Cricket has been blessed with several batting maestros, but few names resonate as profoundly as Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, and Virat Kohli. Sachin, known as ‘The Master Blaster’, has redefined the art of batting with his longevity and versatility. Lara, ‘The Prince of Trinidad’, enthralled fans with his flair and record-breaking innings.

Similarly, Kohli, the modern-day titan, brings unmatched energy, consistency, and adaptability across all cricket formats. The debate over who stands supreme among these legends has been reignited by none other than Justin Langer, a former Australian cricketer and coach, who has no??w w??eighed in with his personal choice.

Justin Langer picks the best batter he has seen

In a statement that has sparked a fresh wave of discussions, Langer has declared superstar Kohli as the best batter he has ever seen. Langer acknowledged the greatness of legends like Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, and Lara, even noting he would pay to watch Lara bat. However, the former Aussie coach emphasized that if it came to betting his life and last dollar on a batter, Kohli’s unmatched skill and composure under pressure would make him the ultimate choice.

“You asked me Mark why I said yesterday that Virat Kohli is the best player that I have ever seen. There were a few raised eyebrows, but he actually is. We talk about Sachin? What a player. It was one of the privileges of my life to play against Sachin Tendulkar and, of course, with Ricky Ponting and Brian Lara. If I had my last rupee or my last dollar, I would pay to watch Brian Lara bat, but if I had my life and my last dollar, and both of them together, I would have Virat Kohli batting for me,” said Langer while c??ommentating on Day ??2 of the Boxing Day Test between Australia and India.

The comparison of the trio

Sachin Tendulkar – With 100 international centuries, Tendulkar’s legacy is built on an incredible ability to adapt to any condition, making him a legend not just in statistics but in spirit. His influence extends beyond the game, inspiring countless cricketers, including Kohli himself.

Brian Lara – Lara’s contribution to cricket is often highlighted by his record-breaking 400 not out in Test cricket, showcasing his extraordinary talent and capacity for big scores. His elegance at the crease and ability to turn games around with his bat have left an indelible mark on the sport.

Virat Kohli – Kohli’s era is defined by his fitness, mental toughness, and relentless pursuit of excellence. His consistency across Test, ODI, and T20 cricket, combined with his aggressive captaincy, has set new standards. Langer’s preference for Kohli might be seen as an acknowledgment of how modern cricket values these attributes, especially in an age where players are expected to excel in all formats.

In the world of cricket, comparisons between players from different eras or nationalities often ignite debates and discussions among fans and experts alike. Recently, former Australian cricket coach Justin Langer made headlines by drawing an intriguing parallel between India’s leading fast bowler, and the legendary Wasim Akram of Pakistan. This comparison has not only flattered the Indian star but has also sparked a conversation about the art of fast bowling and the legacy of one of cricket’s greatest bowlers.

Justin Langer’s high praise for the Indian pace spearhead

Langer, who has faced some of the best bowlers in his illustrious career, likened Jasprit Bumrah to Akram, reckoning that Bumrah is like the former Pakistan captain. Langer’s commendation highlights Bumrah’s skill in swinging the ball both ways, his pinpoint accuracy, and his competitive spirit.

“I would hate to face him. He is like Wasim Akram. For me, he is a right-hand version of Wasim Akram, and every time I am asked the question, ‘Who is the best bowler you have ever faced? I say Wasim Akram,” said Langer while speaking to The Nightly.

Indian star’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia, Bumrah has proven himself as a formidable force. With 21 wickets in three Tests at an average of 10.90 and a strike rate of 25.14, including two five-wicket hauls, Bumrah has been the spearhead of India’s bowling attack. His best figures in the series are an impressive 6/76.

Parallels between the two greats

Like Akram, Bumrah has an unconventional action that deceives batters. His ability to deliver pinpoint yorkers, particularly in crunch situations, mirrors Akram’s playbook. Both share a knack for swinging the ball late, which often leaves batters guessing.

Both Akram and Bumrah are known for their? mental fortitude. They thrive under pressure, often rising to the occasion when their team need??s them the most. This psychological edge, combined with their technical prowess, makes them formidable opponents.

Additionally, Akram was known for his match-winning spells, like his famous 5/28 in the 1992 World Cup final. Similarly, Bumrah’s performances in crucial matches, including his 6/27 against England in 2018, have shown he can change the course of a game single-handedly. Further, Bumrah played a major role during India’s victorious campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024.

MS Dhoni has been the centre of attention in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Despite Chennai Super Kings (CSK) failing to qualify for the playoffs, the wicketkeeper-batter’s presence undoubtedly captivated fans throughout the league. Although IPL 2023 concluded with a victory for CSK, Dhoni, rather than opting for a triumphant farewell, decided to extend his career for another season. Before the commencement of the cash-rich league, he gave the captaincy role to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Despite battling a persistent injury throughout the season, the former Indian skipper showcased his immense batting prowess on th?e field.

Many renowned sporting personalities gave their opinion regarding the huge fan following of Dhoni. Adding to the discourse, Justin Langer, the head coach of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), contributed his insights on the topic.

Justin Langer spills beans on the hero-worshipping of MS Dhoni

In a discussion on the BBC Sports weekly podcast, Stumped, Langer recounted his experience witnessing the immense fan backing for Dhoni in the game venues. The former Australian cricketer expressed his astonishment at the sea of yellow jerseys filling the stands, labelling the fans’ enthusiasm as extraordinary. Langer also highlighted the phenomenon of hero worship in India, remarking on its unbelievable nature.

“It’s extraordinary. I heard about it first; then we played them [CSK] twice. They came to Lucknow, and our capacity crowd [in Ekana Stadium] is about 50,000, and honestly, there would have been 48,000 MS Dhoni number seven shirts. I couldn’t believe it, and then we went to CSK, and there wasn’t 98%; there was 100%. And it’s unbelievable. The hero worship in India is unbelievable,” Langer told BBC.

Langer voices his concern against the criticism faced by Hardik Pandya

Talking further in the podcast, Langer highlighted the dual nature of hero worship and recounted the instances of the Indian crowd booing Hardik Pandya, the newly appointed captain of Mumbai Indians (MI). The 53-year-old emphasized that it was very sad to see Hardik getting hatred from the fans despite the fact that he was chosen as the vice-captain of Team India. Langer concluded his statement by saying that Jonty Rhodes and Morne Morkel?? advised him to ignore this act of the fans and move on rather than being upset.

“And I saw the flip side of it as well because Rohit Sharma is a huge hero in India as India captain. And what happened with Mumbai Indians this year. Hardik Pandya took over as the captain from Rohit Sharma. The much-loved Rohit Sharma. And it was really sad to watch. You know, he got booed every game by the Indian crowds. He’s the vice-captain of the Indian T20I squad. So, I saw both sides of it. I learned this from Jonty Rhodes and Morne Morkel, who’d been to the IPL before. Rather than getting upset by it, go with the flow,” Langer stated.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has kickstarted the search for the next head coach of the senior national men’s team. With Rahul Dravid‘s tenure set to conclude in June 2024, the board is actively soliciting applications for the role, which is expected to span approximately three years. Following recent remarks by BCCI secretary Jay Shah indicating a willingness to consider overseas candidates, sp??eculation has swirled regarding potential succe?ssors.

Key candidates for the India’s head coach job

Amid the mix of names floated, Justin Langer stands out prominently. Langer, who most recently guided the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, boasts significant coaching experience, having previously guided the Australian national team for a four-year stint. His tenure saw Australia navigate through turbulent times post-Sandpaper Gate, reclaiming the Ashes and clinching the T20 World Cup 2021. Alongside Langer, notable contenders such as Gautam Gambhir, Ricky Ponting and Stephen Fleming have also surfaced in discussions.

Justin Langer’s stance

Despite being touted as a potential candidate, Langer recently addressed speculation regarding his interest in coaching the Indian cricket team. During an appearance on BBC’s Stumped podcast, Langer revealed his reluctance to undertake such a pivotal responsibility at present. However, his subsequent comments sparked controversy within the cricketing fraternity.

“It would be an amazing job, (but) I have (ruled myself out). I also know that it’s an all-encompassing role, and having done it for four years with the Australian team, honestly, it’s exhausting. And that’s the Australian job,” Langer said.

KL Rahul’s advice

Langer also recounted a conversation with KL Rahul, captain of the LSG, shedding light on the challenges associated with coaching the Indian team. Rahul, according to Langer, emphasized the immense pressure and political intricacies inherent in the role, surpassing even the demands of the IPL. These insights from Rahul provided a sobering perspective on the realities of the Indian coaching role, prompting introspection on Langer’s part.

“You never say never. And the pressure of doing it in India?I was talking to KL Rahul, and he said, ‘You know, if you think there’s pressure and politics in an IPL team, multiply that by a thousand. (That’s) coaching India. That was a good bit of advice, I guess. It would be an awesome job, but not for me at the moment,” Langer concluded.

Justin Langer, the head coach of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), recounted the tale of his frustration during the 3rd match of the Ashes 2019. England were in a favorable position against Australia, and Ben Stokes single-handedly turned the tide, clinching the victory for England. Langer vividly recalls his anger boiling over, leading to the memorable incident of kicking the dustbin in frustration during that pivo?tal innings.

Justin Langer recalls the moment

Upon inquiry from a fan, Langer elaborated on the pivotal moment. He stressed the significance of defeating England, emphasizing that in that particular test match, England required merely 4 runs to secure victory. Stokes was at the crease alongside Jack Leach when the critical incident unfolded during fielding. Pat Cummins threw the ball to Nathan Lyon, who failed to grab it,? resulting in a missed run-out opportunit??y.

Consequently, England clinched the match by a mere 1 wicket. In the heat of the moment, Langer’s frustration boiled over, leading him to kick a nearby dustbin, an act captured on video and swiftly circulated online. However, moments later, Langer realized his error and promptly restored the dustbin to its rightful place.

In the third test match, England found themselves in a precarious situation, requiring 359 runs to win in their final innings. The target seemed daunting, especially as they stumbled with a shaky start, losing 2 wickets with only 15 runs on the board. However, Joe Root (77) and Joe Denly (50) formed a resilient partnership, adding 126 runs and revitalizing England’s chances. Despite this effort, England continued to lose wickets steadily.

With the score at 286 runs and 9 wickets down, England had just one wicket remaining and still needed 73 runs to secure victory. Stokes and Leach stepped up to the crease, forging a crucial partnership of 76 runs, ultimately clinching the win for England. Stokes’ unbeaten score of 135 earned him the Player of the Match title, recognizing his exceptional performance.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) faced a 19-run defeat against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 64th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. After being asked to bat first, DC posted an imposing total of 208 for 4 in 20 overs, fueled by notable contributions from Abhishek Porel (58 off 33) and Tristan Stubbs (57 off 25).

In response, LSG’s batting lineup struggled against DC bowlers, and even their set batter, Nicholas Pooran, departed after playing a crucial knock of 61 runs in 27 balls. As DC appeared to gain full control of the match, Lucknow’s bowler, Arshad Khan, took charg?e and began to dominate the opposition bowlers. Arshad played an unbeaten innings of 58?? runs in 33 balls. Despite falling short of securing victory for his team, his performance earned accolades from fans and sports personalities alike.

Justin Langer showers praise on Arshad Khan for his performance

During the post-match press conference, LSG head coach Justin Langer praised Arshad for his innings, highlighting him as a talented all-rounder who demonstrated his potential in Tuesday’s game. Langer further suggested that Arshad could serve as a valuable all-round option for the team due to his exceptional bowling skills.

“I think Arshad is a very, very good cricketer. He swung the ball early, he is a good fieldsman and to be able to bat like that, he is a very good package. I thought, while watching the tournament, that he has good potential and he showed some of that tonight. Particularly with his bowling, he can be a real handful and a very good all-round cricketer,” Langer said in the post-match press conference.

Langer cites Lucknow’s pitch as the best surface to play in IPL 2024

Continuing t?he discussion with reporters, Langer emphasized that the pitch at Ekana Stadium in Lu?cknow is the top cricketing surface, standing out for its balanced contest between bat and ball. The 53-year-old also pointed out that, unlike numerous matches in the tournament where batting has largely overshadowed bowling, this pitch has maintained an equilibrium between the two facets of the game.

“I think Lucknow wicket is the best cricket wicket in the competition because there has been a real contest between bat and ball. Whereas a lot of this tournament has been one-sided towards the bat. We haven’t capitalized on the powerplay like some of the other teams have. I thought if we had been a little bit more intelligent with our batting today, it was a chaseable score on this wicket,” the former cricketer concluded.

In a gripping encounter at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) clinched a remarkable victory against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), powered by a stellar performance by Quinton de Kock and Mayank Yadav. Apart from the duo, left-arm spinner M Siddharth was also impressive. After the game, LSG head Coach Justin Langer unveiled the intriguing tale behind Siddharth’s strategic dismissal of cricketing maestro Virat Kohli.

M Siddharth’s memorable outing

In what turned out to be a captivating match, L?SG displayed sheer dominance, securing a convincing win by 28 runs against the formidable RCB. De Kock and Mayank emerged as the heroes for the Super Giants, guiding them to an emphatic victory.

However, it was the left-arm spin sensation Siddharth who stole the spotlight with his exceptional performance. In just his second match in the IPL, Siddharth managed to claim the prized scalp of Kohli, RCB’s star batsman, with a meticulously planned strategy.

Following a couple of rapid deliveries, Siddha??rth opted for a slower pace. The change in speed caught Kohli off guard, causing him to mistime his flick shot and produce a leading edge towards the point fi?elder.

The Promise fulfilled

Following the match, a video surfaced on social media platform X, where LSG’s head coach Langer narrated an intriguing anecdote about Siddharth’s commitment to dismissing Kohli. Langer disclosed that he had noticed Siddharth’s prowess with the arm ball during practice sessions and challenged him to get the wicket of the RCB superstar.

Impressively, Siddharth responded affirmatively to Langer’s challenge, assuring him of his capability. True to his word, Siddharth executed his plan flawlessly during the match, trapping Kohli with a deceptive delivery that resulted in an early dismissal.

“Had never spoken to him before… I saw bowl an arm ball. The first thing to come out of my mouth after meeting M Siddharth was ‘Hey Sid! you reckon you can get Virat out for us?’ He goes, ‘Yes sir!’. And what did he do? He gets him out,” Langer said in the LSG change room.

Siddharth’s journey in IPL

Notably, Siddharth’s journey to IPL success has been marked by resilience and determination. Hailing from Jakarta, Indonesia, Siddharth relocated to Chennai at a young age to pursue his cricketing aspirations. Following an impressive performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Tamil Nadu in 2019, he was signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for IPL 2020.

However, despite his potential, he didn’t get the opportunity to showcase his talent and was subsequently released by the team. He then joined the Delhi Capitals (DC) but suffered an injury du??ring the latter part of the tournament in the UAE, leading to his release from the squad once again.

Subsequently, Siddharth spent two seasons as a net bowler with the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) before LSG acquired hi?s services for INR 2.4 crore in the auction for the 17th season of the lucrative league.

Former Australia coach Justin Langer expressed concerns over the team management’s consideration of using Cameron Green as an opener to fill the void left by David Warner‘s retirement from Test cricket.

Opening conundrum after David Warner’s retirement

Warner’s departure from the longest format has created a significant gap in the team, and potential replacements for the opening slot, including Marcus Harris and Matt Renshaw, are being evaluated. Unconventional options such as Green and Steve Smith are also in the discussion.

Justin Langer expresses reservations over Cameron Green as an opener

Langer, speaking to Perth radio station 6PR, conveyed his hope that Green won’t be tasked with opening as he has no prior experience in that role. The former coach believes Green’s name is being considered because the selectors are keen to include him in the team.

“I hope they don’t open with him. He hasn’t opened before. The only reason he is in the discussion about it is that the Australian team and selectors obviously want to get him into the team. But sometimes you have to wait. I believe you have to have a specialist opener,” Langer said.

Langer advocates for specialist opener in light of upcoming home series

While Langer acknowledges that both Green and Smith could handle the opening role, he emphasizes the need for a specialist, especially with the upcoming home series against India and the Ashes against England.

“We tried this with Matthew Wade. We tried this with Aaron Finch, who selflessly did it for the team. And I am sure Cameron Green or Steve Smith might do that. But I believe with India coming over next year and then the Ashes in Australia, the sooner they get into a specialist opener, the better, because it is a very specialised position,” the 53-year-old concluded.

Green’s record in Test cricket

Green, making his Test debu?t in 2020, has consistently batted in the lower middle order across all 24 Tests he has played. The talented all-rounder holds a respectable batting record, averaging 33.59 with one century and six half-centuries.

Former Australia opener and renowned coach, Justin Langer, recently shared insights into his decision to join the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as the head coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.

The transition came after LSG decided to revamp its team management, parting ways with figures like Andy Flower and Gautam Gambhir. Langer, with an impressive coaching track record, was convinced to take on the new challenge by LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka.

Justin Langer’s success in T20 franchise leagues

Langer brings a wealth of experience to LSG, having previously coached the Perth Scorchers to three Big Bash League (BBL) titles from 2012 to 2018. His success extends beyond franchise leagues, as he played a pivotal role in guiding the Australian cricket team through challenging times, culminating in an Ashes victory and the T20 World Cup triumph in 2021.

LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka’s convincing challenge to Langer

In a video posted by LSG on social media platform X, Langer revealed that he received a message from the LSG management, leading to a discussion about a potential job offer. He highlighted how owner Goenka presented him with a challenge that he hadn’t anticipated. The nature of the challenge and Goenka’s vision for the team played a significant role in convincing Langer to take on the role of head coach.

“Well, it was so funny because I was here in Perth and I received a text message asking me if I had any interest in coaching in the IPL. It was from Vinay, telling me that the owner Sanjiv was in London at the same time and would I be interested in having a coffee with him. And I thought ‘Well, I have got nothing to lose’ and I went and met the boss,” Langar said.

“From there, we had a very nice conversation. He is a really good sales man, the boss, because the last thing he said to me was ‘you know Justin, you have had a great playing career, you have had a very good coaching career until now. But, you can’t consider yourself a great coach until you have won the IPL.I was like ‘oh, good sales man skills. I like that boss, man. We had some conversations after that. We continue to have good conversations. I am thrilled to be the head coach of this franchise,”  the 53-year-old added.

Praise for LSG captain KL Rahul and Virat Kohli

In his conversation with the franchise, Langer also praised the qualities of LSG skipper KL Rahul and acknowledged the impact of Virat Kohli. Drawing from his experience as Australia‘s coach, Langer expressed admiration for the duo and their contributions to the game.

“When I was an Australian coach and we had a series against India, I never used to relax until Virat Kohli and KL Rahul got out. Because he’s (Rahul) so dangerous player and he’s such a beautiful elegant looking player,” the Perth-born cricketer concluded.

LSG captain KL Rahul did not perform at his peak during the recently concluded IPL season. He withdrew from the tournament mi??dway due to an injury sustained in a clash against RCB. Rahul managed to score 274 runs, featuring two half-centuries, at an average of 34.25 in nine matches?.
