In a gripping encounter at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, the Gujarat Giants managed to fend off a spirited challenge from the Bhilwara Kings to secure a nail-biting victory by a margin o??f three runs.

Put in to bat first, the Gujarat Giants put up a competitive total of 172/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Chris Gayle’s explosive knock of 52 runs off 27 deliveries set the tone for the innings, well-supported by contributions from Richard Levi, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala and Chirag Khurana.

However, the Bhilwara Kings’ bowlers, led by Jesal Karia and Rahul Sharma, kept the Giants in check with timely breakthroughs. Karia’s two wickets and Sharma’s disciplined spell ensured the Kings had a fighting chance to chase down the target.

West Indies opener Lendl Simmons announced his retirement from international cricket on Monday (July 18). Simmons, who made his debut for the West Indies way back in December 2006 in an ODI against Pakistan, represented the Caribbean nation fo?r 16 long years.

Simmons was a part of West Indies’ triumphant T20 World Cup campaigns in 2012 and 2016. His masterful innings of 82 in the T20 WC semifinal against India in 2016 is often? regarded as ?one of his best knocks.

Simmons’ last outing in national colours came in T20 WC in 2021, where he made only 16 off 35 balls in his side’s loss to South Africa. Overall, in 144 games across formats, the right-handed batter accumulated 3763 runs in international cricket.

“When I wore the Maroon Colours of the West Indies Cricket for the first time on debut in ODIs on December 7, 2006, little did I know that my international career would have lasted 16 years, but my passion and love for the sport fuelled me every day,” Simmons said in his statement on Twitter.

“I’m closing this chapter of International cricket, having played 144 matches and scoring 3763 runs from all formats. I want to thank the West Indies Cricket Team for the opportunities, and I wish the new crop of WI players all the best and to keep on believing in yourselves and your abilities,” he added.

Notably, Simmons’ announcement came on the same day when his former teammate Denesh Ramdin decided to hang up his boots for West Indies. Ramdin, who debuted on July 13, 2006, in a Test match against Sri Lanka, finished his international career wi??th 74 Tests, 139 O??DIs and 71 T20Is.

Ramdin managed to score 2898 runs in red-ball format, 2200 in ODIs and 636 in the shortest format.? Overall, the right-handed batter smashed six hundreds and 24 half-centuries in the international arena.

“It is with great pleasure that I announce my retirement from international cricket. The past 14 years have been a dream come true. I fulfilled my childhood dreams by playing cricket for Trinidad and Tobago and the West Indies. My career afforded me the opportunity to see the world, make friends from different cultures and still be able to appreciate where I came from,” Ramdin wrote on Instagram.

“Even though I am announcing my retirement from international cricket, I am not retiring from professional cricket. I will still be playing franchise cricket around the world,” he added.

The limited-overs specialist from the West Indies, Lendl Simmons, has picked his all-time T20 XI and named MS Dhoni as captain. As openers, Simmons named his countryman Chris Gayle, who is the highest run-scorer in white-ball cricket for West Indies and India’s current T20I skipper Rohit Sharma, who has scored four tons in the shortest format and won fiv??e IPL titles for Mumbai Indian??s (MI).

For the 3rd and 4th spot, Simmons went with India’s run-machine Virat Kohli and South African legend AB de Villiers. Apart from being a West Indies skipper, he is a?lso the captain of Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). So far, Pollard has featured in 93 T20Is where he has scored 1468 runs with a strike rate of 135.84.

Speaking about Dhoni, he started his T20I career by leading Team India to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2007. Recently, he led Chennai based franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to victory in the?? 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Simmons has picked Dwayne Bravo as the second all-rounder in his side. Bravo has appeared in all the seven T20 W??orld Cups and lifted the trophy in 2012 and 2016 for his national team. He played 90 T20Is for West Indies, scoring 1245 runs and bagging 78 wickets.

Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan and Sunil Narine of West Indies were the two specialist spinners in Simmons’ line-up. For the pacers, the Trinidadian went with India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kagiso Rabada of South Africa.

The left-armer bowled a good length ball between middle and off-stump line, and Simmons quickly read it as he flicked the white leather for a huge six over square leg. The flamboyant strokemaker announced his return to form in style with a majestic 96, which came off 63 deliveries. Simmons smacked seven boundaries and six maximums in the process and boasted a strike-rate of 152.3.

After Lynn’s dismissal, the Patriots fell like a pack of cards and handed a whopping 59-run-win to the Knight Riders.

“This is a pretty strong West Indies T20 team good comeback victory after the disappointment of the first game,” tweeted Lara.

Before the start of the three-matc??h series, Lara showed confidence in Kieron Pollard and said he could be a good captain.

“There is a World Cup in under 12 months, and you are looking for the right person, someone who can keep the ground running. He has the experience to do so. It is a good decision, but it is still going to be an uphill battle,” said Lara.

“He has played all around the World in different leagues. He has gained a lot of respect from the opposition. I didn’t see it as a bad decision,” added Lara.

In the second T20I, Pol??lard-led Men in Ma?roon asked the Men in Blue to bat first and restricted them at 170/7. In response, Windies chased down the target of 171 in the 19th over with nine balls to spare. Lendl Simmons turned out to be the hero as the right-handed opener scored an unbeaten 67 off 45 balls. He punished the Indian bowlers with his power-hitting ability smashing four sixes and as many 4s.

The incident occurred during the Knight Riders’ innings when Simmons was batting with wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin. In the 8th over, Fabian Allen bowled a straight one to Ramdin, who flicked it towards square for a single.

After completing the single, Ramdin and Simmons walked down in the?? middle to have a chat.

However, the Patriots’ skipper Brathwaite, who was unhappy with the chatter between the batsmen, took the bails off at the non-strikers’ end and appealed for a run-out. The umpire instantly dismissed the appeal, noting that the ball was dead, but a furious Brathwaite was not having any of it.

After an altercation with the umpire, Brathwaite indulged in an? argument with Ramdin. Simmon??s then stepped in from the other end, and things got ugly after that.

The umpire finally had a lengthy chat wi??th Brath?waite, and after a long delay, the game resumed.

Talking about the match, Knight Riders’ bowlers dominated the proceedings by restricting the Patriots on a paltry total of 125/7 in 20 overs. Chris Jordan was the pick of the bowlers for TKR finishing with figures of 3/30 in his four overs.
