The epitome of cricketing action has begun and is set to peak in the coming days with Champions Trophy 2025 entering into its most exciting phase with some jaw-dropping fixtures up for grabs. However, before the semi-finals of the tournament, former England captain Nasser Hussain has opened up on the manner in which the current format is going on with India having to play all its fixtures in Dubai while all other teams travelled to Pakistan.

Nasser Hussain exclaims on advantage to India in Champions Trophy 2025

Ahead of England’s vital clash against Afghanistan, former England skipper Hussain has m?ade some sensational remarks on Indian prospects in the tournament and talked about the potential reasons behind their impressive performanc?es so far.

“It is an advantage. So, the best team in the tournament have that advantage. And I saw a tweet the other day saying ‘Pakistan host nation, India home advantage.â€?It sums it up really,” Hussain remarked while discussing India’s chances in the tournament with Michael Atherton in the Sky Sports Podcast.

Additionally, Atherton also affirmed that the fact India is playing their matches only in one venue is an advantage to the team, while other sides in th??e tournament have to travel to different venues, including Dubai and acclimatize to the ??conditions accordingly.

“What about the advantage India have in playing in Dubai, only in Dubai? Which seems to me to be a hard-to-quantify advantage, but an undeniable advantage, They’re playing at just one venue. They don’t have to travel either between venues or, you know, between countries, as a lot of other teams have to do. Therefore, the selection, you know, can focus in on the conditions in Dubai. And obviously, they’ll know where they’re playing their semi-final as and when they get through to that. That seems to me to be an undeniable advantage, but, you know, kind of hard to quantify how big an advantage,” Atherton said.

Hussain analyses India’s strategy in Champions Trophy 2025

Furthermore, Hussain also talked about India’s successful game plan to tackle teams in the venue so far and their ability to bring the game to the opposition. The Indian team managed to triumph against Bangladesh in the opening encounter of the tournament a?nd defeated Pakistan to enter into the semifinals of the compe?tition.

“They were very smart in their selection. They probably knew what Dubai is going to be like. They picked all their spinners. there was a bit of debate with Indian media saying why don’t you have gone for an extra seamer? Why all these spinners? Now we can seen why. Other teams will have to pick playing XIs for different conditions in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi and then they have to travel and adjust to those conditions So it is an advantage but what else could have happened. Once India refused to come to Pakistan, what could have happen. You can’t have a tournament like this without India-Pakistan. It had to be in Dubai. They sit happily and comfortably there. They know they are going to play six games there and if they will win all those, they will win another global tournament,” Hussain concluded.

India are set to square-off against New Zealand in their last group-stage fixture. The?? Blackcaps, like India, have remained undefeated ??in the tournament so far with 2 wins to their name and a better run-rate than the Indian team.

The cricketing world is set to witness yet another thrilling chapter of the intense India-Pakistan rivalry in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Scheduled to take place in Dubai??, this high-voltage encounter will be a rerun of the 2017 final, where Pakistan emerged victorious. With both teams aiming for supremacy?, the match promises to be one of the biggest spectacles of the tournament.

Nasser Hussain names the winner of the high-voltage clash

Former England captain and renowned commentator Nasser Hussain has weighed in on the highly anticipated showdown, naming India as the favorites to win. Speaking on Sky Sports, Hussai?n emphasi??zed the dominance of Rohit Sharma-led Team India, citing their recent performances and ranking as key factors.

“It’s the biggest game in all of cricket here in Dubai—India, Pakistan, one of the great rivalries, a rerun of the 2017 final where Pakistan won. India are favorites,” Hussain stated.

Nasser terms Jasprit Bumrah as the best player on the planet

While backing India, Hussain also acknowledged the absence of their star pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, as a significant setback. He heaped praise on Bum??rah, calling him the best ?cricketer in the world at the moment.

“They are the best side; they are the number one ranked side. They are without Bumrah, the best player on the planet—not just the best bowler, the best cricketer on the planet right now—and you know that will hurt them,” he remarked.

“With the batting depth and spin options they have, and Shami maybe just coming back from injury and getting a few more overs into him, India are the side to beat without a doubt,” Hussain concluded.

In contemporary cricket, fans are witnessing the rise of numerous great players who have consistently performed at the highest level. Icons like Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, and Babar Azam have captivated audiences with their exceptional skill sets and ability to adapt to the demands of the game. Each player brings a unique style, showcasing their prowess across formats, whether in the gritty Test matches or the fast-paced limited-overs games. Their remarkable consistency and composure under pressure have set new benchmarks in batting, solidifying their legacies as some of the finest cricketers of this era. Amidst this elite group, former England captain Nasser Hussain has highlighted one player who particularly stands o??ut.

Nasser Hussain names his favourite player to watch out in modern-day cricket

In a recent segment on Sky Sports, Nasser shared his admiration for Indian batting sensation Rohit Sharma and his unique skill and style in batting. Nasser acknowledged that batting, especially at the highest levels of cricket, is incredibly challenging. For most players, it feels like a high-speed, high-pressure endeavor, where there’s a constant sense of urgency when facing world-class bowlers.

However, Nasser pointed out that Rohit seems to play with exceptional calmness and control. Unlike many batters who often appear hurried or out of time, Rohit makes batting look effortless. He appears to have more time to decide his shots, suggesting that he can read and anticipate the bowler’s delivery better than most. This quality—having ‘time’—is a rare attribute in cricket and speaks to Rohit’s ability to stay composed under pressure, pick up the bowler’s cues quickly, and execute his shots with precision. For Hussain, this ease and grace make Rohit a joy to watch and a standout among modern-day cricketers.

“I would say I like Rohit Sharma. I have to be honest. I just think batting is so hard, it’s such a difficult task but Rohit makes it look so easy. Batting, I always felt rushed when you’re facing any bowler you feel a bit like you’re out of time Rohit seems to have so much time to play a shot,” said Nasser on Sky Sports.

The star batter’s impact in the current era

Notably, Rohit’s influence on modern cricket is significant. As the captain of the Indian cricket team and an accomplished opener, he has played a crucial role in many of India’s triumphs. With a remarkable record in ODIs and T20s, including several double centuries, he has established himself as one of the top run-scorers in the game.

Rohit’s aggressive yet elegant batting style, coupled with his strategic thinking as a captain, has made him a formidable force on the field. His calm demeanor and ability to handle pressure situations further amplify his importance in the team. As Nasser aptly pointed out, Rohit is not only a player to watch but also a representation of modern batting excellence, inspiring a new generation of cricketers worldwide.

In a recent column for the Daily Mail, former England cricket captain Nasser Hussain praised Joe Root for his outstanding batting performance in the ongoing Test series between England and Sri Lanka but pointed out a critical area for improvement for England’s star cricketer.

Nasser Hussain urges Joe Root to sharpen catching skills

Hussain’s analysis highlights both Root’s brilliance and a crucial aspect of his game that needs refinement.

Sri Lanka, much like the West Indies, does not feature prominently on the Test cricket calendar. However, with the conclusion of this series on the horizon, England has demonstrated sufficient prowess against these teams to set themselves up for a robust challenge against Australia,” Hussain wrote.

While acknowledging Root’s superb batting, which has seen him amass significant runs, Hussain stressed a need for improvement in another aspect of his game.

Although Root’s batting was nothing short of spectacular, there is one area where he must elevate his performance â€?his catching. He missed several chances in this Test, and with the Ashes coming up, any missed opportunity against players like Steve Smith or Marnus Labuschagne could prove costly,” Hussain warned.

He also discussed the conditions and the England bowling attack’s performance.

The weather on Sunday was particularly challenging, with hot and dry conditions leading to a flat pitch that offered little spin or swing. On such days, the efficiency of the bowling attack becomes crucial. Despite the absence of key bowlers like Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson, England’s ability to dismiss Sri Lanka twice on this pitch at Lord’s was a commendable achievement,” the former England skipper noted.

On Day 3 of the second Test at Lord’s, Root showcased his batting excellence, scoring his second century of the match and his 34th Test century overall. Root’s remarkable innings of 103 came on the back of his first-innings score of 143, further solidifying h?is status as England’s leading century-maker in Test history.

Root’s performance at Lord’s has not only added significant runs to his tally but has also cemented his legacy at the historic venue, as he became the highest run-scorer in Test matches at Lord’s. His consecutive centuries are a testament to his exceptional skill and consistency.

Nasser Hussain has strongly criticized the cricket scheduling in England, highlighting the impact of excessive cricket across various formats on player health and performance. His comments came in the wake of England Test captain Ben Stokes being ruled out of the upcoming three-Test series against Sri Lanka due to a hamstring injury.

Ben Stokes’ injury

The injury occurred during a game in ongoing The Hundred Men’s 2024, where Stokes was playing for the Northern Superchargers against the Manchester Originals. The 33-year-old all-rounder suffered the injury while taking a run, and it is expected to sideline him for the series. Stokes hopes to recover in time for the Test tour of Pakistan starting in October. His absence is a significant blow to England’s plans, as??? Stokes has been a key player in recent series.

Stokes had previously undergone knee surgery last November and opted out of the T20 World Cup earlier this year to focus on his fitness for Test cricket. Despite a strong performance, including taking five wickets in a 3-0 series victory over the West Indies this summer, Stokes suffer??ed a hamstring tear during The Hundred.

Nasser Hussain’s criticism

Hussain has voiced strong criticism regarding the congested cricket schedule in England. According to Hussain, the proliferation of various cricket formats – such as T20 matches, 50-over games, Test cricket, and The Hundred – has led to excessive strain on players.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Hussain remarked, “Injuries happen in any sport, professional sport, it could’ve been a Blast game, or County Championship games. I don’t think the format got him injured. There are just too many formats of the game. There’s too much pressure on everyone concerned with the game, whether it’s the ground staff, umpires, players. Everyone wanting their piece of the pie, something has to give. Rob Key has to sit there and he’ll be under pressure,”

Impact on players and their workload

Hussain also compared Stokes’ situation to that of Jofra Archer, who has faced a series of injury problems. Archer missed several games for Southern Brave due to workload management issues, a? situation Hussain believed reflects a broader p?roblem within the cricketing calendar.

“We hear James Vince at the toss, talk about Jofra. We are hugely disappointed that Jofra is not playing. James Vince says nothing to do with us, ECB have pulled him out. He’s a blow with a long-term history of injuries. You gotta look after your cricketers,” the cricketer-turned-commentator added.

Consequences of a packed cricket calendar

Hussain concluded his critique by addressing the consequences of the overloa?ded cricket schedule, linking it to both player injuries and the qual?ity of playing conditions.

“Everyone wants Ben Stokes to play in every format and a person who historically gets injured has got injured again. So, it’s a consequence of having Blast, Hundred, 50-over Metro Cup, County Championship, Test cricket in a county calendar and a calendar that’s only that finite, and in the end someone’s got to give yourâ€?Something why our pitch is slightly poor this year,” Hussain concluded.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has thrown his weight behind Andy Flower as a potential candidate for the vacant England white-ball head coach position. The former Zimbabwean batter has enjoyed?? immense success as a coach in recent years, and Hussain believes his experience and expertise make him an ideal fit for the role.

Andy Flower’s evolution

Hussain acknowledged that there might be some resistance to appointing Flower due to his previous stint as England’s coach. However, he emphasized that the former batter has evolved significantly since then.

“Some would view (Flower) as a backward s?tep ‘never go back, you are going back to a former England coachbut I think Andy has moved on. Andy was very anti-franchise and IPL, but that was a very long time ago. Now he has travelled the ??world, winning for most franchises and doing some really good things,/em> Hussain told the PA news agency.

Flower’s proven track record

Flower’s coaching CV boasts an impressive array of achievements. He has led various teams to suc?cess, showcasing his ability to adapt to different playing conditions and cultural environments. His experie?nce in the T20 format, particularly in franchise cricket, aligns well with the demands of modern white-ball cricket.

“He is a brilliant coach. You just have to look at his CV and, if Rob Key got Andy Flower’s CV out, there is hardly a better option than that, but again it is if Andy wants to do it. I just look at the best person for the job, simple as that. I’ve worked with Kumar and (he has a) brilliant brain. I’v?e played and seen Andy Flower, brilliant player-coach, brilliant man,/em> he added.

Finding the right candidate

While Hussain is clearly impressed by Flower’s credentials, he also highlighted the importance of finding a coach who is genuinely interested in the role. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has faced challenges in attracting top-quality coaches in the past, and ensuring that the right cand??idate is not only qualified but also m??otivated is crucial.

“They are all very good candidates and I repeat the job is not so much finding the candidate, it is finding the? candidate that actually wants to do the job,/em> the Former English captain state?d.

As the ECB continues its?? search for a new white-ball head coach, Andy Flower’s name is likely?? to be high on the shortlist. His proven track record and ability to adapt to modern cricket make him a compelling candidate.

However, the final d??ecision will ultimately depend on whether he is interested in returning to international cricket and whether the ECB believe he is the best person to lead the England white-ball team to future success.

Matthew Mott has resigned from his position as the head coach of England’s white-ball cricket team. This decision was confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in an official statement on Tuesday, July 30. Mott’s departure comes after a tenure that started promisingly but ultimately fell short of expectations. Marcus Trescothick, the assistant coach, has been appointed on an interim basis to take over Mott’s responsibilities. The ECB’s announcement mark a significant change in the team’s coaching staff as they prepare for future international competitions.

Initial success and subsequent decline

In May 2022, England decided to separate their coaching roles for red-ball and white-ball cricket, appointing Brendon McCullum as the Test coach and Mott for ODIs and T20Is. Mott’s appointment brought immediate success as he led England to victory in the T20 World Cup in 2022. However, the team’s fortunes declined in the subsequent tournaments. England’s performance in the ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup last year was disappointing, with the team failing to progress past the semi-finals in both events. This downturn in results put Mott’s position under scrutiny and ultimately led to his resignation.

Nasser Hussain’s perspective on Brendon McCullum

Former England captain Nasser Hussain weighed in on the coaching situation, expressing concerns about the potential for McCullum to take on additional responsibilities for the white-ball sides. Speaking to Sky Sports, Hussain highlighted that while Rahul Dravid successfully managed all formats for India, he doubted whether McCullum or other coaches would want such an extensive workload. Hussain emphasized that coaches value having time for themselves and the flexibility to work in other leagues, such as the IPL. He questioned whether an England coach could balance national duties with additional commitments, underscoring the complexities of modern cri??cket coaching roles.

“I don’t think it’s the right thing to do. It has worked for other nations… for India, Rahul Dravid did it very well, but I don’t think McCullum or others would want it [both jobs]. Coaches are quite happy having some time to themselves, and have the ability to do some work in the IPL maybe – though whether an England coach could do that at the same time, I don’t know?,” Hussain said.

Reflecting on Matthew Mott’s tenure

Reflecting on Mott’s tenure, Hussain acknowledged the initial promise and subsequent challenges faced by the team. Mott’s early success in leading England to their second T20 World Cup victory was a highlight, but the team’s failure to defend their 50-over and T20 World Cup titles raised concerns.

Hussain pointed out that poor planning and decision-making contributed to England’s poor performance in the 2023 World Cup. Under the captaincy of Jos Buttler, the team managed only four wins and failed to qualify for the semi-finals. Hussain expressed mixed feelings about Mott’s departure, recognizing both the early achievements and the significant decline in performance that led to the decision.

“My first reaction is it’s a bit of a shame, but not unexpected. Ultimately you’re judged by results. Results started very well, on the back of continuing the Eoin Morgan/Trevor Bayliss era… they had that immediate success, winning the T20 World Cup in 2022. But since then, it’s gone completely in the other direction. The 50-over World Cup [in 2023] was a poor, poor performance, it really was. They were so far off the mark, in terms of results and decision-making,” Hussain concluded.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has weighed in on the allegations that India benefited from favorable pitch conditions and scheduling during the T20 World Cup 2024. This discussion was already in the air before the? Semifinal 2 game where eventually India registered a dominant 68-run victory over defending champions England, securing their berth in the final.

Criticism from former England cricketers

Critics, including former England cricketers Michael Vaughan and David Lloyd, have been vocal about what they perceive as advantageous conditions for India. They pointed out that India secured the second semi-final spot and did not play any matches under lights throughout the tournament. These claims gained traction following India’s decisive win over England.

Nasser Hussain’s perspective

In contrast, Nasser Hussain disagreed with this viewpoint. He acknowledged that while the scheduling might have appeared favorable, India’s performance across varied conditions demonstrated their worthiness.

Hussain emphasized that India deserved their place in the final, having maintained an unbeaten record throughout the tournament. He underscored India’s adaptability, citing their victory against Australia on a bouncy pitch in St Lucia and their success on the spin-friendly surface in Guyana. According to Hussain, this adaptability showcased India’s credentials for reaching the final on merit.

“The narrative will be that everything on Thursday was geared towards India reaching the T20 World Cup final â€?the surface, the venue, all seemed to be in their favour. But if you look at things in greater detail, they came into this semi-final against England having just beaten 50-over world champions Australia on a bouncier, good pitch in St Lucia, and reverted to a lower, slower pitch and won comfortably. Fair play to them for the way they played and it feels right that India and South Africa, the two unbeaten sides in the tournament, go head to head in Barbados on Saturday,” Hussain wrote in his column for Daily Mail.

India’s semi-final performance against England

During the semi-final, India posted a challenging total of 171/7, with captain Rohit Sharma contributing 57 runs off 39 balls and Suryakumar Yadav adding 46 runs off 37 balls. These performances stabilized India’s innings after initial setbacks, and late contributions from all-rounders Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel bolstered the score.

In response, England faltered against India’s formidable bowling attack. Axar, Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav led the charge, dismantling England’s batting lineup. The defending champions were bundled out for 103 runs in 16.4 overs, securing India’s place in the final.

The fourth Test match between India and England concluded in Ranchi with a thrilling? victory for?? the hosts by 5 wickets. The intense battle unfolded over four days, showcasing remarkable performances amidst challenging conditions, particularly from emerging talents like Dhruv Jurel and Shoaib Bashir.

Youthful brilliance

Youngsters including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jurel, significantly contributed to India’s success in the series. Despite their relative inexperience at the international level, this young Indian squad led by Rohit Sharma made headlines by defeating England, marking the visitorsâ€?fir?st series loss under the much-talked about Bazball era.

Nasser Hussain’s perspective

Former England cricketer Nasser Hussain has showered praise on India for their well-deserved victory in Ranchi. Hussain emphasized India’s deserving credit for their exceptional skills and mental toughness, especially considering the absence of key players. He highlighted India’s formidable record at home and commended their resilience.

“So I think you do have to give credit to India. Not only the skill they have, but the mental toughness with the players they are missing and have another home series win when their record at home is absolutely phenomenal,” said Hussain while speaking on Sky Sports.

Words of encouragement

While acknowledging England’s defeat, Hussain encouraged the team to focus on areas of improvement rather than feeling disheartened. He identified critical moments in the series, particularly emphasizing the significance of Day 3 in Ranchi.

“There’s no shame in losing to this Indian side…but obviously like with any test series or any test, you look a key areas where you let the game slip, which for me was yesterday (Day 3),” added the former England skipper.
