Sri Lankan speedster Dushmantha Chameera has yet again been ruled out of a major series. The pacer, known for his raw pace and ability to extract bounce, will miss the upc?oming white-ball leg against India due to a persistent bronchitis and respiratory infection.

A career plagued by injuries

This is another setback in a career plagued by injuries. Chameera has previously missed crucial tournaments like the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup due to calf and shoulder issues. Despite his talent, he has struggled to maintai??n fitness and consistency.

Impact on Sri Lanka’s bowling line-up

Sri Lanka will undoubtedly miss Chameera’s firepower in the home conditions. His absence puts added pressure on the remaining bowlers to deliver. The team management will have to carefully assess their bowling options to fill the void left by the injured pacer.

Replacement announced

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) released a statement which stated that Chameera is still on the mend from a bronchitis and respiratory infection, and that’s the reason he will not participate in the T20I series. The announcement also confirmed Asitha Fernando as Chameera’s substitute.

Notably, Fernando, with only three T20I matches under his belt, demonstrated his abilities with a decisive performance in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 final, securing 3 for 35, including key dismissals of Tim Seifert, and Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Despite a somewhat average LP?L season, taking seven wickets in nine matches with an economy rate of 9.71, he shows promise for the upcoming T20I series.

Updated Sri Lanka squad for the T20I series against India: Charith Asalanka (c), Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Janith Perera, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Mat?heesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara, Asitha Fernando, Binura Fernando

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) coming off a defeat against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their last ?game, made a key change to their playing XI for another home match at t??he Eden Gardens on Monday, April 29.

Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera, who came in for injured Mitchell Starc in the previous game, wasn’t named in the line-up with Aussie pacer deemed fit to replace him against Delhi Capitals (DC).

“We were looking to bowl first. Rishabh and I were having a chat – he said ‘we’re looking to bat’ and I said we’re looking to bowl. We’re trying to keep things as simple as possible. When you lose a game like that, scoring 260, it’s easy for people to go away from each other and backbite. But we’re keeping everyone together. Starc and Vaibhav Arora are back,” said the toss losing captain Shreyas Iyer.

As the excitement for the ODI World Cup 2023 in India soars higher with every passing match, it has also left fans disappointed with some star players sustaining injuries. Among all, the one team that faced a major injury setback in the ongoing tournament was Sri Lanka, as their skipper Dasu??n Shanaka was ??ruled out of the tournament due to a right thigh muscle injury.

The concerns for Islanders did not end here as their young bowler Matheesha Pathirana also got sideline?d from action for at least ten days due to an inflammation in his bowling arm.

Angelo Mathews and Dushmantha Chameera set to join Sri Lanka squad

In response to concerns surrounding injuries within the team, the Sri Lankan selectors recently made a significant decision to call up two experienced players to their squad in the form of veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews and the talented seamer Dushmantha Chameera.

Sri Lanka Cricket took to their official X (formerly Twitter) account to confirm that Mathews and Chameera will join Sri Lanka’s World Cup squad as travelling reserves. This development is noteworthy, especially considering that Chameera had initially missed the cut for Sri Lanka’s World Cup 2023 squad due to injury issues.

What led to Angelo Mathews’ surprise inclusion?

As far as Mathews’s inclusion is concerned, it has raised some eyebrows with him not being in the selectors’ plans for limited-overs cricket since 2021. Although he was given a second chance when Sri Lanka toured New Zealand in March, his dismal performances forced him out of the team. Nevertheless, his inclusion in the World Cup squad is a testament to the management’s recognition of his vast experience and ability to solve Sri Lanka’s ongoing middle-order woes.

Notably, Mathews has an impressive international ODI record with over 5,000 runs in 221 matches and 120 wickets to his name. However, his inclusion into the 15??-man squad is? still far away as that would require one existing player from the team to be ruled out.

Dushmantha Chameera’s inclusion and possible role

On the other hand, Chameera last played for Sri Lanka in June against Afghanistan and featured in the warm-up matches of the World Cup qualifiers. Hi?s ability to provide pace and accuracy makes him a vital asset to the team, and he can serve as an excellent replacement for Pathirana if the young pacer is unable to fully recover from his injury.

In the third and final ODI match of the Afghanistan tour of Sri Lanka 2023, the hosts secured a comfortable 9-wicket victory at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium. With this win, the Islanders clinched the series, ha?ving previou?sly won the second match by 132 runs.

Batting first, Afghanistan’s innings got off to a shaky start as they struggled to build partnerships and lost wickets at regular intervals. The tourists were eventually bundled out for just 116 runs in 22.2 overs. Experienced campaigner Mohammad Nabi top-scored for Afghanistan with 23 runs off 23 deliveries, while Gulbadin Naib contributed 20 runs off 21 balls.

For the Lankans, Dushmantha Chameera was the standout bowler, picking up 4 wickets for 63 runs in his 9 overs. Similarly, Lahiru Kumara and Wanindu Hasaranga also mad??e valuable contributions, taking 2 and 3 w?ickets respectively.

Chasing the paltry target, Sri Lanka cruised to victory by losing just one wicket. Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne formed a soli?d opening partnership, with Nissanka scoring a brilliant half-century, 51 runs off 34 deliveries, including 8 boundaries and 2 sixes. Karunaratne also?? impressed with a well-made 56 runs off 45 balls, comprising 7 fours. Sri Lanka reached the target in just 16 overs, securing a comprehensive win.

Sri Lanka fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera has been ruled out of the remainder of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 due to a calf injury.

Earlier, Chameera missed the 2022 Asia Cup because of the same problem, but was included in the Sri Lankan World Cup squad after passing th?e fit??ness test.

The right-arm pacer played an important role in Sri Lanka’s big win over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Geelong on Tuesday, October 18. He claimed the first three wickets in UAE’s innings and ended up with figures of 3 for 15. However, the 30-year-old suffered an injury in the last over of his spell and was seen shaking his head as he was taken off the field.

There are also concerns over Danushka Gunathilaka – who missed the UAE game, and Pramod Madushan, with both set to go for scans of their hamstring injuries. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s medical team is hopeful of Madushan’s recovery ahead of his side’s do-or-die encounter against the Netherlands on Thursday, October 20.

Silverwood believes it may have something to do with the weather conditions

“The temperatures we’re experiencing, the boys are not used to,”  Sri Lanka head coach Chris Silverwood was quoted as saying in ICC’s press-release.

“It’s certainly not Colombo. Even I’m cold, a little bit. You can’t help it. The preparation and facilities we were given having arrived early, were superb. The boys have prepped the best we possibly can. We had a good camp in Kandy before we got on an airplane and came here. We’ve made the best of what we’ve had really.”

“I think we adjusted pretty well today [on game against UAE],” added Silverwood. “In the first game [against Namibia] we didn’t read the conditions particularly well, and we certainly didn’t grasp them. We’re not hiding from that. That’s something that we spoke about in the debrief quite honestly.”

Sri Lanka’s premier bowler, especially in the shortest format, Dushmantha Chameera, has been ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup 2022, scheduled to begin in United Ara?b Emirates (UAE) from August 27.

Sri Lanka Cricket informed the development on micro-blogging website Twitter, mentioning that Chameera will miss the ??multi-t?eam event due to an injury he sustained on his left leg during a practice session.

Notably, on Saturday, Chameera was named in Sri Lanka’s 18-man squad for the Asia Cup despite not completing a full recovery. It was understood that the right-arm quick would be able to regain full match fitness.

The 30-year-old fast bowler has been replaced by Nuwan Thushara, wh?o had been part of the standby list when th?e squad was announced.

“Asia Cup: Sri Lanka Team Updates @dushmantha05, who was named in the 20-member #AsiaCup2022 squad, will not take part in the Asia Cup, as he has sustained an injury (on his left leg) during practices. SLC Selectors brought in Nuwan Thushara into the 20-man squad. #SLC #lka” tweeted Sri Lanka Cricket.

There is no denial that Chameera’s absence will put more pressure on an inexperienced Sri Lankan seam-bowling attack at the Asia Cup. Their fast-bowling unit, which features the likes of Dilshan Madushanka, Madushan, Asitha Fernando and Matheesha Pathirana ?are all uncapped in T20Is. The Islanders have allrounders Chamika Karunaratne and Dasun Shanaka as the other options.

However, their spin attack has much more stability with Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Praveen Jayawickrama and Jeffrey Vandersay in the mix. The 2014 Asia Cup winners will start their campaign in the tournament opener against Afghanistan on August 27.

Sri Lanka squad for Asia Cup 2022 (Updated):

Dasun Sha??naka (c), Danushka Gunathilaka, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Ashen Bandara, Dhananjaya de Silva, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, Praveen Jayawickrama, Ch?amika Karunaratne, Dilshan Madushanka, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwanidu Fernando, Nuwan Thushara, Dinesh Chandimal
