Dinesh Chandimal, one of Sri Lanka’s most seasoned batters, showcased his experience and skill with a stunning century on Day 1 of the second Test against New Zealand. Chandimal, known for his resilience, brought up his maiden Tes??t hundred against the Black Caps, adding another memorable kn??ock to his illustrious career.

Dinesh Chandimal’s century brings Sri Lanka to a strong position

The moment came during the 58th over of Sri Lanka’s first innings when Cha??ndimal confidently drove a delivery from Mitchell Santner to long-off, reaching the coveted three-figure mark at the iconic Galle International Stadium.

His celebration was iconic as he stretched his arms wide and smiled with pride before performing a baby cradle gesture, a nod to his growing family. This ton marked Chandimal’s 16th century in Test cricket, a testament to his consistency and class over the years.

Sri Lanka in control after second session

Sri Lanka controlled another session, with only one wicket falling, and even that came as a result of a miscommunication between the batters. Chandimal, in an unfortunate mix-up, ran out Dimuth Karunaratne, who was looking set after scoring a composed 46 from 109 balls. The run-out was a soft dismissal and the only blemis??h in an otherwise dominant session for ??Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, Chandimal continued to build on his fine innings, bringing up his century, while Angelo Mathews provided strong support at the other end. Mathews remained unbeaten on 35, and Chandimal on 106, as the pair guided Sr?i Lanka to a solid position heading ?into the final session of the day.

In the aftermath of a challenging first Test match against England at the Old Trafford, Manchester, former Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal expressed immense pride in the visiting team’s performance despite a five-wicket loss. The match, which saw England chase down 205 runs in their second innings, showcased both the strengths and areas for improvement within the Sri Lankan squad.

Dinesh Chandimal terms it as a rollercoaster of emotions

Chandimal’s post-match comments highlighted the emotional highs and lows experienced by his team.

“We are over the moon as a team, not for the result but the way we played in this game is unbelievable. In the first half an hour on the first day, we lost three wickets. Milan [Rathnayake] and Dhananjaya batted brilliantly and took us through the game,?/em> Chandimal stated emphasizing the team’s resilience in the face of adversity.

The match began on a shaky note for Sri Lanka, losing three wickets within the first half-hour, but the partnership between Milan Rathnayake and Dhananjaya de Silva steadied the ship, allowing the team t?o recover and post a respectable first innings total of 236.

Key performers shine amidst challenges

Reflecting on the batting performance, Chandimal praised the efforts of his teammates. The duo’s contributions were crucial in building a foundation after the initial collapse, with Rathnayake scoring 72 runs and de Silva adding 74.

However, Chandimal acknowledged the need for improvement, particularly from the tailenders, stating, “We really fought back as a team. We were short of 40-50 runs but every time we are telling this after losing the game, we have to learn that and especially our tailenders didn’t contribute that well. If they could hang in there for 10-15 overs, we could have got those runs so unfortunately it didn’t click.”

Chandimal looks at the bowling brilliance as silver lining

On the bowling front, Chandimal was equally effusive in his praise for Asitha Fernando and Prabath Jayasuriya, who ??both delivered commendable performances throughout the innings.

“When we come to the bowling, Asitha and Prabath have done a tremendous job throughout the innings,” he remarked, highlighting their critical roles in keeping the gam??e competitive.

Asitha’s efforts were particularly notable, as he took key wickets and demonstrated his potential as a future star for Sri Lanka.

Learning from defeat is a step towards improvement

Despite the disappointment of the loss, C??handimal remained optimistic about the future.

“We have a lot of positive stuff so I’m sure we can give a good fight again at Lord’s and I’m sure we can win a game here before we go back to Sri Lanka,?/em> he asserted.

This positive mindset ??is essential for a team looking to build momentum and confidence in upcoming matches.

Chandimal acknowledging individual brilliance

Chandimal also took a moment to commend the performance of debutant Kamindu Mendis, who scored a century in his first Test match.

“He is unbelievable. First tour to England with the national team, in the first game scoring a century. It’s a wonderful thing to do, he is a world class player as far as I’m concerned?/em> Chandimal said, reflecting on Mendis?remarkable achievement.

Chandimal’s own experience of taking two tours to score a century in England made Mendis’ feat even more impressive in his eyes.

“If he can come and play in county cricket for one or two years, it will be really good for him, for his future,?/em> he added, recognizing the potential for growth and development in Mendis’ career.

Chandimal also shared insights into his own journey, revealing?? that he had recently dealt with an injury.

?em>I had the same injury six months ago… hopefully, I’ll be fit to play the next game,?he mentioned, demonstrati??ng his commitment to the team and his desire to contribute fully in future matches.

England getting the best out of Sri Lanka

The first Test match saw England emerge victorious by five wickets. Sri Lanka struggled in their first innings, scoring 236 runs, with notable contributions from Rathnayake and de Silva. England responded with 358 runs, capitalizing on Sri Lanka’s bowling inconsistencies. In their second innings, Sri Lanka made 326 runs, but England chased down the target of 205 with relative ease, securing the win.

The match showcased the potential of the Sri Lankan team while also highlighting areas that require attention. As they prepare for the next challenge at Lord’s, the focus will be on building on the positives and addressing the shortcomings identified during this match. Chandimal’s leadership and the team’s collective spirit will be crucial as they aim for a turnaround in fortunes.

Dinesh Chandimal‘s dismissal on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester was a critical moment for Sri Lanka. Facing Shoaib Bashir, Chandimal was trapped LBW (leg before wicket) on the third ??ball of the 23rd over.

Dinesh Chandimal’s unusual dismissal

Bashir was bowling his second over of the match. The delivery that got Chandimal out was a back-of-a-length ball pitched just outside the off-stump. What made this delivery particularly challenging was its lack of bounce – a characteristic that caught Chandimal off guard.

Chandimal, a seasoned campaigner, initially moved his front foot slightly across, intending to work the ball to the leg side. However, the ball stayed lower than expected after pitching. As a result, instead of bouncing over or around his pads, it skidded off the surface and struck him low on the pads, near the ankle. This lack of bounce, combined with Chandimal’s slight shuffle across the stumps, left him in a vulnerable position. His attempt to play the ball to the leg side failed, as the bat could not make contact with the ball before it struck his pads.

The umpire’s decision

The on-field umpire immediately raised his finger, signaling Chandimal out LBW. Despite the confidence of the appeal, Chandimal opted for a DRS review, perhaps hoping the ball might have missed the stumps or bounced too high. Nevertheless, the ball-tracking technology showed that the delivery was hitting the stumps in line with all three reds—confirming that the ball would have struck the mi??ddle and leg stumps.

The review upheld the umpire’s original decision, and Chandimal had to walk back to the pavilion. Chandimal’s dismissal left Sri Lanka struggling at 72/5 after 22.3 overs, putting them in a precarious position early in their innings. His loss was significant as Chandimal was one of Sri Lanka’s more experienced middle-order batters, and his wicket further compounded the pressure on the remaining batters.

Here’s the video:

Sri Lanka’s gritty lower-order fightback

Sri Lanka’s top order faltered dramatically, collapsing to 113/7. Nonetheless, captain Dhananjaya de Silva and debutant Milan Rathnayake stabilized the innings with a vital 66-run stand for the eighth wicket, with De Silva scoring a resilient 74. After his dismissal, Rathnayake, alongside Viswa Fernando, added another 50 runs for the ninth wicket, with Rathnayak?e making a valuable 72. Sri Lanka were eventually all out for 236. England, with all wickets intact, trails by 214 runs and reached 22/0 before bad light halted play.

Amid lockdown, many cricketers are engaging in different things to interact with their fans. Some are revealing their favourite batsmen/bowler while some are coming up with their best XI team consisting of legendary cricketers from ??different teams.

Recently, Australia’s spinner Ashton Agar dropped his dream XI which featured many pre-eminent names from this sport. Latest on the trend is Sri Lanka batsman Dinesh Chandimal. On Tuesday, he revealed his all-time Test XI of the players he has played with and against.

Chandimal picked five players from his nation, two from India and South Africa, and one each from West Indies and England. Although his batting line-up looks a bit unusual, for example, Chandimal picked iconic Sachin Tendulkar as an opener. The Lankan batsman chose Alastair Cook as Sachin’s partner.

With 15,921 runs, Sachin is the highest run-getter in the longest format of the game, while Cook with 12,472 runs to his name is the leading run-scorer fo??r England and fifth highest overall.

For the next two spots, Chandimal went with his countryman Kumar Sangakkara and India captain Virat Kohli. The b?atting maestro, Sangakkara ??is the leading run-getter for the Islanders. He has scored 12,400 runs in red-ball format, whereas Kohli has so far accumulated 7240 runs.

Apart from Sangakkara??, Chandimal picked four more Lankan players in the form of Mahela Jayawardene, and bowling trio of Rangana Herath, Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan. The 30-year-old named Jayawardene as captain of his all-time Test ??XI.

Muralitharan is the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with as many as 800 scalps to his name. On the other hand, Herath with 433 wickets in red-ball format is the second-highest wicket-taker f??or Sri Lanka, while Vaas is also just behind the spin duo with as many as 355 sca?lps in the longest format of the game.

Chandimal went for Jacques Kallis as the all-rounder and Dale Steyn as the prime pacer. For the middle-order, Chandimal picked West Indies’ genius, Brian Lara. Kallis is the third-highest run-getter in Tests with 13,289 runs to his name, whereas Lara is at the seventh spot in most run-scorers with 11,953 runs.

Here is Dinesh Chandimal’s all-time Test XI:

Alastair Cook, Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangak??kara (wk??), Virat Kohli, Brian Lara, Mahela Jayawardene (c), Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn, Rangana Herath, Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan.

Fake fielding on the cricket field is quite a rare view but when i??t does occur it c?an often lead to doubts in the minds of batsmen and even lead to their dismissals.

On Saturday, during the 1st Test match between India and Sri Lanka, we witnessed one of those uncommon moments on the fourth ball of the 53rd over, when Bhuvneshwar Kumar pushed one through covers.

While he was attempting to come back for the second run, the Sri Lankan skipper Dinesh Chandimal, put in a s??lide even when the ?ball was nowhere near him.

According to the new ICC rules, this is “fake fielding”. However, on-field umpires ?Nigel Llong, Joel Wilson decided against handing a penalty. This left an animated Indian skipper Virat Kohli visi??bly unimpressed as he gestured towards the cameras for ??a penalty of five runs.

Virat Kohli signals 5 runs

In??cidentally, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has recently changed the norms and introduced a law of penalising teams whose fielders engage in ‘fake fielding? A similar incident had occurred during the recently concluded JLT Cup in Australia where Queensland Bulls’s Marnus Labuschagne was penalised for ‘fake fielding?

According to the lawmakers of the game this action is against the spirit of cricket. MCC’s new Law 41.5 states that “It is unfair for any fielder willfully to attempt, by word or action, to distract, deceive or obstruct either batsman after the striker has received the ball.?/p>
