South Africa Women have unveiled a 20-member squad for a crucial training camp ahead of the much-anticipated ODI tri-nation series in Sri Lanka, featuring powerhouse teams India and the host nation. The camp, which runs from April 6 to 14 at Cricket South Africa’s Centre of Excellence in Tshwane, is a significant stepping stone for the Proteas women as they gear up for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup to be held later this year in India.

Reason behind Marizanne Kapp’s absence

In a notable move, veteran seam-bowling all-rounder Marizanne Kapp has been rested from both the training camp and the upcoming tri-series. Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced that the decision was made in alignment with Kapp’s individual workload management and long-term conditioning program. Having represented South Africa in 149 ODIs, Kapp has been a cornerstone of the national setup, and her absence from the upcoming series is aimed at optimizing her physical readiness for the bigger challenge that lies ahead; the ODI World Cup in India.

“Experienced all-rounder Marizanne Kapp has been rested for the training camp and the upcoming ODIs in Sri Lanka as she begins her individual conditioning block in preparation for subsequent tours and the 50-over World Cup later in the year,” the statement read.

Training camp call-ups for the ODI tri-series

While a senior figure is being given a well-deserved break, the spotlight now shifts to three uncapped players who have been selected to attend the camp: wicketkeeper-batter Karabo Meso, all-rounder Miané Smit and left-arm spinner Seshnie Naidu. Their inclusion signals South Africa’s intention to invest in future stars while building squad depth. These promising young cricketers will train alongside the nationally contracted core group and experienced players like Nondumiso Shangase, Lara Goodall and Faye Tunnicliffe, giving them a taste of elite-level preparation and intensity.

South Africa’s World Cup 2025 intentions

Led by captain Laura Wolvaardt, South Africa will enter the tri-series with clear objectives – solidifying team combinations, assessing fringe players, and building momentum for the World Cup. The matches against India and Sri Lanka, set to take place from April 27 to May 11, will be a vital part of this process. The tri-nation series serves as both a competitive platform and a preparatory battleground, especially as all three teams look to finalize their squads for the mega event in India. The Proteas will be eager to test their bench strength and establish their credentials as serious contenders on the global stage.

As the countdown to the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 accelerates, this training camp offers a glimpse into South Africa’s strategic visionbalancing experience with youth, fine-tuning skills for Asian conditions, and ultimately setting the foundation for a strong World Cup campaign.

In a much-awaited clash at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, Marizanne Kapp delivered a stunning performance that gave Delhi Capitals (DC) a breakthrough in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 final against Mumbai Indians (MI). Known for her fierce competitiveness and all-round capabilities, Kapp showcased her bowling prowess by cleaning up star all-rounder Hayley Matthews with an unplayable delivery.

As the match unfolded, Kapp opened the bowling for Delhi Capitals, who were seeking their first WPL title after finishing as runners-up in the previous two seasons. The atmosphere was electric, with fans eagerly anticipating a clash between two formidable teams: the Capitals, led by Meg Lanning, and the defending champions, Mumbai Indians, captained by Harmanpreet Kaur.

Kapp’s moment of brilliance came during the third over of the innings. After a cautious start from Matthews, who had been in exceptional form throughout the tournament, Kapp bowled a delivery that pitched on a good length and swung late, leaving Matthews no chance. The ball crashed into leg stump off the inside edge, sending shockwaves through the Mumbai camp as they lost their first wicket for just 5 runs.

Here’s the video:

This wicket was crucial, as Matthews had been a key player for MI, contributing significantly with the bat in the last couple of games. But in the final, she got out after scoring only 3 runs off 10 balls.

Marizanne Kapp‘s all-round effort helped South Africa to register a thrilling victory over England in the ongoing Women’s World Cup 2022 on Monday.

With the third straight loss, the defending champions’ World Cup hopes are now hanging by a thread. On the other hand, it was Proteas’ third consecutive victory which has put them at the second spot in the points table.

Bowling first, South Africa restricted England at 235/9 in their allotted 50 overs. Kapp bowled exceptionally well and went on to pick the five-wicket haul. She conceded 45 runs in her quota of 10 overs, including a maiden.

Tammy Beaumont and Amy Ellen Jones played handy knocks of 62 and 53 respectively to take England to a respectable total. The match went to the wire, where the Proteas managed to seal the victory in the final over of the innings.

Opener Laura Wolvaardt was the star with the bat, smashing a crucial 77 off 101 balls with the help of eight boundaries. Kapp, who dismantled the English batting unit, made her contribution with the willow as well. The senior all-rounder scored 32 off 42 balls as South Africa won the contest by three wickets.

In another match, Bangladesh pulled off a stunning victory against Pakistan to register their maiden win in the ongoing multi-team tournament.

Put to bat first, Bangladesh posted 234/7 in 50 overs, thanks to crucial knocks by opener Sharmin Akhter (44 off 55) and captain Nigar Sultana (46 off 64). For Pakistan, Nashra Sandhu was the pick of the bowlers, taking a three-wicket haul for 41 runs in her quota of 10 overs.

In reply, Pakistan only managed to reach 225/9, losing the game by only nine runs. Opener Sidra Ameen was the only major highlight in Pakistan’s innings. She smashed a brilliant century, but her incredible ton went in vain as other batters failed to carry the momentum. Ameen scored 104 off 140 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries before meeting an unfortunate run-out.

Fahima Khatun (3/38) and Rumana Ahmed (2/29) were the chief destroyers for Bangladesh bagging wickets at important stages to keep their side a step ahead in a thrilling contest.
