Former Indian opener Murali Vijay has stirred the pot with his picks for India’s probable 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. His selectio?ns inclu?ded some expected names but also some surprising omissions.

Overall,Vijay’s picks offer a strong squad on paper, but the omission of Sanju and the dual wicket-keeping role for  Rahul are sure to generate discussion and debate.

It’s important to note that this is not the official Indian squad for the T20 World Cup. The final selection will be made by the BCCI selectors on May 1st.

Murali Vijay, one of India’s most underrated opening batters and the star of the 2014-15 Australian test tour, celebrates his 40th birthday today. The Monk of the Indian Cricket team remained in the spotlight on the field with his top-class innings and off the field with his amusing statements and comic stunts. One such incident occurred when he asked Australian legend all-rounder Ellyse Perry for a date.

The incident dates back to 2020, when Vijay was asked during an interview to whom he would choose to g?o for dinner. He took no time in responding and named Perry ?as his partner.

During the lockdown period, Vijay came live on Instagram and joined the Chennai Super Kings session. When he was asked by the anchor whom he would pick for going to dinner, answering the question, he first named Shikhar Dhawan but quickly changed his words and named Australian legend Ellyse Perry for it. “Shikhar Dhawan any day. He is a fun guy. Just that he will speak Hindi and I will be conversing in Tamil. Ellyse Perry! I want to have dinner with her. She is so Beautiful!,” replied Vijay.

Not more than one week after it, a sweet reply came from the Aussie star. In an interview for Sony Sports Network, Perry erupted in joy after she was informed about Murali’s statement and said, “I hope he is paying the bill (laughs). That’s very kind of him. I am flattered.”

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 is in discussions for various reasons, and one among those is if this could be MS Dhoni‘s last IPL appearance. Dhoni’s former CSK teammate and ex-India opener, Murali Vijay, has now come out to urge people not to put pressure on the 41-year-old cricketer and give him space to take the decision. Vijay also slammed the media for co??nstantly fuelling up and inciting retirement talks of Dhoni.

“It’s an individual choice. It’s high time people understand what a cricketer is going through. He’s served our country for about 15 years. So we should be giving him space to take that call, rather than putting pressure by asking when he’s going to retire. It’s very harsh for y’all to ask this question. Everybody is asking about MS’ retirement,” said Vijay while talking to Sportskeeda.

“It is so sad for me to sit and answer it. I have retired recently, so I know how it feels. We have given our heart and soul to this game and it’s a personal choice, and I want to tell people to maintain that little bit of privacy,” he added.

Notably, the Chennai-based franchise are performing well under Dhoni’s leadership in the 16th edition of the league so far and sits at the third position of the points tally. Dhoni has also been performing well for the team, batting lower down the order and has led the side to three wins in five matches.

It is noteworthy that Vijay has been part of the CSK family for ei??ght seasons and he recently retired from all forms of international cricket. The Tamil Nadu cricketer represented India in 61 Tests, 17 ODIs and 9 T20Is.

The first Test match of India versus Australia Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 is currently underway in Nagpur, and the hosts so far have been in good condition courtesy of Rohit Sharma’s brilliant ton.

However, Manjrekar, re-appearing after the break, heaped praises for Vijay and said “we tend to forget the contribution of players like him.”

“He (Rohit) is No. 2 now with eight hundreds when it comes to conversion rates at home. It is a good thing that Murali Vijay is in that list because we tend to forget the contributions that people like him make. 12 Test hundreds �?nine out of them at home and a brilliant conversion rate right at the top,” said Manjrekar after lunch.

In his career, Vijay played 61 Test matches and amassed 3982 runs. The 38-year also represented the country in 17 ODIs and 9 T20Is but majorly excelled in the longest format and got the tag of India’s Test specialist.
