Australia have announced their playing XI for the upcoming fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground, starting January 03. Interestingly, Australian selectors have made the decision to drop all-rounder Mitchell Marsh from the playing XI, making way for the talented T?asmanian all-rounder.

Mitchell Marsh struggled with the form in BGT 2024-25

Notably, Marsh, the reign?ing Allan Border Medal winner, has had a challenging series against India, managing only 73 runs over seven innings with an average of 10.42. His highest contribution was 47 in the first Test in Perth, with his form dipping significantly thereafter.

Marsh’s struggles with the bat were compounded by his limited impact with the ball, having bowled just 13 overs without taking a wicket in the last three Tests. This performance led to a clamour among fans and pundits alike for a change in the squad.

Australian captain Pat Cummins confirmed the development at a press briefing on Thursday, expressing both disappoi?ntment and optimism regarding the?? change.

“Mitchy obviously hasn’t quite got the runs and wickets he would have liked this series. It’s a shame for Mitchy because we know how much he brings to the team, but we feel like now it’s a good week for Beau to get a chance,” Cummins stated.

Tasmanian star to replace Marsh in the final XI

Beau Webster, who has been in fine form in domestic cricket, has been called in to replace Marsh. Averaging 57.1 with the bat and taking 81 wickets at 31.7 in first-class cricket since March 2022, Webster is set to become Australia’s 469th Test cricketer. His versatility as a player who can both bowl pace and spin has likely contributed to his selection

The decision to include Webster comes at a crucial juncture as Australia seek to win back the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which has been in India’s possession since the 2014-15 series. With the series currently standing at 2-1 in favor of Australia, the SCG Test could determine the series’ winner. A win or draw for Australia would see them reclaim the trophy for the first time in nearly a decade.

Mitchell Marsh has expressed his strategic approach to facing Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the third Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. With Bumrah’s remarkable performance in the first two Tests, where he took 12 wickets, Marsh’s insights provide an intriguing glimpse into the mindset required to tackle one of cricket’s most formidable bowlers.

The challenge of Jasprit Bumrah

In the lead-up to the third Test, Marsh acknowledged Bumrah’s status as potentially the best bowler in the world. Bumrah’s statistics from the series underscore this claim, particularly his eight wickets in the first Test at Perth, which contributed significantly to India’s 295-run victory. Marsh, w?ho has yet to be dismissed by Bumrah in this series, emphasized the need for batters to adopt a proactive mentality rather than merely surviving against such a skilled opponent.

I think when you have the best bowler in the world and you are just trying to see him off he is going to have one with your name on it. I think it is about applying pressure with your own method and taking the challenge on. We know right now he’s probably the best bowler in the world. It’s just about getting up for that challenge. It’s a big series. You want to take the best in the world on. That is certainly my mentality. (I) look forward to facing him again,” Marsh stated in a pre match press conference.

Mitchell Marsh’s tactical approach towards Bumrah

Marsh’s strategy involves a blend of caution and aggression. He believed that applying pressure through individual methods is crucial when facing elite bowlers like Bumrah, highlighting that each player must find their own rhythm and approach while batting. This perspective reflects a broader understanding of cricket dynamics, where adapting to the game situation is vital. The Australian all-rounder also pointed out that different players have unique batting styles and strategies.

Everyone has their own plans and we all bat differently so (it’s about) the situation in the game. Sometimes you have to get through a spell and sometimes it is time to attack. We have guys in our batting lineup who just play differently,” Marsh Added. This adaptability ?is essential for A??ustralia as they face one of the strongest bowling attacks in international cricket.

Moving forward: The importance of momentum

Marsh stressed that moving the game forward is critical when confronting top-tier bowling. He remarked on his own clear methodo??logy developed over the past 18 months, indicating a commitment to maintaining this approach against Bumrah and other bowlers. His performance in Perth, where he scored 47 runs in a challenging situation, exemplifies this mentality of resilience and determination.

“Getting through your own way and moving the game forward is really important when you are facing one of the best attacks in the world. I think I have had a really clear method over the last 18 months with the way I have gone about it. That will continue,” the all-rounder concluded.

The ongoing five match series has been alive so far with both teams showing their potential to the fullest. After facing a disappointing defeat in the first Test, Australia made a remarkable comeback. They handed a 10-wicket defeat to India in the Pink Ball Test in Adelaide. Now both sides will face each other in the next game which wi?ll take place at?? the iconic Gabba, Brisbane.

A contentious Decision Review System (DRS) call by third umpire Richard Kettleborough during the second day of the Pink Ball Test in Adelaide ignited widespread criticism from fans, commentators, and Team India. The incident occurred late in the first session when Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin appeared to trap Australian batter Mitchell Marsh lbw.

3rd umpire cites inconclusive evidence

Ashwin was confident in his appeal, convincing captain Rohit Sharma to review the on-field umpire’s not-out decision. Initial replays showed Marsh attempting to defend a delivery while advancing down the track, with the ball seemingly striking the pad before an inside edge was evident. However, the third umpire cited inconclusive evidence based on the Snicko and promptly upheld the on-field call without proceeding to b??all-tracking.

Replays show a different story

Later replays, including a zoomed-in version, suggested the ball had indeed hit Marsh’s pad first. This revelation left commentators baffled as to why the third umpire had not used ball-tracking technology to confirm the trajectory and likelihood of the ball ?hitting the stumps.

The abrupt ?decision-making process drew ire from fans and cricket pundits alike, as they questioned the lack of thorough analysis in such a critical moment. The Indian c?amp looked visibly displeased, and social media erupted with reactions condemning the third umpire’s judgment.

As the anticipation builds for the second Test between Australia and India at the iconic Adelaide Oval, all eyes are on all-rounder Mitchell Marsh. After struggling in the first Test in Perth due to niggles, his potential return is a? significant talking point as Australia seek to rebound from a disheartening 295-run defeat in the series opener. The team is eager to put their Perth woes behind them and reignite their campaign against a strong Indian side.

Mitchell Marsh gives update on his fitness

Marsh is back and ready to make his mark. He in an interview with News Nine confidently declared, “The body’s all good, yep. I’m good to go,” signaling his readiness to contribute to Australia’s efforts in this crucial match.

His return comes at a pivotal moment for Australia, who are under pressure after their significant loss in Perth. Marsh’s all-around capabilities—both with bat and ball—are expected to provide much-needed balance to the Australian lineup. The conditions in Adelaide, known for favouring seam and swing under lights, could play into Marsh’s strengths as he looks to exploit any weaknesses in the Indian batting order. In the previous encounter, Australia’s batting lineup struggled against India’s formidable bowling attack led by Jasprit Bumrah, who turned the tide of the first Test with remarkable figures of 5/30 and 3/42. Marsh’s experience and skill will be crucial as Australia aim to regain control of the series.

Analysing the Adelaide pitch before the Pink Ball showdown

The Adelaide pitch is expected to be lively, offering assistance to seam bowlers and creating challenges for batters. Historically, Australia have an impressive record in Day-Night Tests at this venue, having never lost one since its inception. This adds an extra layer of pressure on both teams as they prepare for a match that could define the series. Australia’s wicketkeeper Alex Carey emphasized that while they respect India’s capabilities, they are focused on executing their game plan rather than dwelling on past performances. “We have a process and a plan that we try to execute,” Carey stated in a press conference, i?ndicating a shift in mindset fo?llowing their heavy defeat.

As Australia gear up for this crucial encounter starting December 6, the stakes couldn’t be higher. With Marsh back in action and the team determined to bounce back, fans can expect an electrifying contest. The psychological aspect of bouncing back from such a heavy defeat will be just as important as the tactical adjustments made by both teams.

Marsh’s presence is likely to inject energy and confidence into a side eager to put their Perth woes behind them. As they prepare for battle under the lights of Adelaide Oval, all eyes will be on how well Australia can adapt and respond against a resilient Indian side that has shown they are more than capable of capitalizing on any mistakes.

Australia‘s preparations for the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar series against India have been shaken by fitness concerns surrounding all-rounder Mitchell Marsh. Notably, Marsh, who bowled 17 overs in the first Test at Perth—his heaviest bowling workload in three years—was left sore after the home team’s 295-run defeat.

Mitchell Marsh likely to feature only as a batter for Adeliade Test

Head coach Andrew McDonald acknowledged Marsh’s limited preparation, noting the absence of Cameron Green, who was ruled out of the series due to a stress fracture in his back. It is possible Marsh may retain his place in the playing XI for the pink-ball Test in Adelaide but feature as a specialist batter. This would, however, add strain to the frontline pacers, especia?lly with the Brisbane Test beginning just four days after the conclusion of the Adelaide match.

Tasmanian all-rounder earns maiden call-up

To bolster their squad, Cricket Australia has called up Tasmanian all-rounder Beau Webster for the day-night Test, scheduled to begin on December 6. Webster’s inclusion comes despite earlier state??ments from McDonald indicat??ing no changes to the 13-member squad.

The 30-year-old has been in sensational form in domestic cricket. Last season, he became only the second player in Sheffield Shield history, after Sir Garfield Sobers, to amass over 900 runs and take 30 wickets in a single season. This year, Webster has already scored 448 runs at an average of 56, alongside 16 wickets in first-class cricket. His recent performances against the touring India A team, which included unbeaten scores of 61 and 46 co??upled with two three-wicket hauls, further underscored his all-round prowess.

The hosts aim to rebound after Perth defeat

After suffering a heavy 295-run loss in the series opener at Perth, Australia will be eager to bounce back in the pink-ball Test at Adelaide. The defeat highlighted several areas of concern for the Australian team, most notably their bowling depth and batting consistency. Despite a spirited fight from Travis Head, who was one of the few Australian players to show resilience with the bat, the hosts struggled to counter India’s potent attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah. The hosts must be hoping to address the issues and adapt to the ?chall?enging conditions of the Adelaide Test, where the pink ball and twilight conditions will add a new layer of complexity to the contest.

The first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 between Australia and India got off to a dramatic start at the Optus Stadium in Perth. India, led by stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah, opted to bat first after wi?nning the toss but faced a challenging day as both teams fo?ught hard under bowling friendly conditions.

KL Rahul’s stunning catch to dismiss Mitchell Marsh

The moment of the day came during Australia’s first innings when KL Rahul pulled off a stunning low catch to remove Mitchell Marsh. The dismissal happened in the 16th over, bowled by Mohammed Siraj.

Siraj delivered a peach of a delivery that straightened after angling in, forcing Marsh into an awk?ward defensive shot. The ball?? took a thick edge and seemed to be dying en route to the slips. Rahul, stationed at third slip, dived low to his left to grab it.

While the catch was contested due to its proximity to the ground, repla?ys showed Rahul’s fingers under the ball, prompting the third umpire to uphold the on-field decision. The effort saw Marsh leaving the field for 6 after facing 19 deliveries.

Here’s the video:

After Marsh, Australia also lost the key wickets of Marnus Labuschagne and Pa??t?? Cummins.

India’s batting struggles

Earlier in the day, India’s decision to bat first on a lively Perth surface backfired as the team struggled against Australia’s pace attack. Josh Hazlewood was the standout bowler, claiming figures of 4/29, while Mitchell Starc and skipper Cummins chipped in with two wickets each.

The Indian innings folded for 150, with young debuta?nt Nitish Kumar Reddy top-scoring with a gritty 41, supported by a patient 37 from Rishabh Pant. The rest of the batting lineup failed to make significant contributions, succumbing to disciplined Australian bowling and the challeng?ing pitch conditions.

Australia’s batting in trouble

India’s bowlers, led by Bumrah, ensured that their team stayed in the contest. His fiery spell of 4/17 ripped through the Australian top order, reducing the hosts to a precarious 67/7 by stumps.

Alex Carey (19) and Starc (6) were the two unbeaten batters at the close of play, as Australia trail India by 83 runs. Mohammed Siraj and debutant Harshit Rana also contributed with tight spells, adding to Australia’s woes.
