The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sent shockwaves through the cricketing world on February 11 with its announcement of the updated  15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. While squad changes are not uncommon ahead of major tournaments, the decisions this time have left fans and experts divided. The exclusion of young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and the absence of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah due to injury have dominated the head??lines, sparking heated debates across social media platforms.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s omission: A controversial call

While Bumrah’s injury was expected to be a talking point, the exclusion of Jaiswal from the squad has taken center stage. The young opener, who recently made his ODI debut against England in Nagpur, has been dropped in favour of mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. Jaiswal’s debut was underwhelming, as he managed only 15 runs before being dismissed by Jofra Archer. In the second ODI, he was benched to accommodate Virat Kohli’s return, with Shubman Gill opening alongside Rohit Sharma.

Despite his limited ODI experience, ?Jaiswal has been in scintillating form in domes??tic cricket and other formats. His ability to play aggressive yet composed innings has earned him a reputation as one of India’s most promising young talents. His exclusion has left fans baffled, especially given his recent performances and potential to be a game-changer.

Varun Chakaravarthy: A gamble or a masterstroke?

In place of Jaiswal, the selectors have opted for Chakaravarthy, the mystery spinner who made his ODI debut in Cuttack. Chakaravarthy had an impressive T20I series, where he picked up 14 wickets, showcasing his ability to deceive batters with his variations. However, his inclusion in the ODI squad for a major tournament like the Champions Trophy has raised questions about the team?’s balance.

While Chakaravarthy’s skills are undeniable, his limited experience in the 50-over format makes his selection a gamble. The decision to prioritize a spinner over a young, dynamic opener like Jaiswal has left many wondering if the selectors? are overestimating the need for spin options in the tournament.

Fans backlash over Jaiswal’s exclusion

The announcement of the squad has triggered a massive backlash from fans, particularly on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter). The hashtag #Jaiswal began trending within hours of the squad announcement, with fans expressing their frustration and disbelief over the exclusion of the young opener. Many questioned the logic behind dro??pping a player with such immense potential, while others accused the selectors of favouritism and poor decision-making.

Fans pointed to Jaiswal’s recent performances in domestic and international cricket, arguing that ?he deserved a chance to prove himself o??n the big stage. Some even compared his situation to that of other young players who were given consistent opportunities to shine. The outrage highlights the emotional connect fans have with rising stars and their desire to see them succeed.

As the Champions Trophy 2025 approaches, the spotlight will remain on the Indian team and its controversial squad selections. While the absence of Bumrah and the exclusion of Jaiswal have raised concerns, the team still boasts a strong lineup with the likes of Rohit, Kohli, and Gill. The onus will now be on the players to silence the critics and deliver a stellar perfor?mance in the tournament.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, initially included in India’s provisional squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, has been dropped from the final 15-man squad, with spinner Varun Chakravarthy taking his place.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the change, also announcing that Jasprit Bum??rah would miss the tournament due to a lower back in??jury, with Harshit Rana named as his replacement.

Reason behind dropping Yashasvi Jaiswal

Despite a strong List A record with 1526 runs in 33 games at an average of 52.62, Jaiswal’s ODI performance has not matched his success in Test and T20I formats. He made his ODI debut in the first match of the series against England but could not stand on the expectations and therefore, wasn’t given another chance. This lack of impactful performance in the 50-over format is a significant factor in the selectors’ decision.

However, the primary reason for Jaiswal’s exclusion is the established opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Both are in great form, and selectors decided to stick with them. Jaiswal’s inclusion would have meant disrupting this settled partnership.

Recently, cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra mentioned on his Youtube channel that Jaiswal might not be required, especially with India’s desire to maintain a left-right combination.

The batting order is looking set. Rohit has started scoring runs. Shubman Gill is our vice-captain, and he is in good form. Virat Kohli will eventually return to form. Even if he doesn’t, god forbid, India are not going to drop him. Shreyas Iyer is at No. 4. At No. 5, whether it’s KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, or Axar Patel, the slot is settled. One of the two—Rahul and Pant—will have to be left out. And then you have an extra batter,” Chopra said.

“You might not require Yashasvi Jaiswal. That’s a possibility. You wanted to maintain a left-right, left-right combination in the batting order. Now, you won’t be able to do it. You have played your hand, and that has backfired,” he added.

Spin-heavy India squad

Selectors opted for a spin-heavy squad, leading to the inclusion of  Chakravarthy. The 33-year-old mystery spinner, who also debuted in the ODI series against England, provided an x-factor as a wicket-taking option, which the team needed with Bumrah’s absence.

Bumrah had bee??n unde?r observation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, but failed to recover in time.

With a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, Rohit Sharma-led Team India is taking on Jos Buttler’s England in the second ODI at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on February 9. As the two captains walked out for the toss, Buttler once again emerged victorious and opted to bat first. The hosts put up a clinical performance in Nagpur, winning the opening match by four wickets, courtesy of an? all-round effort from the batting and bowling units. Meanwhile, England, despite showing glimpses of promise in the first game, fell short and now faces a must-win situation to keep the series alive

Reason behind Kuldeep Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal

India have tweaked its lineup, with Virat Kohli making a return to the playing XI in place of Yashasvi Jaiswal, while Varun Chakravarthy replaces Kuldeep Yadav, who has been rested. Kohli’s comeback adds immense experience to India’s top order, while Chakravart??hy’s inclusion provides a fres??h spin option on what is expected to be a slow, black soil pitch in Cuttack. With both teams making tactical changes, the battle between bat and ball promises to be an intriguing one.

Indian skipper Rohit expressed confidence in his team’s performance after the opening match, emphasizing the energy and posi??tive intent shown by the players. He specifically lauded Shreyas Iyer’s aggressive approach, which was instrumental in steadying the innings after early setbacks. Shubman Gill and Axar Patel’s crucial contributions in the middle order further showcased India’s depth an??d adaptability in run chases.

“I am happy with India’s performance in the last game, but shifts focus to this one pretty quickly. I loved the energy of his team in the field despite some of the long-format players not being active recently. Shreyas and Shubman’s counterattack in the first ODI was superb to watch. Shreyas prides himself on that and that is how he wants to play and that helps the team. Looks a typical Indian pitch to me, it’s a black soil surface, and it will get slower and slower (and lower too). Two changes, Jaiswal misses out in place of Virat. Kuldeep rested, Varun debuts,” Rohit said.

England’s strategy: Aiming for redemption and series revival

Meanwhile, Buttler’s decision reflected a strategic shift after their struggles in the first ODI, where batting second proved difficult against India’s disciplined bowling attack. The England skipper has made three major changes to the playing XI, bringing in Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson, and Jamie Overton to strengthen the pace department. Wood’s express pace, combi?ned with Atkinson’s accuracy and Overton’s ability to extract bounce, is expected to add much-needed firepower to England’s bowling attack.

The highly anticipated three-match ODI series between India and England kicked off at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium in Nagpur. England won the toss and opted to bat first, aiming to capitalize on the good batting conditions. With both teams looking to start strong, the visitors got off to a ?steady start before India made a stunning comeback with some brilliant fielding and disciplined bowling.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s spectacular catch gets rid of Ben Duckett

One of the most breathtaking moments of the match came in the 10th over of England’s innings when Yashasvi Jaiswal pulled off a spectacular catch to send Ben Duckett back to the pavilion.

On the third ball of Harshit Rana’s over, Duckett attempted a? pull shot off a short-of-length delivery. However, the ball bounced more than expected, taking the top edge of his bat and soaring high in the ??air. With the ball hanging for what felt like an eternity, Jaiswal had a tough task ahead.

Positioned at mid-wicket, Jaiswal sprinted backward, keeping his eyes locked on the ball while also glancing?? over his shoulders to track its trajectory. Maintaining his balance at full speed, he time??d his dive to perfection, stretching both hands forward to pluck the ball out of thin air. His acrobatic effort left the crowd in awe and turned the tide in India’s favor.

England’s strong start before India’s counterattack

Before Jaiswal’s brilliance in the field, England seemed to be in a commanding position. Their openers, Duckett and Phil Salt, provided a solid start, adding 75 runs for the first wicket. The duo looked confident and was building a strong platform for a big total. However, India struck back out of nowhere. Shreyas Iyer produced a moment of magic with a brilliant run out to dismiss Salt for a well-made 43, shifting the momentum in India’s favor.

The pressure mounted on England, and soon after, Rana bowled a brilliant over that completely rattled the visitors. First, Rana got the breakthrough by dismissing Duckett, courtesy of Jaiswal’s stunning catch. Then, just three balls later, he sent Harry Brook packi?ng for a three-ball duck, putting England in d?eep trouble.

In a significant endorsement of emerging cricket talent, former England captains Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton have identified Yashasvi Jaiswal and Saim Ayub as part of the next generation’s “Fab 4.” This selection highlights the promising futures of these young cricketers, who are poised to make substantial impacts on the international stage.

The emergence of Fab 4

During a discussion on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, Hussain and Atherton shared their insights on the players they believe will shape the future of cricket following the era of legends like Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root and Kane Williamson. Alongside Jaiswal and Ayub, they also mentioned England’s rising star Harry Brook, emphasizing that these players possess the skills and temperament neces??sary?? to succeed at the highest levels.

“Saim Ayub’s just had this injury and it is not sure whether he will be fit for the Champions Trophy, but he could be a dynamic player at the top of the order for Pakistan across all formats,” said Hussain after picking up Jaiswal and Brook.

Hussain named Australia’s Travis Head as his final pick, but Atherton argued that the 31-year-old did not meet the criteria due to his age. Atherton eventually included Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis and New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, alongside Jaiswal and Brook, as his picks for the new ‘Fab 4’.

The heat of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 was palpable on the field at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) as young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal engaged in a spirited exchange of words with Australia’s Sam Konstas during the second day of the fifth Test.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s fiery sledging incident with Sam Konstas

The incident unfolded when Konstas, who had been a thorn in India’s side with his aggressive batting and chirping in the field, found himself at the receiving end of Jaiswal’s sledging. As Konstas struggled to find the boundary, Jaiswal was heard taunting him, saying, “Kya ho gaya, ab shots nahi dikh rahe kya? Oye Konstas, shot nahi lag rahe kya abhi?” which translates to, “What happened, are you not playing any shots now? Hey Konstas, can’t you hit a shot anymore?” Thi?s moment was captured on video and quickly circulated across social media platforms, highlighting the competitive spirit and the traditional sledging cultu?re of cricket between India and Australia.

Mental warfare: Konstas’ antics and Jaiswal’s resilience

This verbal joust came at a time when both players were trying to assert dominance in the match. Konstas had previously made headlines with his fearless approach, both with the bat and his antics on the field, often getting under the skin of the Indian players. Jaiswal, on the other hand, had been a consistent performer for India in this series, showing r?esilience and adaptability in his batting. The sledging was not just banter but a reflection of the mental warfare that is often part of cricket, especially in a high-stakes series like the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Impact on the game

While sledging is a part of cricket’s theatre, this incident seemed to have repercussions on the field. Konstas was dismissed soon after, caught by Jaiswal himself at gully, which added a layer of irony to the episode. Jaiswal’s words appeared to have had the intended effect, perhaps unsettling Konstas or at least serving as a morale booster for Jaiswal and his team.

Yashasvi Jaiswal unleashed a breathtaking display of aggressive batting on Day 2 of the fifth Test in Sydney, setting the perfect tone for India’s second innings. With a slender four-run lead after the first innings, the pressure was palpable, but Jaiswal turned the tide with a fearless assault on Mitchell Starc in the very first over. Smashing 16 runs off six deliveries, the young left-hander executed a series of masterful strokes, le??aving the Australian bowlers reeling and t?he spectators electrified.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s scintillating start against Michell Starc

Jaiswal began the over with caution, leaving Starc’s opening delivery. However, what followed was nothing short of a batting exhibition. A short and wide ball outside off-stump was cut over backward point with precision, marking the start of his fireworks. Starc persisted with width, and Jaiswal punished him again with consecutive cuts past deep point for boundaries. On the final ball of the over, Jaiswal showcased his elegance, driving a full-length delivery through the covers with a perfectly timed stroke. Hi?s blazing start not only set the tone for India’s innings but also sent a clear message to the Australian camp about India’s intent to dominate.

A series to remember: Jaiswal’s consistent brilliance

Jaiswal’s ??sparkling knock in Sydney is the latest chapter in what has been a breakout series for the 23-year-old. Emerging as India’s leading run-scorer, Jaiswal has accumulated 369 runs at an impressive average of 46.13. His innings have featured a century and two half-centuries, highlighting his ability to adapt to different match situations and conditions. Throughout the series, Jaiswal has displayed a rare combination of composure and aggression??, consistently putting the opposition bowlers on the back foot. His counter-attacking approach, particularly against Australia’s fiery pace attack, has been a hallmark of his performances, making him a standout player in the BGT.

Indian bowlers decimate Australia’s line-up

India’s bowlers were instrumental in laying the foundation for the team’s dominant position, delivering a relentless performance to skittle Australia out for a modest 181. Resuming at an uncertain 9/1, Australia struggled to find any rhythm against India’s disciplined attack. Jasprit Bumrah set the tone early, dismissing Marnus Labuschagne for just 2 runs with a sharp delivery that found the edge. Mohammed Siraj soon joined the fray, accounting for Sam Konsta??s, who fe??ll for 22 after a promising start.

Australia’s middle order, featuring Travis Head and Steve Smith, tried to steady the innings but found little success. Head’s struggles against India continued as he was dismissed for 4, while Smith managed a fighting 33 before being undone by Bumrah’s brilliance. Alex Carey and Beau Webster provided brief resistance with a 41-run partnership, but their efforts were short-lived. Prasidh Krishna ended Carey’s vigil, and Nitish Kumar Reddy struck twice in quick succession, removing Pat Cummins and Starc. Siraj delivered the final blow, cleaning up Scott Boland to close Australia’s innings and leave India with a crucial adv??antage.

In the high-stakes environment of Test cricket, where every run counts and every moment is scrutinized, the recent encounter between India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and Australia’s Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) has emerged as a memorable highlight. The match not only showca?sed the talent of these young cricketers but also brought to light the age-old tradition of sledging that often adds spice to the game.

The sledging saga of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sam Konstas

The drama began when Jaiswal, who was batting resiliently, faced relentless sledging from Konstas, a 19-year-old debutant fielding at silly point. As Jaiswal prepared to face Nathan Lyon’s bowling, Konstas’s continuous chatter became too much for him. In a moment captured by stump microphones, Jaiswal snapped back with a sharp ?em>Do your job!?directed at Konstas. This exchange highlighted the intensi??ty of competition as both players sought to as??sert their presence on the field.

The situation escalated dramatically when Jaiswal, perhaps fueled by frustration, hit a powerful shot that struck Konstas directly in the body. This incident not only illustrated Jaiswal’s skill but also served as a physical manifestation of his irritation towards the ongoing banter. While such exchanges are common in cricket, this particular incident added an extra layer of excitement to an already thrilling match.

Jaiswal’s grit amidst provocation

Despite the distractions posed by Konstas’s sledging, Jaiswal remained focused and delivered an impressive performance, scoring 84 runs off 208 balls. His innings was characterized by patience and determination, showcasing his ability to withstand pressure while facing one of the world’s toughest bowling attacks. The young Indian opener’s resilience was a beacon of hope for his team as they battled against Australia’s formidable lineup.
