticism. It was during this critical phase that Tendulkar offered a valuable piece of advice to help the team cope with external pressures and stay focused on their goal of winning the World Cup.

Tendulkar’s wisdom: Blocking out the noise

Tendulkar suggested that the team should stop? paying attention to media coverage, particularly during their interactions with fans at airpo??rts. Instead, he recommended using headphones as a means to block out external distractions and negative comments. This approach allowed the players to maintain their concentration on their game and their mission of winning the World Cup.

“Now, distraction is a bit more because that time there was no social media. There was distraction with media and people. We were trying to focus on the game, and in the world cup, we had lost to South Africa – a game we should have won. The media started to go berserk. Sachin sat down with the team and said, ‘we need to stop watching television, stop reading the papers. Use our headphones when we are going through crowds in airports. Just focus on the world cup’. The team agreed, we just followed that and it really worked,” Yuvraj was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

“Because there’s anyway so much pressure. Problem with India is that, people think only Indian team will win. It’s a big World Cup, there are so many good teams out there, and we got to be really focussed on your tasks at hand,” the Indian stalwart concluded.

Yuvraj emphasized that the team collectively agreed with Tendulkar’s suggestion, highlighting the unity and camaraderie within the squad. This approach ultimately proved effective in alleviating pressure and preventing external criticism from affecting their performance. India’s resolute focus on their game paid off, as they went on to become World Cup champions.

Crucial warm-up matches ahead of the World Cup

In their preparations for the upcoming World Cup, Team India will play two warm-up games. The first warm-up match is against England at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Saturday, September 30. Following that, they will face the Netherlands in their?? second warm-up fixture on October 3 at the Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram. These games will provide crucial opportunities for fine-tuning their strategies and building momentum before the competition begins.

In ?his interaction with Vimal, Rohit unveiled some of his favourite cricket preferences, including the name of the bowler who gave him the toughest challenge, the batter with the best pull shot and much more.

Rohit Sharma: A cricketing sensation

His leadership skills and exceptional batting performances have earned him numerous accolades over the years, including India’s recent triumph in the Asia Cup. Rohit’s interesting cricketing choices

Now let’s delve into some of Rohit’s personal favourite cricket preferences, which he shared with Vimal during the rapid-fire round:

Best cover drive technique

Rohit’s choice for the best cover drive technique was his fellow teammate, Virat Kohli. Notably, Kohli is well-known for his elegant stroke??play, and his cover drives? are indeed a sight to behold.

Best straight drive

Rohit named legendary Sachin Tendulkar as the master of the straight drive. It is worth mentioning that Tendulkar’s precision and timing while playing this shot was unmatchable, and it was his trademark shot during his playing days.

Rising talent

Rohit even praised Steyn for being a class play?er with sheer pace and the ability to consistently bowl in the right areas.

“If a bowler who has ever challenged me and I enjoyed playing against him then I’ll have say Dale Steyn. He is a class player, he got all the skills and I think this is the reason he doesn’t miss a bounce and can swing so fast and I think there are very less people who could swing 140+ and I think he was the one who could do it consistentl,” said Rohit.

Amidst the buzz and anticipation surrounding the marquee event, former India opener Virender Sehwag took a trip down memory lane to reflect on the strategies that brought India success in the 2011 World Cup. Virender Sehwag reflects on the strategy team India opted for during the 2011 World Cup campaign

In a recent interaction with Cricbuzz, one of the fundamental principles that Sehwag highlighted from the 2011 World Cup campaign was the team’s decision to shield themselves from external distractions, particularly the news media. He explained that this approach was aimed at reducing the pressure that often accompanies high-profile tournaments like the World Cup. Sehwag further emphasized that this decision, endorsed by then-coach Gary Kirsten and captain Dhoni, played a pivotal role in keeping the team unified?? and focused.

“We decided we won’t read newspapers, don’t listen to outside noise. Anything which can add to pressure, we won’t do. It had become a rule, and almost everyone genuinely followed that. We stayed together, we tried to enjoy and do team-building exercises. Because it’s easy to drift apart in long tournaments such as these. Gary Kirsten and MS Dhoni ensured that we stay together,” Sehwag explained.

Sehwag shares MS Dhoni’s powerful one-line advice from 2011 with Rohit Sharma and Co.

However, the most significant nugget of wisdom from Dhoni was encapsulated in a simple yet profound one-liner, which Sehwag shared with Rohit Sharma and Co. ahead of the important ODI World Cup 2023.

India’s inability to win International Cricket Council (ICC) events has been a major talking point over the past few years. The last time Men in Blue won an ICC Trophy was ten years back when they lifted the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy under the captainship of world’s most decorated skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Discussing about the team’s impotence in winning ICC events on his official YouTube channel, India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin backed Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The 36-year-old termed the criticism over not winning a world cup or any other major ICC event unjustified, and he even questioned the critics giving an example of legendary Sachin Tendulkar. The Tamil Nadu cricketer also talked about Dhoni’s triumph and hailed him as a stalwart.

“Even Sachin Tendulkar won the World Cup in his sixth attempt. That was the situation for a stalwart of Indian cricket. Just because another stalwart in MS Dhoni came in and won a World Cup as soon as he took charge, doesn’t mean that it will happen for everyone, right?” said Ashwin.

Notably, India currently ?in their cabinet have? three world cups along with an ICC Champions Trophy, and three of those four titles came under the leadership of Dhoni.

Ashwin ?also pointe?d out that both Virat and Rohit have won a few major ICC events and should be given some more time.

Virat Kohli won ICC tournament in 2011 (World Cup), and 2013 when we won the Champions Trophy. Rohit Sharma has also won the Champions Trophy. So, we can give them some space. They are playing in bilateral series, IPL and so many other matches. But when it comes to ICC tournaments, you need those crux moments to go your way,” he added.

The Men in Blue last won a world cup tournament in 2011 on home soil, and there is a chance to once agai?n repeat the triumph as India will be hosting an ODI World Cup event in October-November this year.
