David Wiese, Namibia’s star all-rounder and former South African player, has announced his retirement from international cricket following his team’s loss to England in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Wiese, known for his aggressive batting a??nd handy pace bowling, bowed out on a high note with a quick-fire 27 runs off just 12 deliveries in the rain-affected match against England. However, his efforts were in vain as Namibia fell short of the tar?get by 41 runs.

‘It just seemed like the right time’: David Wiese

In the press-conference after the game, Wiese stated that the cur??rent sit??uation was the best for him to end his international career and felt it was the right time to move on.

“Yeah, yeah, for now. I mean, next year’s T20 World Cup is still two years away, I’m 39 years old now, so, in terms of international cricket, I don’t know if there’s much left in me. Obviously, I still like to play the game for a couple more years, I feel like I’ve still got a lot to contribute and a lot to play. But I just feel like what better place to end a special career for me personally with Namibia. I’ve had a lot of good times with them and to play my last game for them possibly at a World Cup against a world-class team like England, it just seemed like the right time,” said Wiese.

Wiese played international cricket for both South Africa and Namibia

The 39-year-old began his international cricket journey with South Africa in 2013, featuring in 20 T20Is and six ODIs. He was part of the Proteas’ T20 World Cup squad in 2016 but couldn’t help them progress beyond the Super 10 stage. After a five-year hiatus, Wiese switched allegiances and made a remarkable comeback in 2021, representing Namibia in their maiden T20 World Cup campaign.

The switch proved fruitful as Wiese emerged as a key player for Namibia. He l?ed them to their first-ever World Cup victory, chasing down a target of 165 against the Netherlands with an unbeaten 66. He finished the to??urnament as the sixth-highest run-scorer with 227 runs and also chipped in with six wickets.

Wiese continued to be a vital cog in the Namibian team, featuring in nine ODIs and 34 T20Is since the 2021 World Cup. He amassed 760 runs and scalped 41 wickets across? these formats.

While Namibia’s World Cup journey ended in the group stage this time around, Wiese’s contribution to their rise in international cricket will be remembered. His decision to retire marks the end of an era for Namibian cricket, leaving a void for future generations to fill.

Namibia have named their 16-man squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, to be held in the West Indies and USA, with experienced all-rounder David Wiese retaining his spot.

4th T20 World Cup for David Wiese

The 38-year-old Wiese, born in South Africa, will be featuring in his fourth T20 World Cup. He previously represented his native South Africa in the 2016 edition but switched allegiance to Namibia, his father’s birth country. Wiese was a key part of the Namibian squads at the 2021 and 2022 World Cups.

Namibia will be banking on Wiese’s all-round skills. His experience playing in both the West Indies and the USA will also be valuable. Wiese played for the St Lucia Kings in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in 2021 and 2022, and was part of the victorious MI New York team in the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) tournament in the US last year.

Surprise omissions in the Namibian squad

The Capitals won the toss and chose to bowl first, but it was the Giants who came out on top as they posted a strong score of 181-6 in their 20 overs. James Vince contributed 76 runs to the team’s total, while Shimron Hetmyer played a cameo of 37 runs.

In reply, Dubai Capitals struggled in their run chase and were bundled out for just 80 in 14.3 overs. Joe Root (20) was the top scorer for the Capitals but couldn’t help his team overcome the Giants’ total.

Meanwhile, David Wiese (3 wickets) and Chris Jordan (2 wickets) proved instrumental in the Giants’ victory. Among those three dismissals by Wiese, one was a stunning caught and bowled that has been making rounds on social media.

On the last ball of the fifth over, Wiese bowled a fuller angled-in delivery to Capitals’ skipper Rovman Powell, which the? right-handed batter tried to flick, but the b?all got a leading edge of the bat and went straight in the air towards the right of the bowler.

Wiese coming up from a follow-through dived wide to his right, got his hands on the ball and plucked it to send Powell back to the pavilion for a duck. The teammates and the spectators well appreciated the 37-year-old pacer’s outstanding effort.

In a thrilling contest which went down to the wire, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) defeated Namibia ?to knock them out of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022.

Chasing 149 for victory at Simonds Stadium in Geelong, Namibia were almost out of the game after losing seven wickets for just 69, but their star-allrounder David Wiese yet again stood up and bailed his team out to take the contest to t??he last over.

Wiese stitched a stunning 70-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Ruben Trumpelmann and Namibia were looking set to pull off a thrilling victory.
