Pakistan’s campaign in the Champions Trophy 2025 has come to an end. After their disappointing defeat against New Zealand in the opening encounter of the tournament, Pakistan faced a crushing defeat against India at the Dubai International Stadium to mark an end to their title reign in the Champions Trop?hy.

A central figure in Pakistan’s dreadful reign in the tournament was the slow and lethargic pace with which Babar Azam scored runs throughout the competition. Seeing his struggles with form in the recent past, Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar has come ??up with some valuable advice for the Pakistani batter.

Sunil Gavaskar’s advice to Babar Azam

Babar has not been spared from criticism despite his mixed performances, including a solid 64-run knock against New Zealand. While his innings against the Mitch Santner-led side was deemed too slow, Babar also faced backlash for failing to capitalize on a promising start against India just fou?r days later. His inability to bu?ild on early momentum has sparked debate, with critics highlighting his tendency to fall short when in good positions. Despite his undeniable talent, these inconsistencies have left many questioning his form in key matches.

“If you ask me, I will tell Babar just one thing. Right now, his stance is quite spread out. If he can reduce the width between his feet, then two things will happen: One, when your feet are spread out, then you face difficulty going on back foot and front foot but when you are more balanced, then you also gain a bit of height, while you are a bit down with feet spread out,” Gavaskar told Basit Ali in a video that was posted on the latter’s YouTube channel.

Babar Azam’s horror-show in the recent past

Babar’s recent batting performances have been disappointing, with a string of low scores across various formats. In the 2024 ODI series against South Africa, he could only manage 52 and 23 runs, despite Pakistan’s series win. Earlier in the year, during the Test series against the West Indies, Babar registered scores of 31, 1, 8, and 5, further highlighting his inconsistency. These underwhelming displays have raised concerns about his ability to anchor the batting order. While his talent is unquestionable, Babar’s recent struggles emphasize the urgent need for him to return to his prolific form to strengthen Pakistan’s batting lineup.

ODI cricket has undergone? a significant transformation, and nowhere is this more evident than in the role of o??pening batters. In the early years, openers were expected to play cautiously, see off the new ball, and lay a foundation for the middle order.

The evolution of ODI opening batting: From caution to aggression

Players like Sunil Gavaskar and Geoff Boycott epitomized this approach, often focusing on preserving wick??ets rather than accelerating the s?coring rate. However, as limited-overs cricket gained popularity, teams began to realize the importance of capitalizing on fielding restrictions in the first 15 overs.

The turning point came in the mid-1990s when Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana shattered conventional wisdom by attacking bowlers from ball one, a strategy that played a key role i?n their 1996 World Cup triumph. Their aggressive minds?et forced teams to rethink their approach, paving the way for a new breed of openers who prioritized quick starts over mere survival.

By the early 2000s, Adam Gilchrist had taken this philosophy to another level, providing Australia with blazing starts in major tournaments, including the 2003 and 2007 World Cups. Virender Sehwag followed suit for India, showing that a fearless approach could yield consistent success. Brendon McCullum further pushed the boundaries in the 2015 World Cup, di?smantling ?bowling attacks within the first 10 overs, making early aggression a defining characteristic of modern ODI batting.

Modern-day openers: The art of controlled aggression

While the initial wave of aggressive openers focused solely on all-out attack, the modern era has witnessed a blend of power-hitting and calculated shot selection. Players like Rohit Sharma, David Warner and Jonny Bairstow have mastered the art of building innings while maintaining high strike rates. Unlike the early attacking openers who relied purely on explosive starts, these batters have combined aggression with consistency, making them dominant forces in ODI cricket.  Rohit, in particular, has redefined the role of an opener with his ability to convert starts into mammoth scores, evident in his recor?d-breaking three double centuries in ODIs.

Sunil Gavaskar reveals his choice for the most destructive ODI opening batter

Former Indian cricketer Gavaskar has hailed Rohit as the most destructive opener in world cricket following his match-winning century against England in the second ODI in Cuttack. Facing immense pressure due to a lean patch, Rohit responded in style, smashing a breathtaking 119 off just 90 balls to lead India to a comfortable victory while chasing a stiff target of 305. His outstanding performance not only sealed the series for India but also served as a strong statement ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy, set to begin on February 19.

In his column for Sportstar, Gavaskar pointed out that Rohit’s ability to convert starts into big scores makes him one of the most feared batters in ODIs.

“Rohit is perhaps the most destructive opening batter in the one-day game, and his striking form is a vital ingredient if India is hoping to regain the Trophy that they won way back in 2013. Not many batters have hit multiple double-hundreds in this format, and Rohit is one of those rare batters who has done so,” Gavaskar wrote.

The recent announcement of India’s squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 has sparked debate, particularly surrounding the exclusion of Karun Nair. Despite being in sensational form during the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25, Nair’s name was missing from the squad. Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar? has now shared his ins??ights into why the talented batter did not make the cut, even after his stellar performance.

Karun Nair’s stunning performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy

Nair has been nothing short of exceptional during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he displayed remarkable consistency with the bat. Representing Vidarbha, Nair amassed a staggering 779 runs in just eight matches, including five centuries. His prolific run-scoring earned him the top spot in the tournament’s run charts, and despite Vidarbha’s loss to Karnataka led by Mayank Agarwal in the final, he was named the Player of the S?eries. His performance raised eyebrows and sparked conversations about his potential inclusion in India’s Champions Trophy squad.

Sunil Gavaskar explains the reason behind Karun Nair’s exclusion

Despite Nair’s undeniable performance, his name was notably absent from the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy 2025. Gavaskar, a cricketing legend, provided his insight into the selection decision. He explained that Nair’s exclusion stemmed from considerations of team balance and player roles. Gavaskar highlighted those two players in the squad already had well-established roles, and their strong performances in recent tournaments made it challenging to accommodate Nair in the team.

em>Where should they fit him? You could have taken the spot of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. KL will perform the role of second wicketkeeper-batter for this team, and his performance during the 2023 World Cup was good. I don’t think the Indian cricket team has played much ODI cricket after that. Shreyas Iyer has also performed well in the format. That is why Karun Nair has not been picked, the former Indian captain told ??SportsTak (v??ia Inside sports)

Shreyas Iyer: One of India’s most consistent performers in recent years, Iyer’s aggressive and calculated approach in the middle order will play a key role in building partners??hips and accelerating the scoring rate in the latter stages of the innings.

“KL Rahul had a fantastic 50-over World Cup. Shreyas Iyer – the kind of ODI World Cup he had, I think he needed some backing. In the last few months, he has not got that backing. I will definitely back these two guys to be there in the Champions Trophy,” said Pathan on Star Sports.

Rishabh Pant: As one of the most dynamic wicketkeepers and batters, Pant’s inclusion offers a blend of aggression and finesse. ?His explosive batting style makes him a game-changer in the lower middle order, capable of turning games around with his q??uick-fire innings.

Hardik Pandya: The all-rounder is a vital cog in both batting and bowling. Pandya’s ability to provide crucial breakthroughs with the ball and accelerate India’s scoring in the middle and lower order makes him indispensable.

Kuldeep Yadav: The left-arm wrist-spinner is one of the premier bowlers in limited-overs cricket. Kuldeep’s abil?ity to bowl attacking spells and pick crucial wickets will be pivotal in breaking partnerships and providing the team with momentum.

Mohammed Shami: One of India’s most reliable fast bowlers, Shami’s experience in international cricket makes him an essential part of the bowling attack. His ability to deliver in the crunch moments will be invaluable, especially in the high-pressure situations of ?the Champions Trophy.

Jasprit Bumrah: India’s premier fast bowler, Bumrah is renowned for his lethal yorkers and death-over skills. Despite concerns over his fitness, his presence ?in the squad remains crucial, as his skillset is unmatched when it comes? to closing out tight games.

Shubman Gill: One of the most promising young talents in Indian cricket, Gill’s consistency and ability to play both attacking and calculated innings make him a valuable player. He could provide India with the much-needed stability in the top order.

Sanju Samson: Samson bri??ngs depth to India’s middle order, with his wicketkeeping skills and ability to play match-winning knocks. A dynamic player capable of turning a game around?? in a short period, his role will be crucial in the limited overs format.

“Sanju Samson, with the hundreds he has scored, has to be in the squad because he has scored hundreds for India. How can you ignore somebody who is scoring hundreds for his country,” said Gavaskar.

Mohammed Siraj: The fast bowler’s form and his ability to generate pace and bounce will be a key asset for India. Siraj’s ability to bowl tight spells and pick up wickets in the early overs ma??kes him an important figure in India’s bowling attack.

Nitish Kumar Reddy: Reddy’s inclusion brings a touch of youth to the squad. Known for his con?sistency in domestic cricket, his all-around abilities could be crucial in filling any gaps in the middle-order or as a backup b??owler in certain conditions.

“Having a fast-bowling all-rounder as your backup is a wonderful option. Nitish Kumar Reddy is on a high also. Not easy to perform in Australia, he has done that,” observed Pathan.

India’s recent defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia has raised the curtain on some serious questions with regards to the future of Indian cricket. One such important matter is the future leadership of the team. People within the cricketing community and beyond have raised the issue of looking beyond the leadership of the current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. However, his recent failures against New Zealand and a 1-3 thrashing from the Australia?? in BGT 2024-25? has made the questions over his leadership more pertinent than ever.

Sunil Gavaskar opens up on who should be the next captain of the Indian team

Former Indian skipper and legend Sunil Gavaskar had some interesting thoughts on the leadership role within the Indian team. Gavaskar, who was in Australia covering the 5-match Test series as a broadcaster recently highlighted the Indian player who according to him carries the personality of a leader and therefore is suitable to be the next captain of the Indian crick?et team.

“With Bumrah, you can see that he expects the others to do what their job is and why they’re in the national team. But he doesn’t seem to pressurize anybody. And with the fast bowlers, he has been absolutely brilliant. Standing at mid-off, mid-on. Every time he was on hand to tell them and guide them. I think he was absolutely brilliant and I won’t be surprised if he takes over very soon,/em> Gavaskar said on Channel7 speaking about Jasprit Bumrah.

Additionally, Gavaskar pointed out the reason why he thinks Bumrah is the perfect person to lead the Indian team and the qualities he carries as a person which are cruc??ial in a player to become the captain of the team.

“He could be the next man. I think he will be the next man. Because he leads from the front. He has got a very good air about him. The air of a leader. But not somebody who is going to put pressure on you. Sometimes you have captains who put a lot of pressure on you,” Gavaskar concluded.

Indian star’s track record as the captain

The 31-year old Indian pacer led the Indian team recently during the first Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at Perth. The Indian team performed exceptionally well in the Test match and won convincingly against the Aussies by 295 runs. Bumrah was called to become the captain of the team for the second time during the final Test match after skipper Rohit opted to keep himself out of the match in Sydney. Bumrah continued his exceptional performance in Sydney and clinched 2 crucial wickets in the first Australian innings. However, the Indian pacer could not continue bo??wling for his team on the third day of the match due to a back spasm. This proved detrimental to the visitors as Australia managed to achieve the target of 162 runs for the loss of just 4 wickets to win the series.

The thrill of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy came to an end as Australia def??eated India in the fifth and final Test match to clinch a 3-1 series win. With this, Australia’s long wait of getting a hold of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has finally come to an end after 10 years. Amidst celebration from the home team, a slip-up ??during the presentation of the trophy has caught the attention of cricket fans and analysts.

Sunil Gavaskar wasn’t invited to present the BGT 2024-25

In a major development at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), the Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar who shares his name along with former Australian cricketer Allan Border at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, was not invited on stage to present the trophy to the winning captain Pat Cummins, along with his Austr??alian counterpart. The 75-year-old former Indian skipper stood 100 metres away from the presentation site whil?e Border was called on the stage to present the prestigious trophy.

Later? on, the Indian legend?? recalled the incident during a discussion with News Corp and remarked that he would’ve loved presenting the trophy to the winning captain.

“I certainly would have loved to have been there for the presentation. After all it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about A?ustralia and India. I mean, I am here at the ground. To me it should not matter Australia won when it comes to the presentation. They played the better cricket so they won. That’s fine. I would have been happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan ??Border,/em> Gavaskar said.

“We acknowledge it would have been preferable if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar had been asked to go on stage,” a CA spokesperson said in a statement accepting their mistake. However, Cricket Australia also confirmed that Gavaskar was made aware of the fact that he would have presented the trophy to Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah if the visiting side would’ve won the ?Sydney Test and retained the trophy.

Sunil Gavaskar, a legendary figure in cricket and a steadfast pillar of Indian cricket both on and off the field, has always worn his passion for the game on his sleeve. However, his emotions occasionally take center stage, especially when the team faces challenging situations. A similar instance unfolded on the fourth day of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, when Rishabh Pant threw his wicket away with a reckless shot. The dismissal did not sit well with Gavaskar, whose candid reaction during his commentary on ABC Radio quickly went viral on social media. Now, the iconic cricketer has offered a clari??fication on his much-discussed remarks, shedding light on his perspective.

Sunil Gavaskar’s viral reaction to Rishabh Pant’s dismissal echoed Indian fansemotions

The Indian team was in a critical position when Pant headed his way back to the pavilion. The top-order had already succumbed to the Australian bowlers and the Indian innings desperately needed a partnership to reach somewhere near to the mammoth total of 474 runs scored by the Aussies in their first innings. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and wicket-keeper batter Pant did provide some hope to the fans but Pant’s irresponsible shot selection proved a liability t??o the team.

“Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! You’ve got two fielders there and you still go for that. You’ve missed the previous shot and look where you’ve been caught. You’ve caught at deep third man. That is throwing away your wicket. Not in the situation that India was. You have to understand the situation as well. You cannot say that is your natural game. I am sorry that is not your natural game. That is a stupid shot. That is letting your team down badly. He should not be going in that (Indian) dressing room, he should be going into the other dressing room.â€?/em> Gavaskar had said.

Gavaskar was performing his commentary duties with Harsha Bhogle while Pant’s dismissal to?ok place. The Indian legend blasted at the dynamic batter and gave an angry ?rant on the manner in which Pant gifted his wicket to the Australians.

Gavaskar explains his angry reaction at Pant’s dismissal

After his angry reactio?n went viral on social media and became a talking po?int, Gavaskar has now given an explanation on the matter. According to Gavaskar, the major reason behind his anger was the egoistic intent of the shot from Pant.

“Honestly, this game has made me. Indian cricket has made me. So when I see somebody as talented as Rishabh Pant play that shot and I had no problems with the first shot he played. The reason why I got upset was the ego took over for the next ball. I’ve just been hit in the midriff attempting a ??similar shot. I’m gonna show the bowler who’s the boss. Test cricket is not easy./em> he said.

Gavaskar further remarked if Pant’s shot wo??uld’ve gone for a 6, he would’ve appreciated the wicket-keeper batter, but there is a fine line between being carefree and careless. According to Gav??askar, Pant had crossed the line and given his wicket away with that shot.
