Harshal Patel might not have made it to India’s squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, but his performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 have certainly caught the eye. In a season where batters have often dominated, Harshal’s skillful bowling has placed him among the highest wicket-takers of the tournament.

Impressive wicket-taking ability

Harshal currently leads the wicket-taking charts with 22 scalps in 13 IPL outings, surpassing even the highly acclaimed Jasprit Bumrah, who has 20 wickets in 13 matches. Notably, Harshal has excelled in the death overs, claiming 16 wickets compared to Bumrah’s 11. In a chat with the IPL, Harshal elaborated on why the wicket was special to him.  Harshal mentioned that taking Shahrukh’s wicket was particularly special because, in his opinion, it was a very challenging delivery to face. He noted that this would likely be one of his favorite wickets. Additionally, he emphasized that dismissing Mahi bhai was always significant, especially in a scenario where the match could have swung either way.

“The Shahrukh wicket was really special because if I say so myself, that was a really difficult delivery to play. That would probably be one of my favourites, and obviously getting Mahi bhai out is always special, especially in that situation where the game could have gone either way. Instead of 167, they could have gotten to 180,” Harshal was quoted as saying by India Tv.

Mastering the art of deception

Harshal further explained the effectiveness of his deliveries. “I have said this multiple times, when I execute that delivery and when it comes out of my hand really well, most of the batters don’t see it, especially when you have just come in and you have not played any balls. It’s very easy to wait for it and allow it to dip and then get under the ball and hit it for a six or a four,”

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) fast bowler Harshal Patel was in seventh heaven after his team trumped the Lucknow Supe??r Giants (LSG) in the Eliminator and booked the place in the Qualifier ??2 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

RCB’s uncapped batter Rajat Patidar was the s??tar of the night as he smashed a match-winning knock of unbeaten 112 runs from 54 deliveries, with the help of 12 fours and seven humungous sixes. His efforts guided RCB to post a massive total of 207/4.

In response, Lucknow did manage to reach quite close but fell short of 14 runs as they managed to score 193/6 in 20 overs. Even in such a high-scoring contest, Harshal impressed one and all with his economical bowling display. The right-armer only conceded 25 runs in his quota of 4 overs and picked up the crucial wicket of Marcus Stoinis.

Notably, Harshal did find himself in a spot of bother when he came to bowl the 18th over in a crunch situation when LSG needed 34 runs only. The 31-year-old had a terrible start as he gave away six wides (including five wides off one ball). At that time, Harshal still hadn’t bowled his first legitimate delivery of the over, but he didn’t succumb to the pressure and came back sharply, allowing LSG to only claim two more runs from the over, including the scalp of Stoinis.

After the thrilling game, Harshal opened up about that nerve-wracking over and said that even if bowling at death is challenging, he would love to face such a sit??uation, irrespective of whether he would deliver for his side or not.

“First of all, yes, I was nervous, there is no doubt about that. If you are defending 34 (41) off 18 balls, then you’re going to be nervous around it, but I knew when I gave away six runs without bowling a ball, gave away those wides, I knew that the wide yorker won’t work. So I thought, what worked for me in the first two overs, I want to go back to that and give myself the best opportunity to get KL (Rahul) and Stoinis out. Fortunately, I got Stoinis out at the boundary,” said Harshal during the post-match presser.

“Whether I would be able to deliver or not, I don’t really know, I can’t say. But I want to be in those situations, there is no doubt about that, and I have been wanting to do that for the past 2-3 years, I have been doing that for Haryana, and I wanted to do it at the bigger stage, and I will continue to put myself in those situations, sometimes it is going to come off, sometimes it is not going to come off. There will be games where I will end up losing for the team, and I am okay with that as long as I don’t shy away from challenges,” Harshal explained.

According to reports, Harshal exited the bubble after getting to know about the catastrophe in the family right after the game against MI at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on ??Saturday.

“Unfortunately, Harshal had to leave the bio-bubble due to a death in his family. It was his sister. He did not take the team bus back to Mumbai from Pune,” PTI reported quoting an IPL source.

“He will be rejoining the bubble before the next game against CSK on April 12,” the source added.

Notably, the Gujarat cricketer has been a consistent performer for the Challengers in the last couple of seasons. He was the hi??ghest wicket-taker in the previous edition of the cash-rich league. During the game against five-time champions MI, Harshal picked up a couple of wickets while conceded only 23 runs as RCB restricted MI to 151/6.

The Challengers then chased down the target in 18.3 overs to register their third victory and hand Mumbai their fourth consecutive loss in the fifteenth season of the lucrative league. Opener Anuj Rawat starred with the bat and he was well supported by former skipper Virat Kohli.

RCB’s crisis man AB de Villiers once again stepped up to the occasion and took his side over the line in a nail-biting contest. Chasing 160, the Challengers were struggling at 106/5, but De Villiers held his nerve and took the game to the last over.
