The Netherlands registered their first victory of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating Nepal in a Group D match on Tuesday (June 4) by six wickets. The Dutch side managed to restrict Nepal to a modest total of 106 runs in 19.2 overs, thanks to impressive bowling performances from Tim Pringle and Logan van Beek. Van Beek, in particular, played a crucial role in the closing stages of the innings by taking ?the last two wickets on consecutive deliveries, effectively bundling out Ne?pal.

Crucial wickets by Logan van Beek against Nepal

The Netherlands’ bowlers were on top from the start, with Pringle picking up three wickets to put Nepal under pressure. Van Beek then delivered the final blows in the last over.

On the first ball of the last over, Van Beek bowled a scrambled seam delivery, full and straight, that crashed into the stumps as Gulshan Jha attempted a big hit but missed completely. The very next ball, van Beek bowled a back-of-a-length delivery on off stump, which Abinash Bohara tried to hit over long on but only managed t??o top-edge, resulting in an easy catch for Van Beek himself. This double strike ended Nepal’s innings at a meager 106.

However, Max O’Dowd anchored the innings with a gritty knock of 54 runs off 48 balls. His composed performance ensured that the Netherlands reached the target with six wickets i??n hand and eight balls to spare, clinching a much-needed win.

In a thrilling Super Smash 2023-2024 encounter on Monday (January 22), the Wellington Firebirds secured a hard-fought victory against the Canterbury Kings, winning by 18 runs. Amidst this gripping clash, the spotlight turned to a sensational moment orchestrated by Canterbury pacer Logan van Beek, who pulled off a remarkable return catch to dismiss Tom Latham.

Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls provide a strong start

Having been asked to bat first, Canterbury’s innings progressed smoothly, reaching 145/1 in 17 overs. However, van Beek’s exceptional performance in the 18th overturned the tide to some extent. The experienced 33-year-old displayed his bowling prowess by removing Henry Nicholls with the first ball ??of the over. He went on to concede only seven runs from the following four deliveries.

Logan van Beek’s sensational catch of Latham alters the game’s course

On the decisive final ball of that over, Van Beek delivered a skillfully placed delivery outside the off-stump, tempting Latham to stretch wide and attempt a forceful launch over the bowler’s head. Latham, in an aggressive bid to maneuver the ball, aimed to drag it from a wide angle and unleash it with power. Nevertheless, the execution did not go as planned.

Latham’s forceful strike sent the ball hurtling straight back at the Van Beek, who stationed in his follow-through position, displayed exceptional reflexes and fielding prowess. Despite the ferocity of Latham’s shot, Van Beek, with remarkable agility, managed to snatch the ball out of the air with just one hand. The catch, executed as a blinder, showcased Van Beek’s extraordinary athleticism and cricketing acumen.

Respectable total by Wellington Firebirds

Despite Van Beek’s brilliance, Canterbury managed to score 26 runs off the final two overs, concluding their innings on a formidable total of 178/4 in 20 overs. Latham emerged as the top scorer for Canterbury, contributing 60 runs off 49 deliveries and forming an 84-run partnership with Nicholls for the second wicket.

Firebirds secure victory over Canterbury Kings

In their pursuit of the target, Canterbury made a solid start with a 39 runs stand. Nonetheless, they lost wickets at regular intervals. Michael Bracewell‘s aggressive innings, marked by three massive sixes, propelled them to 97/3 after 11 overs. Unfortunately, once Bracewell was dismissed, Canterbury’s chase derailed, and they could only manage to reach 160/9 in their allotted 20 overs.

In the 15th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, South Africa and the Netherlands are squaring off at the picturesque HPCA St?adium in Dharamshala.

However, this encounter has been marred by rain, resulting in a reduced match format of 43 overs per side. South Africa won the crucial toss and decided to bowl first. In a spirited bowling performance, the Proteas managed to limit the Netherlands to 245 runs, with the Dutch side losing eight w?ickets.

Scott Edwards powers Netherlands to a respectable total

Despite a promising start from opener Max O’Dowd, his partner Vikramjit Singh struggled and was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the seventh over. O’Dowd himself departed after scoring 18 runs.

Colin Ackermann provided some stability, but Rabada took another wicket by dismissing Bas de Leede. The South African bowlers maintained pressure, and despite a partnership between Sybrand Engelbrecht and Teja Nidamanuru, wickets fell at regular intervals.

However, Scott Edwards and Roelof van der Merwe (29) changed the game’s complexion by putting together a quick 50-run partnership. Edwards reached a well-earned fifty, and van der Merwe added a swashbuckling 29 off 19 balls. Aryan Dutt (23 no) and Edwards finished the innings strongly, wit??h the skipper scoring an impressive 78 not out.

South African bowlers Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Rabada claimed two wickets each, with Gerald Coetzee and Keshav Maharaj also contributing to the wickets column.

Quinton de Kock’s remarkable work behind the stumps

A pivotal incident occurred on the final delivery of the 34th over when Maharaj delivered a fuller-length ball that pitched around the middle stump line and exhibited a substantial turn away. Batter Logan van Beek lured into a drive, ventured slightly outside h??is crease but was left bamboozled as the ball narrowly evaded the outside edge of his bat.

Behind the stumps, wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock seized the opportunity and?? swiftly dislodged the bails, effecting a crucial stumping that left both teams and the spectators in awe of the skill on d?isplay.

The ODI World Cup 2023 could’ve witness a historic moment if star all-rounder Logan van Beek, representing the Netherlands, had entered the field in Match 06 of the tournament against New Zealand at t??he Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad??.

A unique record missed

Van Beek might’ve achieved a record of playing against his country of birth, New Zealand.

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, Van Beek has a ??Dutch heritage through his paternal lineage. His grandparents migrated to New Zealand from the Netherlands in the mid-20th century, making him eligible to represent the Netherlands in international cricket.

Interestingly, Van Beek’s maternal grandfather, Sammy Guillen, achieved the rare distinction of representing both the West Indies and New Zealand in Test cricket during his career.

Other cricketers with similar records

While Van Beek’s feat remains uncompleted, there have been some other cricketers who have represented a country different from their birthplace.

Kevin Pietersen

The attacking batter, Kevin Pietersen, was born?? in South Africa but represented England from 2004 to 2014. Pietersen played 10 Tests, 17 ODIs, and 6 T20Is against his birth nation, accumulating 817 run?s, 646 runs, and 207 runs, respectively.

Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi

Born into the royal family of Pataudi, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi is remembered not only as the father of the illustrious Indian captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi but also as a rare individual who played Test cricket for both England and India??. He ??appeared in a total of 6 Tests, 3 for England and as many for India.

Kepler Wessels

Kepler Wessels, like Iftikhar, played for two countries. He represented Australia in 24 Tests and 54 ODIs, and South Africa in 16 Tests and 55 ODI??s. Although he played against Australia for South Africa, he never f??aced the country of his birth as he was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
