Star Indian cricketer Hanuma Vihari has stirred up a storm in the cricketing world a??fter announcing his departure from Andhra Cricket following a contentious episode involving his removal from captaincy. The 30-year-old batter took to social media to express his frustrations, attributing politics and inflated egos within the cricketing fraternity as the catalysts for his decision.

Political interference to remove Hanuma Vihari from captaincy

The controversy ignited during a match between Andhra and Bengal when Vihari reportedly admonished the 17th player, KN Prudhviraj. Allegedly, Prudhviraj’s father, a politician, intervened, resulting in Vihari’s abrupt removal from the captaincy. In an emotional Instagram post, Vihari disclosed the injustice he faced, despite his stellar contributions to the team, which included leading them to the knockouts five times in seven years and representing India in 16 Test matches.

In response to Vihari’s revelations, Prudhviraj refuted the allegations on Instagram, emphasizing the significance of self-respect. Vihari’s teammates rallied behind him, writing to the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) president, affirming their support for Vihari as captain.

Pawan Kalyan bats for Hanuma Vihari

The saga caught the attention of actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan, who expressed his dismay on social media. Kalyan criticized the Andhra cricket board’s decision, suggesting that political influence overshadowed Vihari’s contribution to the team. He lamented the treatment meted out to Vihari, highlighting the contradiction in the association’s priorities.

Kalyan’s post resonated with cricket enthusiasts, drawing attention to the plight of players embroiled in bureaucratic controversies. He extended his support to Vihari, commending his dedication to the sport and urging the state association to rectify its approach towards players.

“Represented our ‘Bharath’ in 16 Test Matches, Scored 5 half Centuries & a Century, His Heroics in Sydney Test against Australia is unforgettable.

As Andhra Pradesh Ranji Team captain, helped Andhra Team to qualify for the knockouts 5 times in the last 7 years. From Playing with a fractured hand to an Injured Hamstring, @Hanumavihari always gave his everything for Bharath and for Andhra Pradesh in the domestic circuit.

And today, Andhra Cricket Association forced Vihari to resign from the captaincy just because a YCP Corporator wanted it. A Local YCP Politician with no cricket background is more valuable than an Indian Cricketer & Andhra Pradesh Ranji Team Captain to our Andhra Cricket Association. What a Shame!” tweeted Kalyan.

He added: “Mr.Jagan Mohan Reddy, What is the point of spending crores of money in events like ‘Adudaam Andhra?when the State Cricket Association humiliates and insults our Andhra Cricket Team Captain?

Dear @Hanumavihari garu, firstly you have been a Champion Player for the State and for the Nation. We thank you for your services and for inspiring young kids and players in Andhra. All Telugu Cricket Loving People feel pained and hurt with the treatment meted out to you by our State Association and We Stand with you.

Last but not the least, Wishing you the very best and I hope you will play for Andhra Again next year with a State Board that knows to respect and treat players with dignity.”

In a shocking turn of events, Indian cricketer Hanuma Vihari, famed for his heroic performance in the Sydney Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2021, has announced his decision to quit the Andhra Pradesh cricket team. Vihari, in a detailed Instagram post, accused a fellow teammate of playing politics against him and infl?uencing the state association to remove him from the captaincy. This revelation has sparked a controversy that h?as divided opinions within the cricketing community.

The public announcement and allegations from Vihari

Vihari’s decision to step down from the captaincy came after Andhra Pradesh’s heartbreaking 4-run loss to Madhya Pradesh in the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 season. In his statement, Vihari revealed that the conflict began when he had a heated argument with the 17th player of the team during the first game against Bengal and the latter complained to his politician father, who, in turn, pressured the Andhra Pradesh Cricket Association to take action again??st Vihari.

Vihari further expressed his embarrassment at being asked to resign from the captaincy without any fault of his own. He highlighted his contributions to the team, including batting left-handed while suffering from injury and leading Andhra to the knockouts five times in the last seven years. The Andhra-bor??n batter then explained that despite feeling humiliated after all this drama, he still continued to play for the side out of respect for the game and his team.

“I was the captain in the first game against Bengal, during that game I shouted on 17th player and he complained to his dad(who is a politician), his dad in return asked the Association to take action against me,?/em> wrote Vihari in the long note.

“I felt embarrassed, but the only reason I continued playing this season because I respect the game and my team. Sad part is association thinks that players have to listen to whatever they say and players are there because of them. I felt humiliated and embarrassed but I’ve not expressed it out until today. I’ve decided that I’ll never play for Andhra where i lost my self-respect. I love the team. I love the way we’re growing every season but association doesn’t want us to grow,?/em> he added.

The controversy escalates as the player accused by Vihari reacts

The accused player, responding to Vihari’s allegations, claimed that he was abused by Vihari and emphasized that no one is bigger than the game. He alleged the use of foul language by Vihari in the dressing room, creating a public spectacle around the issue.

Team’s unified support to Vihari

The narrative took a surprising turn when the entire Andhra team came together to issue a letter urging the association president to allow Vihari to continue as the team’s captain. They defended Vihari, stating that the alleged inappropriate language is a norm in the dressing room and should not be taken out of context. Vihari shared the letter on his social media, captioning it with ‘The whole team knows!’

Indian Test batter Hanuma Vihari showcased an unreal level of courage and determination during a Ranji Trophy game between Andra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday.

On Day 1 of the ongoing 4th Quarter Final at Holkar Stadium in Indore, Vihari, who was captaining the Andhra team, sustained a broken wrist after being hit by a delivery from Avesh Khan and was forced to retire hurt. However, after his team suffered a mid-??inning collapse on Day 2, the 29-year-old took the courageous decision to go out and resume his inning.

Vihari, who has played in 16 Test matches for India so far, came out at No. 11, and added 26 runs for the last wicket with No. 9 batter Lalith Mohan (22 no?t out). Further, Vihari ?who is a right-handed batter ?batted left-handed to ensure his wrist remains protected. He was the last Andhra batter to get dismissed. Vihari’s exemplary bravery was widely lauded by fans and admirers on various social media platforms. Senior cricketer Dinesh Karthik also expressed his views and heaped praises on Vihari for his unbe??lievabl??e effort.

Notably, Vihari had been an integral part of the Indian team until last year when he lost his place in the squad following the emergence of Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel in the side. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Team India’s squad for the upcoming home Test series against New Zealand on Friday.

Regular captain Virat Kohli was rested for the two-match series opener, and in his absence, Ajinkya Rahane? was chosen to lead the side. Though, Kohli will join the Indian outfit as skipper in the second? and last Test.

A few notable exclusions from the Test squad included T20I skipper Rohit Sharma, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, frontline pacer Jasprit Bumrah and middle-order batsman Hanuma Vihari. Players like Rohit, Pant and Bumrah will be seen in the T20I series, starting November 17. But Vihari, who only plays Test cricket, was found missing ??from the red-ball squad, which surprised many.

Vihari has been a regular member of the Indian Test team for the last few years and has done reasonably well. He also saved India from a defeat in his last appearance against Australia in Sydney earlier this year. Hence, his omission raised several eyebrows, and fans slammed the Indian board fo??r ignoring Vihari.

Here is how Netizens reacted:

Indian middle-order batsman Hanuma Vihari battled pain and injuries, to pr??oduce a memorable draw against Australia in the Sydney Test. Vih??ari played a severe hamstring injury and faced 161 balls for his unbeaten 23.

Now the Andhra Pradesh cricketer has revealed that he got an appreciation message from none other than the legendary Rahul Dravid after the completion of the third Test.

While speaking to Sports Today,? VIhari revealed the special message he receiv??ed from Dravid.

“Even after the Sydney Test, it was nice of him to send me a text. He said ‘Very well done; you did a great job’. That is the person he is, and I respect him for that,” said Vihari.

The 27-year-old improved his skills in India-A side under the guidance of Dravid. He explained how the former India skipper developed players like him, Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal and others by g??iving crucial tips and raisin??g their confidence level.

“I mean, after getting picked in the India A side. Those who were there in the side, Siraj, Saini, Shubman, Mayank, everyone who were part of that side played a lot of cricket together in India A. Also, in the last 3-4 years, we played many India A tours, and he (Rahul Dravid) was the coach.”

“I don’t think we played so many India A tours before. So that bridged the gap between the Ranji Trophy and the Indian team. We made progress quickly. That’s the reason why we are playing our first game or the second game; we are ready for the challenge. We are not behind any other players. He made it possible,” the Kakinadaa-born added.

After the Gabba heroics, many fans and experts of the game took to social media thanking Dra??vid for his contribution in developing the next gene??ration of talent. Vihari supported the sentiments, stating the Indian cricket icon deserves all the praise he got after the epic series down under.

“As youngsters, we have to give a lot of credit to him, the way he let us express our game. When we play under him, it always feels like he is more of a mentor than a coach. He is always there whenever we need him. Even in the last Australia tour, I made a call to him, saying ‘Sir, I am making my debut’. He said ‘you have done exceptionally well in Ranji Trophy, in India A, so you’re ready to play’. That’s the confidence he gave me,” Vihari added further.

Hanuma Vihari, a classical middle-order batsman from Andhra Pradesh, is the most prominent example that if a player performs well in the domestic circuit, he will one day get? a chance to wear the prestigious I?ndia Test cap.

?At the age of 24, Hanuma made his Test debut against the likes of James Anderson and Stuart Broad in England where he showed ??immense determination and scored a quality half-century.

The Hyderabad batsman arose as the superla?tive batter af??ter the completion of the West Indies tour where Team India registered a 2-0 victory over hosts in 2019. Hanuma was the pick of players as he accumulated 289 runs in four innings.

Hanuma has played wide-ranging attacks in West Indies, Australia, and New Zealand where he has faced the most challenging bowlers in the cricketing world. Speaking about the same, recently, during a live chat with Cricfit, Hanuma revealed the toughest?? bowlers he ??has faced.

Hanuma started with Andersen and Broad but said since he hasn’t played them in bowling friendly conditions so he won’t pick them.

“I’d like to pick two bowlers there; obviously, I faced James Anderson and Stuart Broad in Oval which was termed as a good batting wicket in England; otherwise, I didn’t meet them in Lords, or where conditions were bit helpful, so I really can’t comment about them,” said Hanuma.

The 26-year-old then picked ?Kiwi pacer Tim South?ee and Caribbean speedster Kemar Roach as the two toughest bowlers he has faced in his career.

“Two bowlers which I found really challenging was Tim Southee in New Zealand, especially in those wickets. Kemar Roach in West Indies was quite challenging as well with the angle which he uses, so these are the two bowlers who know their skills really well, and they were at the peak of their abilities at that point of time,” added Hanuma.

At the ?end of West Indies series, India captain Virat Kohli said the dressing room always feels calm when they see Hanuma batting out in the middle because he was so correct in his approach. The Kakinad??a-born spoke about that as well and stated how it has helped him to gain his confidence.

“It gives a lot of confidence, especially from the captain and the kind of player he (Kohli) is. Coming from him was a big boost for me. I needed that confidence and having the back from team management is very important. It’s always nice to hear such thought from him,” Hanuma added further.

Hanuma has so far played 9 Te?sts and scored 552 runs with one hundred and four fifties. In first-class, he a?verages 58.13 and has amassed 6680 runs in 85 matches with 20 centuries and 36 half-tons.

Test Specialist, Hanuma Vihari, was recently asked to make a? choice between the four pillars of Indian batting of the by-gone era.

The Fab Four of Indian cricket, comprised of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. The international careers of the four mainstays intersected during the late ’90s and culminated until the better part of the 2000s.

It was Sachin who first made his mark in 1989 during the Pakistan tour. Then, Ganguly and Dravid established the??mselves in the national side during the 1996 England tour. Later on, Laxman joined the national team in 1998.

The four dominated world cricket by amassing a whopping tally of almost 89,000 runs overall in international cricket.
Andhra Pradesh captain, Vihari, when asked to choose, went ahead with Sachin as his favourite out of the four legends of?? Indian cricket.

“Sachin Tendulkar will always be my favourite (among the Fab 4). He was my role model while growing up like many other youngsters. But all four had great qualities and were unique in their own ability. So, it was great watching them together in that era. But Sachin sir was always my favourite,” Vihari told Sporstkeeda on an Instagram Live session.

Vihari, given an opportunity during 2018 India’s tour of England, went on to become a regular feature in the whites for India.

The Andhra stalwart brought his maiden Test ton against West Indies in 2019, after smashing a half-century in his very first outing. Also, during the Test series against Engl??and, Vihari displayed his all-round abilities by picking the prized scalps of Alastair Cook, Sam Curran and Joe Root.

“I take my bowling seriously, it gives me an edge. My bowl gives that extra advantage for me and the team. I bowl in the nets regularly, the more I bowl, the better I get,” the 26-year-old added.

“It was surreal, Cook’s last test innings. To get him out in his last Test innings was special because it will be remembered in the history of the game,” concluded Vihari.

Carrying on with the recent trend of cricketers giving catching practice to their pet ??dogs, Ha??numa Vihari has posted a video of him doing the same with his golden retriever.

Earlier, Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer and New Zealand captain Ka??ne Williamson had uploaded videos of them coaching their pets.

“Catching session 1.started off with some warm-up catches 2.close in on the leg side, holding that low position. 3. close in on the offside, great anticipation. How much do you rate him for his effort @coachrsridhar,” captioned Vihari’s post.

Later, Shreyas, along with Sanju Samson, also regi??stered their opinion on?? Vihari’s practice session with the canine.

“11/10, Have you ever caught so well, You can learn a thing or two,” commented India’s fielding coach, R Sridhar. “I was expecting this, It’s all about the coach,” replied Vihari to Sridhar’s comment.

Here are the reactions:

Vihari has gone from strength to strength with each series he featured in since making hi??s debut against England in 2018.

The Hyderabad cricketer came into the reckoning through his stint at Sunrisers Hyderabad and stella?r show in first-class cricket.

Vihari brought up his maiden Test ton against West Indies last year, and strengthened the Indian batting lineup, ??coming in at number six.

The 26-year old was scheduled to take part in the thirteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), donning the colours of Delhi Capital??s. However, the tournament was postponed indefinitely, amid lockdown in India due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.
