England’s promising fast bowler, Josh Tongue, has been dealt a major setback as he has been ruled out of the upcoming white-ball tour of West Indies due to an undisclosed injury. The unfortunate incident occurred during the England Lions training camp in the UAE, forcing Tongue to miss both the three-match ODI series and the five-match T20I series.

Josh Tongue’s white-ball debut delayed

Tongue, who made his Test debut against Ireland at Lord’s earlier this year, was aiming for his international white-ball debut in the West Indies tour. The young fast bowler made a notable impact in the Lord’s Ashes Test, claiming five wickets, including dismissing star batsmen Steve Smith and David Warner twice.

Replacement announced

Durham pacer Matthew Potts has been named as Tongue’s replacement for the three-match ODI series. Potts, part of the current training camp in the UAE, is set to fill the void left by Tongue. Both Tongue and Potts recently secured two-year ECB contracts for 2023-24, reflecting their potential and contributions to the team.

T20I replacement yet to be decided

While a replacement has been confirmed for the ODI leg, no announcement has been made regarding the replacement for the T20I series. The absence of Tongue is a significant blow, and England will be carefully considering the available options to strengthen their pace attack for the shorter format games.

ODI series to kick-off in Antigua

The three-match ODI series is scheduled to commence on Sunday, December 3, in Antigua. The subsequent match on December 6 will also take place at the same venue, with the final clash set for December 9 in Barbados. Barbados will additionally host the inaugural T20I series game on December 12.

Despite the setback, the England team will aim to regroup and adapt to the absence of Tongue as they face the West Indies in what promises to be an exciting and challenging series.

England suffered a major blow ahead of their upcoming white-ball series against New Zealand as their seamer Josh Tongue has been ruled out of the T20I leg due to an injury. The announcement comes just days before the commencement of the much-anticipated series as the England Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Tongue’s injury would keep him sidelined for the entire home T20I series against Blackcaps.

It is worth mentioning that England is set to engage in a four-match T20I series followed by an equal number of One Day Internationals (ODIs) against the visiting New Zealand side starting from August 30.

Tongue had recently earned his maiden call-up to the England white-ball squad after showcasing his talent and potential with remarkable performances in the red-ball format against Ireland and Australia. However, his promising debut in the white-ball setup has been temporarily halted due to the unfortunate injury.

Tongue’s absence marks the second setback for the English team ahead of the series, as they also lost John Turner from the squad due to a side problem a few days back. Turner’s unavailability had already raised concerns in the England camp, and Tongue’s unfortunate injury exacerbates the team’s challenges further.

ECB announces Chris Jordan as Josh Tongue’s replacement

The England selectors have named experienced campaigner Chris Jordan as Tongue’s replacement in the T20I squad. Jordan is England’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is and brings a wealth of experience and skill to the side.

In addition to his absence from the international series, Tongue will also miss an important clash in The Hundred Competition 2023. Tongue’s injury rules him out of The Hundred eliminator match, where he was set to represent his Manchester Originals against Southern Brave.

England’s revised squad for the T20 series against New Zealand:

Jos Buttler (c), Rehan Ahmed, Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Luke Wood

Jonny Bairstow, the England wicketkeeper, has been hailed as a hero by his teammate Joshua Tongue for his quick thinking and actions during a pitch invasion incident on the first day of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s on Wednesday (June 28). Bairstow’s intervention prevented a potential disruption to the match and protected the playing surface.

After winning the toss and opting to field, England were preparing to begin the second over of the match when the game was abruptly halted by the presence of a group of protestors from the organization Just Stop Oil. The protestors had invaded the ground, carrying orange-colored chalk and paint.

As Stuart Broad prepared to deliver the second over, two men wearing Just Stop Oil T-shirts sprinted toward the pitch with their hands filled with orange powder. However, Bairstow swiftly reacted, intercepting one of the intruders and preventing any damage to the wicket. He lifted the man and carried him to the boundary line, where stewards took over the situation.

Following the incident, Bairstow had to leave the field temporarily to change his whites and equipment. Meanwhile, ground staff attended to the outfield, ensuring that the pitch was not affected. Once Bairstow returned to the ground and the powder was cleared, play resumed.

Speaking in a press conference after Day 1, Tongue, who witnessed Bairstow’s intervention, lauded the England wicketkeeper as a hero for his actions. Tongue emphasized the significance of Bairstow’s quick response, as any disruption to the pitch could have resulted in a potential abandonment of the game.

“If Jonny didn’t do what he did, who knows where the game could be now? It could’ve been called off. He’s a bit of a hero! My back was turned. I heard Jonny shout and then saw him running after him. I probably wouldn’t have gone towards them, just in case they had anything else on them,” Tongue said.

Speaking of the match, despite the protest drama and England’s decision to bowl first under overcast conditions, the visitors were on top of the day’s play on Wednesday as David Warner (66) and Usman Khawaja (18) got them off to a great start. However Tongue, on his Ashes debut, got rid of both the openers but Steve Smith (85 not out) and Travis Head (77) helped Australia continue their dominance over proceedings. Nevertheless, late in the day, England’s off-spinner Joe Root provided his team with renewed hope by taking two crucial wickets. Although, the visitors ended the day on 339/5.

England registered a 10-wicket triumph over Ireland in their one-off Test on Saturday (June 03) at Lord’s Cricket Stadium in London. The Irish side did put up some fight with a stunning 163-run partnership by lower-order batters Mark Adair and Andy McBrine, that hugely frustrated the hosts.

Adair smacked his maiden Test half-century, a remarkable 88 off 76 balls containing 12 boundaries and two sixes. Similarly, McBrine played an exceptional knock as he left stranded on 86 not out and Ireland were finally bundled out for 362, earning a 10-run lead.

Debutant Josh Tongue (5/66) celebrated his maiden stint for England by claiming a sensational five-wicket haul, becoming only the the ninth English player to do so at Lord’s and first since Graham Onions in 2009. Tongue secured his spot on the honours board by dismissing Fionn Hand (7) shortly after Matthew Potts (1/77) broke Adair and McBrine’s stand.

Earlier, England declared their first innings after a massive 524/4 on the board in reply to Ireland’s 172. Ben Duckett smashed a tremendous 182, featuring 24 fours and a six. Ollie Pope, however, was the standout performer with his maiden double hundred. Pope smacked 205 off 208 balls, including 22 fours and three sixes.

Brief Scores: Ireland 172 (James McCollum 36, Curtis Campher 33; Stuart Broad 5/51, Jack Leach 2/35) & 362/9 (Mark Adair 88, Andy McBrine 86*; Josh Tongue 4/66) lost to England 524/4 decl. (Ollie Pope 205, Ben Duckett 182; Andy McBrine 2/99) & 12/0.

England are all set to kick off the summer with a one-off Test against Ireland, starting today at the iconic Lord’s in London. The hosts have already announced their squad where they picked uncapped seam bowler Josh Tongue, leaving out experienced campaigner Chris Woakes.

Notably, Woakes has been absent from England’s Test matches since March last year, during which he took three wickets against the West Indies in Grenada. After which he was sidelined for the entire 2022 home summer due to a cartilage injury in his left knee. However, he made a comeback to England’s white-ball squads during the winter and was part of the England’s T20 World Cup winning squad.

Despite being fit enough, Woakes, who has a brilliant record in Lord’s, was not picked for the one-off Test against the Irish side which left fans in disbelief. Since the start of 2021, He has taken a total of 40 wickets, with an impressive 27 of those coming in just five Tests at Lord’s. His outstanding record includes three instances of taking five wickets and a remarkable ten-wicket haul.

Additionally, the Warwickshire cricketer has a batting average of 61 at this venue, and he even scored his only Test century at Lord’s. In the previous Test match against Ireland at Lord’s, Woakes exhibited his bowling prowess by taking six wickets, resulting in the visitors collapsing for a mere 38 runs in the fourth innings.

However, skipper Ben Stokes was of the opinion that Tongue brings the ‘X Factor?and he wanted to explore if the uncapped pacer has what it takes to achieve success at the highest level. The Christchurch-born acknowledged Woakes as a highly experienced player who brings a lot to the team but he sees this as an opportunity for Tongue. Stokes said that Woakes understood the game plan of the team and highlighted the importance for all the bowlers to be prepared to play in every game during the summer.

“It was a hard decision to make. We know Woakesy is a very experienced player and what he will offer this team when he plays. We see this as a great opportunity to see someone like Josh Tongue go out and play in a Test. We might need someone like him throughout the summer. It gives me an opportunity to see what his character is like and what he is like to operate with as a captain. Woakesy completely understood that. We would plan too much because we do not know what will happen, but all the bowlers know they need to be prepared to play every game this summer. It is exciting we are able to see another pace bowler come through the ranks,” said Stokes as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

“Having someone who is able to bowl with that extra pace so he can come on and change the way the game is going and have that ‘X-factor? is always great to have in your side. I am looking forward to getting him involved and watching him get his Test cap,” added Stokes.

betvisa liveJosh Tongue – Cricket Times - betvisa cricket http://betvisa68.com/2023/05/josh-tongue-to-debut-as-england-unveil-playing-xi-for-the-one-off-test-against-ireland/ Wed, 31 May 2023 03:46:45 +0000 http://betvisa68.com/?p=81227

The playing XI for England’s one-off Test against Ireland at Lord’s on June 1 has been announced. Josh Tongue, the Worcestershire seamer, is set to make his Test debut in the four-day red-ball contest. However, James Anderson and Ollie Robinson, will not be able to play in this Test due to injuries, but they are anticipated to recover in time for the first Ashes Test.

As a result of Anderson and Robinson’s absence, Tongue, who has an impressive record of 162 first-class wickets from 47 matches, has been given the opportunity to fill in. The 25-year-old will join the likes of Stuart Broad and Matthew Potts in England’s seam attack.

It is worth mentioning that Tongue has been in excellent form this season, taking 11 wickets in four County Championship matches. Among his notable achievements was dismissing the genius Australian batter Steve Smith during Worcestershire’s match against Sussex.

Jonny Bairstow, who has recovered from his injury, will be making his return to Test cricket after last playing in August. During the previous summer, the wicketkeeper-batter had an impressive performance for England, smashing four centuries in six Tests.

Bairstow accumulated a total of 681 runs at an average of 75.66, with a strike rate of 96.59. But he unfortunately suffered a leg injury while playing golf in September. Harry Brook, who replaced Bairstow during his absence, had a strong start to his Test career as well, scoring four centuries in six matches. Brook, who grabbed headlines recently with his IPL stint for Sunrisers Hyderabad, has retained his spot in the team and will be batting at No. 5.

England’s playing XI for the one-off Test vs Ireland: Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jonny Bairstow (wicketkeeper), Stuart Broad, Matthew Potts, Josh Tongue, Jack Leach.
