As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 unfolds, cricket enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement over the tournament’s return after an eight-year hiatus. However, notable absentees from this prestigious event are former champions Sri Lanka and the West Indies. Their absence has raised questions about the qualification process and the current state of cricket in these nations.

Qualification criteria for the Champions Trophy 2025

Champions Trophy 2025 features eight teams: Pakistan (hosts), India, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Australia, England and South Africa. The qualification for this tournament was based on the performance of teams in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. The top seven teams from that tournament, excluding the host nation Pakistan, secured their spots in the Champions Trophy. Unfortunately, both Sri Lanka and the West Indies failed to meet this criterion. It was the same case for the Netherlands, Zimbabwe and Ireland – the other missing Full Members.

Absence of Sri Lanka and West Indies: Impact on Global Cricket

The absence of Sri Lanka and West Indies from the Champions Trophy is significant not only for these teams but also for global cricket. Both nations have contributed immensely to the sport’s history and have passionate fan bases. Their absence from such a high-profile tournament diminishes its competitive edge and deprives fans of witnessing some of cricket’s most exciting players.

Looking ahead, both Sri Lanka and West Indies must focus on rebuilding their teams. For Sri Lanka, investing in youth development and enha?ncing domestic competitions could yield positive results in the long run. The West Indies need to address administrative challenges while encouraging players to prioritize national duties over lucrative T20 contracts.

While new teams like Afghanistan are making their mark on the international stage, traditional powerhouses must adapt to remain relevant. As fans enjoy this year’s tournament featuring eight competitive teams, they will undoubtedly look forward to seeing Sri Lanka and the West Indies return to prominence in future international events.

The final match of the 2-match Test series between Pakistan and West Indies had everything. History books were re-written, and the crowd witnessed an unmatched rivalry between players of the two sides. Bowlers dominated the course of the play while batters crashed like a pack of cards. Overall, West Indies outperformed Pakistan to clinch a historic Test win at the Multan Cricket Stadium at a time when odds were complet??ely against them. The visitors ended their tour to Pakistan with their ??heads held high as they crafted a stunning comeback against Pakistan after a disastrous display with the bat on the opening day of the Test.

Pakistan succumbed to the West Indies bowling onslaught

Day 3 of the second Test started with Pakistan already on back foot at 71/4 with still a mountain to climb considering the pitch had already shown significant support to spinners throughout the series. The opening session too did not bring any relief for the home side as wickets kept falling in quick succession with the spin trio of Jomel Warrican, Kevin Sinclair and Gudakesh Motie rattled the remaining Pakistani innings.

While seasoned Pakistan batter Saud Shakeel was sent back to the pavilion by Sinclair, Warrican brought an end to the resistance from Kashif Ali, Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha. After the? traditional batters were sent back to the pavilion, it was o?nly a matter of time when West Indies clinched the remaining wickets and registered a monumental Test win against Pakistan by 120 runs. This is their first Test win on Pakistani soil in a span of 34 years. The last time a Caribbean side defeated Pakistan on their home turf was during their tour to Pakistan in 1990/91 when they triumphed over the home side by 7 wickets.

A master-class from West Indies bowlers

Even though West Indies batters crashed in the first innings, they made a stunning comeback during their second innings to score 244 runs i??n 66.1 overs. With a 9-run lead over Pakistan after the end of the 1st Pakistani innings, the home team needed 253 runs to win the final Test and clinch a ??series win.

However, West Indies bowlers had some other thoughts, in absence of experienced pacer Kemar Roach, who could not bowl after a groin injury on the second day of the match, the West Indies spinners ran the show and completely dismantled the Pakistani batting order. The highest any Pakistani batter could score in front of West Indies spinners was a 31-run knock by Babar Azam.

Warrican was the most successful West Indies spinner?? who clinched 5 wickets during Pakistan’s second innings and gave away just 27 runs in his 16 over spell. Sinclair and Motie too, supported him with their impeccable performances taking 3 and 2 wickets respectively. Pakistan’s 2nd innings could only last for 43 overs as they were bowled out for 133 runs.

The defeat had a detrimental effect on Pakistan’s position in the World Test Championship (WTC) table for the current cycle. With 9 defeats in 14 matches, they finish at the bottom of the table with just 27.98 Percentage Points (PCT). The We??st Indies on the other hand, finished above Pakistan in the current WTC cycle with 8 defeats and 28.21 PCT points.

The second day of the final Test match between Pakistan and West Indies began with the visitors garnering a 9-run lead as the match was ??finely poised after Pakistan was bowled out for 154 runs on Day 1 of the Test match. What happened on the second day of the Test was nothing short of miraculous as West Indies batters put up a brave fight against Pakistan’s bowling unit.

West Indies’ batting put up a determined stand against Pakistan spinners

The West Indies batting resistance started with skipper Kraigg Brathwaite, leading the way in a remarkable display with the bat to score 52 runs off 74 balls star-studded with 4 boundaries and 2 sixes. Debutant Amir Jangoo supported th??e West Indies captain, putt?ing up a handy score of 30 runs off 52 deliveries.

The second innings of the visitors appeared to be de-railing after the two set batters were dismissed by the emphatic spin of Pakistan’s spin sensation, Noman Ali. But the tailenders put up a brilliant show against the spin onslaught, adding valuable runs on the board for the West Indies. Wicket-keeper batter Tevin Imlach scored 35 runs while Kevin Sinclair added 28 runs to the visitor’s 2nd innings.

Tailenders Gudakesh Motie and Jomel Warrican scored 18 runs each to put the West Indies in a commanding position at 244 runs. With the 9-run lead before the innings, West Indies gave the home side a total of 253 runs to win the Test match. Sajid Khan and Noman Ali shared a large portion of West Indies wickets with each spinner clinching 4 wickets for the home side. Kashif Ali and Abrar Ahmed had 1 wicket each to their name.

The horror show of Pakistani batters continue

The dreadful show of the Pakistan batters continued as the entire Pakistani top and middle order collapsed in front of the spin storm of Sinclair and Motie. While Sinclair got rid of skipper Shan Masood and Babar Azam. Muhammad Hurraira was dismissed by Motie and Kamran Ghulam was sent back to the pavilion by Jomel Warrrican after being caught in the slips by Jangoo.

At the end of the day’s play, the home side was struggling at 76 runs for 4 wickets in 24 overs. Pakistan still needs 178 runs to win the Test match with just 6 wickets in hand. Saud Shakeel and Kamran Ghulam are on the crease for Pakistan with Mohammad Rizwan yet to bat.

Wickets fell and batters crashed like a pack of cards on the 1st day of the final Test match between Pakistan and West Indies at Multan Cricket Stadium. As expected, it was a slow turning track which was visibly dry and a safe haven for spinners to dominate. West Indies won the toss and elected to bat first hoping that they?? might put some runs on the board before the pitch starts helping Pakistani spinners. However, the opposite happened for the visiting side.

A Noman Ali spin-storm

The West Indies had a dreadful start to the game after debutant Kashif Ali got rid of the opener Mikyle Louis early. The concerns aggravated after debutant Amir Jangoo too was sent back to the pavilion on a duck by Sajid Khan. The visitors had already lost 2 wickets with just 9 run????s on the board.

The situation became hopeless for the West Indies as skipper Kraigg Braithwaite was dismissed by ace Pakistani spinner Noman Ali. The spin storm from the 38-year-old continued as he took a sensational hat-trick by dismissing Justin Greaves, Tevin Imlach and Kevin Sinclair back? to the pavilion becoming the first Pakistani spinner to achieve this historic feat.

Tailenders Gudakesh Motie, Kemar Roach, and Jomel Warrican offered a stiff resistance to the spin onslaught from the home side. The three batters stabilized the West Indies innings to some extent which was once de-railed at 54 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. While Roach was dismissed on 25 runs facing 45 balls, a 10th wicket partnership of 68 runs between Motie and Warrican helped West Indi??es reach a total of 163 runs in 41.1 overs. Motie was the final wicke??t for the West Indies as he was bowled by Ali on 55 runs. Crucially, Ali took both the last remaining Caribbean wickets and completed his 6-wicket haul in the first innings.

A horror-show from the Pakistani batters

Pakistan might have hoped that they are in control of the Test match up until the end of West Indies 1st innings, but the West Indies bowling unit were up for the fight giving a tit for tat trouble to the home team’s batting line-up. Crucially, while it was largely a one-man show for Pakistani bowlers, West Indies’ combined effort cruised them back into the game as they decimated the seasoned and experienced Pakistani batting line-up.

Apart from Mohammed Rizwan and Saud Shakeel who made 49 and 32 runs for their side respectively, the entire Pakistani batting line-up succumbed to the determined bowling display from the visitor. Pacer Roach started the counter-attack for West Indies getting rid of openers Mohammad Huraira and skipper Shan Masood.

The openers?dismissals opened the floodgates of dismissals for Pakistan as the entire middle-order derailed in front of West Indies bowlers. Warrican was the star of the West Indies bowling unit taking 4 wickets, Motie and Roach ??too, did not disappoint clinching 3 and 2 wickets respectively. The entire Pakistani batting order was wrapped up on 154 runs in 47 runs. The home side even after their solid bowling display trail behind the visitors by 9 runs at the end of the day’s play.

The turning track of the Multan Cricket Stadium has done the trick for Pakistan once again. The spin duo of Noman Ali and Sajid Khan has once again dominated the West Indies batting line-up with their lethal spin bowling.

The most important part of the Pakistani spin attack, Ali has clinched a historic milestone to his ?name on the first day of the Test match, marking an important achievement in his i??ndividual career and for Test cricket in Pakistan.

Noman Ali’s spin master-class decimate West Indies

West Indies had a dreadful start to the second Test. Opener Mikyle Louis and debutant top-order batter Amir Jangoo were dismissed even before the visiting side could register 10 runs on the board. However, the real domination was yet to begin. The 38-year-old started the day by dismissing West Indies skipper Kraigg Braithwaite?? who was trying to offer some resistance in front of the spin onslaught from Pakistan.

Ali then went on to annihilate the remaining West Indies hope by sending Justin Greaves, Tevin Imlach and Kevin Sinclair back to the pavilion consecutively. While Greaves and Sinclair gave their wickets away getting caught on the second-slip by Babar Azam, Imlach was dismissed while attempting to sweep the ball, completely missi??ng the turning delivery in the process which hit his pads instead.

With these wickets, Ali has managed to achieve a remarkable milestone by becoming the Pakistani spinner to secure a hat-trick in Test cricket and 5th bowler of their country to secure the glorious feat overall. Before him, only Wasim Akram, Mohammad Sami, Abdul Razzaq and Naseem Shah have?? man??aged to secure a hat-trick in Test cricket.

Pitch remain the centre of discussion

The pitch at the Multan Cricket Stadium has witnessed unconventional turn and a conducive environment for spin bowling. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the team management were subje??cted to severe criticisms from the cricketing community considering the kind of turning track made f??or the Test series against West Indies.

Amidst growing objections from the cricketing world over deliberately making a turning track to win the Test series, Pakistan head coach Aaqib Javed entered the discussions and defended the host nations?decision of making turning pitches asserting that Pakistan would have reached the finals of World Test Championship (WTC) had this decision were taken earlier.

“The rule of test cricket is to win at home. If you win at home and you win 2-3 tests away, you become a strong candidate for the final. We played in South Africa and didn’t field a spinner there due to the conditions. Similarly, pitches in Australia and England favor pace bowlers. Every country prepares pitches according to their advantage to win matches. I don’t understand the problem with spin-friendly wickets. If pace bowlers take wickets, people say cricket is progressing, but if spinners take wickets, they say cricket is going backward. I don’t understand this,?/em> Javed said during a pre-match press conference.

Pakistan are currently leading the two-match Test series. Their? previous face-off against the West Indies ended in favour of the home side as they wo?n the match by 127 runs.

In a moment that will be etched in his memory forever, Pakistan’s debutant Kashif Ali marked his Test debut with a dream start, dismissing Mikyle Louis in his very first over. The young bowler’s maiden wicket was a vital breakthrough for Pakistan on the first day of the second Test against the West Indies at Multan Cricket Stadium.

Kashif Ali’s maiden Test wicket

The wicket came in dramatic fashion, showcasing Kashif’s composure and talent on the b??ig stage. Bowling the fifth delivery of his first over, Kashif delivered ?a length ball with a wobble seam that slightly moved away off the deck. Louis, who was on 4 runs off 10 balls, tentatively poked at the delivery, resulting in a faint edge. The ball carried low to the wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan, who dived forward to complete a sharp catch.

The dismissal of Louis gave Pakistan their first wicket of the match, and it was a special moment for the 24-year-old Kashif. Wearing Pakistan’s whites for the first time, the young pacer celebrated ??passionately, surrounded by his teammates, as the crowd at Multan erupted in cheers.

Louis, who had been looking to settle in against Pakistan’s new-ball attack, fell prey to Kashif’s skill and precision. Rizwan’s safe hands ensured the youngster’s effort did not go in vain, as Pakistan celebrated their debutant’s first success on the international stage.

After a low-scoring encounter in the first Test, Pakistan and West Indies are set to face each other for the final time in the 2-match Test series. Pakistan’s promising display with the bowl and it??s spinners?prowess enabled the home side to dominate Wes??t Indies and outperform their batting department.

In the second Test, both teams will have different objectives in mind. Pakistan will rely on their impressive spin duo of Noman Ali and Sajid Khan, aiming to complete a clean sweep of the home series and finish the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle on a high note. Meanwhile, the West Indies face the challenge of overcoming the spinning threat from Pakistan’s bowlers. Their best hope would be to secu?re a victory and draw the series.

PAK vs WI: Multan Cricket Stadium Pitch Report

The pitch at Multan is expected to heavily favor the spinners in the upcoming red-ball match, setting the stage for what could be a scintillating contest between the bat and the bowl. With a dry surface and plenty of turn, the pitch is likely to offer a tough time to the batters throughout the game, providing ideal conditions for spin bowling. While fast bowlers may find some initial assistance with the new ball, once it gets older, the pitch is expected to remain predominantly s?pin-friendly. Overal??l, both teams will need to capitalize on the conditions early in the game before the pitch becomes even more conducive to turn with cracks developing as the game progresses.
