Former Indian pacer Joginder Sharma has voiced his reservations about Gautam Gambhir‘s long-term prospects as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Despite Gambhir’s promising start, Sharma believed his tenure may not be sustainable.

Gautam Gambhir’s promising start

Gambhir, who succeeded Rahul Dravid as head coach, has had an impressive beginning to his coaching career with the Indian team. He led India to a 3-0 victory in the T20I series against Sri Lanka, raising expectations that he could take the team to new heights. His contract runs until the ODI World Cup 2027, giving ??him ample time to make a significant impact.

Joginder Sharma’s concerns

In an interview with YouTuber Shubhankar Mishra, Joginder expressed his doubts about Gambhir’s ability to manage the team over the long haul. He highlighted potential issues that could arise from Gambhir’s decision-making style. Joginder believed Gambhir’s strong-willed nature and unique decisions might lead to conflicts with players, making it challenging for him to maintain his role for an extended period.

“Gautam Gambhir team ko sambhalne waala hai lekin par mera ye manna hai ki Gautam Gambhir jyada lambe samay tak tik nahi payega” (Gautam Gamb??hir is the one to manage the team, but I believe that Gauta??m Gambhir will not be able to stay for a long time), Joginder said.

“Kyunki Gautam Gambhir ke apne hi kuch faisle hote hain. Ho sakta hai kisi player se man motaaw ho jaye. Mai Virat Kohli ki baat nahi kar raha hun. Gautam Gambhir ke faisle kai baar aise ho jaate hain ki dusro ko pasand nahi aate” (This is because Gautam Gambhir has his own decisions. It might happen that he has a disagreement with a player. I am not talking about Virat Kohli. Many times, Gautam Gambhir’s decisions are such that others do not like them), the 40-year-old added.

Reasons that can cut short Gambhir’s career

Joginder further also commended Gambhir’s straightforward and honest approach, emphasizing that Gambhir focuses on his work sincerely and with great honesty rather than seeking approval or flattering others:

“Gautam Gambhir seedhi baat karne waala hai. Wo kisi ke paas jaane waala nahi hai. Gautam Gambhir chaplusi karne waala banda nahi hai. Usko credit dene waale hum log hain. Wo apna kaam karta hai, sacche dil se karta hai, badi imaandaari se karta hai” (Gautam Gambhir speaks directly. He is not someone who wi??ll go to anyone. Gautam Gambhir is not a person who flatters. We are the ones who give him credit. He does his work, does it sincerely, and does it ??with great honesty), Joginder concluded.

On September 24, 2007, India defeated Pakistan at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg to become the first-ever World T20 champions. It was a nail-biting finish as Joginder Sharma bowled a slower one to dismiss ????Misbah-ul-Haq in the final-over, taking India home.

Chasing India’s score of 157 runs, Pakistan was 9 wickets down and needed 13 runs in the last over with Misbah playing brilliantly at one end. In place of experienced Harbhajan Singh, captain MS Dhoni decided to go with Haryana’s medium-pacer Joginder Sharma.

Joginder gave seven runs in his first two balls. The equation now was that Pakistan just needed 6 runs off 4 balls. On his next delivery, Joginder changed his length an??d bowled a slower one. Misbah tried to scoop but wa??s caught by Sreesanth standing on fine-leg.

In the air?Sreesanth takes it! India WIN!“, screamed Ravi Shastri (now India’s head coach) in the commentary box.

The final-over hero Joginder Sharma is now serving as DSP in Haryana Police. On the 12 anniversary of the 2007 WC final??, Joginder posted a message on Twitter thanking all cricket fans for their love and sport.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was recently live on one of the sports broadcasting channel in India, Star Sports. In an exclusive?? snippet released by the channel, Shah Rukh was asked to name movies based on Indian cricketers.

For World no.1 Test all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, Baadshah Khan said, “I think he is a mystery. You never know what Ashwin is doing. He seems so easy and calm and then suddenly bowls those unplayable deliveries, and bats masterfully at times.” He called the spinner ‘Paheli’ for being a surprise package.

For opening batsman Rohit Sharma, the actor said “I like Rohit’s swag. I like the way he is always cool, calm, collected and completely goes mad at times. He owns the pitch, so he is like a ‘Baadshah’.”

Shah Rukh also praised Indian skipper Virat Kohli and called him ‘Don’. He said, “The grim determination on his face, mind ticking all the time, and the calmness with which he comes at the crease, knowing that he will win it all”.

Speaking about India’s most successful skipper MS Dhoni, Shah Rukh said he (Dhoni) doesn’t need to do sledging ever. His mind is ticking so fast, I am sure batsmen could hear that. He also added that Dhoni is that guy who can play the last bet, without anyone realising gets a bowler that you never expected to bowl the final over like in the world T20 (referring to the 2007 T20 World Cup final, where Dhoni asked Joginder Sharma to bowl the final over). He named MSD “Baazigar” for his decision-making skills on the field, that comes off well more often than not.

Following his final-over success in the ICC World T20 2007 final against Pakistan, Joginder Sharma became Indian cricket’s most unlikely hero.

Despite an over left for the experienced Harbhajan Singh, MS Dhoni decided to give the ball to Joginder ?who had impressed by bowling a two-wicket final over against Australia in the semi-final.

A wrong call by the skipper could have cost India the trophy. Joginder started with a wide delivery, then a dot. Misbah then hit a full toss for six. Six runs off four balls was a simple situation for Pakistan, but Joginder’s magic worked for Dhoni. On the very next ball, Misbah went for a scoop which landed safely in Sreesanth’s hands at short fine leg to crown India T20 champions.

In an interview with India Today, the Haryana medium-pacer r??evealed his experience of bowling the last over against Pakistan in the final of the World T20 2007.

He said that he was excited to be picked by the skipper to bowl the?? decisive over.

“I was expecting Dhoni to look at me before the start of the last over in the final. When Dhoni pointed at me, I ran to snatch the ball away from him. I was excited when he chose me ahead of Harbhajan Singh,” Sharma said.

“I also bowled the last over in the semi-finals of the World T20 2007 against Australia and I did well,” he added.

The first two balls of the over produced 7 runs. After conceding a wide of the first?? ??ball, Sharma bowled a full delivery to let Misbah smash it over long on for a huge six. The equation boiled down to 6 runs from 4 balls.

“After I conceded a wide in the first ball, Dhoni asked me not worry about anything,” Sharma said.

“We had a simple plan for the last over. Batsmen had not developed new shots at that time. We wanted to bowl outside the off,” he said.

Sharma said the small pause in his action helped him read Misbah’s intentions in the final over.

“I have a small pause in my bowling action and that helped me read Misbah’s intentions in the final over. I had watched him play the scoop shot well in the previous matches. I changed the length when I saw him moving across the stumps.”

“I was expecting Sreesanth to take the catch cleanly. I was happy I bowled the final over of a World Cup winning campaign, ” he said.

“I was fielding at square leg when Misbah-ul-Haq scooped the ball. I was following the trajectory of the ball and I wanted Santhakumaran Sreesanth to grab the ball. It wasn’t a tough catch but there was pressure.”

“I was the first one to run to Sreesanth and hug him,” Singh said.
