Day one of the Ranji Trophy sixth round witnessed a buzz of excitement with the return of Indian cricket’s biggest stars to the domestic circuit. The BCCI had mandated their participation following India’s disappointing Test performances in late 2024. However, the return did not go as planned for some of the stalwarts, including Rohit Sharma, who struggled to make an impact in Mumbai?/strong>s clash against Jammu & Kashmir at the BKC Ground.

Rohit was dismissed for just 3 runs in the first innings by pacer Umar Nazir Mir, continuing the trend of low scores for star batters. The first day largely belonged to the bowlers across the country, as they utilized favorable ??conditions to dominate the opposing line-ups.

Rohit Sharma’s fight back in the second innings for Mumbai

Despite the poor start, Rohit made a spirited comeback in Mumbai’s second innings on Day 2. Though he was dropped early in his knock by Nazir, the Indian captain capitalized on the reprieve. In the same over, Rohit smashed 14 runs, including a towering pull shot for six. He continued his aggressive approach, striking another maximum off Auqib Nabi‘s over long-off, tallying three sixes and two fours in his 28-run knock.

Abid Mushtaq’s spectacular catch steals the show

Rohit’s promising innings was cut short by a moment of brilliance from Abid Mushtaq. In the 14th over, bowled by Yudhvir Singh, Rohit attempted to drive a good-length delivery straight but mistimed the shot. T??he ball sailed towards the short mid-wicket region, where Mushtaq dived and plucked a one-handed stunner to dismiss the Indian captain. The breathtaking catch ended Rohit’s stay at the crease, drawing applause from fans and players alike.

India’s Test captain Rohit Sharma’s much-anticipated return to the domestic circuit was cut short by a cheap dismissal in the Ranji Trophy on January 23. Representing Mumbai, Rohit looked uncomfortable against Jammu and Kashmir pacer Umar Nazir Mir’s disciplined bowling. In the 6th over of the game, Rohit misread the bounce of a length ball from Nazir and top-edged it, handing a simple catch to Paras Dogra. The dismissal added to Rohit’s recent struggles with the bat, leaving fans and pundits concerned about? his form ahead of upcoming international ?assignments.

A memorable moment for Umar Nazir

For Jammu and Kashmir pacer Nazir, Rohit’s wicket was a defining moment in his career. Nazir, who maintained a tight line and length throughout his spell, not only dismissed the Indian captain but also scalped three other key Mumbai batters, including Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube. His fiery bowling performance ensured that Jammu and Kashmir remained competitive in the first innings. However, it was the dismissal of Rohit, one of the most celebrated batters in world cric??ket, that stood out as the highlight of the day.

Nazir reveals why he didn’t celebrate Rohit’s wicket

While most bowlers would h?ave celebrated exuberantly after dismissing a player of Rohit’s caliber, Nazir chose to stay composed. Speaking to the media after Day 1, Nazir revealed that his decision not to celebrate Rohit’s wicket stemmed from his deep admiration for the Indian captain.

As a self-proclaimed fan of Rohit, Nazir felt it was important to show respect rath?er than rejoice after dismissing a player he idolized. He further expressed that securing a victory in the match would hold immense pride for him and his team, especially given the significance of facing and competing against India’s captain on such a platform.

“The first thought in my mind was… I am a big fan of Rohit, and that is why I didn’t celebrate after taking his wicket today. If we win this game, it would be a proud moment because India’s captain is playing in the opposition,” said Nazir.

After a tumultuous year in international cricket, India‘s Test and ODI regulars made their much-anticipated return to domestic cricket in the Round 6 of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season.

BCCI’s guidelines for Indian international cricketers

The move comes in the wake of heavy criticism following India’s shocking home Test series whitewash against New Zealand and their underwhelming performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 against Australia. The pressure was particularly intense on senior players like Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja, who ???were expected to make a strong statement with their performances.

Adding to the intrigue, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently mandated that all Indian internationals not engaged in national duties must participate in domestic cricket to re??gain form and confidence. However, despite the high expectations, the return of these stars turned out to be a disappointing affair, as they struggled to make an impact in their respective matches.

Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill and others’ outing in Ranji Trophy 2024-25

1. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal Fall Cheaply for Mumbai

Rohit, returning to Ranji cricket after nearly a decade, faced immense scrutiny as he walked out to open the innings for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sharad Pawar Academy in Mumbai. However, the Indian skipper’s comeback proved to be a damp squib as he was dismissed for just 3 runs off 19 balls. Rohit, who scored only 31 runs in three Tests in Australia, was clearly out of touch, struggling with his shot selection before gifting a simple catch to the extra-cover fielder.

Jaiswal, who had impressed in the Australia series, also had a forgettable outing. The young left-hander was trapped leg-before-wicket by Auqib Nabi?? for just 4 runs in the third over of the match. Mumbai’s opening duo faltered within the ??first six overs, leaving the defending champions in a precarious position.

2. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant Disappoint

Gill, appointed vice-captain for the upcoming England ODI series and ICC Champions Trophy 2025, failed to live up to his billing. Representing Punjab against Karnataka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Gill opened the innings alongside Prabhsimran Singh but managed only 4 runs off 8 deliveries before edging a delivery to the keeper off Abhilash Shetty.

In Rajkot, Pant’s domestic return was equally disappointing. Representing Delhi against Saurashtra, the explosive wicketkeeper-batter lasted just 10 deliveries before being caught by Prerak Mankad off Dharamendrasinh Jadeja for a solita?ry run. Pant, who has been under scrutiny for his inconsistent perf??ormances, failed to make the most of this opportunity to silence critics.

3. Ravindra Jadeja shows glimpses of brilliance

Jadeja, representing Saurashtra in their clash against Delhi at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, had an eventful yet inconsistent return to first-class cricket. The all-rounder started on a shaky note, conceding nine runs in his opening over to Delhi’s Yash Dhull, who too?k an aggressive approach. However, Jadeja quickly recovered, showcasing his trademark control and accuracy with the ball.

He managed to pick up two crucial wickets, providing glimpses of his skill and experience. While his bowling performance helped Saurashtra maintain some control, Jadeja’s overall impact was limited, highlighting that he is still working his way back to peak form after his recent international assignments. His return adds depth to Saurashtra’s lineup, but the all-rounder will need more consistency to dominate in domestic cricket.

In a much-anticipated return to first-class cricket after a decade, Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma‘s stint with Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy was unfortunately cut short. Rohit, who has been struggling with form in Test cricket over the last few months, was dismissed for just 3 runs off 19 balls against Jammu and Kashmir at the Wankhede Stadium on January 23, 2025.

Aiming for form: Rohit Sharma’s comeback with Mumbai

Rohit had joined Mumbai’s training camp with the aim of rediscovering his form, especially after his recent challenges in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 where he managed only 31 runs in five innings. His participation was part of a broader strategy to ensure that experienced players engage with domestic cricket, a move endorsed by India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, who emphasized the ??importance of Test players playing first-clas?s cricket.

Rohit’s return to domestic arena ends with a cheap dismissal

Rohit was spotted walking onto the field with determination, dressed in Mumbai’s traditional white cricket attire. The scoreboard at the time of his dismissal showed Mumbai at 12/1, with Rohit coming in to bat after the fall of an early wicket.

Facing the bowler Umar Nazir Mir, Rohit attempted to play a defensive shot, but an edge off his bat found its way to the slips, where it was caught by Paras Dogra, ending his brief return to the Ranji Trophy. The dismissal was a classic example of how a single mistake can alter the course of a batters’ innings, especially in the challenging conditions of domestic cricket.

Hopes for a strong comeback dashed in Ranji Trophy clash

The match against Jammu and Kashmir was significant as it was part of the second phase of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, with Mumbai gearing up for their sixth-round fixture. Rohit’s keenness to train with the Mumbai squad under head coach Omkar Salvi had sparked hopes among fans and cricket pundits that this might be the platform for the captain to regain his touch in longer format cricket. However, the outcome was far from what was hoped for.

The iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, a venue etched in the history of Indian cricket, celebrated its golden jubilee with a grand event organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Sunday.

The evening saw a star-studded gathering of cricketing legends, including India’s captain Rohit Sharma, who share??d his heartfelt dr?eams and aspirations for the stadium and Indian cricket’s future.

Rohit Sharma’s dream: Bringing the World Cup to Wankhede

The Wankhede Stadium, synonymous with some of cricket’s most unforgettable moments, has witnessed legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, and now Rohit creating history. For Rohit, the stadium holds a deep emotional connection, hav??ing grown up playing cricket in its confines.

During the event, Rohit shared his long-cherished dream of bringing the World Cup trophy to Wankhede, a sentiment rooted in the triumphs of the past. He recalled his dream of bringing the T20 World Cup to Wankhede, inspired by the 2007 victory in South Africa.

Reflecting on the 2024 T20I World Cup win, he mentioned being stranded in Barbados for three days due to a storm and tornado during which India team discussed the??ir plans for returning? to India and what to do next when they will land back to home.

In 2007, when we came back after winning the T20I World Cup in South Africa, I had a small dream of bringing the World Cup here once. When we won the World Cup, I remember we were in Barbados. We were stuck there for three days due to a storm and tornado. We were planning what to do when we go back to India,” Rohit said at the event.

Celebrating past triumphs and eyeing future glory

Rohit further revealed that the team planned to visit Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi but were unsure of what would follow. He expressed his desire to bring the 2024 World Cup to Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, as previous World Cup celebrations in 2007 and 2011 were also held there, making it significant?? to continue the tradition.

“The plan to go to Delhi was decided, but what after that? Nobody knew anything. I wanted the World Cup to come to Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. We won three World Cups recently. When we won in 2007 and 2011, the celebration was held at Wankhede. It was important to bring 2024 as well over here,” he added.

Eyes set on the Champions Trophy 2025

Rohit also spoke about the upcoming Champions Trophy in 2025 set to be held in a hybrid format in Pakistan and the UAE from February 19 to March 9. He expressed confidence in the support of 140 crore Indians a?nd pledged to give their be??st to bring the Champions Trophy to Wankhede Stadium.

After India’s consecutive series defeats against New Zealand and Australia, and a steady decline in the quality of cricket on the pitch which started with a rare ODI-series loss against Sri Lanka, some punitive actions were anticipated at the hands of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)? so that the situation of the players on the pitch can improve.

The cricketing community saw some kind of action which BCCI took recently with the release of a 10-point diktat for players streamlining everything they do on and off the pitch; from cricket to their respective families involvement during the foreign tours. Reactions poured in over this 10-point mandate ever since its announcement. However, it’s only now that the true nature of these new rules is revealed.

What are the BCCI’s 10-point guidelines?

The BCCI has introduced new guidelines aimed at strengthening team cohesion and discipline. Players are now required to participate in domestic cricket to remain eligible for national selection, with exceptions only granted in extraordinary circumstances. The board has also emphasized team travel, disallowing individual arrangements unless approved by the Head Coach and Selection Committee Chairman. Personal staff, including hairdressers or nannies, are banned from tours unless authorized by the B?CCI. Players must remain with the team until the end of a series or tour, promoting bonding and continuity. Disciplinary actions, such as suspensions or fines, will be imposed for non-compliance. A new family travel policy allows players?families to join tours lasting over 45 days, with the BCCI covering shared accommodation costs. Additionally, players must adhere to baggage limits, attend full practice sessions, avoid personal endorsements during tours, and prioritize BCCI activities.

Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar’s reaction on the new rules

The chief selector of the Indian cricket team Ajit Agarkar and captain of the Indian team Rohit Sharma recently made their first public appearance since these guidelines got released by the BCCI. On being ask??ed their views on the new rules, the two stalwarts of Indian cricket made some astonishing comments which highlighted the true nature of the new rules.

“Who has told you about these rules? Has it come from the official handle? Let it come, and we will talk,?/em> Rohit said, while being visibly irritated with the reporter who asked him about the new guidelines during the press-conference.

Agarkar’s reaction too was far from ideal and it equally astonished the cricketing community. “I think every team has some rules in place. We have spoken about various things you see over the last few months where we can improve as a team and get a bit closer as a team. We have seen in the last few months the need for some changes, more bonding in the team,” the former Indian pacer said.

However, he additionally said it’s not like a school punishment for the players and the rules are meant to have some border in the team since these players are superstars in their own right.

“It’s not a school, it’s not a punishment. It’s just you have some rules and when you are playing for the national team, you just follow the rules. These are mature individuals. They are superstars in their own right in international sport. They know how to handle themselves,” Agarkar added further.

The Indian team is set to play against England in a five-match T20I and 3-match ODI series starting from January 22 before heading to the UAE to play their fixtures of th?e Champions Tro??phy 2025.

The anticipation for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is building, particularly because it marks a significant return of international cricket to Pakistan. For the first time since 1996, Pakistan will host an ICC tournament, an event that carries both excitement and apprehension, especially regarding India‘s participation. With the backdrop of political tensions and security concerns, the question arises: Will India captain Rohit Sharma travel to Pakistan for the captains’ photoshoot?

A historic event in a complex context

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to be a unique event, showcasing cricket’s grandeur while navigating the complexities of Indo-Pak relations. India have opted out of playing its matches in Pakistan due to security concerns, choosing instead to stage all its games in Dubai. This hybrid model allows India to participate without setting foot on Pakistani soil during the tournament. However, this arrangement does not eliminate the possibility of Rohit traveling to Pakistan for official pre-tournament events.

Reason why Rohit Sharma may travel to Pakistan

Before any ICC tournament, it is customary for the captains of all participating teams to attend an official event that includes a photoshoot with the trophy and a press conference. These events are typically held in the host country – in this case, Pakistan. If the ICC decide to hold this event in Pakistan, Rohit may need to make his first-ever trip to the country, despite India not playing any matches the?re. As of now, there is no confirmation regarding the locatio??n of this event, but it remains a strong possibility due to ICC traditions.

Has Rohit ever played in Pakistan?

Rohit has never played an international match in Pakistan throughout his illustrious career. If he travels for this pre-tournament event, it would mark a historic moment not only for him but also for Indian cricket as a whole. The significance of such a visit c??annot be overstated; it would symbolize a step towards normalizing cricketing ties between India and Pakistan amidst ongoing political tensions.

The future of hybrid models

The hybrid hosting model for ICC tournaments is set to continue until 2027, meaning that India and Pakistan will not play matches in each other’s countries during ICC events. For Champions Trophy 2025, while India will play their matches in Dubai, Pakistan will host its fixtures at home. This arrangement reflects ongoing security concerns but also highlights the importance of maintaining competitive cricket between these two cricketing giants.
