The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 is witnessing another thrilling contest as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are taking on Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 14th match of the tournament. Both teams are desperate for a victory to?? strengthen their position in the points table, making this clash a high-stakes battle.

RCB, led by Smriti Mandhana, are looking to bounce back after a few inconsistent performances, while Meg Lanning’s DC aimed to maintain their dominance in the tournament. The intense match had several standout moments, but one that grabbed the spotlight was Ellyse Perry’s stunning catch to?? dismiss th??e opposition skipper.

Ellyse Perry ends Meg Lanning’s stay at the crease with a brilliant catch

The moment of brilliance came in the second over of Delhi’s innings when Renuka Singh delivered ??a?? full-length inswinger that troubled Lanning. The DC captain, looking to assert her authority, attempted to loft the ball down the ground. However, the ball took the inside half of the bat and lobbed towards mid-on.

Standing at the position, Perry showcased her exceptional fielding skills by timing her? jump to perfection and grabbing the ball mid-air. The one-handed overhead catch stunned both Lanning and the spectators, who erupted in applause. The moment not only sent the experienced batter back t??o the pavilion early but also provided RCB with a significant breakthrough in the powerplay.

This exceptional fielding effort by Perry once again highlighted why she remains one of the most athletic and reliable players in world cricket. Her quick reflexes and anticipation made the dismissal look effortless, b?ut it was a moment of sheer brilliance that changed the course of the game.

Shabnim Ismail erupted in a fierce celebration after she dismissed Meg Lanning in a dramatic moment during Match 2 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC).

Shabnim Ismail’s persistence pays off as she rattles Meg Lanning’s stumps

Lanning, who had endured a testing period at the crease, survived several plays-and-misses, a couple of edges, and even a ?dropped catch, but Ismail refused to be denied. Charging in with relentless pace and aggression, Ismail in the sixth over produced a delivery that was full, fast, and arrowed in straight towards the off stump. By this point, the initial swing that troubled batters had subsided, but Ismail’s sheer speed and accuracy did the trick. Lanning, attempting to play across the line, completely misread the delivery, resulting in the ball crashing into her off stump.

As soon as the bails went flying, Ismail erupted in a fierce celebration, roaring in triumph as she had finally conquered one of the world’s best batters. Lanning, visibly disappointed, walked back after scoring 15 off 19 balls, which included three crisp boundaries. Her departure left Delhi at 60/2 in 6.1 overs, bringing a crucial breakthrough for Ismail and her team.

Batting first after losing the toss, Mumbai posted 164 in 19.1 overs, largely thanks to a spectacular knock from Nat Sciver-Brunt (80 off 59). Her innings was a mix of calculated aggression, as she smashed 13 boundaries while maintaining a strike rate of 135.59. Mumbai suffered an early blow as Hayley Matthews fell for a duck in the first over, followed by Yastika Bhatia (11 off 9) in the powerplay. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur injected momentum with a brisk 42 off 22, hitting four fours and three sixes before falling to Annabel Sutherland. However, MI’s lower order crumbled, losing six wickets for just 35 runs.

Chasing 165, Delhi Capitals Women got off to a blazing start thanks to Shafali Verma’s explosive 43 off 18 balls. Her blitz propelled DC to 60/1 in 5.5 overs, before Ismail removed Lanning (15 off 19) to slow down the momentum. The middle-order stumbled, with Jemimah Rodrigues (2), Annabel Sutherland (13) and Alice Capsey (16) falling cheaply. At 109/5 in 14.5 overs, D?elhi was in trouble.

This is when Niki Prasad (35 off 33) and Sarah Bryce (21 off 10) stitched a 31-run partnership, keeping DC in the hunt. Despite losing wickets in the final overs, Radha Yadav (9 off 4) and Arundhati Reddy (2 off 1) scrambled across t?he line on the last ball.

For Delhi Capitals (DC), the Women’s Premier League (WPL) has been a story of dominance in the league stage but heartbreak in the final. With back-to-back final heartbreaks fueling their hunger, Delhi will be keen to make WPL 2025 the year they finally lift the trophy.

Under Meg Lanning’s leadership, the team has already showcased their ability to dominate the league stage, but the real challenge lies in delivering under pressure when it matters the most. In WPL 2023, they fell short against Mumbai Indians (MI), and in 2024, they were outplayed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Despite these setbacks, captain Lanning remains optimistic t?hat a few ??minor adjustments can help them finally clinch the elusive title in 2025.

Meg Lanning’s plan for success in WPL 2025

Reflecting on DC’s performances, Lanning acknowledged that while they have played excellent cricket, the key to success lies in fine-tuning their approach rather than overhauling strategies. She further emphasized small tactical changes rather than drastic shifts in approach

“We’ve had two good seasons without obviously being able to finish it off the way we would have liked in winning the title. The key for us is maintaining what we’ve been doing well. We think we have been playing some really good cricket and doing a lot of things right. “We’re just evolving and making a few little changes here and there that we think will make a big difference, and hopefully allow us to take that next step. It’s not [a] big shift from us,” Lanning was quoted as saying by the ESPNcricinfo.

Strengthening the squad for 2025

Delhi will launch their campaign ag??ainst defending champions Mumbai?? on February 15 in Vadodara. With new additions to the squad and existing players improving, Lanning believed Delhi is in a strong position heading into WPL 2025.

“We’ve added some new players, and also the players who have been here previously have also improved and gotten better as well. We feel like we’re in a really good spot. It’s not about changing too much. We’ve been doing a lot right. It’s just some small things here and there to take us to the next step,” Lanning concluded.

Delhi’s core squad remains strong, with key players Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Alice Capsey, Marizanne Kapp, and Jess Jonassen continuing to be pivotal in their WPL ca??mpaigns. However, DC has also looked to strengthen its bench strength and add depth to ensure they have all bases covered for the next edition.

Australia skipper Meg Lanning had a great start to 2023 as she first led her nation to their record eighth ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title and then went on to finish as the highest run scorer of the maiden Women’s Premier League. It was due to Lanning’s sensational performance and leadership only that the Delhi Capitals (DC) reached the WPL final. However, De?lhi lost the summit clash to eventual champions Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Brabourne Stadium.

Notably, WPL was the first-ever event to be started for women cricketers at such a grand level, and the Indian league has now become a big hit with its worldwide exposure. The tournament was watched globally by cricket enthusiasts marking a new beginning for women’s cricket. With prominent players participating in the WPL, it has also opened the doors for young women athletes to gain experience and improve their game.

Speaking about the success of the WPL on the BBC podcast Stumped, Lanning shed light on the impact of the tournament other than its financial aspect. She talked about how WPL will speed up the competition and grow the standards of women’s cricket on a global level.

“One of the things we talk about a lot in the Australian team is trying to have an impact on the global stage. We play the game because we love it and we want to keep improving it and carry on growing the game,” said Lanning.

“Tournaments like this (WPL) will speed that up a fair bit. As an Australian team we think it is important the global game is growing. It is not just about us winning all the time. We want to win all the time. There’s no doubt about that, but there is more at play that just that,” she added.

Lanning has succe?ssfully led Australia to four T20 World Cups, one ODI World Cup, three Ashes and the 2022 Commonwealth Games triumph in the past few years, which makes her the most decorated captain in the history of cricket.

The Aussie skipper even expressed her desire to play more cricket and stated: “I can’t see any reason why I can’t play for four or five more years, it is just whether that is something I want to do. I haven’t thought too much. But especially with new opportunities like the WPL coming up, you really want to be part of that.”

“It’s a very proud moment for me, firstly to be involved with Delhi Capitals and then to lead them. It’s about enjoying yourself, and getting the best out of yourself. WPL is a massive moment for the sport, it’s the logical next step and makes a lot of sense. Cricket in India is people’s lives, and the fact that WPL is up and running, and to be involved in something like this, is amazing. It’s only going to grow in the coming years,” said Lanning in an official statement.

Not to mention, Lanning is the third Australian player to lead a WPL side. Before her, Beth Mooney was named Gujarat Giants’ captain, while Alyssa Healy was appointed UP Warriorz’ skipper. When it comes to other sides, Mumbai Indians will?? be captained by Harmanp?reet Kaur, and Royal Challengers Bangalore will be led by Smriti Mandhana.

Australia Women captain Meg Lanning is set to miss the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) with Melbourne Stars as she continues her indefini??te break from the game. Notably, after leading Australia to Commonwealth Games Gold in Birmingham, Lanning last month announced she was stepping away from cricket.

“After a busy couple of years, I’ve made the decision to take a step back to enable me to spend time focusing on myself. I’m grateful for the support of CA and my teammates and ask that my privacy is respected during this time,” Lanning said in a statement.

In the absence of Lanning, the Stars will need to find a new captain for their campaign, which starts on October 15 against Brisbane Heat. Earlier this year, Lanning had handed over the captaincy of Victoria to Sophie Molineux.

“Melbourne Stars Captain Meg Lanning will continue her indefinite break from cricket and will not play in WBBL|08. The club respects her decision and asks that her privacy continue to be respected,” Stars said in a release.

Not to mention, Lan?ning is the biggest name and most reliable performer in the WBBL. In 54 WBBL matches across four seasons, she has amassed 1,805 runs at an average of 41.97, with 18 half-centuries.

“We are proud of Meg for acknowledging that she needs a break and will continue to support her during this time. She has been an incredible contributor to Australian cricket over the last decade, achieving remarkable feats both individually and as part of the team, and has been a brilliant role model for young kids. The welfare of our players is always our number one priority, and we will continue to work with Meg to ensure she gets the support and space she needs,” said Shawn Flegler, CA’s Head of Performance, Women’s Cricket, as quoted by Cricket.com.au.

Australia Women captain Meg Lanning has reclaimed her numero uno position at the ICC Women’s T20I rankings for batters by overtaking her team-mate, Beth Mooney.

The ICC released the latest Women’s rankings on Tuesday and Lanning jumped one place to take over Mooney at the top on the back of her spectacular tri-series against Pakistan and Ireland.

Lanning displayed her class to finish as the leading run scorer with 113 runs from two innings against the Irish side. Her best effort came when she smashed 74 from just 49 deliveries to help Australia register victory in the fourth T20I. I?n that same match, Mooney fell for just 9, which?? proved crucial in the rankings re-shuffle.

New Zealand’s Sophie Devine (third) and the Indian duo of Smriti Mandhana (fourth) and Shafali Verma (fifth) complete the top five T20I batters.

After the 3-0 whitewash against South Africa, England’s Katherine Brunt, who finished as the joint leading wicket-taker in the series with five scalps, went up four spots (to No. 3) in the bowlers’ rankings, just behind her teammates Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn.

Australian left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen rose three spots (to No. 6) in the bowlers’ list, while Ashleigh Gardner advanced three spots to No. 7 in the all-rounders’ category.

Meg Lanning‘s incredible efforts with the willow steered Australia to continue their unbeaten run defeating South Africa by five wickets at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Tue?sday.

Chasing 272, Australia didn’t have a good start, losing the wickets of openers – Alyssa Healy and Rachel Haynes – to be reduced to 45/2 by the 11th over. However, Lanning led from the front and steadied the innings with her controlled play.

Along with Beth Mooney (21) and Tahlia McGrath (32), Lanning formed crucial stands of 60 and 93, respectively. The Aussie skipper smashed her 15th ODI century and stayed unbeaten at 135 to help Australia complete the run chase with 28 balls to spare and register their sixth successive win of t?he tournament.

Earlier, half-centuries from Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus assisted Sout?h Africa to post a competitive total on the board in their allotted 50 overs. While skipper Luus scored 52 off 51 balls, opening batter Wol??vaardt fell short of 10 runs from hitting a hundred.

“We thought it was a par score, and we certainly felt like we were in the game because the ball was coming on nicely towards the back end of the first innings. We felt like we could chase it. It was a fresh wicket today. There have been good wickets and had some world-class batters as well. We broke the back of it (chase) through the middle, which gave us nice little breathing space, I still think we gave away too many chances between batters, including myself, which we don’t need to, and that’s something we can work on,” said Lanning after the match.
