In the first qualifier of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024, Saint Lucia Kings edged out defending champions Guyana Amazon Warriors by 15 runs, courtesy of the DLS method. The match played at a packed Providence Stadium, featured some dramatic moments, including an exceptional spin bowling display by Guyana’s Noor Ahmad, who produ??ced a crucial wicket in the 12th over of the s?econd innings.

Noor Ahmad’s spin magic

With the Guyana Amazon Warriors chasing a daunting target of 199, left-arm spinner Noor provided a glimmer of hope for his side. In the 12th over, Noor bowled a brilliantly flighted delivery to Saint Lucia Kings’ all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius. The ball tossed up with deceptive spin, drifted in sharply, beating Pretorius’ tentative push. The result was spectacular – Pretorius, bowled for just 2 off 3 balls, watched his leg stump cartwheel out of the ground. This left the Warriors reeling at 106/4, with the required run rate soaring close to 14 runs per over. Noor’s masterful delivery gave Guyana a brief boost, but it was Saint Lucia Kings who kept tightening their grip on the game.

Rain derails Guyana Amazon Warriors’ chase

Earlier, Saint Lucia Kings set an imposing target, thanks to a strong batting performance led by their captain, Faf du Plessis. The experienced South African played a crucial knock, scoring 57 runs off 36 balls, including five boundaries and three towering sixes. However, the standout performer was opener Johnson Charles, who blazed his way to 79 off just 45 balls, hammering eight fours and five sixes. Charles’ powerful innings provided the Kings with early momentum, allowing them to post a challenging 198/5 in their 20 overs.

Guyana’s bowlers struggled to contain the Kings’ onslaught, with Charles and du Plessis particularly aggressive in the middle overs. Despite a few breakthroughs, the Warriors’ attack couldn’t prevent the Kings from building a strong platform for victory.

Guyana Amazon Warriors, in their reply, put up a spirited fight. Star batter Shimron Hetmyer was in explosive form, smashing 37 runs off just 18 balls at a blistering strike rate above 200. Hetmyer’s aggressive innings gave the Warriors a fighting chance as they reached 106/4 after 13 overs. However, just as the match was reaching a critical juncture, rain intervened, halting play and dampening Guyana’s hopes of a comeback.

When play was called off, Guyana Amazon Warriors found themselves 15 runs short of the revised DLS target, handing Saint Lucia Kings a crucial victory. Charles’ match-winning knock earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match award, as his aggressive stroke play proved pivotal in securing the Kings’ spot in the CPL 2024 final.

Saint Lucia Kings’ path to the CPL 2024 final

The St. Lucia Kings demonstrated their dominance in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 by securing a resounding victory over the Trinbago Knight Riders in the 26??th match held at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. With a convincing win by 80 runs, the Kings not only showcased their batting and bowling prowess but also solidified their position at the top of the points table.

St. Lucia Kings set the tone with a dazzling start

Winning the toss, Kieron Pollard, captain of the Knight Riders, opted to field first, a decision that would soon haunt his team. The Kings’ opening pair, Faf du Plessis and Johnson Charles, launched a blistering assault on the Knight Riders’ bowling attack. Their partnership of 145 runs came off just 12.4 overs, setting a formidable foundation for the innings. Du Plessis played a captain’s knock, scoring 59 runs off 43 balls, while Charles contributed significantly with a quick-fire 89 off 40 deliveries. This explosive start propelled the Kings to an impressive total of 218 runs for the loss of six wickets in their allotted overs.

Despite losing their opening partnership, Tim Seifert provided some resistance with a spirited knock of 30 runs from 17 balls. However, the rest of the batting lineup faltered against Pollard’s bowling onslaught, who managed to take crucial wickets and restrict the Kings from reaching an even higher total.

Noor Ahmad’s magical delivery and Knight riders batting woes

Chasing a target of 219 runs seemed daunting yet achievable on a pitch conducive to batting. However, the Knight Riders failed to capitalize on this opportunity. Their innings began with promise but quickly turned into a struggle as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Jason Roy was the only batsman who showed some resilience but could not anchor the innings ?effectively.

Andre Russell, known for his explosive batting capabilities, entered at a critical juncture after Pollard’s dismissal in the seventh over. His initial aggression included two massive sixes that hinted at a possible turnaround for TKR. Yet, his hopes were dashed when Noor Ahmad bowled him out with a delivery that spun away sharply after pitching. Russell misjudged its bounce while attempting to heave it over square leg, resulting i?n his s??tumps being shattered—a pivotal moment that shifted momentum firmly in favour of the Kings.

A team effort by the Kings

Following Russell’s departure, Chris Jordan and Jayden Seales attempted to stabilize the innings with brief contributions of 27 and 16 runs respectively. However, their efforts were insufficient as wickets continued to tumble around them. The Knight Riders’ innings ultimately crumbled for just 138 runs in 18 overs, handing an emphatic victory to the Kings.

The Kings’ bowlers executed their plans effectively, Noor Ahmad was particularly impressive with his two-wicket haul that included Russell’s prized wicket. The disciplined bowling performance combined with sharp fielding ensured that TKR never found their rhythm throughout the chase.

With this victory, the St. Lucia Kings not only showcased their potential as serious contenders in CPL 2024 but also highlighted areas where Trinbago Knight Riders need significant improvement. As both te?ams look ahead in the tournament, this match will undoubtedly be pivotal for both sides as they strategize for upcoming challenges in this thrilling league.

The match, held at the ic??onic Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, saw a combination?? of tactical brilliance and individual excellence, particularly from Noor Ahmad, who played a pivotal role in his team’s success.

Toss and decision

Saint Lucia Kings won the? toss and, recognizing the conditions that favoured bowlers early on, opted to bowl first. This decision proved to be spot-on as their bowlers quickly found rhythm and applied pressure on the Antigua and Barbuda batsmen.

Antigua and Barbuda innings

Antigua and Barbuda, put into bat, struggled to build a solid foundation as they lost wickets at regular intervals. The innings began with Fakhar Zaman and Justin Greaves opening the batting. While Zaman managed to scor??e 21 runs off 17 balls, his stay at the crease was cut short as he a??ttempted to accelerate the scoring rate. Greaves, the top scorer for Antigua and Barbuda, played a gritty knock of 36 runs off 26 balls, including 5 fours, providing some stability at the top.

However, the middle order failed to capitalize on the start. Kofi James and Jewel Andrew could only muster 5 and 15 runs, respectively, as they found it difficult to handle the disciplined bowling from Saint Lucia Kings. Imad Wasim made a valiant attempt to an??chor the innings, scoring 29 not out off 23 balls, but Antigua and Barbuda struggled to find the boundaries consistently.

The standout performance in Saint Lucia Kings’ bowling attack came from Noor Ahmad, whose deceptive spin and clever variations left the opposition baffled. Ahmad’s 4-over spell yielded 3 wickets for just 18 runs, a key factor in restricting Antigua and Barbuda to a modest total of 142/7.
