The question of who stands out as the greatest cricketer of the 21st century has long been a topic of debate among players and fans alike. With cricket evolving rapidly over the la?st two decades, the game has witnessed extraordinary players whose contributions have left an indelible mark. While the choices often vary based on personal preferences and eras, the conversation remains a fascinating one that sparks endless discussions.

Hayley Matthews picks the greatest Man’s cricketer

In a recent interaction, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews shared her picks for the greatest male and female cricketers of the 21st century. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Matthews praised several icons of the men’s game. She mentioned Sachin Tendulkar as one of the greatest cricketers and someone she admired while growing up, considering him the best during his era. Additionally, she revealed that Ricky Ponting was her? favorite player, highlighting her fondness for his style and contr?ibutions to the game.

“25 years is a really wide area. Obviously, I know a lot of them, like (Sachin) Tendulkar, the greats of the game. Certainly, when I was growing up, he was one person that was like the best. Ricky Ponting was just my favourite player,” Matthews said.

However, when asked to narrow down her pick, she went with global superstar Virat Kohli. Matthews highlighted AB de Villiers and Kohli as two standout players of modern cricket, praising De Villiers for his all-around brilliance as a batter and captain. However, sh?e ultimately picked Kohli as her favorite, a??cknowledging his status as an icon of the men’s game and citing his consistency and influence as reasons for her admiration over the past few years.

“I feel like in this day and age, two people that really stand out to me now are AB de Villiers and just how good he was all around the ground as a batter and as a captain as well and then obviously Virat (Kohli). It’s so hard to look past him as an icon within the men’s game. So I am probably going to say Virat, just because he’s been probably my favourite player for the last few years, especially,” Matthews added.

Matthews pick on the greatest Woman’s cricketer

Shifting her focus to the women’s game, Matthews was equally decisive in naming her pick for the best female cricketer of the last 25 years. She highlighted Australian legend Ellyse Perry’s in?c??redible achievements and consistency over the years.

“In the women’s game, I think it’s kind of hard to look past Ellyse Perry and just everything she’s done over all the years, probably playing from back in like 2010 and stuff as well. I’d probably say she’s the best female cricketer of the last 25 years,” Matthews added.

England‘s underwhelming performance continued as they suffered a disappointing 72-run loss to Australia in the third and final T20I at the Adelaide Oval. The defeat marked the end of a series that saw England fail to secure a single win, leaving them with a 3-0 loss in the T20I leg and a subsequent 12-0 point deficit in the Women’s Ashes 2025.

Alastair Cook highlights England’s struggle

Former England cricketer Alastair Cook did not hold back in his assessment of England’s performance. He stated that the Women’s Ashes series reflects the true current strengths of the two teams. “This series has shown the reality of where the two sid?es are,/em> Cook said on TNT ??sports.

The left-handed batter commented on England’s loss to Australia, saying it marked rock bottom, offering the opportunit?y to rebuild and improve. He noted that England lagged behind Australia by about 20% in all aspects batting, bowling and fielding.

“But the best thing about when you go down to 5-0 or a ??clean sweep is that you’re at the bottom, and the only way is up. Ultimately, England are about 20% behind Australia at ev??erything batting, bowling, fielding, athleticism, the lot,/em> he added.

Australia’s dominance

??Australia once again showcased? why they are the top-ranked team in both ODI and T20I formats.

In the final T20I, they posted a formidable 162 for 5, powered by Beth Mooney’s scintillating 94 off 63 ba?lls, featuring 10 boundaries. Mooney’s consistent performances throughout the series earned her the Play?er of the Series award, amassing an impressive 213 runs across three innings.

In response, England faltered under pressure, managing only 90 runs before being bowled out. Georgia Wareham spearheaded the Australian bowling attack, claiming? three wickets and finishing as the leading wicket-taker of the T20I series with six scalps.

Day-Night Test match left, but the series is decided

The only remaining match, a Day-Night Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, holds little weight i??n the context of the series outcome. England’s dismal performance has not only cost them the series but has also exposed areas needing significant improvement. The upcoming Test match presents an opportunity for redemption, albeit a small one, as they aim to salvage pride in a series dominated by their Australian counterparts.

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is just around the corner with the opening match scheduled between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on February 14. However, right before RCB starts their new campaign as defending champions, ace all-rounder Sophie Devine has decided to take a break from cricket.

A major blow to RCB’s hopes of defending the title

Devine was an important part of the RCB squad during the 2024 season in which she scored 136 runs and took 6 wickets in 10 matches for the franchise, thus playing an important role in RCB’s title-winning season. She is the second RCB player to pull out of the tournament even before the campaign kicks off. Earlier, Australian player Sophie Molineux’s WPL s??ea?son came to an end due to a sustained injury.

Devine’s situation, however, is different. She has decided to miss WPL 2025 and taken a break from cricket after seeking professional advice. The New Zealand Cricket Board has fully backed her decision, revealing that a player’s health is of the utmost importance ?to them.

“Player well-being is paramount to us – it takes precedence over everything else, Sophie’s had excellent support from the New Zealand Cricket Players Association and from our own high-performance unit staff, and everyone agrees this is the best option available. The most important thing for NZC is that Sophie has a decent break, receives good support and care, and is fit and well before returning to professional cricket,â€?/em> Liz Green, head of New Zealand’s high-performance development said in a statement.

Devine will miss the remainder of her Super Smash 2024-25 season where she was representing Wellington and will also miss the en??tirety of the domestic cricket season along with the WPL. The 35-year-old’s future remains uncertain as a decision about her career will be taken in due course. New Zealand Cricket has also issued a press release announcing her termination ??from the remainder of the cricketing season. Additionally, it was also revealed that NZC, Cricket Wellington and RCB have extended their support to Devine regarding her decision.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced awards for both ma??le and?? female cricketers, acknowledging their outstanding performances across all formats in 2024.

ICC Women’s T20I cricketer of the year 2024

On Saturday, the ICC announced New Zealand’s star all-rounder, Amelia Kerr, as the recipient of the prestigious Women’s T20I cricketer of the Year 2024 award. This recognition highlights her remarkable contributions in the shortest format of the game, particularly during a stellar year that included leading New Zealand to their maiden ICC Women’s T20I World Cup triumph. Kerr, who played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s historic ICC Women’s T20I World Cup victory in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), was chosen over Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu, South Africa skipper Laura Wolvaardt, and Ireland all-rounder Orla Prendergast.

Bowling masterclass: Leading the world with the ball

Kerr’s bowling performances in 2024 were nothing short of exceptional. Across 18 matches, she scalped an incredible 29 wickets at an average of 15.55, consistently delivering in crucial moments. Her standout display came against Australia in Septembe?r 2024 at MacKay, where she dismantled the formidable Australian lineup with figures of 4/20.

Her dominance carried over into the T20 World Cup, where she became the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, claiming 15 wickets at an astonishing average of 7.33 and an economy rate of just 4.85. This included another four-wicket haul against Australia in the group stage and impactful spells in New Zealand’s victories over Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the West Indies in the semi-final. Kerr’s ability to break ?partnerships and apply pressure with her accurate bowling proved instrumental in New Zeala?nd’s World Cup success.

All-round excellence: Contributions with the bat

Kerr’s contributions weren’t limited to her bowling. As a dependable all-rounder, she amassed 387 runs in T20Is during the year, averaging 24.18. Her perf?ormances with the bat were particularly crucial in high-stakes matches. During the tournament, she accumulate??d 135 runs in six matches at an average of 27, placing her among the top ten run-scorers. Her ability to rise to the occasion in pressure-filled situations underscored her immense value to the New Zealand side.

The historic T20 World Cup 2024 campaign

Kerr’s all-round brilliance was the cornerstone of New Zealand’s maiden ICC Women’s T20I? World Cup triumph. She was instrumental in their opening-round win over India, where her controlled bowling stifled the opposition. Despite a loss to Australia in the group stage, where she picked up four wickets, Kerr helped the team recover with impactful performances in subsequent matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

In the semi-final against the West Indies, Kerr once again rose to the occasion, delivering with both bat and ball to propel her team to the final. Facing South Africa in Dubai, Kerr delivered a match-winning performance in the final. Apart from her vital knock with the bat, she claimed 3/24 with the ball, dismissing key batters like captain Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch. Her efforts secured a 32-run victory for New?? Zealand, igniting celebrations in Dubai.

Amelia Kerr’s contributions did not go unnoticed as she was named Player of the Match in the World Cup final and also received the prestigious Player of the Tournament award for her all-round heroics. With her performances, she also became the second New Zealand women’s cricketer to win the ICC Women’s T20I Player of the Year award, following Suzie Bates in 2016.
