Australia skipper Meg Lanning had a great start to 2023 as she first led her nation to their record eighth ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title and then went on to finish as the highest run scorer of the maiden Women’s Premier League. “Tournaments like this (WPL) will speed that up a fair bit. As an Australian team we think it is important the global game is growing. It is not just about us winning all the time. We want to win all the time. There’s no doubt about that, but there is more at play that just that,” she added.

Lanning has successfully led Australia to four T20 World Cups, one ODI World Cup, three Ashes and? the 2022 Commonwealth Games?? triumph in the past few years, which makes her the most decorated captain in the history of cricket.

The Aussie skipper even expressed her desire to play more cricket and stated: “I can’t see any reason why I can’t play for four or five more years, it is just whether that is something I want to do. Australia captain Meg Lanning is all ready to lead the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise in the upcoming inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) that starts on March 4 in Mumbai.

Lanning ha??s a sensational captaincy record in the shortest format. Under her leadership, Australia have won a record four T20 World Cups, including the most recent one in South Africa last month after they defeated the hosts in the summit clash.

Lanning, who has already arrived in Mumbai for the WPL, has played 132 T20Is, in which she has scored 3405 runs with the help of two hundreds and 15 half-centuries at an average of 36.61 and strike rate of 116.37. The Singapore-born-Aussie star has led her team in 100 T20Is, which is the most by any women’s player in the format.

Notably, the Capitals will begin their WPL campaign on March 5 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Brabourne Stadium. Along with Lanning, India star Jemimah Rodrigues was named as the vice-captain of Capitals.

Australia Women captain Meg Lanning is set to miss the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) with Melbourne Stars as she continues her ??indefinite break from the game. Notably, after leading Australia to Commonwealth Games Gold in Birmingham, Lanning last month announced she was stepping away from cricket.

“After a busy couple of years, I’ve made the decision to take a step back to enable me to spend time focusing on myself. I’m grateful for the support of CA and my teammates and ask that my privacy is respected during this time,” Lanning said in a statement.

Lanning has decided to step back from the g??ame after a busy two-and-a-half-year period in which she led the Aussies to the T20I and ODI World Cups titles and the home Ashes series triumph.

Lanning’s decision to take a break from cricket, with no fixed date for her return, comes with the full support of the Australian apex board.

“We’re proud of Meg for acknowledging that she needs a break and will continue to support her during this time,” said CA’s head of performance of women’s cricket, Shawn Flegler, as quoted by Cricketcomau.

“She’s been an incredible contributor to Australian cricket over the last decade, achieving remarkable feats both individually and as part of the team, and has been a brilliant role model for young kids. The welfare of our players is always our number one priority, and we’ll continue to work with Meg to ensure she gets the support and space she needs,” Flegler added.

Lanning, who is legend in women’s cricket and currently ranked 2nd in T20I rankings and 5th in ODIs, said she wanted to spend more time focusing on herself and is forever grateful to her teammates and CA for the unconditional support.

The ICC released the latest Women’s rankings on Tuesday and Lanning jumped one place to take over Mooney at the top on the back of her spectacular tri-series against Pakistan and Ireland.

Lanning displayed her class to finish as the leading run s?corer with 113 runs from two innings against the Irish side.
