The cricketing world is abuzz with anticipation as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prepares to announce the Indian squad for the remaining Tests against England. Notably, the five-match series currently sta??nds levelled with both sides? winning a game each.
As the selection process draws near, there is a high possibility of the return of India’s seasoned batters Virat Kohli and KL Rahul to the India squad. It is worth mentioning Kohli chose to sit out the first two games for personal reasons, while Rahul ??was sidelined from the second match due? to injury despite a decent performance in the opening clash.
Although the looming return of the formidable Indian duo has injected a new sense of vigour into the team and fans, their comeback also raises questions about who will make way for these proven performers. Former Indian spinner and current member of the Jio Cinema broadcasting panel, Pragyan Ojha, recently shared his insights on the same and named th?e two Indian batters who could make way for Kohli and Rahul.
Speaking to Colors Cineplex, Ojha candidly named Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar as the likely candidates to be dropped from the Indian squad. Ojha highlighted the need for impact performances, stating that the two batters couldn’t quite seize the opportunities presented to them.
“Shreyas Iyer was left slightly behind. When you talk about great batters like Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul have also scored runs, when they return, they will automatically be part of the XI. So probably Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar will have to make way because the situation is like that,” said Ojha.
The veteran cricketer further emphasized the challenge ??faced by the players in the current scenario. Ojha suggested that with the imminent return of established batters, there is limited room for experimentation and also advised Iyer and Patidar to prove their worth at the domestic level to stake their claim for a spot in the national team.
“It’s not that you don’t want to give opportunities but when great batters are coming and you don’t have that much room, you cannot give them the cushion. So go back and score runs in domestic cricket,” the former India spinner added.
Iyer, a part of the Indian team for both opening Tests against England, has shown promise but struggled to convert starts into substantial scores. Similarly, Patidar, making his Test debut in the second game, faced a similar fate as he couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity.

]]>After registering a whopping 302-run victory against Sri Lanka in Match 33 of ODI World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, India have succesfully secure??d their birth in the semi-final stage of the tournament.
What lies ahead is the Men in Blue’s clash against the Proteas, who stand at the second position in the points table, just behind the Rohit Sharma-led side. The cricketing ??world is abuzz with excitement as two cricketing powerhouses will lock horns in Kolkata on Sunday.
Ahead of the clash, former Indian cricketer Pragyan Ojha has expressed his excitement to see how a notable South African batter, in particu??lar, will fa??ce the formidable Indian bowling attack.
India, the unbeaten juggernaut in this tournament, have been on a remarkable winning streak, conquering all seven matches they’ve played so far. The Indian batters have consistently delivered with the willow, while the bowlers have been relentless in their pursuit of wickets.
On the other side, with six wins in seven matches, South Africa have displayed great all-round performance. The Proteas’ batters have been the backbone of their success, churning out impressive performances whenever needed.
Following India’s stellar victory over Sri Lanka, Ojha praised pacer Mohammed Shami, who bagged his second five-wicket haul in the ongoing edition of the World Cup. The 37-year-old further expressed his excitement for the 2011 ODI World Cup champions’ forthcoming encounter against South Africa, adding that he is excited to see how the Temba Bavuma led-side’s batters, especially Heinrich Klaasen, will perform against the Indian b??olwers on the spin-friendly track of the Eden Gardens.
It is worth noting that Klaasen has played a pivotal role in his team’s campaign so far, amassing 315 runs in seven innings with a classy average of 52.50.
“Well done #Shami once again. Indian team marches on! Can’t wait to see the clash between Indian bowlers and South African batsmen, especially looking forward to #HeinrichKlaasen facing Indian spinners at Eden. It promises to be thrilling clash. #INDvsSA,” Ojha wrote in his tweet.

]]>Former Indian off-spinner Pragyan Ojha has revealed a fascinating anecdote which took place during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2009 season, where one of the Deccan Chargers’ (DC) franchise owners gifted him a watch as a reward for taking the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar.
The now-defunct Chargers were the IPL winners of the 2009 edition which was held in South Africa. The incident Ojha narrated about was during DC’s encounter with Sachin-led Mumbai Indians (MI) at Kingsmead in Durban.
Ojha also scalped the wickets of Shikhar Dhawan and JP Duminy along with the prized scalp of Tendulkar, finishing with figures of 3/21. He also walked away with the ‘Man of the Match’ award.
“This was in Durban, just before our game against MI. Our owner came to me, and the way I was bowling in South Africa, he had a word with me. He is from Hyderabad [the team Ojha represented in Ranji Trophy], [he is] one of the team owners in our local leagues in the Hyderabad Cricket Association system. He knows me right from my childhood. He walked up to me and said ‘Pragyan, if you get Sachin Tendulkar’s wicket, then definitely I’ll have a special gift for you,” Ojha said during his chat with Wisden.
Further, Ojha made sure that his? old-a?ccomplice and admirer knew about his fetish for watches.
“He knew exactly that I used to love watches. I told him, ‘Sir, If I get his wicket, I need a watch’. It so happened, the next day, I got Sachin paaji’s wicket and he gifted me a watch,” the retired cricketer added.
Interestingl??y, after his stint with Deccan Chargers, Ojha made a move to Rohit? Sharma led MI Paltan.
“It’s a special wicket. Getting someone like Sachin paaji is a wonderful feeling, one of those wickets that you always dream of getting as a bowler. You feel nice, that you’re good enough to compete with people who have dominated world cricket,” Ojha concluded.

]]>India’s vice-captain, Rohit Sharma, recently took to Instagram to share a photograph with former teammates Suresh Raina and Pragyan Ojha, which was taken during India’s tour of New Zealand in 2009.
The throwback image contained a picturesque background of the beautiful country, with the three players of the Indian?? squad, back then.
Also, Rohit took a dig at the recently-retired off-spinner, Ojha, with a hilarious caption on the post. “(From the archive) First New Zealand tour for 3 of us way back in 2009 remembering how beautiful your smile is Ojha,” wrote Rohit.
On that tour, after losing the T20I series, I??ndia won the five-match ODI series 3-1. The tour culminated with the hist??oric 1-0 Test series win on New Zealand soil for India.
Since then, the career graphs of the three former teammates have gone separate ways. Both Raina and Rohit turned out to be batting mainstays for India under MS Dhoni.
After languishing lower down the order, Rohit’s career transformed since his move at the opening slot in the 2013 Champions Trophy.
Raina, until the 2015 O?DI World Cup, did exceptionally well for India in the lower-middle order. But, his fortunes changed after one bad series against South Africa, the same year.
Ever since Raina has failed ??to find a permanent spot for himself in the Indian team. Further, the rise of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, led to Ojha receiving the axe in the natio?nal setup.
Ojha drew curtains on his cricketing career earlier in February this year. Both Ojha and Rohit were part of a title-winning campaign for Deccan Chargers? (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2009. Also, Ojha and Rohit had a successful stint at the Mumbai Indian (MI) camp.
Rohit, along with Raina, has been quite active on social media, with t??he cricketing world in a lull, due to the ongoing pandemic situation.

]]>India was always blessed to have huge reserves of potential when it comes to spin bowling, both traditionally and contemporarily. Today, India has Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja in the Test line-up and Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav i??n white-ball cric??ket.
Since A??nil Kumble hung up his boot?s and Harbhajan Singh went out for favour, it was the likes of Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha who helped the Indian team during the transition phase.
The Hyderabad left-arm spinner clin??ched over a hundred wickets in his brief Test career. Since making his debut?? for India in ODIs back in 2008 season, Ojha was once a regular feature in all formats of the game for India, under the leadership of MS Dhoni.
Further, Ojha was also part of IPL winning teams during his stint at Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians, along with Rohit Sharma. However, the off-spinner could not make the cut into the Indian side after the famous Sachin Tendulkar-farewell Test match, back in 2013.

]]>Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha has announced retirement from ??all forms of cricket with immediate effect. He was not playing international cricket since 2013; however, the left-armer was active in the domestic circui??t until 2019.
The Bhubaneshwar-born off-spinner debuted for India in the 2008 Asia Cup against Bangladesh. The following year, he bagged his T20I cap against the same opposition during the T20 World Cup. He claimed four wickets in the game and was rewarded with the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
Ojha only played 18 One-Day Internationals and 6 T20Is, in which he took 21 and 10 wickets, respectively.
In red-ball cricket, the 33-year-old debuted against Sri Lanka in 2009. Unlike the limited-overs stint, Ojha shimmered in the longest format of the game. He went on to take 100-plus wickets in ??Test cricket.
The famous Sachin Tendulkar farewell game was also Ojha’s last in Test Cricket. In that match, he picked up ten wickets in total as India managed to defeat West Indies by an innings. The offie finished his Test career with 113 scalps in 24 games.
??The veteran bowler broke the news on Twitter and posted?? a long message attached to it.
“It’s time I move on to the next phase of my life. The love and support of each and every individual will always remain with me and motivate me all the time,” tweeted Ojha.

“To be an Indian cricketer and represent the country at the highest level was always a dream I cherished as a youngster,” Ojha said in a statement shared on Twitter.
“My eventful career has witnessed many ups and downs. Over the time, I have realized that the legacy of a sportsperson is not just the outcome of his hard work and dedication, but also the faith and guidance bestowed upon by the association (team management), teammates, coaches, trainers, and the fans,” the statement read further.
“I am very thankful to Mr. V.V.S Laxman for mentoring me like an elder brother, Mr. Venkatapathy Raju for being the role model I always looked to emulate, Mr. Harbhajan Singh for being a constant adviser and Mr. M.S. Dhoni for providing me with the honorable opportunity to wear the Indian Cap,” added the Hyderabad stalwart, who also represented Bihar, later.
“Lastly, I am certain that looking back at my career will always fill me with a sense of pride. The most memorable moments would be receiving my Test Cap from Mr. Sachin Tendulkar and accomplishing, the feat of taking 100 Test wickets. I hope to continue contributing towards the growth of Indian Cricket in every capacity possible,” concluded the 33-year-old.

]]>Cricket is often called the gentlemen’s game. When the sport was conceived by the British, they made it clear that matches would be played with decency which meant that the players were expected to behave on the field and not indulge in any sledging or cheating. However, over the decades, there has been an increase in the number of instances where players lost their cool and ended up in controversial situations. The latest among them is Indian’s spinner Pragyan Ojha whose actions during a match were found to be highly objectionable.
From past few days, a vide??o is going viral on social media in which Ojha can be spotted kicking the wickets at the non-striker鈥檚 end after the batsman hit him for a gigantic six. The left-arm spinner delivered a low full-toss on which the batsman moved down the line and hit a huge straight six. After hitting the shot, the batsman waved his bat in joy while his partner rushed towards him and gave a hug. While the umpire was signalling a six, a furious Ojha kicked the wickets so hard that all the three stumps were uprooted.
