South Africa’s cricket captain, Temba Bavuma, has stirred debate by declaring? the ICC Champions Trophy a greater challenge than the 50-over World Cup.

Temba Bavuma explains why Champions Trophy is difficult than World Cup

Bavuma highlighted that the Champions Trophy’s format, with its limited number of matches, makes it difficult for teams to recover from a poor start.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to commence across Pakistan and Dubai on February 19, with South Africa facing Afghanistan in their opening match in Karac??hi on Feb??ruary 21.

“In the World Cup, you have time to take stock and step up. But in the Champions Trophy you can’t do that but we are hopeful of going one step further in the tournament.” He added, “Obviously, we have our sights on where we want to be in the Champions Trophy this time but the format makes it more challenging for teams when you look at the 50-over World Cup.”

Bavuma explained that in the Champions Trophy, teams must perform from the outset, as there is little margin for error. He noted that the World Cup provides teams with more opportun??ities to assess conditions and build momentum due to the nine group stage matches before the knock??outs.

South Africa, having been losing finalists in the T20 World Cup 2024 and finalists in the upcoming World Test ??Championship (WTC), are currently participating in a Tri-Series with?? Pakistan and New Zealand. However, several key players are yet to join the squad after the recently-concluded SA20 2025.

Bavuma confident of South Africa’s bowling resources for CT 2025

Bavuma sees the absence of key players as an opportunity for new talent to emerge. He stated, “It is a lovely opportunity for a couple of guys who have been doing well in domestic cricket and in T20 leagues to make a statement on what value they can add to the team.” He als?o expressed confidence in spinners Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi.

“Maharaj and Shamsi will give us a lot of help as we are presently tight for spin resources for the tri-series,” the 34-year-old said.

Despite Anrich Nortje’s absence, Bavuma is confident in the team’s bowling resources, backing the available resources to come good in the upcoming ICC tournament.

“We have bowlers who can bowl at high pace with the new ball and also get some shape,” Bavuma added further.

South Africa’s squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy:

Temba Bavuma (c), Corbin Bosch, To??ny de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, ?Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs, and Rassie van der Dussen.

New Zealand have announced their 15-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be held in a hybrid format co-hosted by Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates from February 19 to March 9.

The squad showcases a mix of e?xperienced players and emerging talents, but the absence of four notable players from the 2023 ODI World Cup roster has caught the att??ention of fans and analysts alike.

New Zealand’s performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup

In the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023, the Blackcaps delivered an impressive performance, reaching the semifinals before falling short against hosts India. Despite their valiant efforts, New Zealand was defeated by 70 runs in a high-stakes encounter.??? Several players who were key contributors during the tournament are now conspicuously missing from the Champions Trophy squad.

4 players excluded from New Zealand’s 2025 Champions Trophy ?squad after the 2023 World Cup triumph

1. Trent Boult

Trent Boult

Trent Boult, a cornerstone of New Zealand’s bowling attack, has not been included in the Champions Trophy squad. His absence is not a selection decision but a result of his retirement from ODI cricket following New Zealand’s semifinal loss in 2023. Boult’s impact on the tournament was significant, claiming 14 wickets in 10 matches and playing a pivotal role in guiding the Blackcaps to the knockout stage. His retirement marks the conclusion of a stellar ODI career, leaving an indelible legacy.

2. Jimmy Neesham

Jimmy Neesham

All-rounder Jimmy Neesham, who had a limited role in the 2023 World Cup, has also been left out. Neesham featured in just three matches, scoring 58 runs and taking two wickets. His performance, coupled with inconsistent form, likely contributed to his exclusion. His last appearance came against South Africa in November 2023, and he has struggled to regain hi???s peak form since.

3. Ish Sodhi

Ish Sodhi

Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, another player from the 2023 World Cup squad, is missing from the Champions Trophy lineup. Sodhi played only one match in the World Cup and failed to claim any wickets. His last international outing was against Sri Lanka in November 2024. With limited opportunities and an underwhelming performance, Sodhi’s exclusion signals New Zealand’s pivot toward other spinning options.

4.Tim Southee

Tim Southee

Tim Southee, one of New Zealand’s most seasoned bowlers, has also stepped away from the ODI format. Like Boult, Southee retired from ODI after the 2023 World Cup semifinal defeat. In the tournament, he took seven wickets in four matches, underscoring his value to the team. Southee’s departure marks the end of an illustrious career, leaving a legacy of leadership and consistency.

New Faces in the squad: Fresh talent on the rise

While the exclusion of four established players marks a significant change, New Zealand’s squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy also includes some exciting new talent. Will O’Rourke, Ben Sears, and Nathan Smith are all set to make their ICC tournament debuts. These young pacers have impressed in domestic cricket and will add fresh energ??y to New Zealand’s bowling attack. Sears, in particular, is making a return to the fold after recovering from a knee injury. His resilience and potential have earne??d him a spot in the squad, and he is expected to bring a fresh dynamic to the team.

O’Rourke and Smith, both rising stars in New Zealand’s domestic scene, will strengthen the pace attack alongside established names. With the support of all-rounder Michael Bracewell, these new faces are set to play a pivotal role in New Zealand’s bid for success in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Cricket Australia has unveiled its 15-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, a tournament set to take place in a hybrid mode that will be co-hosted by Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates from February 19 to March 9. While th??e squad includes a blend of seasoned campaigners and promising new faces, a few notable names from the victorious 2023 ODI World Cup squad have been omitted.

Australia’s triumph in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 was historic, marking their sixth title and solidifying their position as cricketing giants. However, some key players from that championship-winning squad have not been included in the Champions Trophy lineup.

3 players excluded from Australia’s 2025 Champions Trophy squad after the 2023 World Cup triumph

1. Sean Abbott

Sean Abbott

Sean Abbott, a 32-year-old bowling all-rounder, featured briefly in the 2023 ODI World Cup. He played just one match against Bangladesh, stepping in for Mitchell Starc, where he delivered a commendable performance by taking two wickets. Despite this, Abbott has not been included in the Champions Trophy squad, likely due to his recent performances. His last ODI appearance was against Pakistan in November 2024, and the selectors seem to have opted for fresh op??tions in his role.

2. Cameron Green

Cameron Green

Cameron Green, a promising 25-year-old batting all-rounder, played three matches during the 2023 World Cup, scoring 63 runs with a top score of 47. However, his bowling form was underwhelming, as he failed to take any wickets. A lower-back stress fracture has further hindered his participation, and his last ODI match was against England in September 2024. Green’s absence from the Champions Trophy squad is a blow, but his injury status made his exclusion inevitable.

3. David Warner

David Warner

David Warner, one of the standout performers in the 2023 World Cup, is also absent from the 2025 Champions Trophy squad. However, his exclusion comes on his own terms, as he retired from ODI cricket after Australia’s triumphant World Cup final against India. Warner was instrumental in Australia’s success, amassing 535 runs in 11 matches, including tw??o centuries. His retirement marks the end of an illustrious ODI career, leaving behind a legacy that wi??ll be remembered for generations.

New faces and returning stars

The 2025 squad reflects a shift towards a younger, more dynamic lineup. Matthew Short and Aaron Hardie have received their maiden call-ups, signaling Australia’s intent to groom fresh talent for the future. Both players bring versatility, with Short known for ?his explosive batting and Hardie e?xcelling as an all-rounder.

Additionally, right-arm medium-fast bowler Nathan Ellis makes a comeback after last playing an ODI in September 2023 against South Africa. Ellis’s inclusion highlights the selectors’ focus on enhancing the team’s bowling depth for the tournament.

Indian cricket fans are known for their passionate reactions to the national team’s performances. Be it celebrating victories or criticizing defeats, the emotions often spill over onto social media. On November 19, fans took to various platforms to recall India’s loss in the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia, which occurred exactly a year ago.

The heartbreak stemmed from a disappointing Indian batting performance, where the team was bowled out for 240 in 50 overs after losing the toss. Australia chased down the target comfortably in just 43 overs, powered by Travis Head’s magnificent 137 off 120 balls. The Indian pl??ayers, including both batters and bowlers, faced heavy backlash for their underwhelming display in the high-stakes match.

Troll targets Kuldeep Yadav on anniversary of the World Cup final loss

A year later, the criticism resurfaced as fans revisited the final. Among the Indian players, spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who went wicketless in the match, was singled out by a fan on X (formerly Twitter). Kuldeep’s figures in the final read 10-0-56-0, despite having claimed 15 wickets in the tour?nament leading up to the clash.

The fan’s tweet mocked the spinner, stating that while most Indian players were being criticized, Kuldeep had seemingly avoi???ded scrutiny.

“Sabki pelai ho rhi but Is bkl ko koi kyun nhi pel rha …” the user wrote.

Kuldeep comes up with a fiery response

Kuldeep, who rarely engages in online spats, chose to address the comment this time. In his response, he questioned the intentions of the troll, suggesting it could either be a ?paid comment or rooted in pers??onal animosity.

“Hanji kis cheez ki dikkat hai apko, itna pyara likhne ke liye paise mile ya koi Jati dusmani hai?” Kuldeep replied, silencing the critic.

The bold reply from the spinner earned widespread praise from fans, many of whom lauded his courage to stand up for himself amidst the cons?tant criticism.

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden has recently revealed his greatest ODI World Cup XI of all time. Hayden, renowned for his own contributions to Australia’s World Cup successes, has chosen a line-up that includes ??some of the most iconic f??igures in cricket history.

Hayden’s selection reflects his preference for players who have not only excelled individually but also contributed immensely to their teams’ World Cup triumphs over the years. His all-time XI boasts a blend of explosive batters, versatile all-rounders, and a formidable bowling attack, featuring legends from various eras of the sport. As fans dissect and debate his choices, Hayden’s XI stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of these cricketing greats and their indelible mark on the history of the World Cup.

Matthew Hayden’s greatest ODI World Cup XI of all time

Explosive opening pair

Adam Gilchrist (wk): The Australian wicketkeeper-batter was renowned for his explosive starts and acrobatic wicketkeeping. Gilchrist’s aggressive batting at the top of the order was a key component in Australia’s dominance in the early 2000s. He was part of Australia’s ODI World Cup winning teams in 1999, 2003 and 2007.

Virender Sehwag: The Indian opener’s fearless approach and ability to take on the bowlers from the first ball made him an ideal partner for Gilchrist. Sehwag’s quick scoring provided India with solid foundations in many matches. Sehwag was pa??rt of India’s 2011 World Cup winning side.

Rock solid middle order

Ricky Ponting: One of the most successful captains in cricket history, Ponting’s leadership and consistency with the bat were invaluable. His knack for performing in crucial matches cemented his place in the XI. Leading Australia in two World Cup wins in 2003 and 2007, Ponting was rightfully named as the captain.

Sachin Tendulkar: The ‘Master Blaster’ is the highest run-scorer in ODI history. Tendulkar’s remarkable performances across multiple World Cups made him a natural choice for any all-time XI. He missed out clinching the title by a close margin in 2003 but had his moment in 2011 when India won the World Cup after 28 years.

Brian Lara: The West Indian legend’s elegance and ability to dominate bowlers from around the world earn him a spot in the middle order. Lara’s flair and technique were instrumental in his many match-winning innings.

Dynamic all-rounder

Jacques Kallis: The South African all-rounder was considered one of the greatest cricketers of all time. Kallis’ proficiency with both bat and ball provides balance to Hayden’s XI, making him a crucial player in this line-up. Though, Kallis never won any World Cup but his contribution in ODIs is second to none.

The high-class bowling attack

Wasim Akram: The ‘Sultan of Swing’ from Pakistan was renowned for his ability to swing the ball both ways. Akram’s lethal bowling was a nightmare for batters in World Cups. Being part of 1992 World Cup winning side, Akram attained the legendary status and he is a natural choice for any all-time XI irrespective of the formats.

Waqar Younis: Akram’s partner-in-crime, Waqar was widely Known for his devastating reverse swing. He formed a formidable bowling partnership with Akram and his pace and ability to bowl toe-crushing yorkers made him a vital member of the bowling attack.

Shane Warne: The Australian leg-spin maestro is widely?? regarded a??s one of the best bowlers in cricket history. Warne’s ability to turn the ball sharply and his knack for taking crucial wickets counts him in any best XI side.

Muttiah Muralitharan: The highest wicket-taker in ODI history, Muralitharan’s spin wizardry bamboozled batters around the world. The Sri Lankan off-spinner’s inclusion in Hayden’s XI adds depth and variety to the spin department.

Glenn McGrath: McGrath’s pinpoint accuracy and consistency made him one of the most successful fast bowlers in World Cup history. The Australian pacer’s ability to deliver under pressure is well-documented. McGrath, too, was part of Australia’s World Cup winning team in 1999, 2003 and 2007.

Notable absence: Virat Kohli

The absence of Virat Kohli, one of the modern greats, has indeed raised eyebrows among cricket fans. Kohli’s impressive World Cup record and his stature in world cricket made him a strong contender for many. However, Hayden’s selection reflects his preference for players who have had a significant impact over a longer period in World Cup history.

Newly appointed head coach of Team India, Gautam Gambhir has recently left the door open for superstar players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to participate in the ODI World Cup 2027, provided they maintain their fitness and form. Following India’s recent T20 World Cup 2024 victory, both players announced their retirement from T20 ?internationals, signaling a focus solely on ODIs and Tests.

Upcoming challenges for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

Rohit and Kohli were instrumental in India’s campaign in the ODI World Cup 2023 but narrowly missed out on winning the title, as they were defeated by Australia by six wickets in the final. By the time? the next ODI World Cup rolls around in 2027, Rohit will be 40 years old, and Kohli will be over 38. Both players will need to commit rigorously to their fitness regimes and m??aintain top form to remain contenders for the tournament.

Kris Srikkanth’s critique of Rohit

Former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth has cast doubt on Rohit Sharma’s chances of participating in the 2027 World Cup. Srikkanth, who previously served as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chairman of sel?ectors, suggested that while Kohli is likely to be part of the squad, Rohit may struggle due to fitness concerns.

During a discussion with his son Anirudha on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth remarked, “Virat Kohli will play in the 2027 World Cup, but Rohit Sharma might faint.” This comment has sparked considerab?le debate among fans and analysts.

Rohit and Kohli’s journey in ODI World Cup

Virat won the ODI World Cup 2011 at the age of 22, while Rohit clinched the T20 World Cup 2027 as a young player. Both players secured their first ICC titles early in their careers, but since th??en, India’s wait for an ICC trophy has extended.

The duo celebrated victory in the 2013 Champions Trophy but faced a series of near-misses in subsequent tournaments, before eventually tasted success in 2024 edtion of shortest format. India lost in t?he semifinals of the 2015 World Cup to Australia and again in the 2019 World Cup to New Zealand. In 2023, India overcame the semifinal barrier ?but faltered in the final against Australia.

Looking ahead

The ODI World Cup in 2027 presents a significant opportunity for both Kohli and Rohit to end their 50-over careers on a high note. While Kohli has already tasted World Cup success, Rohit’s pursuit of an ODI World Cup victory remains unfulfilled. The upcoming tournament could potentially be their last chance to achieve this milestone and leave a lasting legacy in in??ternational cricket.

India’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka signifies the start of a new era for the team, particularly in the shortest format of the game. This tour will be the first assignment for Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. Additionally, it will mark the first match since the retirement of stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja from T20 Internationals. Suryakumar Yadav is set? to take over as the new captain, leading a fresh-faced team in the three T20I matches schedule??d.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future and the 2027 World Cup

Despite their retirement from T20Is, Rohit and Kohli will be back for the three ODIs in Sri Lanka, which came as a bit of a surprise. Their inclusion is particularly notable given the earlier rumors that they might take an extended break before India’s series of Test matches later this year. The duo’s return has sparked discussions about their potential participation in the ODI World Cup 2027, as both players have expressed a desire to continue their careers, provided they maintain their fitness and form.

Ashish Nehra on the possibility of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli playing till 2027

Former Indian cricketer Ashish Nehra weighed in on the chances of Rohit and Kohli playing until the ODI World Cup 2027. He emphasized that both p??layers possess the passion and motivation necessary to extend their careers.

“It involves both physical and mental aspects. It depends on your passion and motivation and in these aspects, there is no dearth at all when it comes to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. It’s because of their drive that they have reached where they are today. From here, young guns like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan will keep making runs and push you. For that, you need to keep raising your bar. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have done that and shown,” Nehra told Sports Tak.

Nehra acknowledged that while 2027 is a l?ong way off, the prospect of Rohit and Kohli continuing until then is exciting.

“2027 is far away at this point. But it’s great thinking. If you ask me ‘I want to be 18 all my life. I didn’t want to retire. If you give Gambhir a choice and tell him his body is fit, he will say ‘No Sai Sudharsan, I am ready’. Four years is far away, but it’s a great thought. But, if that can be done, nothing like it,” he added.

Fans’ expectations from the star duo

With Rohit and Kohli back for the ODIs, fans are eagerly anticipating strong performances from the star duo. Their presence brings a blend of experience and skill that has been instrumental in India’s success over the years.

As the team transitions under new leadership and coaching, the seasoned campaigners’ ability to perform will be crucial in maintaining India’s competitive edge. Fans are hopeful that Rohit and Kohli will continue to inspire and lead the team to new heights, both in the immediate future and potentially in the 2027 World Cup.

Two of cricket’s modern-day greats, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have etched their?? names into the annals of the sport with countless memorable performances. However, with both players now in the twilig?ht of their illustrious careers, speculation has been rife about how much longer they will continue to don the Indian jersey. As the duo has already announced their retirements from the shortest format, it would be interesting to see how much more these legends have left to offer and will they appear in the ODI World Cup 2027.

Gautam Gambhir gives update on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s future

Newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir, in his first press conference since taking over from Rahul Dravid, provided a crucial update on the future of Rohit and Virat in the Indian cricket team. Gambhir emphasized that both players have a significant?? amount of cricket left in them, particularly with key tournaments like the Champions Trophy in 2025 and a major tour of Australia in November 2024 on the horizon.

The former Indian opener also highlighted that while the decision ultimately rests with the players, their contributions are vital for the team’s success. He expressed confidence in their ability to continue performing at the highest level, given their world-class status and importance to the team.

“I think they have shown what they can deliver on the big stage, whether it’s the T20 World Cup or the 50-over World Cup as well. One thing I can be very clear of is that both those guys have a lot of cricket left in them. More importantly, with the Champions Trophy [in 2025] and a big tour of Australia [in November 2024], obviously they would be motivated enough. And then, hopefully, if they can keep their fitness, the 2027 [ODI] World Cup as well,” Gambhir remarked in the presser.

“But this is a very personal decision. I can’t say how much cricket is left in them. Ultimately, it’s up to them as well, it’s up to the players. How much can they contribute to the team’s success. Because, ultimately, it’s the team that is important. But looking at what Virat and Rohit can deliver, I think they still have a lot of cricket [left to play]. They’re still world-class players and obviously any team would want to have both of them for as long as possible,” added Gambhir.

Upcoming tour of Sri Lanka

Cricket fans will soon have the opportunity to witness the legendary batting duo in action once more during the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. This tour will not only be a chance for Rohit and Kohli to showcase their enduring skills but also an opportu?nity for the team to prepare for future challenges with their experienced campaigners leading the way.

Looking ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup

As the cricketing world looks ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup, fans remain hopeful that Rohit and Kohli will continue to be a part of the Indian squad. Their presence and experience would be invaluable assets as India will aim to reclaim cricket’s most prestigious trophy. While their future participation depends on various factors, including fitness and personal decisions, the prospect of seeing these two giants of the game in another World Cup is an exciting one for cricket enthusiasts around the globe.

India clinched their second ODI World Cup title on this day back in 2011. The night of the World Cup fi??nal saw India play against Sri Lanka and emerge victorious by six wickets.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was named Player of the Match, while Yuvraj Singh received the Player of the Tournament award. Sri Lanka batted first and set a target of 275 runs, which India chased down in 48.2 overs. Dhoni finished the match in style, hitting a six for the winning runs. This marked India’s last World Cup triumph thirteen years ago today.

Dhoni finishes off in style!

Ravi Shastri uttered his iconic line, “Dhoni finishes off in style! India lifts the World Cup after 28 years!” when Dhoni smashed a six to secure India’s victory. Notably, India’s first World Cup win came in 1983 under Kapil Dev‘s captaincy.

The 2011 final saw several players making crucial contributions. Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj, despite a shaky start to India’s batting innings, bounced back to claim two wickets each with their bowling. Gautam Gambhir displayed exceptional responsibility, building partnerships of 83 runs with Virat Kohli and 109 runs ??with Dhoni. However, he was unfo??rtunate to be dismissed just three runs short of a well-deserved century. Dhoni, on the other hand, remained unbeaten on 91 runs, sealing the victory with a final six.
