The Indian cricket team registered a commanding seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first T20I of the three-match series, held in Gwalior on Sunday, October 6. Chasing a target of 128, India ac??hieved the total in just 11.5 overs with 49 balls remaining, marking their largest win in T20Is in terms of balls remaining. The match took place at the newly inaugurated Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium, which hosted its first international game.

Hardik Pandya’s no-look shot steals the show

Among the many highlights of India’s emphatic win, Hardik Pandyas audacious “no-look” boundary off Taskin Ahmed stood out. During his blistering knock of 39* off just 16 balls, Hardik displayed his signature flamboyance by hitting three consecutive fours, including the viral no-look shot. In the 12th over, Taskin delivered a back-of-a-length ball on Hardik’s body, and without even glancing at the ball’s trajectory, Pandya ramped it over the wicketkeeper’s head for four. His complete confidence in the stroke, combined with his calm demeanor, captured the crowd’s imagination and spread rapidly on social media. The shot was a perfect embodiment of Hardik’s fearless approach and skill with the bat.

India’s bowlers set the tone against Bangladesh

Earlier in the match, India’s bowlers laid the foundation for the victory by restricting Bangladesh to a modest total of 127. Arshdeep Singh was the star with the ball, picking up 3/14, including the key wickets of openers Litton Das and Parvez Hossain Emon. Varun Chakravarthy also contributed with 3/31, while debutant Mayank Yadav impressed with his pace, taking 1/21. Despite some resistance from Najmul Hossain Shanto (27 off 25) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (35 off 32), Bangladesh’s innings faltered at crucial moments.

In response, India’s top order made light work of the target. Alongside Hardik’s explosive innings, both Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson played handy knocks, scoring 2??9 runs each. Hardik finished the chase in style, hitting a six off Taskin to seal the game and give India a 1-0 lead in the series.

The Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian side secured a dominant seven-wicket win against Bangladesh in the opening T20I of the three-match series held in Gwalior on October 6. The match, hosted at the newly inaugurated Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium, saw the Indian team effortlessly chase down a modest target of 128 in just 11.5 overs, leaving a staggering 49 deliveries unused. This remarkable victory set a new benchmark for India, recording their biggest margin in terms of balls remaining while pursuing a total over 100, surpassing their previous best of 41 balls against Zimbabwe in 2016.

Bowlers steal the show for India: Arshdeep Singh and Mayank Yadav shine

India’s resounding win was set up by a stellar performance from their bowlers, led by Arshdeep Singh, along with debutant Mayank Yadav and comeback star Varun Chakravarthy. Mayank, making his much-anticipated international debut, showcased his raw pace and ability. The 22-year-old, renowned for his consistent 150 kmph deliveries in the IPL, delivered a fiery spell, returning figures of 1/21. His maiden international wicket came when he dismissed veteran Mahmudullah, who mistimed a shot to Washington Sundar at deep? point. Concerns about h?is fitness were put to rest as Mayank clocked speeds of 145+ kmph in his initial overs.

Returning to the side after nearly three years, Varun proved his mettle with a superb 3/31. The mystery spinner’s variations and control troubled the Bangladeshi batters, claiming the crucial scalps of Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy. Despite a costly start, Varun quickly adapted, ensuring Bangladesh could only muster 127. Complementing these efforts, Arshdeep’s left-arm pace delivered a clinical 3/14, dismantling the top order with early wickets in the powerplay, including Litton Das and Parvez Hossain Emon.

Efficient chase led by Hardik Pandya’s quick knock

India’s pursuit of the target was swift and precise, thanks to aggressive knocks from Suryakumar (29), Sanju Samson (29) and a finishing flourish from Hardik Pandya (39*). The chase was wrapped up in 11.5 overs, cementing India’s series lead and marking the return of international cricket to Gwalior after a 14-year hiatus. With the new venue making its international debut, India’s comprehensive win laid a strong foundation for the remainder of the series. Their disciplined bowling and explosive batting provided little opportunity for Bangladesh to recover, establish?i?ng India’s dominance early on.

Phoebe Litchfield delivered a stunning batting performance in the 1st T20I between Australia Women and New Zealand Women at Mackay, helping Australia secure a 5-wicket victory with 8 balls to spare. Litchfie?ld played a match-winning knock of 64* off 43 balls, showcasing her consistency and composure under pressure. Her 11 boundaries helped Australia easily chase the target of 144, and she was rightfully named the Player of the Match for her brilliant performance.

New Zealand Women’s batting struggles to set a high target

New Zealand Women, led by Suzie Bates, posted 143/7 in their 20 overs. Bates top-scored with 33 off 27 balls, while Maddy Green contributed 35 off 33. However, their innings lacked big partnerships, with wickets falling regularly. Georgia Plimmer (11), Amelia Kerr (7) and Brooke Halliday (5) struggled to build momentum. Leigh Kasperek‘s (14) and Jess Kerr (11*) contributions helped New Zealand reach a competitive total. Australia’s bowlers, led by Megan Schutt and Sophie Molineux, kept the scoring rate under control.

Australian bowlers keep New Zealand in check

Australia’s bowling unit performed well, restricting New Zealand to 143. Schutt was economical, taking 1 wicket for 23 runs in her 4 overs. Molineux also impressed with her 1/19 in 4 overs. Tayla Vlaeminck was a bit expensive, giving away 36 runs but picked up a crucial wicket. Georgia Wareham and Annabel Sutherland also chipped in with a wicket?? each. Their collective effort ensured that New Zealand couldn’t post an imposing total despite their best efforts.

Australia’s chase anchored by Phoebe Litchfield

Australia’s chase started shakily with early wickets falling. Beth Mooney (13), Alyssa Healy (17), Ellyse Perry (8) and Tahlia McGrath (6) were dismissed cheaply, putting pressure on the team. However, Litchfield stood firm, anchori??ng the innings with a fluent 64* off 43 balls. Wareham provided valuable support with 26 off 20 before being dismissed. Litchfield’s remarkable stroke play and calm approach guided Australia to victory, with Sutherland (4*) hi?tting the winning runs.

Australia registered a commanding 28-run victory over England in the first T20I at Southampton, securing a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Travis Head‘s explosive knock of 59 off just 23 balls set the tone for Australia, while their bowlers, led by Josh Hazlewood and Sean Abbott, ensured England never gained momentum in their chase. Head’s early fireworks and the collective bowling effort proved decisive as the visitors outclassed England in all departments.

Travis Head’s blistering start powers Australia to a competitive total

Head, opening the innings alongside Matthew Short, gave Australia a flying start. Head’s 59 off 23 balls included a flurry of boundaries and sixes, particularly in a game-changing over against Sam Curran, where he took 30 runs. His quickfire half-century came at a strike rate of 256.52, putting immense pressure on England’s bowlers. Together with Short, Head laid the foundation for Australia’s total of 179. The partnership accumulated 86 runs in the first six overs, with Head being the main aggressor, forcing England onto the back foot early on.

Australia’s middle-order struggles but Josh Inglis steadies the ship

Despite the strong start, Australia’s middle order wobbled with the dismissals of Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis and Tim David, all falling cheaply. England’s bowlers, led by Liam Livingstone, brought the home side back into contention during the middle overs. Livingstone’s all-round brilliance saw him take three key wickets, including Short and Stoinis. However, wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis provided stability in the middle order with a vital knock of 37 off 27 balls. His contribution ensured Australia p?osted a challenging total of 179 in 19.3 overs, despite a late-order collapse.

England’s batting falters in the chase

England’s response was lackluster as they struggled to build momentum. Phil Salt, captaining the side for the first time, showed intent with 20 off 12 balls but fell early to Abbott. Will Jacks and debutant Jordan Cox failed to make significant contributions, leaving England in trouble. Livingstone’s 37 off 27 balls was the only notable performance with the bat, but his dismissal in the 14th over, courtesy of Josh Hazlewood, effectively ended England’s hopes. Hazlewood’s clever variation and Abbott’s relentless pressure saw England bundled out for 151, falling 28 runs short of the target.

Australian bowlers seal victory with disciplined effort

Australia’s bowling unit, led by Hazlewood, executed their plans to perfection. Hazlewood, returning from injury, claimed crucial wickets and applied pressure throughout the innings. Abbott was equally effective, taking three wickets, including key dismissals of Salt and Curran. The Australian bowlers used the conditions under the lights to their advantage, hitting hard lengths and making scoring difficult for England’s lower order. With England losing wickets at regular intervals, Australia cruised to victory, establishing an early lead in the series.

In the first T20I of the three-match series held at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on  Saturday (July 27), India secured a commanding 43-run victory over Sri Lanka.

Suryakumar Yadav’s high-class batting

Batting first, India posted their highest T20I total in Sri Lanka, scoring 213/7 in 20 overs. Captain Suryakumar Yadav led the charge with a brilliant 58 off 26 balls, which included 8 boundaries and 2 sixes. The opening partnership between Shubman Gill (34 off 16) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (40 off 21??) set a solid foundation, contributing 74 runs from ju?st 36 balls.

Despite a brief slump where India lost two quick wickets, Yadav’s explosive innings and Rishabh Pant’s vital knock of 49 from 33 balls propelled the total beyond 200. Pant’s innings, which included 6 fours and one solitary six, was crucial in accelerating the scoring rate. Hardik Pandya and Riyan Parag added some valuable lower-order runs??, though both were dismissed?? trying to push the scoring rate in the final overs.

Matheesha Pathirana’s impressive spell

Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana was the standout bowler, claiming 4 wickets for 40 runs. He was particularly impactful with his 151 km/h yorker that dismissed Hardik and his subsequent spell that kept Sri Lanka in the game. Despite Pathirana’s efforts, Sri Lanka struggled to contain the Indian batters and couldn’t stopped them from breaching the 200 runs mark.

Sri Lanka’s fightback and collapse

In response, Sri Lanka started strongly with openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis adding 84 runs for the first wicket. Nissanka, who top-scored with 79 off 48 balls, and Mendis (45 off 27) gave Sri Lanka a strong start. However, the Indian bowlers, particularly Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel, made crucial breakthroughs. Patel dismissed Nissanka and Kusal Perera in quick succession, while Arshdeep and Parag played key roles in restricting Sri Lanka’s chase. Kamindu Mendis showed some resistance with a quick-fire 12, but India’s d?isciplined bowling and fielding ensured Sri Lanka were bowled out for 170 in 19.2 overs. Parag’s tight final overs and a crucial run-out played pivotal roles in sealing the win for India.

India are set to start a new chapter in their cricketing journey under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav. The team is gearing up for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, with the first match scheduled for Saturday (July 27), in Pallekele. This series marks the beginning of a new leadership era, and the Indian squad is a mix of p??romising youngsters and sea?soned players, aiming for a successful campaign.

Wasim Jaffer’s playing XI for India

Former Indian batter and commentator Wasim Jaffer has revealed his ideal playing XI on social media platform X for India in the opening match against Sri Lanka. As anticipated, Yashasvi Jaiswal will open the batting alongside vice-captain Shubman Gill. Gill’s solid technique and consistent form are expected to provide a stable start, while Jaiswal’s aggressive stroke play adds a dynamic edge to the top order.

Middle-order and all-rounders

Rishabh Pant retained his position as the wicketkeeper-batter, known for his aggressive batting and sharp wicketkeeping skills. He is slotted at the number three position in Jaffer’s lineup. Suryakumar, the captain, will bring his innovative and explosive batting style to the number four spot, which is c?rucial in steering the team ??to a competitive total.

Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya are included as the all-rounders at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively, providing depth in batting and valuable medium-pace options. Rinku Singh, known for his finishing abilities, is positioned at No. 7 to add firepower to the lower middle order. Reliable spin all-rounder Axar Patel and leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi are included at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively, with Bishnoi’s leg-spin being a potent wea??pon in the middle?? overs.

Pace attack and Sanju Samson’s exclusion

The pace attack will be spearheaded by Mohammed Siraj, with Arshdeep Singh adding fresh energy to the bowling lineup. Notably, Jaffer has chosen to ignore Sanju Samson as a wicketkeeper-batter, opting for Pant instead. Samson, who was benched throughout the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024, played three matches in the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe and s?cored a match-winning fifty in the final game. Despite this, Jaffer has decided to retain Pant? for his consistency and glove work.

Zimbabwe produced a spirited performance with the ball to stun India and register a 13-run win in the first T20I of the five-match series in Harare on Saturday (July 6). Sikandar Raza and his bowlers managed to defend 115 runs as India were bundled out for just 102 runs in 19.5 overs, marking India’s first T20I loss of the year. Raza and Tendai Chatara picked up three wickets each and Clive Madande‘s late blitz helped secure the victory, leaving India to rue their poor bowling in the death overs and rash batting.

Ravi Bishnoi’s remarkable bowling against Zimbabwe

India won the toss and opted to field first. The decision seemed justified initially as Mukesh Kumar cleaned up Innocent Kaia for a duck in the second over. Wesley Madhevere and Brian Bennett then put together a steady partnership for Zimbabwe. However, Ravi Bishnoi turned the game in India’s favor by dismissing Bennett and Madhevere in his first two overs. Despite a steadying effort from Raza and Dion Myers, Avesh Khan‘s dismissal of Raza triggered a collapse, reducing Zimbabwe to 90/9. Nevertheless, Madande had other plans, scoring 29 runs off 25 balls as the Indian pacers struggled with their yorkers. Bishnoi was the standout bowler for India, taking 4 wickets for 13 runs in his 4 overs.

India’s struggle in the chase

India’s chase started poorly with Abhishek Sharma being dismissed for a duck. Ruturaj Gaikwad also failed to make an impact, giving Zimbabwe hope. Riyan Parag‘s debut with the bat turned into a disappointment as he was dismissed for 2 runs, followed by Rinku Singh‘s dismissal for a duck. Shubman Gill kept India in the hunt, but Dhruv Jurel couldn’t provide much support and was dismissed for just 6 runs.

Raza dismissed Shubman Gill, leaving India at 47/6. Raza continued to shine by ending Bishnoi’s resistance. Although Avesh provided some hope with a score of 16 and a partnership with Washington Sundar, Raza’s catch put Zimbabwe back in control. Raza then cleaned up Mukesh Kumar, bringing his side close to win. Chatara bowled an excellent last over to sec??ure the victory for ?Zimbabwe.
