After 12 years, six days and 179 deliveries, Jaydev Unadkat finally got his maiden wicket in Test cricket. The left-armer had gone wicketless on his Test debut way back in December 2010 against South Africa in Centurion. After that, Unadkat is playing his second Test, which began today against Bangladesh in Mirpur.

Notably, it is the longest wait between two Test matches by an Indian in terms of years and Test matches missed and the second-longest in the world after England’s Gareth Batty. Unadkat missed 118 Te?sts between December 2010 and December 2022. But his wait paid off well as he bowled an absolute beauty to get rid of Bangladesh opener Zakir Hasan.

It all happened on the fifth ball of the 15th over when Unadkat, who replaced Kuldeep Yadav in the India XI for the second Test, delivered a short-of-length ball that had some extra bounce. Zakir was cramped for room, and the ball lobbed up towards the fourth slip off his glove before Indian skipper KL Rahul took a simple catch.

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat first. While the Bangladesh skipper was certain about the conditions, Indian skipper Rahul said he wasn’t sure about how the surface would perform.

“We’d have done the same. To be honest, on seeing the surface, not sure what to make of it. There is some grass that you can see, but it’s generally good to bat here. There is generally some bounce here and some help for both pacers and spinners. We’d have wanted to bat first, but we aren’t sure what to expect,” said Rahul.

Left-arm fast bowler Jaydev Unadkat has been added to the Indian Test squad for the two-match series against Bangladesh. Unadkat, who powered Saurashtra to the Vijay Hazare Trophy triumph recently, has been called up as a replacement for Mohammed Shami – ruled out of the series due to a bowling arm stress.

Unadkat’s only appearance so far in the longest format was almost exactly 12 years ago, as a teenager straight out of India Under 19 side, in the first Test of the 2010-11 tour of South Africa. In that Test, in Centurion, he finished with figures of none for 101 as India lost by an innings and 25 runs.

Meanwhile, there are chances of regular skipper Rohit Sharma joining the squad ahead of second Test (December 22-26). He suffered a ‘blow on his left thumb’ during the second ODI in Dhaka on December 7. In the first Test (December 14-18), KL Rahul will be leading the side.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) panned eyes when they excluded Saurashtra pacer Jaydev Unadkat from the wings and included two pacers �?Avesh Khan and Prasidh Krishna as standby players in the recently announced squad for World Test Championship (WTC) Final and the England tour.

The only left-arm pacer in the side is Gujarat’s uncapped player Arzan Nagwaswalla.

Former Indian cricketer Dodda Ganesh was stunned by the selectors’ move and took to Twitter to express his dismay.

However, netizens formed a different opinion and started trolling Ganesh by pointing out that Unadkat hasn’t performed up to the mark in the previous IPL seasons.

The 47-year-old was quick to respond that the 29-year-old has been performing well in the last five domestic seasons, and the selection isn’t done only on the basis of the cash-rich league.

Unad??kat was happy to se?e Ganesh acknowledging his hard work and remarked that the former was hopeful for the next season.

Ranji Trophy-winning team captain, Jaydev Unadkal has revealed the reason for England star cricketer Ben Stokes calling him ‘Mango Man’.

In the IPL, both Unadkat and Stokes shared the same dressing room du?ring their stay at Rising Pune Supergiants and now Rajasthan Royals.

Amid Coronavirus lockdown, ?the Rajasthan Royals camp has b?een active on social media in conducting podcasts with Jos Buttler, Ish Sodhi and now Unadkat.

The lanky left-armer was instrumental in Saurashtra’s maiden Ranji Trophy win in the season of 2019-20.

“When I brought mangoes for him he was the happiest and called me Mango Man of the group,” Unadkat commented on Instagram Live via Twitter handle of Rajasthan Royals.

“I have memories of him smashing his bats and helmets, he is dangerous after getting out. But he is a great guy, he is a champion,” said Unadkat, who was retained by the Royals at an amount of INR 3 crores in the 2020 auction.

In Ranji Trophy, the 28-year-old toppled all domestic records by clinching 67 wickets in a single season by a pacer, surpassing Dooda Ganesh’s 62 wickets in 1998-99 season.

“That was special, one of the best moments in my career and the biggest trophy that I have won,” said the Porbandar-born, who produced match-winning spell even in the finals of the tournament.

“Ranji is always tough. So many matches…so we need to be fit throughout the season. Winning the semifinal and final under pressure was an amazing feeling. Holding the trophy was also an amazing feeling. I can’t forget that moment. I hope we can lift the IPL trophy as well,” Unadkat continued.

However, Unadkat has not been able to translate his domestic success at the international lev?el consistently. He has featured in a solitary Test match in Sout?h Africa in 2010, along with seven ODIs and ten T20Is thus far.

In the 89 first-class games, Unadkat picked up ??327 scalps, at an impressive average of 23.21.? Also, in the recently concluded season, he clinched three consecutive six-wicket hauls in the games against Baroda and Tamil Nadu.

He has 65 wickets in the tournament so far, and thus Unadkat broke a 21-year-old r?ecord for most wickets by a fast bowler in a single Ranji Trophy season.

When it comes to the overall record, Unadkat also surpassed Bishan Sing?h Bedi (64 wickets) and is currently just three wickets away from claiming the top spot which is held by Bihar spinner Ashutosh Amanm who had taken 68 wickets in the 2018-19 edition of the elite competition.

It was Unadkat’s seventh 5-wicket haul in Ranji Trophy. The 28-year-old is only the third pacer after Laxmipathy Balaji and Aniket Choudhary to take seven 5-wicket hauls in a Ranji Trophy season.

Unadkat’s brilliant spell helped his team to beat Gujarat and qualify for the finals where they will meet Bengal. This is the second successive final for Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy. Last year they faced Vidarbha in the finals but lost the game by 78 runs.

The first match of the 2019 Deodhar Trophy took place at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi between India A and India B. Parthiv Patel led India B cruised past Hanuma Vihari’s India A by 108 runs.

After asked to bat first, India B posted a mammoth total of 302/6 in 50 overs, thanks to centuries from Ruturaj Gaikwad (113) and Baba Aparajith? (101).

In reply, India A never looked in the chase, and when things were looking dull, a schoolbo??y error involving Jaydev Unadkat took place, which left everyone in splits.

The incident happened in the 43rd over of the second innings when the result of the match was inconsequential. India A was struggling at 176/7 with Unadkat on strike to face the fifth ball of Shahbaz Nadeem’s over. The 28-year-old tailender came down the track to play the delivery and pushed the ball to the cover fielder.
