Former Australian captain Tim Paine recently ??revealed that he used to get annoyed when people advised him against sledging Indian batting superstar Virat Kohli during matches. Paine, who led Australia against India in the 2018-19 series, said he believed sledging could potentially distract Kohli and cause him to make mistakes, even if it didn’t prevent him from scoring runs.

Annoyed Tim Paine

People used to say, don’t sledge Virat. If you don’t sledge Virat… most of the time still get runs, so it doesn’t really matter whether you’re talking to him or not,” Paine told CricTracker.

However, he maintained that he wouldn’t try to fire up Kohli too much but instead aim to distract him. As if he could get a bit of a distraction, Kohli might play a rash shot or lose his concentration.

I wouldn’t try too much to fire up Virat, but I would try and distract him if I could because if you can get a bit of a distraction, he might play a bad shot or lose his concentration. But it used to annoy me when people say, oh, don’t sledge him, because people don’t get better because someone’s talking to them,” Paine added.

He argued that while Kohli may still score runs regardless of whether he is sledged, the act of sledging can still unsettle him?? and potentially lead to a lapse in con??centration.

Battle of banters

The verbal battle between Paine and Kohli came to a head during India’s tour of Australia in 2018-19, when Kohli led his team to their first-ever Test series win in Australia. In an Amazon documentary titled “The Test”

Paine described the incident, saying, “I was just sitting and watching him and he gave few of our guys send-offs. The plan was not to talk to him when he was batting.”

Paine went on to say that when Australia was batting, he felt it was up to each player whether they wanted to engage i??n sledging. He admitted that he had enough and wanted to stand up for himself and? his teammates, leading him to confront Kohli.

“He was trying to upset me with the part-time captain and I sort of went the opposite with him. I was sort of telling him how good he was and that he was the greatest player ever. You don’t want to get right into a fight with him because that’s what he likes. I was just trying to poke him a little bit and see if I could get him to implode a little bit.” Paine recalled.

Despite Paine’s attempts to unsettle Kohli, the Indian star went on to score a century in the Perth Test. However, Paine maintained that his approach was still valid. He believed t??hat even if Kohli continued to score runs, the act of sledging could still have a psychological impact and potentially lead to a la?pse in concentration.

Ex-Australia Test skipper Tim Paine has vehemently rebuked England Test captain Ben Stokes for his assert??ions in the Ashes 2023 documentary. Paine issued a stark reminder to the England squad, calling them a ??subpar Test side and emphasizing their need to confront that fact.

Ben Stokes’ address in the documentary

In the documentary released by the ECB, Stokes asserted that his Test team would be eternally remembered by those lucky enough to witness their play. The ECB shared a segment of Stokes’ address delivered in the locker room before the 5th Test match at Old Trafford, Manchester.

“Everything we’ve done up until now isn’t going to stop because we haven’t managed to win the urn back. The reward for our work isn’t what we get, but what we become. And what we have managed to do is, we’ve managed to become a sports team that will live forever in the memory of people who were lucky enough to witness us play cricket,” Stokes told his teammates in the dressing room.

Tim Paine slams Stokes’ remarks

Paine found Stokes’ remarks to be peculiar and out of touch, especially given that the series concluded in a 2-2 draw, allowing Australia to retain the urn. He noted that under Stokes’ and coach Brendon McCullum‘s guidance, England’s Test team is currently ranked ninth in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and missed qualifying for the f??ina?l in the previous WTC edition.

“I think it was taken slightly out of context because he was talking in a changing room and it was a bigger speech, so I will say that. However, it’s just this continued belief that they’re completely changing the game and they’re doing this amazing stuff and everyone’s going to remember it but they’re not,” Paine told on SEN Tassie Breakfast.

Paine’s harsh assessment of England

Paine further criticized the English side, highlighting their poor performance in the ongoing WTC, where they are ranked last. He argued that the team’s belief in their own uniqueness and lasting impact is unfounded, as their achievements are not remarkable or memorable. Paine bluntly stated that, in reality, England are an ordinary or even below-average team, urging them to acknowledge and accept their current status rather than overestimating their influence in the cricket world.

“You’re coming dead last in the World Test Championship. You’re not going to be a team that everyone remembers watching and you’re not doing anything outrageously good that we haven’t seen before. You’re an average cricket team. (Actually) you’re at the moment, a below-average cricket team and I think they need to get their head around that a little bit,” Paine added.

The ninth edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will run from June 1 to June 29, and the 2024 champions will be crowned at the Kensington Oval Stadium in Bridgetown, Barbados. England will try to defend their crown and lift the trophy for a record third time. However, they will face stiff competition from 19 other teams, including former champions and new challengers eager to make their mark on the tourname?nt.

Australia’s strong bowling

Australia are considered one of the prime contenders for the title, largely due to their formidable bowling attack. Their squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup boasts three experienced and highly skilled pacers: Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, along with the exceptional leg-spinner Adam Zampa. This combination of bowlers offers a blend of pace, precision, and spin, making Austra??lia a daunting opponent.

Tim Paine’s insights on Australian attack for T20 World Cup 2024

On ESPN Australia’s “Around the Wicket” show, former Test skipper Tim Paine discussed how Australia should strategize for the World Cup. Paine advocated for his Tasmania teammate Nathan Ellis, emphasizing the variety Ellis brings to the Australian pace attack. According to Paine, Ellis should be one of the first names on Australia’s team sheet due to his effective variations and impressive record in T20 cricket.

Paine suggested a bowling lineup featuring Starc, Ellis and leg-spinner Zampa. He then proposed choosing between the star pacers Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins to complete the attack. Paine highlighted Ellis’s 24 wickets in 14 games as evidence of his suitability for the T20 format, particularly with the tournament being played in diverse conditions in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA).

“I am picking Mitchell Starc. He is my No.1 out-and-out quick. Obviously Adam Zampa. I am going to decide one between Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins. I am going to pick one of them. Its not to say that they aren’t outstanding bowlers. They are. But Ellis complements the rest of the attack really well,” Paine said.

“He would be my third quick. I just think he complements the other guys really well. He has got a different skillset, comes from a different angle and height, I think some variety is going to be really important in winning this World Cup. His international record for the opportunities that have been given is outstanding,” Paine concluded.

Australia’s recent success

Australia have enjoyed a stellar run in the past year, clinching both the World Test Championship (WTC) title and the ODI World Cup 2023 Trophy. They will be looking to add ??another t?rophy to their cabinet with a strong performance in the T20 World Cup. Australia are placed in Group B alongside strong teams like England, and they will begin their campaign against Oman on June 6.

The England tour of India 2024 promised a captivating clash between two cricketing giants, igniting discussions and debates among fans, experts, and players alike. With bold statements, heated arguments, and the age-old debate of whether the bazaball approach can conquer all conditions, the series lived up to its ??hype.

However, despite England’s high hopes, India dominated the show, showcasing their prowess in the game. As the series heads towards a possible 4-1 finish in favour of India, former Australian captain Tim Paine has added a controversial twist with his recent comments on the English team and their skipper Ben Stokes.

The ‘India B’ team jibe by Brad Haddin

In a discussion comparing Australia’s defeat to India in the Border-Gavaskar 2020-21 series under his captaincy to England’s ongoing series in India with Brad Haddin on Around the Wicket ?podcast, Paine took a?? bold stance.

The discussion started with Haddin highlighting the absence of key players like Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, KL Rahul, and the recovering Rishabh Pant in the Indian squad?, suggesting that England has been playing? against a weakened Indian side.

“But they have been playing against the Indian B team because there has been no Kohli, no Shami, Bumrah got rested last Test, KL Rahul is out and Rishabh Pant is stil??l making his way back from that accident,/em> said Haddin.

Tim Paine’s controversial remark

Responding to Haddin’s remark, Pain??e decided to take a brutal dig at the English team and their captain Stokes, as ??he confessed that he loves watching England lose.

“I know what it’s like to be beaten ?by an Indian B team. Unfortunately, it happened to us on our home soil. But yes, some huge names out for India, which should have certainly helped the English. I thoroughly enjoy watching England play the game, I love the way they are going about it. I love watching them lose. Don’t get me wrong but they are entertaining and exciting,/em> Paine responded with a touch of sarcasm.

Paine’s controversial remarks have added spice to an already thrilling series and debates surrounding England’s bazball approach, creating a buzz among cricket enthusiasts worldwide. While the veteran cricketer’s comments may be viewed as a playful jab at England’s playing style, it further intensifies the rivalry between Australia and England.

India’s dominance in Dharamsala

As the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala unfolded, India showcased their dominance, firmly taking control of the match. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill displayed their batting prowess on Day 2 after a stellar performance from b?owlers on Day 1. Both Rohit and Gill scored brilliant centuries, propelling India beyond the 400-run mark as the Indian side stood at 473/8, enjoying a commanding lead of 255 runs over the visitors by the end of the day’s play.

With the 2023 ODI World Cup looming on the horizon, Australia finds itself grappling with a significant conundrum, and at the center of it is David Warner, their seasoned opening batter. Warner, who missed the majority of the three-match ODI series against India due to an injury sustained earlier in the year during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2023 , had just ?one outing in the 50-over format in 2023. In that appearance, he was slotted in at No. 4, where he managed t??o score 23 runs off 31 deliveries.

During the same series against India, Mitchell Marsh was elevated to the top of the batting order and responded with a s??tellar performance, earning him the Player of the Series accolade. His contributions of 81, 66 and 47 were pivotal in Australia clinching the series 2-1 in the subcontinent.

Tim Paine addresses speculation surrounding David Warner’s role

Now, Tim Paine, the former Australia captain, has disclosed that there have been speculations within the team management about the possibility of utilizing Warner as a number four batter in the upcoming global showpiece event, set to kick off on October 5 in India.  In the previous ODI series against India earlier this year, Warner batted at number four while Travis Head partnered with ?Mitchell as the opening pair. Paine anticipates that a similar approach might be considered this time around as Australia pr?epares for the marquee tournament.

In an inte??rview with Sen Cricket, Paine shared tha?t he has heard discussions regarding Warner potentially occupying the fourth batting position during the World Cup.

“Now that?’s somethi?ng I have heard,/em> Paine said.

Paine also expressed his endorsement of the concept of Warner batting at No. 4, as he believes it would grant the likes of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head the freedom to launch aggressive assaults at the top of the batting order. The 38-year-old views Warner as a vital anchor in the middle orde?r, particularly given his adeptness in handling spin bowling.

“It’s going to be imperative to get off to really fast starts and right now, Travis Head and Mitch Marsh are our most explosive players. I think Warner can come in at No. 4. He’s a good player of spin, he’s fast between the wickets, he’s also got power and can control the innings. So I like having him in the middle order in those conditions. And I have heard that from a few people, that it’s certainly been talked about,” the Hobart-born cricketer concluded.

Notably, Australia is scheduled to kickstart their World Cup campaign on October 8, facing India at the MA Chidambaram Stadi??um in Chennai.

The Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 is set to welcome back a familiar face as former Australia Test captain Tim Paine embraces a new chapter in his cricketing journey. Hailing from Tasmania, Paine brings with him a rich history of cricketing excellence. Having led Australia in 23 out of his 35 Test matches, Paine’s leadership prowess is renowned. His affiliation with the BBL is equally impressive, having represented the Hobart Hurricanes in 44 matches and captained the side on 25 occasions.

A Welcome Addition to the Coaching Staff

Jason Gillespie, the esteemed former Australian fast bowler and the current coach of the Adelaide Strikers, views Paine’s transition from player to coach as a strategic advantage for the team. Gillespie’s optimism stems from the belief that Paine’s involvement will significantly benefit the franchise.

Gillespie stated, “Tim has all the skills to be a fantastic coach. The experience he will bring is sure to help our players in all facets of the game and bring more positive elements to the way we play.” His sentiments were?? conveyed in an official state??ment released on Friday.

A Promising Outlook

With his recent retirement from first-class cricket after the previous season, Paine is well-positioned to channel his insights and experiences towards bolstering the Adelaide Strikers’ prospects. His multifaceted abilities are poised to instill a renewed vigor and dynamism in the team’s approach.

Coaching Beyond the Strikers

Paine’s impact is not confined to the Adelaide Strikers alone. Voges, who has excelled as a coach for Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers, is poised to guide Paine through this ?new phase of his coaching journey.

An Impressive BBL Record

Paine’s return to the BBL as a coach marks a significant transition that could potentially reshape the fortunes of the Adelaide Strikers. His vast cricketing knowledge and leadership acumen are poised to leave a lasting imprint on the team’s dynamics and performance.

The ongoing Ashes 2023 series has been marred by a controversial stumping inci?dent, resulting in a heated exchange between the England an??d Australia cricket teams.

The incident occurred on the final day of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s. In 52nd over of the England’s second innings, Jonny Bairstow walked out of his crease immediately after leaving a final delivery from Cameron Green, assuming it to be the end of the over. Meanwhile, Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey quickly reacted, dislodging the bails and catching Ba??irstow out of his cre??ase. As per the rules, the dismissal stood tall since the ball was not considered ‘dead,’ forcing the Bradford-born to make his way back to the pavilion after scoring just 10 runs.

The incident triggered a war of words between the two teams, with the England camp vehemently criticizing Australia for what they saw as unsporting behavior. They questioned the sportsmanship spirit of the Australian team, wh?ile the visitors defended their actions by pointing to the rules and regulations of ??the game.

On July 6, former Aussie player, Tim Paine re-shared a vi?deo on his Twitter account featuring Bairstow during his time with Yorkshire in 2014. In the clip, Bairstow? executed a cheeky stumping by removing the bails as the opposition batter momentarily lifted his back leg after leaving the ball alone.

In the video, the 33-year-old in a post-match interview can be seen defending the act done by him. Bairstow stated that it is a matter of l?uck, no gloveman ca??n practice this, and it is within the rules of the game.

“It’s just luck of the draw. It’s just something that we can’t really practice and just one of those that goes your way. Delighted to have got that one. It’s just one of those things. It’s within the rules of the game and that’s how it is,” the English wicketkeeper had said in ??the interview.

Earlier, Paine, the former Australian captain, expressed his criticism of the England camp regarding their strong reactions to Bairstow’s stumping. The Hobart-born accused the hosts of hypocrisy during an interaction on SEN Breakfast, where he was questioned about the controversy surrounding the incident.

“Expected from them, to be honest. It’s funny cricket. I have heard a few people talk about it last few weeks and everyone is guilty of it in cricket, everyone likes to use the spirit of cricket as a defense when something doesn’t go your way,” The former Australian red-ball captain said?? to SEN Breakfas??t

“The simple answer is just to play within the laws of the game, isn’t it, and let the umpires do their jobs. Pretty predictable. A lot of hypocrisy, that’s for sure, coming out of the English,” the 38-year-old further added.

Despite the off-field verbal spats, the focus now shifts to the on-field action as the third Test at Headingley is set to commence. Th??e match, scheduled for July 6, promises an intense battle between the two teams, with both England and Australia eager to claim victory and gain an upper hand in? the Ashes series.

Former Australia Test and ODI captain Tim Paine has finally retired from all forms of cricket. The wicketk??eeper-batter last featured in a Sheffield Shield game at Hobart on Friday, ?March 17.

Paine scored 42 (62) for Tasmania in the first innings of the match and was unbeaten for 3 in the second innings. This brought an end to Paine’s first-class career after 95 Sheffield Shield games since his debut in 2005.

The 38-year-old holds the record for the most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in first-cl??ass cricket for Tasmania, with 295 dismissals.

Paine made his Test debut for Australia in 2010 against Pakistan and took over as captain in 2018 after the Cape Town sandpapergate scandal, replacing Steve Smith. He led Australia in 23 out of the 35 Tests he played for the country.? Notably, Paine was the captain of the Australian Test team when India won their maiden Test series in 2018-19 and when India breached the Gabba fortress in 2020-21, completing a second successive series win.

Paine resigned as captain of the Australian Test team just a week before the Ashe??s series in 2021, where he was set to lead Australia. This decision came after allegations of sexting became public, and the right-hander pulled out of the series.

He did not receive a Cr??icket Australia contract? in 2022.

So now, Tim may have called it a day on his professional career, his wife Bonnie Maggs has revealed that her husband will have plent??y of dad duties to keep him busy.

In her Instagram post, Bonnie wrote: “That’s a wrap!! Proud of you, legend #finallyretired.” (Don’t mind Charlie, long week at school for the little fella) with a teasing smiley.

Tim and Bonnie, a registered nurse, are blessed w?ith two children together, daughter Milla a??nd son Charlie.

Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine is set to miss the start of the upcoming Ashes 2021-22 after opting for an indefinite break from all forms of cricket for the ‘foreseeable future’. Paine’s decision to take a mental health break comes just a week after he stepped down as captain of the Te??st team following a texting scandal.

The former Australian Test skipper was supposed to play for Tasmania‘s Marsh Cup game on Friday before joining the national Test squad in Brisbane. However, the West Australian withdrew from the match and informed Cricket Tasmania regarding his decision.

“Following discussions over the last 24 hours, Tim Paine has advised Cricket Tasmania that he will be taking a leave of absence from all forms of cricket for the foreseeable future. Cricket Tasmania will continue to support Tim and his family both professionally and personally over the summer,” Cricket Tasmania said in a statement on Friday.

Cricket Australia also made it clear that they will offer full support to Paine, and?? they respect his decision to have a break at this time to focus on his well? being.

“We recognise that this is an incredibly difficult time for Tim and his family and are committed to supporting them. We respect and understand Tim’s decision to have a break at this time to focus on his and his family’s well-being,” said Nick Hockley, Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer.

Paine’s sudden withdrawal ahead of the Ashes opener at Gabba means a likely Test debut for either Alex Carey or Josh Inglis. Although Hockley didn’t say anything regarding that, mentioning the panel will meet in the coming days to decide the final squad prior to the first Test.

“The National Selection Panel will meet in the coming days to discuss the final squad ahead of the first Ashes Test,” Hockley added.
