Prominent sports journalist Harsha Bhogle, on Friday, lambasted England media for their coverage regarding Deepti Sharma’s run-out of Charlie Dean during India Women’s third ODI against England at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.

The run-out, which helped India to whit??ewash England, has become the talking point,? with the Indian all-rounder receiving massive criticism from England players and the media.

Notably, England’s last-wicket pair of Dean and Freya Davies had put on a handy partnership and took their side very close to victory. However, Deepti, after noticing that Dean was outside her crease at the non-striker’s end, stopped in her bowling stride and whipped the bails off.

Upon seeing unnecessary criticism of Deepti in the English media, Bhogle said the Indian star doesn’t deserve to face any heat since she played by the laws of the game. Bhogle was also surprised that the England media didn’t question Dean for ‘gaining an illegal advantage’.

In a series of tweets, Bhogle explained why the reaction of English media had been unfai??r towards Deepti. He observed that England need to come out of colonial thoughts and stop wondering that whate??rver they think right will be acceptable to the world.

“I find it very disturbing that a very large section of the media in England is asking questions of a girl who played by the laws of the game & none at all of another who was gaining an illegal advantage and was a habitual offender. That includes reasonable people & I think it is a cultural thing. The English thought it was wrong to do so & because they ruled over a large part of the cricket world, they told everyone it was wrong.

“The colonial domination was so powerful that few questioned it. As a result, the mindset still is that what England considers wrong should be considered wrong by the rest of the cricket world, much like the ‘line�?the Aussies say you must not cross having decided what the line should be which is fine in their culture but may not be for others. The rest of the world is no longer obligated to think the way England does and so we see what is so plainly wrong.

“So too the notions that turning tracks are bad but seaming tracks are fine. The reason I say it is cultural is that it is what they are brought up to think. They don’t think it is wrong. The problem arises and we are guilty of it too, when people sit in judgement of each other’s approach. England wants the rest of the world not to like running out batters at the non-striker’s end and have been vitriolic and abusive towards Deepti and others who have done it.

“We come hard too asking others to wake up from centuries old colonial slumber. The easiest thing is to play by the laws of the game & stop worrying about subjective interpretation of the spirit of the game, stop forcing opinions on others. The law says the non-striker must be behind the crease till the bowler’s arm is at its highest point.

“If you obey that, the game will move along smoothly. If you point fingers at others, like many in England have at Deepti, you remain open to questions asked of you. It is best if those in power, or who were in power. Stop believing that the world must move at their bidding. As in society, where judges implement the law of the land, so too in cricket. The controversy regarding Deepti Sharma’s run-out of Charlie Dean has gone further, with England Women skipper Heather Knight accusing the all-rounder of ‘lying’ over her claims that Dean was warned before her dismissal on Saturday.

Notably, in a crunch situation when the English team needed 17 runs to win with their last-wicket pair of Dean and Freya Davies in the middle, Deepti, after noticing that Dean was outside her crease at the non-striker’s end, stopped in her bowling stride and whipped the bails off.

India all-rounder Deepti Sharma has opened up on the controversial run-out of Charlie Dean in the recently-concluded third ODI against England Women at Lord’s on Saturday.

Notably, with the hosts needing 17 runs to win after their last-wicket pair of Dean and Freya Davies added 35 runs, Deepti, upon noticing that Dean was outside her crease at the non-striker’s end, stopped in her bowling stride and whipped the bails off.

The incident triggered spirit-of-cricket debates, with several experts and former cricketers from England expressing their displeas??ure at the dismissal. Even though it was pretty much within the laws, many felt that the Indian team should have issued a warning.

However, now, Deepti has herself revealed that she took off the bails at the non-striker’s end only after issuing several warnings to the opposition. The star all-rounder said they also spoke to the umpire, but Dean kept making the same mistake.

“It was historic for sure. For the first time, we defeated England in their own country and won the series 3-0. That was our plan because she was repeatedly doing it, and we had warned them too. We had also informed the umpires. But still, she was right there, so there wasn’t much we could do. We did everything according to the rules and guidelines,” Deepti told the reporters upon Team India’s arrival in India.

Not long after the unnecessary controversy, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) — the custodians of the laws of cricket – issued a statement clarifying their stance on the subject. Notably, the MCC had earlier this year moved the mode of dismissal from the ‘unfair play’ section of their laws to the ‘run out’ category.

“MCC this year announced amendments to the laws of cricket to move being run out at the non-striker’s end, from law 41 unfair play to law 38 run out. This was done to clarify this matter and to place an onus on batters to ensure that they do not leave the crease at the non-striker’s end prior to a bowler releasing the ball. The Law is clear, as it needs to be for all umpires to be able to easily interpret throughout all levels of the game and at all moments in the game,” the MCC said in a statement.

“Cricket is a broad church, and the spirit by which it is played is no different. As custodians of the Spirit of Cricket, MCC appreciates its application is interpreted differently across the globe. Respectful debate is healthy and should continue, as where one person sees the bowler as breaching the Spirit in such examples, another will point at the non-striker gaining an unfair advantage by leaving their ground early.MCC’s message to non-strikers continues to be to remain on their ground until they have seen the ball leave the bowler’s hand. Then dismissals, such as the one seen yesterday, cannot happen. Whilst yesterday was indeed an unusual end to an exciting match, it was properly officiated and should not be considered as anything more,” the statement added.

The third and final Women ODI between India and England at Lord’s finished with a clean sweep for the visitors, but the last wicket set social media on fire with mixed reactions coming from the cricket fraternity.

Notably, England required 52 runs to win when they lost their ninth wicket. But, the final pair of Charlie Dean and Freya Davis added 35 runs to put clouds over India’s chances of registering a clean sweep.

However, that’s when Deepti Sharma showed an incredible game-awareness as she noticed Dean leaving her crease at the non-striker’s end before the delivery was bowled. The Indian all-rounder then stopped and ran Dean out to secure a 16-run victory for the tourists.

Despite that, there still remains considerable taboo over the dismissal, with a number of cricketers and fans believing it is against the spirit of the game. While England players expressed disappointment, the Indian cricket fraternity, including India Women’s captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, came out in support of Deepti.

India’s limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma has been nominated for the prestigious ‘Khel Ratna’, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday.

Rohit’s opening partner Shikhar Dhawan has been once again nominated for the Arjuna award along with team’s senior-most fast bowler Ishant Sharma.

T?he 34-ye??ar-old Dhawan, earlier, missed out on winning the Arjuna award in 2018.

In the women’s category, the BCCI nominated all-rounder Deepti Sharma for the Arjuna award. Deepti has been a consistent performer for India in both ODIs and T20Is in the past three years.

Speaking about the nominations, the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said, “We went through a lot of data and considered various parameters before shortlisting the nominees. We feel he is worthy of getting the prestigious Khel Ratna award for his commitment, conduct, consistency and his leadership skills.

“Ishant Sharma is the most senior member of the Test squad, and his contribution has been vital in Indian team’s long run as the No. 1 Test side. Fast bowlers are prone to injuries, and Ishant has had a fair share of them, but he has fought hard to be back on the park every time. Shikhar has been consistently scoring at the top, and his performances in the ICC events have been significant. Deepti is a genuine all-rounder, and her contribution to the team has been vital, Ganguly added.

The Indian women’s team maximized their chances to qualify for the finals of the ongoing Women’s T20I Tri-Series in Australia by beating the hosts in a record run chase.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the Team of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 with India’s Mithali Raj as its captain.

A five member selection panel comprising of Geoff Allardice – the ICC General Manager, Cricket, and Chairman Event Technical Committee, Ian Bishop – former West Indies fast bowler, Charlotte Edwards – former England captain, Snehal Pradhan – former Indian player and Lisa Sthalekar– former Australian all-rounder named the elite 12-member team post the tournament.
