South Africa’s cricket captain, Temba Bavuma, has stirred debate by declaring the ICC Champions Trophy a greater challenge than the 50-o??ver World Cup.

Temba Bavuma explains why Champions Trophy is difficult than World Cup

Bavuma highlighted that the Champions Trophy’s format, with its limited number of matches, makes it difficult for teams to recover from a poor start.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to commence? across Pakistan and Dubai on February 19, with South Africa facing Afghanistan in their opening match in Karachi on February 21.

“In the World Cup, you have time to take stock and step up. But in the Champions Trophy you can’t do that but we are hopeful of going one step further in the tournament.” He added, “Obviously, we have our sights on where we want to be in the Champions Trophy this time but the format makes it more challenging for teams when you look at the 50-over World Cup.”

Bavuma explained tha??t in the Champions Trophy, teams must perform from the outset, as there is little margin for erro?r. He noted that the World Cup provides teams with more opportunities to assess conditions and build momentum due to the nine group stage matches before the knockouts.

South Africa, having been losing finalists in the T20 World Cup 2024 and finalists in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC), are currently participa??ting in a Tri-Series with Pakistan and New Zealand. However, several key players are yet to join the squad after the recently-concluded SA20 2025.

Bavuma confident of South Africa’s bowling resources for CT 2025

Bavuma sees the absence of key players as an opportunity for new talent to emerge. He stated, “It is a lovely opportunity for a couple of guys who have been doing well in domestic cricket and in T20 leagues to make a statement on what value they can add to the team.” He also expressed confidence in spinners Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Sham??si.

“Maharaj and Shamsi will give us a lot of help as we are presently tight for spin resources for the tri-series,” the 34-year-old said.

Despite Anrich Nortje’s absence, Bavuma is confident in the team’s bowling resources, backing the available resources to come good in the upcoming ICC tournament.

“We have bowlers who can bowl at high pace with the new ball and also get some shape,” Bavuma added further.

South Africa’s squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy:

Temba Bavuma (c), C??orbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, K?eshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs, and Rassie van der Dussen.

South Africa produced a commanding batting performance on Day 1 of the second Test against Pakistan at Newlands, finishing with an imposing 316/4. The innings was defined by exceptional centuries from Ryan Rickelton and skipper Temba Bavuma, who turned the tide after a shaky start. Their monumental 235-run fourt??h-wicket partnership anchored the team, showcasing grit, skill, and a clear intent to dictate terms against a largely ineffective Pakistan bowling attack.

Ryan Rickelton’s career-best knock: A masterclass in patience and precision

Rickelton’s unbeaten 176 was the cornerstone of South Africa’s innings, as the left-hander showcased a blend of technical mastery and calculated aggression. Elevated to the opening position in the absence of Tony de Zorzi, Rickelton seized the opportunity with remarkable composure. His innings, spanning 232 deliveries, was adorned with 21 exquisite? boundaries? and a towering six, highlighting his ability to find gaps with precision and punish loose deliveries effectively.

Rickelton began cautiously, assessing the conditions and nullifying the initial movement from Pakistan’s seamers. As the day progressed, he shifted gears, capitalizing on the flat, dry pitch that off?ered little assistance to the bowlers. His century, brought up with a trademark whip to the fine-leg boundary, epitomized hi??s growing confidence and control at the crease. This was only Rickelton’s second Test century, but it signaled his arrival as a dependable force in South Africa’s top order.

Temba Bavuma’s captain’s inning: Leading from the front

Bavuma’s 106 was a testament to his resilience and leadership under pressure. Walking in at a precarious 72/3, Bavuma had the dual respo?nsibility of stabilizing the innings and ensuring his team capitalized on the favorable batting conditions. His innings, spanning 179 deliveries, was an elegant mix of defensive solidity and controlled aggression, punctuated by nine boundaries and two effortless sixes.

Bavuma’s approach was methodical, as he worked the ball into gaps and rotated the strike efficiently to complement Rickelton’s attacking flair. His ability to absorb pressure and ??shift momentum became evident during the post-lunch session, where the duo added 112 runs. Bavuma reached his century with a single to midwicket, an emotional milestone considering the scrutiny surrounding his form. Although his innings ended 15 minutes before stumps, his contribution had already laid the foun??dation for a commanding South African total.

Early setbacks expose South Africa’s fragility

The day did not begin smoothly for South Africa, as their top order faltered in the face of disciplined bowling by Pakistan. Aiden Markram, often the team’s lynchpin, looked uncertain during his brief stay and fell for 17 after edging Khurram Shahzad to the wicketkeeper. Wiaan Mulder (5) and Tristan Stubbs (0) followed soon after, succumbing to Mohammad Abbas and Salman Ali Agha, respectively, in quick succession. At 72/3, South Africa found themsel??ves in a precarious position, teetering on the edge of wasting the advantage of batting first on a surface tailor-made for run-scoring. However, Rickelton and? Bavuma’s partnership injected stability into the innings, as they blunted the Pakistan attack and began to rebuild methodically.

Pakistan’s bowling: A tale of missed opportunities

Pakistan’s bowlers started the day brightly, with Shahzad and Abbas exploiting the early movement to create chances. However, their inability to sustain pressure after the initial breakthroughs proved costly. The attack, featuring four frontline seamers and occasional spin, lacked consistency and failed to adapt as the pitch flattened out. The dismissal of Bavuma late in the day provided some relief, but the bowling unit largely struggled to pose any significant threat. Compounding their woes was the loss of Saim Ayub, one of their key fielders, who twisted his ankle while chasing a ball in the outfield. His a?bsence further dented Pakistan’s already diminish??ing energy levels, leaving the team with limited resources in the field.

The first Test match between South Africa and Pakistan at SuperSport Park in Centurion, has delivered the excitement that cricket fans crave. With South Africa opting to bowl first, Pakistan were bundled out for 211 runs in their first innings. However, it was Day 2 that truly showcased the intensity of the match, particularly with Aamer Jamal‘s stunning performance that led to the dismissal of South African captain Temba Bavuma.

Aamer Jamal dismisses Temba Bavuma with a beauty

Jamal’s breakthrough came during the fourth ball of the 37th over. Bowling a well-placed delivery outside off stump, he tempted Bavuma into an ill-advised drive. The ball edged off Bavuma’s bat and was safely caught by wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan. Jamal’s reaction was electric; he celebrated with fervour, throwing punches in the air and showcasing his delight at claiming such a crucial wicket. This moment was not just about the dismissal; it underscored how vital Bavuma’s wicket was for Pakistan, as his presence could have posed a significant threat to their chances in the match.

The impact of Bavuma’s dismissal

Bavuma’s dismissal on a low score of 31 runs marked a turning point for South Africa, who were already struggling at 136/4 at that stage. His wicket not only lifted the spirits of the Pakistani team but also added pressure on the Proteas’ middle order. With Aiden Markram remaining at the crease and nearing his century, South Africa appeared somewhat stable but was clearly reeling from the loss of their captain. The middle-order collapse that followed Bavuma’s exit highlighted South Africa’s vulnerability, as they had hoped to build a strong innings around their skipper.

Aiden Markram steadies the ship

Despite the turmoil following Bavuma’s departure, Markram stood firm at one end. He played with resilience and skill, trying to anchor South Africa’s innings amid falling wickets. As he approached his century, it became evident that Markram would need to shoulder the responsibility alone if South Africa were to recover from this precarious position. The partnership with David Bedingham became crucial as they attempted to stabilize an innings that had quickly turned chaotic after losing key wickets in quick succession. Though Bedingham too was sent packing by Naseem Shah. Adding to the woes, Markram’s aim for getting the triple figure mark didn’t fulfil as he was dismissed for 89.

Mohammad Rizwan’s crucial role behind the stumps

While Jamal’s bowling was instrumental in claiming Bavuma’s wicket, Rizwan’s role as wicketkeeper cannot be overlooked. His sharp reflexes and safe hands ensured that Jamal’s efforts did not go in vain. Rizwan has consistently been a reliable figure behind the stumps for Pakistan, and his contribution in this match further solidifies his reputation as one of the top wicketkeepers in international cricket.

Day 4 of the Gqeberha Test witnessed an unexpected twist that briefly shifted the balance in favor of Sri Lanka against South Africa. The incident in question was a dramatic run-out involving South Africa’s Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs, which came abou??t due to a breakdown in communication between the t??wo batters.

Disastrous run of Tristan Stubbs: Lack of communication with Temba Bavuma

The turning point came when Bavuma, having played an aggressive shot to a delivery outside the off-stump, glanced the ba?ll towards the leg side. Enco??uraged by the opportunity for an additional run, he sprinted down the pitch, prompting Stubbs to respond and start running. However, a sudden realization of the precarious situation, combined with poor communication, left Stubbs stranded mid-pitch.

Dimuth Karunaratne, the former Sri Lankan captain, demonstrated exceptional awareness and quick reflexes. Seizing the chance, he fielded the ball and launched a direct hit at the stumps, with Lahiru Kumara positioned perfectly to remove the bails. The precision of the throw ensured that Stubbs was caught short of the crease, leading to his dismissal for 47 runs in 112 balls. This unfortunate yet defining moment left South Africa at 213/4 at the time of Stubbs’ dismissal.

Day 3 of the second Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka at St George’s Park proved pivotal as South Africa extended their lead to 221 runs, showcasing a blend of resilience and aggression. South Africa’s strong stand on Day 3

At stumps on Day 3, South Africa reached 191/3 in their second, thanks largely to the contributions of Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, and Tristan Stubbs. Markram scored a crucial 55 runs, while Bavuma and Stubbs added crucial runs so far. Prabath Jayasuriya provided some resistance with the ball for Sri L??anka, taking two wickets for 75 runs.? His spin bowling hinted at potential threats for South Africa as the pitch began to show signs of wear, which could play a crucial role in the remaining days of the Test. Earlier in the first essay, South Africa posted 358.

Sri Lanka’s struggle with spin

Sri Lanka began their first innings, in response of South Africa’s 358, with promise but faltered under pressure from South African bowlers. Pathum Nissanka top-scored with a gritty 89, supported by Kamindu Mendis and Angelo Mathews who each contributed valuable runs. However, the inability of the lower order to capitalize on solid starts led to their downfall as they were bowled out for less than South Africa’s total.

Dane Paterson‘s remarkable bowling performance was instrumental in restricting Sri Lanka to 328 in their first innings. Paterson claimed five wickets for 71 runs, marking his first Test five-for. His ability to exploit the conditions and maintain tight lines proved vital in dismantling the Sri Lankan batting order.

Temba Bavuma’s resilience and Tristan Stubbs’ aggression

As of stumps o?n Day 3, South Africa has scored 191 runs for the loss of three wickets, leading by 221 runs overall. Bavuma remains unbeaten on 48 runs, while Stubbs has contributed 36 not out. The duo built an unbroken partnership of 82 runs for the fourth wicket, effectively pulling away from Sri Lanka after a shaky start. Their collaboration has been instrumental in stabilizing the innings after the fall of three early wickets. With Bavuma displaying aggr??ession at a strike rate of 60.75 and Stubbs showing patience with a strike rate of 38.70, they have effectively balanced the need for runs with careful batting.

This partnership has added significant momentum to South Africa’s innings, allowing them to extend their lead considerably. As they look to build a formidable score heading into the final days of the match, their performance is critical in placing pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers to make quick breakthroughs. Keshav Maharaj could prove pivotal if he finds assistance from th??e pitch. Sri Lanka will need to break through early on Day 4 to keep their hopes alive. With only three wickets down ?and a daunting target ahead, they must aim to dismiss Bavuma and Stubbs quickly while also keeping an eye on South Africa’s aggressive lower order.

South Africa firmly in the driver’s seat against Sri Lanka

The match has been entirely one-sided, with South Africa dominating every session. After being bowled out for 191 in their first innings, the Proteas’ bowlers dismantled Sri Lanka for just 42, thanks to Marco Jansen‘s career-best 7/13. The South African batters then capitalized on the massive lead, with Stubbs and Bavuma leading the charge in the second innings. The Sri Lankan bowlers have lacked penetration, with only Jayasuriya showing occasional sparks of brilliance. Heading into the third session on Day 3, South Africa’s massive lead puts them on course for a commanding victory.
