The third match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is underway at the National Stadium in Karachi, featuring Afghanistan and South Africa. This contest marks the opening game for both teams in Group B, and they will be looking to start their campaigns on ?a high note.

With both sides possessing a mix of experienced campaigners and young talents, an exciting contest is expected. Afghanistan, known for their spin attack, will rely on Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad to trouble the Proteas batters. Meanwhile, South Africa will look ?to capitalize on their batting depth and pa?ce attack to dominate the game.

South Africa wins toss and opts to bat first

Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma won the toss and elected to bat first against Afghanistan. South Africa will aim to put up a competitive total on the board, while Afghanistan’s bowlers will be eager to make early inroads. With the Karachi pitch generally favoring batters, Bavuma’s decision suggests confidence in his team’s batting lineup. The likes of Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram will be crucial in sta??bili??zing the innings, while the aggressive stroke play of David Miller could provide the finishing touches.

Reason behind Heinrich Klaasen’s absence

One of the key talking points ahead of the match was Heinrich Klaasen‘s exclusion from South Africa’s playing XI. Although Bavuma did not disclose the exact reason for Klaasen’s absence, reports confirmed that Klaasen is not playing today’s game due to a left elbow soft tissue injury.

The Proteas management has taken this step to ensure his recovery and avoid aggravating the injury. Klaasen, known for his explosive batting in the middle order, has been a vital cog in the South African setup. His absence might be felt in the later stages of the innings, particularly in countering Afghanistan’s poten?t spin attack. However, South Africa has depth in their squad, and?? the likes of Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen will have to step up in his absence.

In Match 18 of the SA20 2025 clash between Durban Super Giants and Paarl Royals, Heinrich Klaasen showcased his wicketkeeping brilliance to dismiss Joe Root for a golden duck.

Heinrich Klaasen’s brilliant reflex catch sends Joe Root packing

On fifth ball of the first over, Chris Woakes bowled a back-of-a-length delivery outside off that shaped away late, tempting Root into an uncertain poke. The English batter, unable to resist the movement, edged it sharply, but Klaasen’s lightning-fast reflexes ensured the breakthrough. Positioned slightly to his right, Klaasen took an exceptional catch in front of his face, demonstrating outstanding hand-eye coordination and athleticism. The dismissal was crucial for the Super Giants, as Root’s early departure derailed the Royals?plans for a steady start in the chase. Woakes?precision, combined with Klaasen’s sharp glovework, created the perfect opening. Klaasen’s effort not only lifted his team’s spirits but also set the tone for the Super Giants?bowling dominance.

The innings started strongly, with Quinton de Kock (43 off 30 balls) and Matthew Breetzke (25 off 29 balls) forming a 50-run partnership in the Powerplay. betvisa cricketHeinrich Klaasen – Cricket Times - betvisa live //betvisa68.com/2024/12/south-africas-heinrich-klassen-fined-for-kicking-the-stumps-during-2nd-odi-against-pakistan/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 10:46:50 +0000 //betvisa68.com/?p=168719

Cricket is a gentleman’s game, but having a brawl with rivals is a part and parcel of the sport. Players do it all the time to each other either to let their frustration out or get inside a rival’s head and force a mistake from their end. Something of a similar sort happened as star South African Heinrich Klassen got involved in a tussle with some of the Pakistani players t?hat didn’t end well for him.

ICC fined Heinrich Klassen for kicking the stumps

It started during the 26th over of the South African innings as they were chasing down a total of 329 runs from Pakistan. Haris Rauf bowled the final ball of the over after which he said something to Klassen which ignited the South African wicket-keeper who retaliated with some words of his own. Pakistani skipper Mohammed Rizwan got involved in the scene to defend his  bowler and there was some finger-pointing between him and Klassen. The mood on the pitch returned back to some normalcy as umpires and some senior Pakistani players like Babar Azam mediated but it seemed that the flashpoint had got into Klassen??s head ever since.

The South African chase came to an end as Klassen was the last man dismissed by Naseem Shah. Klassen made a valiant effort to save the match for his team and keep the Proteas’ hope alive in the series, but he didn’t get any support from other South African batters. Furious with the loss, Klassen hit the stumps to let his frustration out. Later on, ICC announced that Klassen has been found guilty of breaching the ICC code of conduct and levied 15 percent of his match fee for the same.

The offence of Klaasen

ICC further explained that Klassen breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equi??pment or fixtures and fittings during an international match.?/em> Additionally, one demerit point has also been added to Klassen’s disciplinary record since it was his first offence in a 24-month period.

Klassen has reportedly accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Richie Richardson. On-field umpires Alex Wharf and Lubabalo Gcuma, third umpire Nitin Menon, and fourth umpire Allahuddien Palekar levelled the charges agains?t him for the offence.

South Africa will play the third and final ODI of the series against Pakistan in the Wanderers s??tadium. The visiting side has already secured an unbeaten 2-0 lead in the series. However, Proteas will quest to avoid a series white-wash against a Pakistani side who has managed to defeat them convincingly in the first two ODIs.

Shaheen Afridi produced a moment of brilliance to dismiss Heinrich Klaasen during the first ODI between South Africa and Pakistan at Boland Park, Paarl, on Tuesday (December 17). The sensational delivery, which uprooted the middle stump, left Klaasen stunne?d and gave Shaheen a moment to cherish. Klaasen had been batting fluently, scoring a crucial 86 off 97 balls, but even he had no answer to Shaheen’s epic riposte, as the packed crowd watched in awe.

The dismissal of Heinrich Klaasen: Dream delivery by Shaheen Afridi

On the fourth delivery of the 45th over, Shaheen delivered an absolute peach that rattled the stumps and sent Klaasen back to the pavilion. It was a fuller-length delivery, pitched just on the off-stump, but the late inward movement completely deceived Klaasen. Expecting a straighter line, Klaasen played down the wrong line, leaving a massive gap between bat and pad. The ball sneaked through, crashed into the middle stump, and created the iconic sight that fast bowlers dream of. Shaheen’s celebration reflected his delight, knowing he had removed South Africa’s in-form batter at a critical juncture. For Klaasen, who had struck seven fours and two sixes, one of which came just before the dismissal, it was a disappointing yet unplayable delivery that ended his spirited knock.

Here’s the video:

Salman Agha destroys South Africa’s top order

South Africa, after winning the toss and electing to bat first, started their innings positively. Openers Tony de Zorzi and Ryan Rickelton looked fluent, taking full advantage of the initial powerplay. De Zorzi raced to a quick 33 off 25 balls before being trapped LBW by Agha Salman. Rickelton, too, perished shortly after for 36 off 38 balls, as South Africa lost two wickets in quick succession. From there, Pakistan tightened their grip with disciplined bowling, with Agha Salman striking again to dismiss Rassie van der Dussen?? cheaply.

Captain Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen then steadied the innings, stitching a valuable partnership. Markram played a measured innings of 35 runs, providing Klaasen the platform to accelerate. Klaasen capitalized on the opportunity, showing aggression and composure while handling the? s?pinners. However, wickets kept tumbling at the other end as Agha Salman’s golden arm continued to trouble South Africa, eventually finishing with impressive figures of 4/32.

Pakistan’s discipline bowling in Paarl ODI

Klaasen stood tall for South Africa, carrying the responsibility after the top-order collapse. His aggressive stroke play, which included two powerful sixes, ensured South Africa maintained a steady run rate. Klaasen r?eached his half-century in 68 balls and continued to anchor the innings despite losing partners. However, Shaheen’s stunning delivery in the 45th over turned the tide. The middle-stump uprooting dismissal left South Africa reeling at 2??18/8, diminishing their chances of posting a competitive total.

With tailenders Ottneil Baartman and Tabraiz Shamsi trying to push the total past 250, Pakistan’s bowlers have maintained a disciplined line and length. The spinners, especially Abrar Ahmed, have been economical, while Shaheen’s wicket brought renewed momentum for the visitors. South Africa eventually managed to post 239/9 in 50 overs, ?but the target seems below pa??r on a batting-friendly surface.

Heinrich Klaasen has been appointed as the captain of South Africa‘s T20I squad for the upcoming series against Pakistan, which is set to kick off on December 10, 2024. This decision comes as regular captain Aiden Markram is currently engaged in a Test series against Sri Lanka, along with several other key players. Despite the absence of these seasoned cricketers, Klaasen’s leadership presents an exciting opportunity for South Africa to showcase their depth and resilience in the shorter format.

A new chapter for Heinrich Klaasen

Klaasen steps into the captaincy role at a pivotal moment for South African cricket. Known for his aggressive batting and sharp wicketkeeping skills, Klaasen has been a vital player in the T20 format. His experience, although limited in terms of captaincy at the international level, is backed by a solid domestic record and performances in various T20 leagues worldwide. Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball head coach, expressed confidence in Klaasen’s ability to lead, highlighting his strong understanding and reading of the game as crucial assets for the team during this transitional phase.

“In the abs?ence of Aiden, Heinri?ch will lead the team. He is a vastly experienced player with a strong understanding and reading of the game. We look forward to utilising him in this role after his previous experiences in 2021,?/em> Walter stated in the media release from ICC.

A blend of experience and youth in the South African squad

The South African squad for the T20I series features a mix of experienced players and emerging talents. With Markram, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, and Tristan Stubbs unavailable due to their commitments in the Test series, Klaasen will be supported by a squad that includes notable returns. Fast bowler Anrich Nortje and wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi are back in action after missing significant? time since the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

All-rounder George Linde also makes a comeback to the T20I setup after a three-year hiatus. Linde has been in exceptional form during the CSA T20 Challenge, where he scored 171 r??uns at an impressive strike?? rate of 178.12 and took nine wickets at an average of 18.33. His inclusion adds valuable balance to the squad, particularly with his spinning abilities.

“We have also given George an opportunity again. He really earned his spot off the back of a strong domestic campaign, and his skills as a spinning all-rounder add important balance to the team. We’re pleased to have Anrich and Tabraiz back in the squad. Their wealth of experience and skill significantly bolsters our bowling unit, enhancing both our pace and spin departments, which will be key against a strong Pakistan side,?/em> Walter added.

The challenge of facing Pakistan

The three-match T20I series against Pakistan will take place across three venues: Kingsmead in Durban on December 10, followed by matches in Centurion and Johannesburg on December 13 and 14 respectively. This series represents not only a chance for South Africa to assert themselves following a disappointing series defeat to India but also serves as preparation for future c??ompetitions.

Walter emphasized that all players selected have prior international caps, which is vital as they face a strong Pakistan side known for its unpredictability and skill in T20 cricket. The head coach noted that the experience brought by players like Nortje and Shamsi will be crucial in bolstering both pace and spin departments against Pakistan’s formidable batting lineup.

South Africa’s T20I squad against Pakistan

Heinrich Klaasen is renowned for his explosive batting and remarkable consistency in all formats of the game. Known for his ability to take on any bowler right from the start, the South African star possesses a solid technique that allows him to dominate both fast bowlers and spinners with ease. His aggressive style of play, coupled with his ability to accelerate in any situation, makes him a dangerous player in the T20 format,?? capable of turning the game around in a matter of overs.

Off the field, Klaasen contrasts his on-field aggression with a calm and composed personality. This side of him was on full display during a recent fun Q&A session, where he discussed various aspects of his career, his influences, and personal life. In the chat with Jio Cinema, Klaasen answered some i??ntriguing questions, giving fans a glimpse into his mindset.

Heinrich Klaasen picks the toughest bowler in T20s

One of the key moments during the conversation was when Klaasen was asked about the toughest bowler to face in T20 cricket. Without hesitation, Klaasen named India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah as the bowler he finds mos?t challenging to hit. Bumrah’s precision and ability to bowl under pressure make him a difficult opponent for any batter, and Klaasen acknowledged this with his choice.

Q: Who is the toughest bowler to hit out in T20s?
Klaasen: Jasprit Bumrah

Klaasen names a batter who can smash double century in the shortest format

While Klaasen is undoubtedly known for his own ability to score big in the T20 format, he didn’t choose himself when asked to name a batter who could potentially slam a double century in the shortest format of the game. Instead, Klaasen picked West Indies star Nicholas Pooran, praising ?his explosive batting capabilities and the she??er power he brings to the game.

Notably, Pooran, with his aggressive stroke play and abilit??y to hit boundaries at will, has often been a game-changer in T20 cricket. Klaasen’s choice reflects Pooran’s knack for playing fearless cricket and his potential to turn a game on its head, particularly in conditions where the ball comes onto the bat well. Pooran’s ability to play innovative shots and accumulate runs quickly makes him a strong contender to achieve something as remarkable as a double century in T20 cricket, an achievement that remains rare but certainly within Pooran’s reach.

Q: One batter who can score a double hundred in T20 cricket?

Hamilton’s consistency, record-breaking career, and influence both on and off the track make him a source of inspiration for many sports personalities.

Q: One athlete from another sport you look up to?
Klaasen: Lewis Hamilton

The next question focused on a batter Klaasen would pick to bat for his life—a scenario where the stakes couldn’t be higher. Without hesitation, Klaasen named South African cricket legend Hashim Amla, who was known for his calm demeanor,?? incredible te?chnique, and ability to play long innings.

Q: If you had to pick one batter to bat for your life, who would it be?
Klaasen: Probably, Hashim Amla

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s retention plan ahead of IPL 2025 auction

Pat Cummins to continue as SRH captain in 2025
