The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) witnessed a heartwarming moment on the field as Mehidy Hasan, the captain of Khulna Tigers, had a special gesture for Chittagong King’s Tom O’Connell at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. The incident received widespread app??reciation in the cricketin??g community.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz shows true sportsmanship 

The incident happened as Khulna Tigers were playing against Chittagong Kings and the latter were chasing down a total of 204 runs. Haider Ali was dismissed by Mohammad Nawaz which gave way for the arrival of the Australian batter O’Connell on the crease. But his arrival took longer than anticipated. Puzzled and frustrated at wasting time, Hasan appealed for a time-out dismissal to O’Connell. The field umpire gave the decision in favour of the Tigers but upon re-visiting h??is decision, the Tigers�?skipper Hasan decided to withdraw his appeal. O’Connell had alre?ady returned to the pavilion and was called back on the crease to bat for the Kings.

However, O’Connell failed to take advantage of a grace opportunity from Tigers as the Australian batter was dismissed on a golden duck by Mohammad Nawaz who gave a stellar performance for his team with the bowl. The incident revealed the true sportsperson spirit of Hasan. Had the Tigers skipper not withdrawn his appeal, O’Connell would’ve been the first batter in BPL history to have been dismissed in this manner.

The only other incident of this sort in international cricket was when Angelo Matthews was sent back to the pavilion during ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 in a match against Bangladesh when skipper Shakib Al-Hasan enforced the decision against the Sri Lanka?n batter.

Khulna Tigers dominated Chittagong Kings to win their first match in BPL 2024-25

Khulna Tigers had put a mammoth total on board for Chittagong Kings to chase. Will Bosisto’s unbeaten 75-run knock was the highlight of the Tigers�?batting effort. Contributions from Mahidul Islam Ankon and Mohammad Naim played a crucial role for the home side to put 203 runs on-board.

In response, Chittagong King’s effort with the bat was disappointing. Shamim Hossain tried to stabilise the Kings run-chase with a courageous 78-run knock but continuous fall of wickets from the other end and a hug??e total from Tigers proved out to be too much for the middle-order batter. In the end, Kings were bowled out for 166 in 18.5 overs. Thus, Tigers won the match by 37 runs.

Rutherford, demonstrating lightning-quick reflexes, moved swiftly to his right, collected the ball, and unleashed a direct hit at the striker’s end with only one stump in sight.

Despite the initial uncertainty among the Windies fielders, Rutherford’s confidence paid off when the third umpire confirmed that Mehidy’s bat was on the crease but not behind it when the bails were dislodged. The skipper’s impressive knock of 77 off 73 balls, featuring eight fours and two sixes, came to an unfortunate end.

On Monday, December 2, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) unveiled the national squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies, set to begin on December 8. All the matches will take place at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts. This announcement comes after careful consideration of the team’s composition and player availability, with significant changes to the lineup.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz to lead Bangladesh in ODIs

Mehidy Hasan Miraz will continue his leadership role in the Bangladesh cricket team, having been appointed as captain for the ODI series. He will be leading the side for the first time in the 50-over format, following the absence of regular captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who is sidelined due to a groin injury. The BCB confirmed that Shanto’s recovery is still underway, and as a result, Miraz will take charge of the team for the upcoming series.

“All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz will now lead the Bangladesh side in ODIs for the first time in the absence of Najmul Hossain Shanto who is still recovering from a groin injury,” BCB said in a statement.

Injuries and player absences

Several key players will miss out on the ODI series due to injuries or form concerns. Physician Monzur Hossain Chowdhury con??firmed that Towhid Hridoy is currently dealing with a medical issue in his right groin, which requires rest. Hridoy’s condition will be reassessed in two weeks to determine his readiness for futu?re matches.

“Hridoy had complained of pain in his right groin region and subsequent investigations have confirmed the presence of a medical condition. He has been advised rest and we will reassess him in two weeks to determine his readiness to play,” added BCB Sports Physician Hossain Chowdhury.

In addition to Hridoy and Shanto, several other players were omitted from the squad. Mushfiqur Rahim and Zakir Hasan were also not selected for the series. Hasan, in particular, was dropped due to a lack of form, as confirmed by the BCB, “Fellow left-hander Zakir Hasan, who was in the team in last month’s ODI series against Afghanistan in the UAE, has been dropped,” BCB said in the statement.

Additionally fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman will not be the part of the squad due to family emergency.

The BCB also revealed a mix of returning players and fresh faces in the squad. One notable inclusion is Parvez Hossain Emon, who is set to make his ODI debut. Alongside Emon, several other players will rejoin the squad, including the experienced wicketkeeper-batter Liton Das, who has been recalled after a period of absence. The squad also sees the return of allrounder Atif Hossain Dhrubo, right-arm fast bowler Hasan Mahmud and medium fast bowler Tanzim Hasan Shakib. These changes refl??ect the team’s efforts to build a competitive squad, balancing new talent with seasoned players to take on the West Indies in the upcoming series.
