In the realm of cricket, comparisons between players from different eras often ignite passionate debates among fans and analysts alike. Recently, this topic resurfaced when Jasprit Bumrah‘s extraordinary performance during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025-25 against Australia led many to draw parallels with cricketing legend Kapil Dev.

Bumrah’s impressive tally of 32 wickets at an astonishing average of 13.06 not only secured him the title of highest wicket-taker in Tests Down Under but also prompted discussions about his place in the pantheon of Indian cricket greats. However, Kapil, the iconic captain of India‘s 1983 World Cup-winning team, has firmly rejected these comparisons, emphasizing the futility of pitting players from distinct generations against each other.

Kapil Dev shuts down debates terming it as a generational divide

Kapil’s assertion is rooted in a deep understanding of the evolution of cricket over the decades. “Please do not compare [me with Bumrah]; you cannot compare one generation with another. The boys of today score 300 runs in a single day, which didn’t happen in our time. So, don’t compare,” he stated emphatically during a media event.

He elaborated that modern players can achieve feats that were unimaginable during his playing days, such as scoring 300 runs in a single day—a stark contrast to the more conservative scoring rates of the past. This statement underscores a critical point: cricket is not jus?t a game of numbers; it is also a reflection of th??e context in which those numbers are achieved.

The burden of expectations on Jasprit Bumrah

The pressure on contemporary players like Bumrah is immense, especially given their performances are often scrutinized against historical benchmarks set by legends like Kapil. Bumrah’s recent series performance has placed him under a spotlight that comes with both praise and expectation. Kapil’s warning serves as a reminder that such comparisons can be detrimental, potentially overshadowing individual achievements and contributions to the game.

The future of Indian cricket stars

Aside from addressing comparisons with Bumrah, Kapil also touched upon the future of other stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both players have faced critici?sm for their lacklustre performances in Australia, raising questions about their future in Tes??t cricket. Kohli managed only 190 runs in five matches, while Rohit struggled even more, averaging just 6.20 across three Tests.

When asked about their potential return to domestic cricket to rejuvenate their careers, Kapil refrained from o??ffering direct commentary, stating that it is ultimately up to the players to decide when they feel it’s time to step back.

They are very big players. Let’s hope when they think it’s the right time to play… they will call it off,” he concluded, highlighting his respect for their autonomy in making such significant career decisions.

It’s only rare these days that former cricketers clash with each other over actions during their careers. But Yograj Singh, father of India’s celebrated all-rounder and former World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh, had sparked controversy by revealing a shocking incident between him and Kapil Dev. The former Indian skipper had indirectly replied Yog??raj, w?ithout directly confronting him.

Kapil Dev denied acknowledging Yograj Singh

Dev, was spotted coming for an event and started a discussion with the journalists, who encircled him and asked for a response to Yograj’s remarks. The former World Cup winner deliberately seemed to not understand what the journalists wanted to ask.

“Kaun hai? Kaun hai? Kiski baat kar rahe ho? (Who is he? Who is he? Whom are you talking about?” asked Dev, as if he didn’t know who Yograj was. The paparazzi even told him that they were referring to Yuvraj’s father Yograj, but Dev appeared to dodge what they wanted to ask.

But it?? seemed that the conversation between the former Indian skipper and the media persons had reached a point where the questions were unavoidable for Dev. He then resorted to ignoring the mention of Y?ograj from the paparazzi and asked if they wanted to ask something else from him.

“Acchaa, aur kuch? (Anything else)” was the reaction from Dev when journalists mentioned Yograj’s name. Kapil and Yograj played alongside each other for several years. In 1977, the selectors chose Yograj over Dev for the India U-22 team playing against England in Nagpur. Yograj made his debut in the  Indian cricket team during the 1980 tour to Australia and New Zealand. However, he was mysteriously dropped ?from the team after the tour. Yograj played his l??ast ODI for India on 15 February 1981 against New Zealand.

What did Yograj Singh say?

In an interview with Samdish Bhatia, the widely popular YouTuber who features on a YouTube channel named ‘Unfiltered with Samd??is??h,?Yograj talked about his relationship with Dev.

“When Kapil Dev became captain of India, North Zone, and Haryana, he dropped me for no reason. My wife wanted me to ask Kapil questions. I told her that I would teach this bloody man a lesson,” Yograj said during the interview.

“I took my pistol out; I went to Kapil’s house in Sector 9. He came out with his mother. I abused him a dozen times. I told him because of you I have lost a friend and what you have done, you will pay for it. I told him, ‘I want to put a bullet through your head, but I am not doing it because you have a very pious mother who is standing here.?I told Shabnam, ‘Let’s go’,” he further added, revealing the in??cide??nt that happened between him and Dev.

Yograj further added that the two former Indian cricketers have not met or contacted each other since. However, after India won the 2011 World Cup, Yograj sent a paper cutting to Dev and said to him that his son (Yuvraj) did better than Dev??.

”Kapil sent me a WhatsApp text saying we will be brothers in the next life. We will be born from the same mother in the next life. He wanted to meet me. But there is a vengeance, and it still hurts,” Yograj concluded.

Indian cricketing icon Kapil Dev has thrown his support behind under-fire skipper Rohit Sharma, following India’s 10-wicket loss to Australia in the second Test at Adelaide Oval. Speaking at the launch of the Vishwa Samudra Open golf championship, Kapil addressed concerns over Rohit’s leadership and form.

Kapil Dev calls for patience with Rohit Sharma

Kapil, known for his candid opinions, urged patience from fans and critics alike, emphasizing that judging a captain on the basis of one or two poor performances is unjust. “Rohit doesn’t need to prove himself—he has done it consistently for many years,” Kapil said. “Let’s not doubt someone’s capabilities so quickly. His talent and ability are well-known, and I’m confident he will regain his form.”

Reflecting on recent success and future challenges

The 1983 World Cup-winning captain highlighted Rohit’s recent successes, reminding critics of India’s T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year under his leadership. “Six months ago, when he led India to the T20 World Cup title, nobody questioned his captaincy. If his form continues to dip, decisions will naturally follow, but for now, let’s trust his abilities and give him the time to bounce back,” Kapil added.

Rohit, who returned for the Adelaide Test after missing the f?irst match in Perth du??e to the birth of his second child, struggled for runs and scored just 3 and 6 after moving down the batting order.

India, captained by Jasprit Bumrah in Rohit’s absence, registered a commanding 295-run victory in the opening Test at Perth.

As the Indian team prepares for the third Test at The Gabba, beginning on December 14, Kapil’s remarks reflect a firm belief in Rohit’s resilience and capability to overcome setbacks. Whether Rohit can rediscover his form and lead India to success in the remainder of the series remains to be seen, but for now, the legendary all-rounder has sent a strong message of support.

Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev weighed in on the potential retirement timelines of two of modern cricket’s greatest stars, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. His comm?ents have sparked widespread discussion among fans and pundits, as both players continue to excel at the highes??t level of the sport.

Kapil Dev’s thoughts on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s retirement plans

Speaking to MyKhel, Kapil stated that retirement is a personal choice, citing examples of Ravi Shastri, who retired early, and Sachin Tendulkar, who had a longer career. He emphasized that it’s up to each individual to decide their path in life. For him, the key is to stay fit and continue playing as long as one enjoys the game.

“Ravi Shastri retired at a very early age, while Sachin Tendulkar had a longer stint. So, it is completely up to the individual to decide their ways of life. My way of thinking is to stay fit and keep playing as long as you are enjoying the game,” said Kapil.

Kapil, who captained India to their first-ever World Cup victory in 1983, emphasized that the longevity of a player’s career is primarily determined by their fitness.

“In my opinion, the period between 26 and 34 years is your prime, and thereafter the fitness of the players will ensure their longevity,” the World Cup-winning captain added.

Kohli and Rohit: Legends of the modern game

Kohli and Rohit are widely regarded as two of the finest cricketers in the history of the sport. Their extraordinary partnership has led to some unforgettable moments for Indian cricket, and their combined achievements have placed them among the game’s elite.

Together, Kohli and Rohit have become one of the most iconic duos in cricket history. Their on-field partnership has yielded 7,606 runs across all formats, ranking them 10th overall in the history of the sport, of these, 5,280 runs have come in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), making them the sixth-highest run-scoring pair in ODI history. Their understanding on the field, along with their ability to complement each other’s style, has been a significant factor in India’s success over the last decade.

Most recently, the duo announced their retirement from T20 Internationals (T20Is) after India clinched the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup final against South Africa in J??une 2024. This victory was a fitting finale for their T20I careers, as they led India to a historic win.

Current focus: Test series against Bangladesh

While their T20I chapter has come to a close, Kohli and Rohit remain focused on the ongoing two-match Test series against Bangladesh. India currently leads the series 1-0, following a strong performance in the first Test. The second and final match will take pl??ace on September 27th at Green Park in Kanpur.

As fans eagerly await the outcome of the series, questions about the future of these two cricketing giants remain. Ho?wever, as Kapil pointed out, the decision to retire will ultimately lie in the hands of Kohli and Rohit. For now, Indian cricket enthusiasts can continue to enjoy the remarkable contributions of these two legends.

With their illustrious careers still in full swing, the cricket world is left to wonder how much more magic Kohli and Ro??hit will produce before they decide to hang up their boots.

The grand finale of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium was a star-studded affair, drawing notable personalities to witness the clash between cricket giants India and Australia. However, the absence of Kapil Dev, the iconic skipper who led the Indian cricket team to its historic first ODI ??World Cup triumph in 1983, became a topic of discussion and speculation.

The absence of the cricket legend added an unexpected twist to the event, prompting fans and cricket enthusiasts to reflect on the significance of honouring the heroes of the past in celebrating the sport’s present and future.

In response to the controversy, Kapil shed light on the situation, revealing the t??ruth about his inv??itation for the pinnacle showdown in Ahmedabad.

Kapil Dev’s shocking statement

Kapil revealed that he didn’t attend the event as he wasn’t invited. Expressing a desire for the entire 1983 World cup winning team to join him for the mega battle, the 64-year-old mentioned that the omission might be due to the enormity of the event and the busy schedules of those involved, leading to oversights in extending invitations.

“I wasn’t invited. They didn’t call me so I did not go. As simple as that. I wanted the whole ’83 team to be there with me but I guess due to the fact that it’s such a big event and people are so busy handling responsibilities, sometimes they forget,” Kapil said to ABP news.

In the ultimate encounter, Australia secured their sixth ODI World Cup title, triumphing over the Men in Blue by a margin of six wickets. The formidable Australian bowling lineup showcased their prowess, limiting the dominant Indian batting to a modest total of 240 runs in the allotted 50 overs. And then, demonstrating resilience and skill, the Aussies successfully chased down the target of 241 runs in just 43 overs, losing four wickets in the process. The victory solidified Australia’s cricketing legacy, highlighting their adeptness in both batting and bowling departments on the grandest stage.

Former India captain and World Cup-winning legend, Kapil Dev, has come out in support of Pakistan’s skipper, Babar Azam, despite the team’s disappointing performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup 2023 in India.

Babar Azam’s World Cup dilemma: Batting struggle and captaincy under scrutiny

Babar, entering the tournament as the No. 1 ODI batter, faced challenges both as a batter and captain, accumulating 320 runs in nine innings at an average of 40 and a strike rate of 82.90. Pakistan‘s inability to secure a spot in the World Cup semifinals, with five losses in nine matches, led to widespread criticism, with calls for Babar to be relieved of his captaincy.

Kapil Dev lends his support to Babar Azam

In defense of Babar, Kapil pointed out the skipper’s pivotal role in guiding Pakistan to the No. 1 ranking in ODI cricket before the World Cup. The 64-year-old cautioned against hasty judgments based solely on recent performances, urging experts and fans to consider the broader contributions made by Babar to the team’s success.

“If you say that Babar Azam is not the right choice [for captaincy] today, it is because you are looking at just his current performance. He was the same captain, who made Pakistan team No.1 [in ICC ODI rankings] six months ago,” Kapil was quoted as saying by India Today.

“When someone gets out for zero, 99 per cent of the people would want him to be dropped. If an ordinary player comes and scores a brilliant hundred, then they call him a superstar. So don’t look at just current performance. Look at how he has approached the game, how much passion and talent he has,” the Chandigarh-born cricketer concluded.

World Cup journey: Pakistan’s rollercoaster ride

Pakistan started the World Cup on a positive note with victories over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka, the latter being a record-breaking chase. In cricket, few moments stand out as iconic as those that occur in the Cricket World Cup. Over the years, this tournament has witnessed extraordinary performances etched into cricket history. One such moment was Kapil Dev‘s legendary 175 not out against Zimbabwe in the ODI World Cup 1983.

Fast forward to the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 in India, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell played an innings of great significance against Afghanistan. The Kew-born cricketer ??smashed 201 runs in just 128 balls, making it the first double-century while chasing in the ODI format of the game.

Following Maxwell’s heroics on Tuesday, Indian politician Shashi Tharoor eloquently a??rticulated the parallels between the notable historic World Cup knocks of Kapil ?and Maxwell, highlighting the enduring magic of the sport.

The Classic Kapil Dev Knock in ODI World Cup 1983

The 1983 World Cup holds a special place in the hearts of Indian cricket fans. Kapil, leading an underdog Indian side, faced a perilous situation when India were reduced to 17/5 against Zimbabwe. The scenario seemed bleak, but the right-handed batter, with steely determination, stepped up to the occasion. He played a blistering innings of 175, not out off just 138 balls, rescuing India and propelling them to victory. It was an innings that showcased the Chandigarh-born cricketer’s brilliant stroke play and a level of grit and determination that transcended cricket.

Glenn Maxwell’s Marvel in ODI World Cup 2023

Moving to the ongoing edition of the ODI World Cup, Maxwell found himself in a tough situation against Afghanistan. In the crucial league-stage encounter, the Aussies were reeling at 91/7 while facing the daunting task of chasing 292. It was a situation that required someone to step up and take charge and Maxwell did the same. The 35-year-old’s staggering knock of unbeaten 201, alongside the 202-run partnership for the eighth wicket with skipper Pat Cummins, led the five-time World champions to an fiercly fought three-wicket victory against the Afghans.

“I never thought that, in my lifetime, I would see an innings to rival @therealkapildev’ s immortal 175* against Zimbabwe in 1983. @Gmaxi_32 has just shown us all that miracles do repeat themselves. Just amazing. #WorldCup2023 #AUSvsAFG,” Tharoor mentioned in his tweet.

The evolution of Indian cricket from being minnows in the 70s to becoming a cricketing powerhouse has indeed been remarkable. The rise of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the introduction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has significantly contributed to the financial growth of the sport in the country. Indian players now have access to various ??avenues of income, including high-paid central contracts, lucrative IPL deals, and lucrative brand endorsements.

Kapil Dev feels there is always room for improvement:

However, Kapil Dev, the iconic ca??ptain who led India to victory in the 1983 World Cup, has expressed concerns about the current generation of players. Kapil opined that modern-day cricketers are very confident, but the negative thing about that is the players believe that they know everything. He believes that the current cricketers should talk to former ones as their experience can help them grow.

“Differences come out, the good thing about these players is their confidence. However, a neg??ative aspect is their belief that they know everything. It’s hard to put it any differently. They are indeed confident, but it seems they think they don’t need to seek advice from anyone. What we believe is that experienced individuals can provide valuable assistance.?/em> Dev was quoted as saying by the Week.

The Chandigarh-born cricketer further commented on the influence of money on the players, stating that sometimes excessive wealth leads to arrogance??, making these cricketers believe they possess all the knowledge. He emphasized that many players could benefit from? seeking help.

Sometimes too much money comes, arrogance comes. These cricketers think they know everything. That’s the difference. I would say there are so many cricketers who need help. When Sunil Gavaskar is there, why can’t you talk? Where is the ego? There is no ego as such. They feel ‘we are good enough’. Maybe they are good enough, but with extra help from somebody who has seen 50 seasons of cricket, he knows things. Listening sometimes can change your thought,” the 64-year-old concluded.

This comes after his teammate Sunil Gavaskar had said that while the older generation of players like Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag. and ?others used to come?? to him for guidance with the bat, none of the current era players have done the same and he doesn’t know why.

“No, no one has come. Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS?? Laxman regularly came to me. And they would approach me with ?a specific problem and you could tell them something which you had observed. I don’t have an ego about this, I could go and talk to them but since there are two coaches ?Rahul Dravid and Vikram Rathore ?so sometimes you hold back since you don’t want to confuse them with too much information,?/em> Gavaskar said to the Indian Express

The recent performances of the Indian cricket team in the ODI series against the West Indies have raised some concerns. Despite dismissing the West Indies batting lineup for a low score in the first ODI, the Indian team faced difficulties during their run-chase. Notably, they lost five wickets before the experienced batters, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, even came to the crease. Rohit ?had to bat wi??th only Kohli remaining among recognized batters in the order, indicating a lack of depth in the batting lineup.

In the second ODI, India decided to rest both Rohit and Kohli, and as a result, the batting line-up collapsed, getting bowled out for just 181? runs and su??ffering a six-wicket loss. This outcome highlighted the team’s overreliance on their top-order batters and the lack of stability in the middle order.
