South Africa’s journey in the T20 World Cup 2024 was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. After shaking off their long-held “chokers” tag with a dominant run to the final, they fell short at the last hurdle, losing to India by a narrow margin of seven runs.

South Africa’s dominant streak crushed by Indian bowling prowess

The Proteas entered the final undefeated, having emerged victorious from several tense encounters. Their confidence was high, and with 30 runs required from the last five overs, a historic win seemed within reach. However, the Indian bowling attack, spearheaded by the ever-reliable Jasprit Bumrah, staged a remarkable comeback. The crucial wickets of Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen swung the momentum decisively in India’s favour.

David Miller’s dismissal: The turning point

With David Miller at the crease and 16 runs needed off the final over, a glimmer of hope remained for South Africa. However, Suryakumar Yadav’s spectacular diving catch at the boundary line ended Miller’s innings and effectively dashed South Africa’s title aspirations. This defeat marked the closest the Proteas have ever come to claiming an ICC trophy, having previously suffered seven heartbreaking semifinal exits in global tournaments.

Ravichandran Ashwin, India‘s seasoned spinner, has shared his thoughts on South Africa‘s selection dilemma for the T20 World Cup 2024 final against India at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Sunday (June 29). He suggested that South Africa consider dropping Tabraiz Shamsi, their lef?t-arm spinner, despite? his recent standout performances.

Tabraiz Shamsi’s impactful performances in T20 World Cup 2024

Shamsi has been in remarkable form, playing a crucial role in South Africa’s journey to the final. His Player of the Match performance with figures of 3/27 against the West Indies in the Super 8 stage was instrumental in securing their semi-final berth. He continued his impressive run with a pivotal 3/6 in the semi-final against Afghanistan, showcasing his ability to deliver? in high-pressure situations.

Strategic concerns

However, Shamsi’s tournament hasn’t been without its challenges. He conceded 50 runs against the United States of America (USA), leading to his omission from the next match against England, where Ottneil Baartman took his place. Despite this setback, Shamsi was brought back for the crucial game against the West Indies, reflecting the team’s reliance on his wicket-taking capabilities.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s tactical analysis

Speaking on his Yout??ube channel, Ashwin highlighted that while Shamsi has a talent for breaking partnerships, he can be expensive at times. He pointed out that Indian batters could exploit thi?s by employing aggressive tactics, such as the sweep shot.

Ash??win further suggested that South Africa might benefit from selecting pacer Baartman over Shamsi in the final to streng??then their bowling attack and reduce the risk of conceding too many runs.

“Shamsi is one bowler who will go for sweeps. And India has been sweeping. Adil Rashid, (Liam) Livingstone was slightly quicker through the area. They were able to get 39 runs along with Jordan and Sam Curran. I see this as a very important match-up. And hence, I believe South Africa should seriously consider playing (Ottniel) Baartman ahead of Shamsi for the final,” Ashwin said.

In a crucial encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, England and South Africa face off in the 45th match at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium. England’s captain Jos Buttler won the toss an??d elected to bowl first against South Africa.

South Africa makes a key change in their lineup

South Africa, aiming to strengthen their bowling attack, made a strategic change to their playing XI. Notably, spinner Tabraiz Shamsi was omitted from the lineup for today’s match. This decision raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike.

Reason behind Tabraiz Shamsi’s exclusion

The exclusion of Shamsi was primarily due to the team’s tactical considerations. With the pitch conditions and the need to balance the side in mind, South Africa opted for an all-pace attack by including Ottneil Baartman in place of Shamsi. This move was aimed at exploiting the fast-bowling strength of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje alongside Baartman.

In the aftermath of South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi dismissing Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav during a recent cricket match, the player has spoken out against the social media ??bullying he and his family have faced. Shamsi revealed that the abuse extended beyond the cricketing realm, with derogatory comments targeting his wife.

Indian cricket fans abused Tabraiz Shamsi and his wife

The incident occurred during the second T20I at St George’s Park on December 12, and Shamsi’s crucial wicket of Suryakumar Yadav prompted a strong reaction from Indian fans on social media platforms. While players are accustomed to facing criticism and praise, the nature of the comments took an alarming turn, crossing the boundaries of sportsmanship.

In a statement, Shamsi expressed his disappointment at the u?se of abusive language and emphasized the n??eed for respectful discourse in the online space. He highlighted that such behavior not only affects the players but also their families, urging for a more considerate approach from fans.

‘People think they have free licence’: Shamsi

“People took it in a negative way; they thought it was disrespectful,” Shamsi was quoted as saying to Cricbuzz. “I had so much abuse hurled at me. It was probably the worst it’s ever been. There was also abuse hurled at my wife. I didn’t appreciate that. It’s uncalled for. It’s fine if you want to have a dig at the players, but to involve family and say nasty things, that pushes it to another level.

The wrist-spinner added: “I feel that if players don’t say anything about it, then people think they have free licence. More people need to speak up and say it’s not OK. Yes, we’re all trying our best. Yes, your team might not win or you might not agree with certain things. But you need to behave like a human being. You can’t carry on like an animal.”

Cricket authorities and players’ associations have increasingly been addressing the issue of online abuse faced by players. The relentless targeting of athletes, even beyond the sporting context, has raised concerns about the mental health and well-being of those involved.

Shamsi’s decision to speak out against the abuse adds his voice to the growing chorus of players advocating for a safer and more respectful online environment.

Tabraiz Shamsi’s non-availability

In a contrasting move, South Africa opted to leave out Tabraiz Shamsi, their star spinner who clinched the Player of the Match award in their previous game against Pakistan. This decision was influenced by the playing conditions in Pune, which are traditionally less conducive to spin bowling. Instead, South Africa brought back their pace spearhead, Kagiso Rabada, to bolster their bowling attack

” We were looking to bowl first as well. Pitch looks a bit dry, could skid on later under lights. Kagiso Rabada comes in for Shamsi,” Temba Bavuma said during the toss.

Shamsi picked up a three-wicket haul for just 20 runs in his quota of 4 overs. The left-arm spinner dismissed Dhananjaya de Silva (4), Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka (10) and Chamika Karunaratne (8).

Apart from Shasmi, Aiden Markram also shined with the ball taking three scalps for 21 runs in 4 overs. Markram removed set batters Kusal Perera (30) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (20) before sending Charith Asalanka (14) back to t?he pavilion to complete his three wickets.
