The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed a two-year suspension on Harry Brook to take part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after he pulled out of the 2025 season. T?he ruling, which comes under the newly established with?drawal policy, has raised eyebrows among cricket fans.

Brook, who was bought by Delhi Capitals (DC) for INR 6.25 crore at the IPL 2025 auction, cited his commitments to the England national team as the reason for his withdrawal. However, this marked the second consecutive year he pulled out of the IPL, leading to a strict enforcement of the BCCI’s rule that bars players from participating in two future IPL seasons if they withdraw without a valid reason.

BCCI’s stringent player withdrawal policy and its implications

The BCCI had introduced a strict withdrawal policy ahead of the 2025 IPL auction, ensuring that franchises are not left in a difficult position due to last-minute pullouts. According to this policy, if a player withdraws without a valid reason such as injury or family emergencies, they will face an automatic two-year ban from future IPL auctions and signings. Brook’s withdrawal initiated this rule, and he will be disqualified to play IPL 2026 and IPL 2027.

This choice has had serious repercussions for Delhi, who had recruited Brook to bolster their middle order after the loss of Rishabh Pant. His sudden departure left a huge void in DC’s batting department, compelling them to have to find a replacement mere days out from the start of the tournament. Brook’s absence has also inflicted financial harm, with the INR 6.25 crore they invested in him available to spend on another game-changer in the auction.

Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid defend BCCI’s decision against Harry Brook

Several players, including Brook’s England teammates Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, have supported the BCCI’s decision, emphasizing that players must take responsibility for their commitments.  Speaking on the Beard Before Cricket podcast, Moeen Ali, who will play for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), stated that he believes the ban is fair, as Brook’s withdrawal disrupted Delhi Capitals’ team strategy and auction plans. He mentioned that a number of players in the past have pulled out of the IPL and then come back to get better financial offers, which can be unjust to the franchises.

“It’s not harsh. I kind of agree with it, in a way, because a lot of people have done this before, and they end up coming back and getting a better financial package. It messes things up for teams when a player suddenly pulls out, and it’s unfair to franchises who invest heavily in certain players,” Moeen said.

Rashid also shared similar views, stating that the rule was already established prior to the auction, and Brook was well aware of the repercu??ssions of pulling out. He added further that the IPL is a very important tournament, and when one player withdraws without a valid reason, it hurts not only the team but also the reputation of the league. Both players stressed that this rule needs to be implemented in or??der to uphold fairness and accountability among cricketers playing in franchise leagues.

“This rule was already in place before the auction. Every player who puts their name in the IPL auction is aware that if they pull out, they will be banned for two years. So, Brook knew the consequences beforehand. I don’t think it’s harsh—it’s just the way the system works,” Rashid said.

The fate of the final IPL 2024 playoff spot hangs in the balance as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lock horns with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a do-or-die encounter at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium i??n Bengaluru.

CSK opts to bowl first, makes one change

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and elected to field first, looking to capitalize on their bowling strength. They made a single change to their playing XI, bringing in Mitchell Santner for Moeen Ali, who has returned home for England duty.

“We’ll bowl first. The wicket looks good, conditions are overcast and we will look to make the most of the movement in the first 2-3 overs. It looks a bit damp, but we’ll go with great intent. Every game in the IPL is must win, nothing changes for us, we’ll take it ball-by-ball, try and win the small processes. We’ve won some crucial games to go ahead of the pack in the middle. Just one change – Moeen isn’t available, Santner replaces him,” said Gaikwad at the toss.

RCB makes one change for crucial match

RCB, needing a big win to secure a playoff berth, brought in Glenn Maxwell to replace Will Jacks, who has also returned to England.

“We would have fielded as well, but we put up a good score when we batted first last. Losing the toss isn’t ideal, but we’ll take a lot of confidence from the last 5 games. The set-up is great, last match before the knock-out stage, the scenario is nicely set up and we’re happy to play our last league game in front of our fans. Not thinking a lot, we’ll take it as it comes and do our best,” said Du Plessis.

The eagerly anticipated third installment of The Hundred 2023 kicked off on August 1 in England. This dynamic cricket competition showcases eight vibrant teams: Oval Invincibles, Northern Superchargers, Manchester Originals, Welsh Fire, London Spirit, Birmingham Phoenix, Trent Rockets, and Southern Brave. The inception of The Hundred was initiated by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2020, with a multifaceted vision. It aimed to provide the young talents of the nation an extraordinary platform to test their mettle against the best players globally. Simultaneously, the tournament aimed to attract substantial investments to foster the growth and development of cricket in the United Kingdom (UK).

Players from various regions around the globe are participating in the Men’s Hundred 2023. However, there are also several international players who have joined the competition as overseas talents.

Here are the four players, who won the IPL 2023 trophy with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) earlier this year, are playing in the Men’s Hundred right now:

1. Ben Stokes, Northern Superchargers

England’s iconic cricketer and talismanic figure, Ben Stokes has been selected for the Northern Superchargers (NOS) in the Men’s Hundred 2023 tournament. Renowned for his exceptional skills and contributions to the sport, Stokes’ name carries significant weight in the cricketing world. Despite his formidable reputation, Stokes has yet to make a substantial impact in The Hundred, a tournament that he missed in both the 2021 and 2022 editions due to injury and a packed schedule.

England’s red-ball skipper cricketing journey has been nothing short of eventful in recent months. He participated in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), followed by leading the England cricket team in a one-off Test match against Ireland. Subsequently, he played a pivotal role in the grueling five-match Ashes 2023 series. Given the intensity of his recent engagements, Stokes announced his intention to take a well-deserved vacation following the con??clusion of The Ashes.

Amidst this context, the NOS  have taken the decision to appoint Wayne Parnell as their captain for the tournament. While it remains unclear whether Stokes will participate in any matches during the competition, he has officially been included in the Superchargers squad. Interestingly, Stokes was notably absent from the team’s opening match against the Birmingham Phoenix, which unfortunately had to be abandoned due? to rain.

2. Moeen Ali, Birmingham Phoenix

Moeen Ali‘s journey in the cricketing arena has been nothing short of noteworthy, characterized by his significant contributions to various teams and formats. Earlier this year, he played a pivotal role in the championship victory of the CSK in the cash-rich league. Ali’s all-round abilities, both with the bat and the ball, proved to be crucial for CSK, as he consistently delivered important runs and essential wickets under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

Following his successful stint with CSK , Ali was poised for a well-deserved break. Nevertheless, a twist in his cricketing journey emerged when the England team management extended a request for him to come out of retirement and participate in The Ashes 2023. Respon??ding to the call, the off-spin bowling all-rounder agr??eed to step back onto the international stage and participated in The Ashes series.

After the conclusion of The A?shes, the right-arm off spinner made a clear statement regarding his future in the red-ball format. He confirmed that he would not be returning to play in red-ball cricket again.

In the realm of the Men’s Hundred 2023 tournament, the veteran cricketer occupies the role of captain for the Birmingham Phoenix (BPH) team. Nonetheless, his participation in the first fixture against the Superchargers was hampered by a groin injur??y that he sustained during the final Ashes 2023 test at The Oval.

In Ali’s absence, the captaincy duties for the side were shouldered by Benny Howell for the opening fixture.

3. Mitchell Santner, Southern Brave

Mitchell Santner

Mitchell Santner, the versatile cricketer from New Zealand, has been making the most of the extended break for the Blackcaps team by participating in various T20 leagues around the world. With his international commitments on hold, ??Santner has been actively engagin??g in cricketing action across different leagues.

In the IPL 2023, Santner was seen donning the jersey of the CSK, contributing his skills to their campaign. After that, the left-arm spinner cricketing journey took him to the United States of America (USA), where he joined the Texas Super Kings (TSK) in the Major League Cricket (MLC). Displaying his prowess as an all-rounder, Santner showcased hi??s abilities in yet another cricketing environment.

Continuing his journey, Santner is now in the United Kingdom, representing the Southern Brave (SOB) team in the third edition of the Men’s Hundred 2023. Under the captaincy of James Vince, Santner has been an integral part of the Brave’s setup, bringing his multifaceted skills to the field. Although he was not included in the playing eleven for the Brave’s first game against Trent Rockets (TRT), his presence on the bench underscores his role as a? valuable asset to the team.

Similarly, in the subsequent match against Welsh Fire (WEF), Santner once again found himself on the bench, awaiting the opportunity to contribute to the Southern Brave’s campaign in the Men’s Hundred.

4. Devon Conway, Southern Brave

Devon Conway, a notable wicket-keeper batter from New Zealand, is an essential part of the SOB squad. His cricketing journey has entwined with that of Santner, as they have shared dressing rooms in various ??leagues and have been teammates in both the New Zealand cricket team and different T20 league??s.

Their camaraderie has been witne??ssed in franc?hises like CSK and TSK in the IPL and MLC, respectively.

However, the beginning of his journey in the Men’s Hundred has presented its challenges. Despite his consistent track record, Conway faced a setback in the first two matches of the tournament. Scoring 16 against TRT and 4 against WEF, the southpaw’s start in the competition has not mirrored his usual form. Nonetheless, as an experienced player, he will likely work to bounce back and make valuable contributions to the Brave’s campaign in the tournament.

England all-rounder Moeen Ali has made it clear that he will not change his decision to retire from Test cricket. Despite the plea from England’s head coach, Brendon McCullum, Moeen remains steadfast in his resolve.

The 36-year-old cricketer, known for his prowess with both bat and ball, announced his Test retirement on the last day of the recently-concluded Ashes series. Moeen w??ill focus on playing in limited-overs games and would like to spend more time with his family.

The right-hander was especially magnificent in the 5th Ashes Test as he picked up three crucial wickets in the fourth innings, guiding England to a 43-run ?victor??y.

Now, with England scheduled to tour India for a Test series as a part of the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, McCullum reached out to Moeen, ?hoping to convince him to reconsider his retirement and join the squad.

Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, Ali revealed that he told McCullum there’s no way he’ll be going to India.

“They knew from the start. Especially when those India venues came out! Baz asked me again when I had my day off on the second day. I said no. I’m not going [to India]. There’s no way I’m going. That’s me done. It’s nice to finish like this and be part of an amazing day,” said the Birmingham-born cricketer.

No regrets about his Test career

Moeen, who featured in 68 Tests for England, has left an indelible mark on the game with his impressive all-round performances. Scoring over 3000 r?uns and taking? more than 200 wickets in the longest format, he has been a valuable asset to the team.

His performances against India have been particularl??y noteworthy, claiming 55 wickets against the Asian ??giants, including two 5-wicket hauls. In the 6 Tests played in India, he has managed to pick up 18 wickets, showcasing his effectiveness on the subcontinent pitches.

As he reflects on his Test career, Moeen emphasizes that ??he has no regrets despite i??ts ups and downs. He expressed his delight in concluding his Test journey at The Oval, where England levelled the Ashes series 2-2.

Moeen shared his thoughts, saying,“I still don’t believe I have done that well, but it was great to finish like this. It was daunting, but I had nothing to lose, it was a free hit. I had a call from Baz and Stokesy, I felt like I was bowling alright, but the finger was the only issue. I wasn’t worried about the bowling.”

The loss of Moeen?? in the Test format is undoubtedly a significant blow to England. Over the years, Moeen has played a crucial role ??as a spinning all-rounder and has been a valuable asset to the team in Test cricket.

His absence on the Indian tour may require England to reassess their options and find suitable repl??acements to fill the void left by the experienced all-rounder.

England all-rounder Moeen Ali bid farewell to his Test career after the thrilling conclusion of the fifth and final Ashes 2023 Test against Australia, which ended in a dramatic win for th??e hosts, resulting in a series draw of 2-2. Notably, the tourists had won the first two Tests and were leading the series 2-0 before England bounced back? and drawn the series.

A text message that changed it all

Moeen’s return to Test cricket came about unexpectedly when he received a text message from captain Ben Stokes at the start of the series that simply read ‘Ashes?’. Initially retired from the longest format of the game since 2021, Moeen found himself contemplating the opportunity to don the whites again and represent his country on the grand stage of the Ashes series.

Despite some hesitation and uncertainty, the allure of the Ashes proved too tempting to resist. With the left-arm spinner Jack Leach sidelined due to a stress fracture of the back, England needed a seasoned all-rounder to step up, and Moeen decide?d to answer the call of duty. He embraced the challenge with determination, recognizing the ??significance of the historic rivalry and the opportunity to make a difference on the field once more.

Making an impact on his return

While his comeback began amidst mixed emotions, Moeen’s performances on the field spoke volumes about his talent and experience. Though he missed the Lord’s Test due to a finger injury, he returned to play a pivotal role in the remaining four matches of the series.

With the bat, Moeen showed resilience and composure, adding valuable runs (180) to England’s total in crucial moments. His contributions were not limited to batting alone; as a bowler, he weaved his magic and claimed essential wickets (9), none more significant than the three vital dismissals on the final day of the fifth Test.

A farewell decision and humorous vows

Following the conclusion of The Oval Test and the Ashes series, Moeen made a definitive announcement of his retirement. As he reflected on his journey and the rollercoaster of emotions that accompanied his return to the format, Moeen humorously declared that he wouldn’t respond to any more messages from Stokes pertaining to a potential comeback. Speaking to Sky Sports, he jokingly stated “I know I’m done. If Stokesy [Ben Stokes] messages me again then I’m going to delete it. That’s me done. ‘I think I really enjoyed it and it’s great to finish like that.”

Despite the initial apprehensions, his decision to come back turned out to be an enriching experience, both personally and professionally. He savored every moment on the field, contributing to the team’s success, and feeling the camaraderie and spirit that the Ashes series embodies.

“It feels amazing. To come back was obviously a little bit daunting because I’ve never played that well against Australia and it was one of those things when Stokesy asked me I thought: “Why not, I’m going to go into a brillant side and I still believe I can do alright,” and it’s just great to be back part of this amazing team,” he added.
