Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Mahmudullah has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 17-year career. The 39-year-old’s decision marks the end of an illustrious journey that saw him serve as one of the cornerstones of Bangladesh cricket.

A career spanning formats and generations

Mahmudullah, known for his cal?m demeanor and clutch performances, had already stepped away from Test cricket in 2021 and T20 Internationals in 2024. His final announcement came through a heartfelt social media post on March 12, 2025, where he expressed gratitude to his family, teammates, coaches, and fans for their unwavering support.

His last international appearance was during the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy against New Zealand. Unfortunately, it was not a fairytale ending as Bangladesh exited the tournament winless in the group stage. Mahmudullah’s final innings saw him dismissed for a single-digit score by Michael Bracewell.

  • ODI Records: He played 239 ODIs, scoring 5,689 runs at an average of 36.46, including four centuries and 32 half-centuries.
  • World Cup Heroics: He remains the only Bangladeshi cricketer to score three centuries in ODI World Cups.
  • T20I Contributions: Across 141 T20Is, he amassed 2,444 runs at a strike rate of 117.38 and took 41 wickets.
  • Test Cricket: In his 50-Test career, he scored over 2,900 runs and contributed with 5 hundreds and 16 half-centuries.

Bangladesh‘s star all-rounder, Mahmudullah, has announced his retirement from T20 international cricket, effective at the conclusion of the ongoing series against India. The decision came as a surpris??e to many, given his continued success in the format. However, Mahmudullah, who is approaching his 39th birthday, believes it is the right time to st?ep away and focus on his ODI career.

“I am retiring from T20I cricket after the last game of this series. I was pre-decided before coming here,” Mahmudullah told reporters.

A decision made with careful consideration

Mahmudullah revealed that he had discussed his retirement plans with his family, the Bangladesh cricket team’s coaching staff, captain, chief selector, and board president. The consensus among all parties was that it was a wise move, particularly with the upcoming ODI World Cup less than two years away.

“I had a chat with my family. I spoke to the coach, captain, chief selector and the board president as well. I think it is the right time to move on from this format for me and the team. Especially with the World Cup coming up in less than two years. I will concentrate on the one-day game,” he added.

Mahmudullah’s stellar T20I career

Mahmudullah’s T20I career has been nothing short of remarkable. He has represented Bangladesh in 139 matches, making him one of the most capped players in the format’s history. His contributions with the bat have been invaluable, and he holds the distinction of being Bangladesh’s second-highest run-scorer in T20Is with 2395 runs.

Mahmudullah’s transformation as a finisher

One of the defining moments of Mahmudullah’s T20I career was his transformation into a devastating finisher. Under the guidance of former coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, Mahmudullah developed a penchant for hitting sixes and became a fearsome force in the lower order. His ability to win matches with the bat? has earned him a place in the hearts of Bangladesh cricket fans.

Memorable moments of Mahmudullah

Mahmudullah’s T20I career has been filled with memorable moments. His unbeaten 43 off 18 balls against Sri Lanka in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy match, which secured Bangladesh’s victory in a tense finish, is often cited as one of his finest innings. However, Mahmudullah also acknowledged the frustration of losing key matches, such as the 2016 T20 World Cup defeat against India.

While Bangladesh may not have won a major T20I trophy during Mahmudullah’s career, the team has made significant strides in recent years. The emergence of talented players and the improved performance of the team are a testament to the hard work and dedication of individuals like Mahmudullah.

The future of Bangladesh Cricket

Mahmudullah’s retirement leaves a void in the Bangladesh T20I team. However, there are several promising young players who have the potential to fill his shoes. The key will be for the coaching staff and captain to provide the necessary support and guidance to these players as they develop their skills.

As Mahmudullah bids farewell to T20I cricket, he leaves behind a legacy of achievement and inspiration. His contributions to Bangladesh cricket will be rem??embered for years to come.

Pakistan are squaring off against Bangladesh in Match 31 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The contest carries immense significance for the Babar Azam-led side as they seek to maintain t??heir hop?es of advancing to the playoffs in the ongoing tournament.

The stakes are high as Pakistan aim to secure a crucial victory in this encounter, kno??wing that the??ir journey in the tournament hinges on the outcome.

Bangladesh’s disappointing batting performance

Bangladesh’s decision to bat first after winning the toss turned out to be disastrous as they struggled throughout their innings. They lost their first wicket in the initial over when Tanzid Hasan was dismissed for a duck. Najmul Hossain Shanto‘s poor form continued as he fell for just four runs. Mushfiqur Rahim also failed, departing ???with just five runs to his name.

Mahmudullah Riyad was promoted up the order and, along with Litton Das, steadied the innings. The duo built a crucial partnership for the fourth wicket, amassing 79 runs, which momentarily shifted the momentum in Bangladesh’s favour. However, Das fell on 45, and Pakistan capitalized on his dismissal.

The Pakistani bowlers tightened their grip during the middle overs, restricting the scoring rate and taking crucial wickets. Mahmudullah reached fifty off 58 balls, but Shaheen dismissed him for 56. Towhid Hridoy hit a six but departed on the very next ball after scoring only seven runs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz then joined the captain, Shakib Al Hasan, who played a handful knock of 43 runs before getting out in the 40th over. Miraz contributed with a 30-ball 25, but the Bangla Tigers’ tail was quickly wrapped up, and they were bowled out for 204 in the 46th over.

On the fourth ball of the 31st over, Shaheen Afridi switched to round the wicket and angled the delivery towards the stumps. The ball, clocking at 130.2 kmph, moved away after pitching. Mahmudullah found himself squar??ed up as he attempted to work it to the leg side, following the angle. The right-handed batter was deceived by the movement and got beaten on the outside edge. The white leather brushed his back leg and ultimately crashed onto the middle stump, giving Green Team the breakthrough they sought.

Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe by 220 runs in the one-off Test

Bangladesh bundled out Zimbabwe for 256 on the final day of the one-off Test and won the contest by a huge margin of 220 runs. Brendan Taylor (92) and Donald Tiripano (52) were the top run-ge?tters for the hosts in their second in?nings.

Mehidy Hasan and Taskin Ahmed were the pick of the bowlers for the visiting side. Both bagged a four-wicket haul to demolish the Zimbabwe batting unit. While Mehidy earned a 4-fer for 66? runs in 30.4 overs, Taskin grabbed 4 scalps for 82 runs in 24 overs.

Mahmudullah was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his incredible effort with the bat. At the presentation, Mahmudullah said that he tried to stick to his strengths and tried to be as simple as possible.

“Always like to be a team man and contribute for the team. Really happy to see the smiles on their faces. Liton batted well but missed out on his century. It was good to see him bat from the other end,” said Mahmudullah at the post-match presentation.

“Me and Taskin had a good partnership. He was a bit impatient at times, but we built a partnership, and in the end, it was a good total. If we play international cricket, there will be pressure. I tried to stick to my strengths; I tried to be as simple as I could,” he added.

Bangladesh’s middle-order batsman Mahmudullah, who scored an unbeaten 150 in the ongoing?? one-off Test against Zimbabwe??, has announced his retirement from the longest format of the game.

“Yes, Mahmudullah had informed that he does not want to prolong his Test career after this game. But he did not inform us anything officially and we have to see whether it’s an emotional outburst or not,” a top-ranked BCB official told Cricbuzz.

BCB President Nazmul Hasan asserted that it’s very strange if someone retires in the middle of a Test match, and termed the situation ‘unusual’.

“No one officially told me anything. But one called me and informed that he (Mahmudullah) doesn’t want to play Tests after the ongoing Test and he told that to everyone in the dressing room. But I found it very unusual. The game is not over yet,” Nazmul was quote?d in a leading Bangladesh Daily Prothom Alo on Friday??.

“We have written to all of them this time about the format they want to play in the future. It was taken four or five days before leaving for Zimbabwe. Riyad (Mahmudullah) had written that he wants to play in all three formats, if he gets chance and that’s why he was included to the Test team,” he said.

“I called him twice at my house and asked him and he confirmed to me that he wanted to play Tests. I asked him, will you bowl if necessary? He said he would do that too. He’s talking about retirement now, that’s why I’m absolutely surprised,” the BCB chief added.

“I think he may have said it emotionally. Otherwise, he is not supposed to say so in the middle of a Test match after writing to the board,” he said. “If he did it in the middle of the Test, it would put a very negative impact on the players and that is totally unacceptable. We have no problem if anyone doesn’t want to play, but it doesn’t make sense to create chaos by saying this in the middle of the series,” BCB president concluded.

Mahmudullah has also told his spo??rts management company abou?t his decision to bid farewell to Test cricket.

“Am I fit to play Test? I asked myself several times after getting out against Pakistan in such ugly manner. I wanted to find the answer while I wanted to give the answer as well. I found the answer in Harare. I know I am perfect for Test but I won’t play in this format anymore,” he was quoted as saying by Imago Sports Management, the c?ompany that has been managing him for a ??few years.

With no action going around right now, several cricketers have been doing live sessions on social media to keep themselves busy. Bangladesh all-rounder Mahmudullah also followed suit and attended a Facebook live chat programme ‘Life is beautiful’ organized by a local television channel named ‘Jamuna Television’ on Tuesday.

During the conversation, Mahmudullah named Indian skipper Virat Kohli as one of the best three batsmen in world cricket. Kohli is currently the only batter, who averages above 50 in all three formats of the game. Having notched over 21,000 runs, the Delhi-born is, well and indeed, on his way to be counted amongst the all-time gre??ats.

The other two best batsmen, Mahmudullah picked were Pakistan’s limited-overs skipper Babar Azam and Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim.

Babar has arguably been his team’s standout batsman across formats. After shining in the white-ball cricket, the Lahore-born has started to find his feet even in Tests. Mushfiqur, on the other hand, is Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer in Test cricket. He has been a stalwart for the Tigers in their middle order. The Bogra-born has amassed over 11,500 runs in international cricket with the help of 14 centuries and 146 half-centuries.

Mahmudullah further picked Shakib Al Hasan, Mehedi Has?an Miraz and Taijul Islam as his favourite three spinners in the current Bangladesh team??. Mahmudullah even said that he would have loved to face former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar when the latter was at his best.

“I didn’t play against Shoaib Akhtar. But I played one match against him but did not face him. I think I wanted to face him. It would be obviously challenging as well,” he said. “He was the quickest bowler in his prime time. It would be challenging facing him, and I like taking challenges as well,” the Bangladesh T20I skipper added.

As far as Mahmudullah is concerned, he has been an asset for Bangladesh Tigers for over a decade. In 4?9 Tests, 188 ODIs and 87 T20Is, he has scored 2764, 4070 and 1475 runs respectively. He also has seven centuries and 41 half-centuries to his name.

One of the best finishers produced by Ban?gladesh cricket, of-late, Mahmudullah Riyaz, has recently heaped praises on his Indian counterpart, MS Dhoni and his batting style.

The game has seen several successful finishers such as M??ichael Bevan, Michael Hussey and many others, but none have had the impact close to the talismanic Indian wicket-keeper batsman.

Dhoni is the only batsman to score 10,000 ODI runs in the list of leading run-getters dominated by the top-order batsman. The r?eason why his feat remains special is that Dhoni came in to bat at number five and six, throughout the entirety of his ODI career?.

Above all, MSD has successfully shepherded the Indian? team to competitive totals ??from precariously placed situations.

Al??so, there have been numerous instances when the Indian team banked on Dhoni to steer India to victory. The Ranchi-born wicketkeeper?-batsman, in his trademark style, took the game deep where the bowlers felt the pressure more, and on uncountable occasions finished the chase with a maximum.

“I’m a huge fan of MS Dhoni, the way he controls himself. He also batted at five-six for the India team, and whenever I sit idle I try to watch his innings, even watch live games of his. And try to learn how he composes himself in the game,” Mahmudullah said during his interaction with Cricfrenzy.

“It is not easy having 50 plus average in ODI cricket for so many matches and having a strike rate of 90 plus, it’s amazing and the way he controls the game till the last, similarly I also have to bat at five-six, so I try to learn these things from him. He’s been a great influence in my cricket arena,” added Bangladesh’s designated finisher.

Both Mahmudullah and Dhoni have shared the field multiple times whenever the arch-rivals India and Bangladesh locked horns in the last decade?.

Most famously, during the virtual quarter-finals of 2016 T20 World Cup, when the game was well within reach for Bangladesh. But the Tigers faltered under pressure in the final over of the match by losing three wickets off consecutive balls. Last of which, came due to the brilliance of Dhoni, who outran the batsman at the non-striker’s end.

Bangladesh T20I skipper Mahmudullah has revealed that Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar helped him to get a sponsor during his initial day??s.

Mahmudullah said that one day while he was returning from practice, he got a call from the agent of Tendulkar. The agent told him that Sachin had recommended his name to Adidas to sign him. Adidas is the second-largest sportswear manufacturer in the world and had ‘Little Master’ as one of its brand ambassadors during that period.

“One day, I was returning home from practice through a cab; at that time, someone called me. By that time Adidas might have been the sponsor of Sachin sir, and as I was young at that time I had no sponsor, so that person told me that Sachin sir has recommended you to get a sponsor, I couldn’t understand what to say,” Mahmudullah said during a recent Facebook live session with Cricfrenzy.

“I still thank him a lot as I haven’t got the chance to say that in front because we grew up watching his matches and it was a great privilege to be able to play against him. Having this compliment and that suggestion means a lot to me and I really really thank him,” the 34-year-old added.

There were stories that Tendulkar had said that Mahmudullah will be the next big thing for Bangladesh. However, the Bangladeshi all-rounder said that he didn’t know this.

“Actually, this is the first time I’m hearing it from you. Thank you for giving me such a big compliment. I’m feeling so good, thank you very much,” Mahmudullah said when he was informed about Tendulkar’s remark about his future.

“I’ve played against him probably in 2008 I think we had a home series and I had my debut in July 2007. So, I’ve played pretty well in that series,” he concluded.

The experienced Mahmudullah took over from Shakib-al-Hasan as captain of Bangladesh’s T20 side after ICC banned the latter for two years.
