Pakistan pacer Hasan Ali recently expressed his thoughts on India‘s uncertainty about their participation in the Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan in February-March next year. The uncertainty stems from the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) hesitation to send the team to Pakistan without the Indian government’s approval.

BCCI’s uncertainty and Hasan Ali’s strong reaction

The BCCI has reportedly proposed a Hybrid Model to the International Cricket Council (ICC), suggesting that India’s matches be hosted either in Sri Lanka or Dubai. This suggestion follows last year’s Asia Cup format, where Pakistan hosted the tournament, but India played all their matches in Sri Lanka due to political tensions. Speaking on Samaa TV, Hasan emphasized that the Champions Trophy should be played in Pakistan, regardless of India’s participation. He asserted that cricket would not end if India chose not to participate.

“As our (PCB) chairman has already said, if the Champions Trophy is going to be held in Pakistan, then it will be in Pakistan. If India doesn’t want to come, we’ll play without them. Cricket should be played in Pakistan, and if India doesn’t want to participate, it doesn’t mean cricket has ended. There are many other teams besides India,” Hasan said.

Historical context and political tensions

India have not played a bilateral series in Pakistan since the Asia Cup 2008 due to strained political relations. The last series between the two teams was hosted in India from December 2012 to January 2013. Since then, their encounters have been limited to ICC tournaments and Asia Cups. Despite these challenges, Pakistan won the ICC ?Champions Trophy in 2017, while India claimed the title in 2013 and shared the trophy with Sri Lanka in 2002.

The latest face-off between the two arch-rivals was during the group stage of the T20 World Cup 2024, where India secured a narrow?? seven-run victory over Pakistan at the Nassau County International Stadium in New York. The political tension between the two countries continues to affect their cricketing ties, making the situation for the Champions Trophy complex.

As the Pakistan cricket team has geared up for a demanding tour of Australia commencing on December 14, Hasan Ali, the seasoned cricketer, has shed light on the impending challenges and unveiled a new tactical approach to counter the threat posed by Usman Khawaja.

Pakistan’s challenging tour to Australia

Under the fresh leadership of Shan Masood, Pakistan are confronted with the formidable task of securing victory on Australian soil, aiming to etch their name in cricketing history by becoming the first Pakistan side to win a Test series in Australia. Despite the historic opportunity, the visitors anticipate challenges in facing the Australian batting lineup, particularly the in-form Khawaja, who showcased remarkable touch th??roughout the year.

Hasan Ali unveils tactical approach against Usman Khawaja

During Pakistan’s previous tour to Australia in 2019, Khawaja demonstrated his prowess by amassing 229 runs in two games, boasting an excellent average of 76. Now Hasan has candidly shared insights into a strategic shift for the national cricket team, emphasizing caution in discussing on-field plans in Urdu due to Khawaja’s understanding of the language. In a recent interview, Hasan has revealed concerns about the Islamabad-born cricketer allegedly sharing game strategies of the Men in Green with the Australian team during a match in Karachi.

“Usman bhai is familiar with Urdu, but after he leaked our strategies to the Australia cricket team in Karachi, we’ve become more cautious. We’ll ensure not to discuss plans in Urdu in front of him to keep our strategies confidential. We’ll move a bit farther away from him to strategize for the game,” Hasan was quoted as saying by The Nation.

Adapting to Australian conditions

As the team has prepared for the challenges ahead, Hasan also highlighted the toughness of Australian conditions, specifically the bouncy tracks that offer extra bounce. Adapting to these conditions has become paramount for the Pakistan squad, and Hasan’s revelations provided a glimpse into the team’s strategy and preparedness to navigate the intricacies of Australian pitches.

“It’s not just Pakistan; all South Asian teams find it challenging to take 20 wickets on Australian tours. The pitches in Australia differ from those in other cricketing nations, and the local players’ familiarity with their conditions often poses problems for visiting squads,” the 29-year-old concluded.

As the cricketing world eagerly anticipates the transition from the ODI World Cup 2023 to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, the enthusiasm among players is palpable. While debates about the supremacy of various T20 leagues persist, Pakistan’s fast bowler Hasan Ali recently voiced?? his aspirations to participate in the IPL.

Hasan’s desire comes despite the longstanding absence of Pakistani players from the IPL since 2009 due to political tensions between India and Pakistan. The fiery pacer expressed his hopes of playing in the IPL by emphasizing its status as one of the biggest leagues in the world.

The historical context

The history of cricketing relations between India and Pakistan has been marred by political complexities, with the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks leading to a suspension of Pakistani players’ participation in the IPL from 2009 onwards. Subsequent decisions by both cricket boards limited bilateral contests, with matches occurring only during ICC tournaments. However, Hasan showed optimism about transcending these historical barriers if he gets the opportunity in future.

In the final over of the first innings, a comical mishap took place as Hasan Ali, fielding at long-on, quickly ran to grab the ball, but as soon as he came near the white leather, he didn’t make any effort to complete the catch.

Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan, who was on air then, opined that Ali could have easily taken the catch as he had made his ground. The Hamilton-born took his team total to 400-run mark, and himself remained unbeaten on 27 after facing 17 deliveries.

In a promising start to their ODI World Cup 2023 journey, Pakistan secured a convincing victory in their opening match against the Netherlands on Friday. While the Dutch side displayed exception??al performance, they managed to keep Pakistan? in check and prevented them from completely dominating the proceedings.

Opting to bat first, Pakistan encountered a rocky start, losing their top three batsmen for a mere 38 runs. However, the partnership of Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel e??mer?ged as a savior for Pakistan. Together, they added an impressive 120 runs for the fourth wicket, with both Rizwan (68) and Shakeel (68) achieving well-deserved half-centuries.

Contributions from the middle order proved crucial as Mohammad Nawaz (39) and Shadab Khan (32) delivered v?aluab??le knocks, helping Pakistan reach a total of 286 runs in 49 overs.

Netherlands struggle in reply

In response, the Netherlands found it challenging to withstand the pressure imposed by Pakistan’s bowlers and were bundled out for 205 runs in 41 overs, resulting in an 81-run loss. While opener Vikramjit Singh (52) and all-rounder Bas de Leede (67) put up impressi?ve performances, their efforts f??ell short of steering the Dutch side to victory.

Pakistan’s victory was underlined by the exceptional bowling performances of Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali. Hasan Ali, in particular, made a significant impac?t as he marked his return to ODI cricket after a 16-month hiatus. The right-arm fast bowler delivered an impressive s??pell, recording figures of 7-1-33-2.

Dale Steyn praises Hasan Ali’s performance

Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn commended Hasan’s performance, noting that despite not bowling at express pace, Hasan’s precision with line and length was impeccable. Steyn also highlighted the Pakistan pacer’s enjoyment on the field, emphasizing the positive impact it had on his performance.

“He (Hasan Ali) hasn’t taken the new ball for a while now. It disrupts things when you lose your usual fast bowling unit that opens the bowling. But he came in and did a wonderful job. He didn’t really try and get the pace up to that 140-145 KMPH. He was very effective on his line and length,” Stey??n remarked in a video shared by ESPNcricinfo.

“The other thing that I enjoyed about him was that he had a good smile on his face. It looked like he was enjoying himself. When you are enjoying yourself, things come a little bit easier,” added Steyn.
