Indian Test batter Hanuma Vihari showcased an unreal level of courage and determination during a Ranji Trophy game between Andra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday.

On Day 1 of the ongoing 4th Quarter Final at Holkar Stadium in Indore, Vihari, who was captaining the Andhra team, sustained a broken wrist after being hit by a delivery from Avesh Khan and was forced to retire hurt. However, after his team suffered a mid-??inning collapse on Day 2, the 29-year-old took the courageous decision to go out and resume his inning.

Vihari, who has played in 16 Test matches for India so far, came out at No. 11, and added 26 runs for the last wicket with No. 9 batter Lalith Mohan (22 no?t out). Earlier, For Andhra, Ricky Bhui and Kirdant Karan Shinde (110) smashed their respective centuries to help their team reach a respectable total. While Bhui scored 149 with the help of 18 four?s and a six, Shinde smashed 110, including 12 fours and a couple of maximums.

Notably, Vihari had been an integral part of the Indian team until last year when he lost his place in the squad following the emergence of Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel in the side. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Team India’s squad for the upcoming home Test series against New Zealand on Friday.

Regular captain Virat Kohli was rested for the two-match series opener, and in his absence, Ajinkya Rahane? was chosen to lead the side. Though, Kohli will join the Indian outfit as skipper in the second? and last Test.

A few notable exclusions from the Test squad included T20I skipper Rohit Sharma, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, frontline pacer Jasprit Bumrah and middle-order batsman Hanuma Vihari. Indian middle-order batsman Hanuma Vihari battled pain and injuries, to pr??oduce a memorable draw against Australia in the Sydney Test. Vih??ari played a severe hamstring injury and faced 161 balls for his unbeaten 23.

Now the Andhra Pradesh cricketer has revealed that he got an appreciation message from none other than the legendary Rahul Dravid after the completion of the third Test.

While speaking to Sports Today,? VIhari revealed the special message he receiv??ed from Dravid.

“Even after the Sydney Test, it was nice of him to send me a text. He said ‘Very well done; you did a great job’. That is the person he is, and I respect him for that,” said Vihari.

The 27-year-old improved his skills in India-A side under the guidance of Dravid. He explained how the former India skipper developed players like him, Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal and others by g??iving crucial tips and raisin??g their confidence level.

“I mean, after getting picked in the India A side. Those who were there in the side, Siraj, Saini, Shubman, Mayank, everyone who were part of that side played a lot of cricket together in India A. Also, in the last 3-4 years, we played many India A tours, and he (Rahul Dravid) was the coach.”

“I don’t think we played so many India A tours before. So that bridged the gap between the Ranji Trophy and the Indian team. We made progress quickly. That’s the reason why we are playing our first game or the second game; we are ready for the challenge. We are not behind any other players. He made it possible,” the Kakinadaa-born added.

“Two bowlers which I found really challenging was Tim Southee in New Zealand, especially in those wickets. Kemar Roach in West Indies was quite challenging as well with the angle which he uses, so these are the two bowlers who know their skills really well, and they were at the peak of their abilities at that point of time,” added Hanuma.

At the ?end of West Indies series, India captain Virat Kohli said the dressing room always feels calm when they see Hanuma batting out in the middle because he was so correct in his approach. The Kakinad??a-born spoke about that as well and stated how it has helped him to gain his confidence.

“It gives a lot of confidence, especially from the captain and the kind of player he (Kohli) is. Coming from him was a big boost for me. I needed that confidence and having the back from team management is very important. It’s always nice to hear such thought from him,” Hanuma added further.
