As the cricket world continues to debate over Rohit Sharma‘s future as India‘s Test captain, former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has come out strongly in support of the embattled skipper. With India set to face England in a crucial five-match Test series later this year, Sidhu believes that Rohit should continue to lead the team, citing his experience and the lack of a suitable replacement.

Navjot Singh Sidhu makes case for Rohit Sharma

Rohit’s leadership in Test cricket has faced intense scrutiny following India’s back-to-back series losses to New Zealand and Australia, which resulted in the team missing out on the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the first time. Despite his recent struggles with the bat, where he managed just 164 runs in 15 innings at an average of 10.93, Sidhu remains adamant that Rohit should retain his position as captain.

Sidhu’s argument centers around the absence of a viable alternative to Rohit. He questions who could possibly replace Rohit at such short notice, emphasizing that no other player has demonstrated the necessary performance or experience to take over the captaincy. Rohit’s impressive record in England, where he was India’s leading run-scorer during their 2021 tour, is another key factor in Sidhu’s reasoning. Rohit amassed 368 runs across eight innings at an average of 52.57, showcasing his ability to thrive in English conditions.

If there are 10 people in India, they have 20 different opinions. Who can you make the captain of the Test format at the last moment? You don’t have anyone. No one has performed like this. You don’t have a replacement. Rohit has experience. You cannot replace Rohit. His record in England is strong. You will have to take along experience and young players till the 2027 World Cup. You will have to set the team combination right. Rohit will be the captain and he should be the captain. Will you put him on the throne now? He has won 2 World Cups. In such a situation, what litmus test will you take?” Sidhu stated in a conversation with Sports Tak.

Experience and youth: The perfect blend of Team India

Sidhu also highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between experienced players and young talent in the team. He believes that players like Rohit, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are crucial for providing stability and leadership, while younger players such as Nitish Reddy, Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav bring the necessary exuberance and innovation.

Till the 2027 World Cup, you will have to make a mix of the experience of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and the exuberance of someone like Nitish Reddy, Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav. Until you do not make this mix, you cannot select a good team,” Sidhu added.

The challenge of replacing Rohit

The potential replacement for Rohit, if he were to step down or be replaced, is Jasprit Bumrah, who has already led India in two Tests during the recent series in Australia. However, Bumrah’s recurring injury issues raise concerns about his ability to handle the demands of Test captaincy consistently.

Sidhu’s stance is clear: without a proven alternative, Rohit should continue as captain. His experience and past successes, including leading India to two ICC titles, make him the ideal choice for the upcoming England series. Sidhu’s comments reflect a broader sentiment within Indian cricket that stability and continuity are essential for success, especially in the high-pressure environment of Test cricket.

Rohit has recently clarified that he is not planning to retire from ODI cricket anytime soon, despite earlier speculation that he might step down after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, his future in Test cricket remains uncertain due to his recent form. Sidhu’s backing suggests that Rohit still has a significant role to play in Indian cricket, particularly in the Test format.

Navjot Singh Sidhu is known for his jolly comments and honest analysis amongst the cricketing world. The world saw a glimpse of his admiration for the Indian team with his commentary throughout the Champions Trophy 2025. However, now the former Indian player has pointed out a towering challenge in front of the head coach of the Indian team, Gautam Gambhir. The challenge, according to Sidhu, could be the biggest of Gambhir’s coaching career till now.

India’s next big challenge: The long and arduous tour to England

After the excitement and thrill of the Indian Premier League (IPL) had settled in, the Indian team is set to go on a 5-match Test tour of England where they will be thoroughly tested in the longest format of the game after the series loss against Australia.

According to Sidhu, the English conditions will be the toughest challenge for Gambhir in his coaching career till date considering the help English pitches provide to pacers. In a recent social media post, Sidhu appreciated the fact that Gambhir is willing to travel with the India A team to England before the series to have a look at the options available at his disposal.

“Toughest challenge for @GautamGambhir will be playing England in the first half of the English season in test matches – juicy damp pitches offer lateral movement of the pitch and swing due to resistance in the air â€?wanting to go there with the India A is preventing and preparing rather than repenting and repairing – forethought wins , in life and Chess,” Sidhu said.

India A are scheduled to play a series of 3 four-day matches against the England Lions in preparation for India’s upcoming tour of England, which kicks off on June 20. While the exact dates for these fixtures have yet to be confirmed, they are expected to take place between the conclusion of the IPL on May 25 and the beginning of the Test series.

The high-stakes England tour marks the beginning of next WTC cycle for India

The 5-match Test series against England will mark the beginning of the next World Test Championship Cycle (WTC) cycle for India. The series will commence at Leeds, Headingley, and conclude at The Oval in Kennington.

After their two successive appearances in the WTC final, the Indian team failed to qualify this time around. India received a humiliating series white-wash against New Zealand and a 1-3 thrashing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia meant that their chances of playing in the WTC final drew to a close. In the upcoming WTC cycle, India will play against England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka on away tours while host Australia, West Indies and South Africa at home.

Indian wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav stole the show in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand, leaving cricket fans and pundits alike in awe. Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, known for his colourful commentary and poetic descriptions, hailed Kuldeep’s performance as nothing short of “Sammohini Jaadoo” (hypnotic magic) after he outfoxed the formidable Kane Williamson.

Kuldeep Yadav sends back Kane Williamson early

The match, taking place at the Dubai International Stadium, saw New Zealand opt to bat first after winning the toss. The Black Caps got off to a strong start, thanks to a 57-run opening stand between Will Young and Rachin Ravindra. However, India’s fortunes changed dramatically with the introduction of Kuldeep Yadav into the attack. The left-arm leg-spinner made an instant impact, dismissing Ravindra with a brilliant googly on his very first delivery. Ravindra, who had been given two lifelines earlier, failed to pick the variation and was bowled for 37 off 29 balls.

Kuldeep’s magic didn’t stop there. In his next over, he outwitted veteran batsman Kane Williamson, who got forward to push but ended up handing a simple return catch to the bowler. This dismissal was a testament to Kuldeep’s ability to deceive even the best batters with his flight and spin. Williamson, known for his exceptional technique and temperament, was left bewildered by Kuldeep’s guile, much to the delight of the Indian team and fans.

Navjot Singh Sidhu applauds Kuldeep Yadav

Sidhu, who has always been known for his effusive praise of exceptional cricketing skills, was quick to laud Kuldeep’s performance. “This is not just cricket; it’s ‘Sammohini Jaadoo’ at its finest. Kuldeep Yadav has shown once again why he is one of the most feared spinners in the game. His ability to outsmart batsmen like Kane Williamson is a rare gift,” Sidhu exclaimed during the live commentary.

Sidhu’s admiration for Kuldeep’s skill is well-founded. The Chinaman bowler has been instrumental in turning the tide of matches in his team’s favour, often with his unorthodox and unpredictable bowling style. His performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy final was no exception, as he helped India regain control after New Zealand’s promising start.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has already ignited excitement among cricket fans, with the tournament set to showcase intense battles among the world’s best teams. For India, the stakes are especially high as they aim to win back-to-back ICC trophies, following their triumphant 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. Grouped with New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Pakistan in Group A, India’s journey promises thrilling encounters, and fans eagerly await the announcement of the squad.

India’s bowling a concern amid fitness issues

While India’s batting lineup remains a stronghold, fitness concerns in the bowling department have emerged as a significant challenge. The delayed squad announcement for the Champions Trophy has heightened speculation, especially regarding Jasprit Bumrah’s availability. The star pacer suffered a back spasm during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney, raising doubts about his participation. Adding to the concerns is Mohammed Shami’s return after a year-long injury hiatus, while young talents like Arshdeep Singh are still finding their footing in ODIs.

Navjot Singh Sidhu reveals India’s bowling unit for Champions Trophy 2025

Former cricketer and commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu recently shared his picks for India’s bowling lineup for the Champions Trophy. Sidhu selected Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Shami, and left-arm pacer Arshdeep, emphasizing their potential as a ‘lethal match-winning combination.’

“Fast bowlers hunt in pairs or packs—a lone wolf is nothing but a pack ineffective. With Mohammed Siraj bowling his heart out, Mohammed Shami fit, and a left-arm pacer like Arshdeep Singh in the mix, India has a great asset. Both he and Bumrah were instrumental during the 2024 World Cup, picking up wickets every 13 deliveries. This quartet can exert relentless pressure on opponents,” Sidhu wrote on X.

Sidhu on India’s leading pacer’s fitness and delay in CT squad

Sidhu expressed significant concern over Bumrah’s injury status, emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding the star pacer’s availability and how it has contributed to the unprecedented delay in India’s Champions Trophy squad announcement. He pointed out that such delays are rare in India’s cricketing history, particularly for a tournament as prestigious as the Champions Trophy.

“25 years of ICC history â€?India’s Champions Trophy squad announcement delayed for the first time ever. The January 12 deadline passed, the selectors & teammates wait with bated breath, 1.5 billion hearts pray and hope for the best, all eyes on Jasprit Bumrah. His name alone defines Indian cricket’s zenith, his brilliance commands global reverence,” said Sidhu.

“Yet, the mystery of his injury looms large . This isn’t just a delay; it’s the weight of a nation’s hope riding on the shoulders of a legend. The cricketing world stands still, waiting for Bumrah’s triumphant return,” he added.

The fourth Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 ended with Australia beating India and taking a crucial 2-1 lead in the leg with one Test left. While many moments captured fans attention from the Boxing Day Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), a bizarre incident has ignited a firestorm of controversy. Australian all-rounder Travis Head was faced the heat following his weird celebration after he dismissed India’s wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant.

Travis Head’s celebration sparks outrage

The incident unfolded on the final day of the game when Head, brought into the attack by Australian captain Pat Cummins, managed to dismiss the well-set Pant. The Indian star, attempting a pull shot off a short delivery, mistimed it, sending a catch to Mitchell Marsh at deep mid-wicket. This dismissal was pivotal, as it sparked a collapse in India’s batting lineup, leading to an Australian victory by 184 runs and securing a 2-1 lead in the series.

However, it was Head’s celebration after the wicket that drew significant attention and criticism. Head performed a gesture where he made a hole with his left hand and repeatedly inserted his right index finger into it, a move that was quick to be labeled as ‘vulgar’ or ‘obscene’ by many on social media and in the cricketing world.

Navjot Singh Sidhu demands ICC to take action against Head

Former Indian cricketer and a popular broadcaster Navjot Singh Sidhu also expressed his strong disapproval with the act of Head. Sidhu, who has always been known for his outspoken nature, particularly on matters concerning the integrity of cricket, demanded the International Cricket Council (ICC) take action. His call for a review on the matter was echoed by fans and former cricketers alike, many of whom felt that while cricket allows for exuberant celebrations, they should not cross into disrespect or vulgarity.

Sidhu’s social media post went on to describe the act as setting the “worst possible example” when children, women, and people of all ages are watching the game. Sidhu also called for “stringent punishment” to deter such conduct in the future, emphasizing the need to uphold the spirit of cricket.

“Travis head’s obnoxious behaviour during the course of the Melbourne test doesn’t auger well for for the gentleman’s game…â€?sets the worst possible example when there are kids, women , young & old watching the game…â€? this caustic conduct did not insult an individual but a nation of 1.5 billion Indians……stringent punishment that would serve a deterrent for the future generations needs to be slapped on him so that no one dares follow suit !!!” wrote Sidhu on X (formerly Twitter).

Australian captain Pat Cummins explains Head’s controversial gesture

The gesture, although intended as a light-hearted inside joke according to Australian captain Cummins, was explained as Head mimicking putting his hot finger into a cup of ice, a reference to a previous celebration after taking a wicket. Despite Cummins’ attempt to diffuse the situation during the post-match press conference, the celebration had already sparked widespread debate about sportsmanship, cultural sensitivity, and the boundaries of on-field celebrations.

Speaking to Star Sports, former Indian cricketers Navjot Singh Sidhu and Harbhajan Singh have identified the clash between India and Australia as the standout fixture of the tournament. In a stunning display of prowess, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have continued their impressive streak in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, securing a spot in the playoffs ahead of any other team this season. Their recent victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the iconic Eden Gardens showcased their unwavering determination and skill. Contrasting starkly with their previous season’s performance, where they languished at seventh place on the points table, the Knight Riders have undergone a remarkable transformation this year.

Displaying a newfound vigor and unity, they have emerged as a formidable force in the league stage. Leading the points tally with an impressive 19 points from 13 matches, the team’s resurgence has drawn praise from none other than former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu. He attributes this remarkable turnaround to the astute leadership of Gautam Gambhir from the dugout.

Observing the remarkable transformation, Sidhu stepped up to commend Gambhir, expressing his view that when faced with challenges, Gambhir consistently elevates his performance.

“I have seen Gautam Gambhir gets inspired when the situation gets tough. He starts advising and that’s how it should be. Anybody can be a pilot when the sea is calm but you only learn when in adverse situations,” Sidhu said on Star Sports.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has set May 1st as the deadline for all cricket boards to announce their squads for the T20 World Cup, slated to be held in the USA and West Indies this year. As anticipation and speculation mount among fans regarding India’s squad for the tournament, numerous cricket experts, former players, and sports commentators have weighed in with their opinions and recommendations on the type of squad the BCCI should assemble for this prestigious T20 cricket event.

Joining them, former Indian cricketer and current member of the Hindi commentary panel of Star Sports for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Navjot Singh Sidhu, has offered his insights on the matter.

Navjot Singh Sidhu’s key advice to Rahul Dravid

During the #AskStar segment on Star Sports, Sidhu responded to a fan’s question about what suggestion he would offer to India’s Head Coach, Rahul Dravid, to end the Indian cricket team’s 11-year trophy drought. Sidhu emphasized that if Dravid aims for Team India to secure the title, the Board must form a team consisting of five specialist bowlers capable of taking wickets. He stressed that his advice was straightforward and urged Dravid not to compromise on the team’s bowling unit while selecting the squad.

“My straight advice to Rahul Dravid is that if you want to win this tournament, have five wicket-taking specialist bowlers, simple. The collapse of a team’s character stems from the compromise column. Your character takes a hit when you compromise. You have three spinners â€?Bishnoi, Kuldeep and Jadeja picks himself. And play three fast bowlers,” said Sidhu on the #AskStar segment on Star Sports.

Sidhu later named pacers who should be included in India’s squad for the World Cup. He named Mayank Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohsin Khan, and Mukesh Kumar as potential representatives of India in the tournament.

“Mayank Yadav, if fit, walks into the side. Khaleel Ahmed, Mohsin Khan. And Delhi Capitals have Mukesh Kumar. I feel that the Indian team has so many options that if they take wicket-taking bowlers and do not compromise â€?thinking that this guy can bat a bit, bowl a bit. These bits-and-pieces things,” the 60-year-old stated.

India‘s last triumph in an ICC Trophy dates back to 2013, when MS Dhoni‘s team clinched the ICC Champions Trophy in England. Since then, the Indian team has endured an 11-year-long wait for another ICC title, marked by a series of disappointments and missed opportunities. Despite reaching the pinnacle stages of major tournaments, including four World Cup semifinals and two finals, along with setbacks in the Champions Trophy final 2017 and consecutive World Test Championships (WTC), India’s trophy cabinet remains bare.

Ideal bowling combination for T20 World Cup 2024

In 2023, India came tantalizingly close to breaking the drought when they hosted the World Cup, only to falter in the final against Australia. As another World Cup approaches, this time in the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies in the form if T20 global showpiece event, former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has offered some advice to Rahul Dravid, the current head coach regarding the bowling combination with which India could enter the upcoming tournament.

Sidhu, Dravid’s former teammate, cautioned against compromising on the team composition, urging Dravid to maintain a balance of five specialist bowlers-either two spinners and three pacers or vice versa, depending on the conditions-regardless of the circumstances.

“My straight advice to Rahul Dravid is that if you want to win this tournament, have five wicket-taking specialist bowlers, simple. The collapse of a team’s character stems from the compromise column. Your character takes a hit when you compromise,” Sidhu said to Star Sports.

Spin department and pace arsenal

Regarding the spin department, Sidhu advocated for the inclusion of the promising leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi alongside the seasoned duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. On the pace front, he suggested considering Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, Mohsin Khan and Mayank Yadav, provided the latter regains full fitness.

“You have three spinners – Bishnoi, Kuldeep and Jadeja picks himself. And play three fast bowlers. Mayank Yadav, if fit, walks into the side. Khaleel Ahmed, Mohsin Khan. And Delhi Capitals have Mukesh Kumar. I feel that the Indian team has so many options that if they take wicket-taking bowlers and do not compromise – thinking that this guy can bat a bit, bowl a bit. These bits-and-pieces things,” the 60-year-old concluded.

Group stage battles: India’s path

India’s group stage fixtures in the upcoming World Cup promise intrigue, with matches against Ireland, Pakistan, USA and Canada. The highly anticipated showdown against Pakistan on June 9 in New York is poised to captivate fans worldwide. Each match presents unique challenges, emphasizing the need for India to approach every game with unwavering focus and determination to secure their berth in the knockout stage.
