In the Qualifier of the Big Bash League (BBL)|14, Sydney Sixers took on Hobart Hurricanes at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Fans were treated to a spectacular moment during the first innings when Jack Edwards of Sydney Sixers produced an outstanding catch to dismiss Matthew Wade of Hobart Hurricanes.

Jack Edwards takes a screamer to dismiss Matthew Wade

The stunning catch came in the seventh over of the Hurricanes’ innings. Mitchell Perry, the bowler, delivered a short-of-length ball at 132.6kph to Wade. Wade, seeing the width, went for a fierce cut shot. The ball was expected to race to the boundary, but Edwards had other ideas. Positioned at a backward point, Edwards leaped to his right and, with impeccable timing, plucked the ball out of mid-air with his right hand, leaving everyone stunned. Wade’s dismissal, caught by Edwards off Perry’s bowling, came at just 4 runs off 7 balls.

Here’s the video:

Perry was one of the key performers for the Sydney Sixers in the first innings. After his brilliant assist in the dismissal of Wade, he completed his three-over spell with a crucial wicket. The 24-year-old conceded 29 runs, giving an important contribution in curbing the Hurricanes’ batting efforts.

Edwards was not only the fielding hero of the day but also shone with the ball. He contributed with the white leather by dismissing Nikhil Chaudhary for 14.

Hobart Hurricanes posts a challenging total

Asked to bat first, Hobart Hurricanes set a challenging target of 173/7 in their 20 overs. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the Hurricanes put up a competitive total. Opener Caleb Jewell played a steady innings, scoring 40 runs off 41 balls, which included two boundaries. His knock provided stability at the top of the order, but it was Ben McDermott’s blistering 42 off 31 balls that lifted the Hurricanes’ total. McDermott hit four fours and one six, becoming the highest run-scorer for Hobart Hurricanes in BBL history with this remarkable knock.

For the Sixers, Jafer Chohan and Ben Dwarshuis took two wickets each, conceding 28 and 36 r?uns, respectively?.

Australian cricketer and Gujarat Titans player Matthew Wade has officially announced his retirement from international cricket to pursue a coaching career. Wade, who had a successful international run, will be joining Australia’s coaching staff for the upcoming T20 series against Pakistan and the ODI series in Melbourne next week.

Already experienced in coaching Tasmanian youth and second XI teams, Wade aims to stay involved in Australian cricket while continuing to play domestically. For the next two seasons, he will potentially remain active in domestic cricket for Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL), as well as other leagues.

Changes in Gujarat Titans: Potential rebuilding phase for IPL 2025

The Gujarat Titans (GT) are navigating major transformations after a disappointing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Following their ??remarkable debut title win and a runner-up finish the next year, GT slumped to an eighth-place finish in 2024, earning only 12 points from 14 games.

The franchise experienced a pivotal shift as captain Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians (MI), and speculation swirled around head coach Ashish Nehra’s potential departure, which ultimately proved to be unfounded. However, GT’s core managemen?t is already deep into planning for IPL 2025, preparing for the retention deadline on October 31, where they must carefully select their top six pl?ayers to build a robust lineup for the upcoming season.

Matthew Wade’s IPL career: A look at his journey in the league

Matthew Wade made his IPL debut in 2011, though his journey in the league has been a winding one, punctuated by limited appearances and ?modest performance metrics. Over his IPL career, Wade has featured in just 15 matches, accumulating 183 runs at an average of 13.07, with a highest score of 35. Known for his explosive hitting and wicketkeeping skills, Wade’s role in the IPL has been largely confined to cameo appearances rather than sustained stints as a regular player.

Gujarat acquired Wade in the IPL 2024 auction for Rs 2.40 crore, recognizing his experience and utility as a wicketkeeper-batter. Nevertheless, in the 2024 season, Wade struggled to find a consistent place in the starting XI. He p??layed only two matches that season, largel?y due to GT’s decision to prioritize other players for the overseas slots.

In what turned out to be his last IPL appearance on May 2024 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, Wade scored a ze??ro, further highlighting his inconsistent performance in the IPL. Whil??e Wade’s presence as an experienced hand could have added depth, his time in the league ultimately did not live up to the initial promise, and his statistical contributions remained limited.

3 reasons why Gujarat Titans may not retain Matthew Wade

1. Lack of Significant Impact and Limited Appearances

Wade’s IPL career has not yielded the kind of impactful performances teams look for in retained players. His batting average of 13.07 and a highest sco??re of only 35 across 15 matches reflect his struggle to make an impression in the competitive league. In the 2024 season, Wade featured in just two games, spending the majority of the season on the bench. This limited involvement hints that Wade, despite his skills, was unable to secure a crucial role within GT’s squad, making his retention?? less valuable compared to other potential options. The sporadic nature of his IPL appearances underscores his inability to cement his position, which is a key factor behind GT possibly not retaining him.

2. Team Composition Challenges with Overseas Slot Limitations

In the IPL, each team is restricted to fielding only four overseas players in their playing XI, which places a premium on versatility and performance consistency among international recruits. For Gujarat, this limitation meant that Wade’s role as a wicketkeeper-batter was often overshadowed by other players who provided greater flexibility or filled more critical positions. GT frequently relied on Wriddhiman Saha, an Indian wicketkeeper-batter, which allowed the team to allocate the overseas slots to international players in other areas. This composition strategy, favoring local talent for wicketkeeping, reduced the demand for Wade’s specific skill set, further diminishin?g his value as a retained player.

3. Wade’s Shift Towards Coaching

With Wade announcing his retirement from international cricket to pursue coaching, his focus has clearly sh??ifted from playing to mentoring. Although he intends to continue playing domestically for Tasmania and in leagues like the BBL for the next couple of seasons, his increasing involvement in coaching may limit his availability and motivation for the IPL. Wade has already taken on roles within Australia’s coaching staff, assisting in upcoming series against Pakistan. Given that Gujarat are looking to rebuild after a difficult 2024 season, they may opt for players who are fully committed to the league. Wade’s dual focus on coaching could impact his performance or availability, which may sway the team’s management towards seeking alternatives.

Australian wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade has announced ??his retireme??nt from international cricket, bringing an end to a 13-year career.

Matthew Wade becomes wicketkeeping and fielding coach post retirement

While he will continue to play domestic and franchise cricket, Wade will also transition into a coaching role, taking on the position of Australia’s wicketkeeping and fielding coach. His first coaching assignment will be the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan.

Wade’s career was marked by resilience and adaptability. He often found himself competing for a spot in the Australian team across all formats, but he eventually cemented his place as a key player in the T20I side. His crucial contributions to Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup triumph, particularly his match-?winn??ing performance against Pakistan in the semi-final, highlighted his ability to perform under pressure.

Despite of his decent performances on the India tour and the 2024 T20 World Cup 2024, the selectors made their intentions clear by not picking Wade for the recent tour of the UK. The 36-year-old represented Australia in 3?6 Tests, 97 ODIs and 92 T20Is, scoring 1613, 1867 and 1202 runs respectively.

“I want to thank all of my Australian team mates, staff and coaches”: Wade

Speaking of his retirement, Wade said, “I was fully aware my international days were most likely over at the end of the last T20 World Cup. My international retirement and coaching has been a constant conversation with George [Bailey] and Andrew [McDonald] over the past six months.

“Coaching has been on my radar over the last few years and thankfully some great opportunities have come my way, for which I am very grateful and excited.

“I will continue to play BBL and the odd franchise league over the summer months but around those commitments as a player I am investing heavily in my coaching.

“As my international career closes, I want to thank all of my Australian team mates, staff and coaches. I enjoyed the ride as challenging as it can be at international level. Without good people around me I would have never got as much out of myself as I did.”

“I also thank my family, mum, dad and sisters for the countless hours they put in over the years getting me to games and training.

“Lastly to Julia and the kids. I can’t thank them enough for the sacrifices they have made for me to continue to pursue my dreams. No words can explain how grateful I am to them, none of this would have happened without their support.”

Long-standing rivals Australia and England went head-to-head in the 17th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday. The intense battle took place at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, where Australia triumphed over England with a 36??-run victory. The game was packe??d with thrilling moments and standout performances that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Tense moment between Matthew Wade and umpire Nitin Menon

One incident that drew significant attention involved Australian player Matthew Wade and on-field umpire Nitin Menon. This altercation occurred in the 18th over of Australia’s innings while Wade was set to face England’s Adil Rashid.

As Rashid bowled, Wade seemed unprepared but still managed to defend the ball back to the bowler upon realizing the delivery. According to cricket rules, the ball could have been called dead if W??ade had not played a shot.

Umpire Menon addressed this by questioning Wade’s appeal for a dead ball, asking, “For what?” Wade, unhappy with Menon’s tone, moved towards him aggressively. In response, Menon gestured for Wade to back off, leading to a dramatic and memorable confrontation.

Marsh emphasized the importance of learning from such conditions and continuously improving as they progress through the tournament.

“Very pleased with that effort, our all-round game is outstanding, it was a great game. The way we started, we learned a lot of lessons from the first game and the boys turned up really well today. Hobart Hurricanes inflicted a seven-run defeat on Melbourne Stars in Match 38 of Big Bash League 2023-24 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

While the Hurricanes are out of the playoff race, the loss has given serious dents to the Stars’ finals prospects. Hurricanes’ wicket-keeper batter Matthew Wade emerged as th??e standout performer for his side, playing a classy knoc??k of 63 runs.

Hobart Hurricanes’ dominating run with the willow

Hurricanes made a solid start to their innings after being put into bat, with the opening pair of Wade and Ben McDermott providing a strong foundation. They accumulated 86 runs in the initial ten overs, setting the stage for a big total. McDermott played a brisk innings, scoring 50 off 35 balls with seven fours and two sixes before being dismissed by Nathan Coulter-Nile.

Wade shined for his side, scoring 63 runs off 41 deliveries, featuring seven fours and a six. However, his dismissal by Dan Lawrence marked a turning point?, triggering a collapse for the Hurricanes.

The Stars capitalized by taking wickets at regular intervals, and despite Tim David‘s brief cameo of 16 runs off seven balls, the Hurricanes lost seven wickets for just 55 runs. Ultimately, the guests concluded their innings at 187/8 in 20 overs, falling short of the anticipated big total due to the middle-order collapse.

Melbourne Stars’ below par run-chase

The Stars faced an early setback in their run chase, losing both openers within the power-play for just 31 runs, courtesy of Riley Meredith and Nathan Ellis. Beau Webster steadied the innings at number 3, sco??ring 55 off 43 balls, but a quicker scoring rate from? him could have been advantageous.

Despite Glenn Maxwell‘s initial promise, he struggled later on and fell victim to Nathan Ellis. Marcus Stoinis played a vital role, contributing 48 runs in a crucial 80-run partnership for the 4th wick?et with Webster. ??With 33 runs needed from 13 balls, Stoinis was dismissed in the 18th over.

Chris Jordan and Ellis bowled tightly in the penultimate overs, setting up 24 runs to defend in the final over for Peter Hatzoglou. Cartwright and Webster each hit a six in the last over, with Webster reaching his half-century ??on the final ball. The Stars concluded their innings at 180/4 in 20 overs, losing the game by a tiny margin of seven runs.
