The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee has unveiled a 16-member squad for the upcoming home ODI series against Afghanistan. This squad has received approval from the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Harin Fernando. Kusal Mendis has been appointed as the captain, with Charith Asalanka serving as his deputy.

Dasun Shanaka’s exclusion

Former skipper Dasun Shanaka ??has been notably left out of the squad. The decision was primarily influenced by his recent poor form, particularly ??evident in the last Zimbabwe ODI and T20I series held at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.

Notably, Shanaka, who previ?ously captained the ODI squad during the last World Cup but later suffered an injury, was given an opportunity to play in both the Zimbabwe ODI and T20 series under the new selection committee. Despite show?casing promising performances in domestic tournaments, Shanaka failed to impress with both bat and ball during the Zimbabwe series, leading to his exclusion from the Afghanistan series squad.

Squad changes

Chamika Karunaratne has been recalled to the ODI squad, while leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay, who featured in the recently concluded Zimbabwe ODI squad, will miss the Afghanis??tan series due to a finger injury??.

Key inclusions

All-rounder Janith Liyanage, who performed brilliantly in the second ODI against Zimbabwe, secured his position in the squad alongside Dilshan Madushanka, Dushmantha Chameera, Pramod Madushan, Sahan Arachchige, Akila Dananjaya, Dunith Wellalage.

Not to mention, all the three ODIs between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are s?cheduled to take place at Pallekele Inte??rnational Cricket Stadium on the 9th, 11th, and 14th of February.

Sri Lanka squad for ODI series against Afghanistan:

Kusal Mendis (c), Charith Asalanka (vc), Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Janith Liyanag??e, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka, Pramod Madushan, Sahan Arachchige, Akila Dananjaya, Dunith Wellalage, Chamika Karunaratne, Shevon Daniel

In a significant turn of events, the Sri Lankan cricket team has been compelled to appoint a new captain for the remaining matches of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as Dasun Shanaka has be??en ruled out of the tournament owing to a right thigh muscle injury.

The decision comes as a big blow to Sri Lankan, who are one amongst the four teams to have not won a game yet in the ongoing tournamnet. Shanaka’s absence will be keenly felt by the Islanders, especially in the upcoming crucial matches.

Chamika Karunaratne replaces Dasun Shanaka in the squad

Chamika Karunaratne, who was on the ??reserve list, has been added as a replacement player.

“Karunaratne, who has played 23 ODIs, was named as a replacement after Shanaka was ruled out due to a right thigh muscle injury sustained during Sri Lanka’s match against Pakistan on 10th October. The injury needs three weeks to recover,” said the ICC in its official st?atement after the T??echnical Committee approved a change in the Sri Lankan squad.

With the to??urnament in full swing, the new skipper has also been named by Sr??i Lanka.

Kusal Mendis to lead Sri Lanka in remaining matches

Kusal Mendis, who has been leading the Sri Lanka side from the front with the bat, will now have to take the captaincy charge immediately and lead the team wit??h determination and skill.

Mendis will undoubtedly face the challenging task of steering his team in to top four with only eight matches remaining for the 1996 World Cup champions. Sri Lanka have to win a minimum of six games and keep ??a check on their net run rate to reach the semifinals.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on their newly appointed captain and Sri Lankan fans will be hoping for their team’s strong comeback and impressive performances in the remaining matches of the World Cup.

The second T20I between India and Sri Lanka turned out to be ??an absolute thriller where? the Islanders managed to claim a 16-run win to level the ongoing three-match series.

Chasing the massive target of 207, the hosts had a terrible start as they lost five wickets for just 57 inside at the halfway stage. The likes of Ishan Kishan (2), Shubman Gill (5), debutant Rahul Tripathi (5) and Deepak Hooda (9) ??all failed to impr?ess and couldnโ€™t even score in double figures.

As the situation was looking completely out of hand, the pair of Suryakumar Yadav and Axar Patel tried to control things by c??ounterattacking. The duo took Lankan bowlers to the cleaners and shifted the momentum towards the Men in Blue. Both Surya and Axar smashed quick fifties and added 91 runs for the sixth wicket. But a mistimed shot from Suryakumar led to his dismissal for 51 off 3?6 deliveries.

Axar, on the other end, kept founding boundaries to take India close to the victory line. He was well supported by tailender Shivam Mavi as the duo brought down the equation to 21 needed in the final over. Axar, after getting the strike by Mavi, picked up a couple, and in order to hit a biggie, the all-rounder got out. Axar ended up scoring 65 from just 31 deliveries as Sri Lanka managed to record a thri?lling win by 16 runs.

Earlier, skipper Dasun Shanaka and opener Kusal Mendis smashed sizzling half-centuries to power Sri Lanka to a massive 206/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Asked to bat, openers Mendis (53) and Pathum Nissanka (33) formed an 80-run?? stand to give the tourists ??a solid start.

The visitors then lost momentum as Indian bowlers, led by pace sensation Umran Malik (3/48), bagged a flurry of wickets to decrease the run flow. However, Lankan captain Shanaka (56 not out) and all-rounder Charith Asalanka (37) smashed conse??cutive boundaries to take their side over the 200-run mark.

With a heavy trend of teams winning matches while chasing in the Asia Cup 2022 in UAE, when Sri Lanka lost the toss and were asked to bat first by Pakistan, many thought the Men in Green would end up on the winning side. However, against all odds, the Islanders managed to script a terrific turnaround and defeated Pakistan to win the epic final and clinch their 6th overall Asia Cup title.

After the historic victory over Pakistan, Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka revealed how MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) inspired his troops to win the summit clash. Shanaka said that the team ha??d in?? mind the final of IPL 2021 when the Super Kings batted first and won.

Notably, in IPL 2021, which was also played in the UAE, the teams batting second did win more matches. But CSK did the reverse, batted first, and defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to clinch the title.

“In IPL 2021, Chennai won the match batting first, and that is what was in my mind, we talked about it,” Shanaka said in the post-match press conference.

“These youngsters know the conditions really well. Wanindu made a huge impact after losing five wickets. Chamika and DDS batted really well too. The last ball, six, was the turning point. 170 was mentally the difference, as 160 always feels chasable. As a youngster, we knew Madushanka would deliver, and as a captain, we had to back him,” he added.

Not to mention, the Lankans had lost their opening game in the tournament against Afghanista??n, but after that, they won every single game and clinched?? the title. Shanaka said it was good they lost early as it gave them enough reason to assess themselves.

“It can happen to any team in the world. [On the first game against Afghanistan] It happened for a good reason. We had serious discussions after that game. Each and every individual did well for us, and that is how we became champions. The fielding improved a lot in the finals. We had some mistakes in the league stages. We were 100% today, credit to the players and the coaching staff. I want to thank the Sri Lankan cricket board and the selectors as well,” Shanaka added further.

Dasun Shanaka‘s sensational batting display helped Sri Lanka pull off a memorable victory against Australia in the third and final T20I in Pallekele on Saturday (June 11).

With the series already bagged, Australia went into the third T20I looking to register a whitewash over the Islanders. However, the Sri Lankan captain had some other plans as he went absolute berserk in the final stages of the chase and steered his side to one of the most incredible victories in the shortest for??mat.

It was certainly a next-to-impossible situation as the hosts were reeling at 112/6 after 16 overs, needing 65 runs from 24 deliveries with Shanaka struggling to get going (4 off 10). The equation then became more improbable as Ashton Agar only conceded six runs in the 17th o??ver, leaving Sri Lanka to get 59 off just 18 deliveries.

Shanaka then changed the script and brought back Sri Lanka from the dead to register a thrilling win. He slammed Josh Hazlewood for 21 runs in the 18th over, followed by 18 runs in the penultimate over bowled by Jhye Richardson.

Still, the home team needed 19 runs off the final over bowled by Kane Richardson. But Shanaka w??as already in the mood to script history as he smashed the bowler for three boundaries, including a six, to win the game with one ball to spare and four wickets in hand. Shanaka scored unbeaten 54 off just 25 deliveries, with the help of five fours and four sixes.

Earlier, notable contributions from David Warner (39), Steve Smith 38 (not out), and Marcus Stoinis (38) helped the visitors post a competitive total of 176/5 on the board in their allotted 20 overs. Maheesh Theekshana was again impressive with his bowling. He conceded only 25 runs in his quota of f4 overs and also picked up a c?ouple of wickets??.

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka grabbed a stunning catch to dismiss India’s middle-order batsman Nitish Rana in the third and final T20I of the three-match series at the R. Premad??asa Stadium, Colombo on Thursday night.

It all happened in the ninth over of the first innings when Rana aimed to sneak a single off the final deliver?y. However, he was put off by the slowness of the ball and ended up chipping it straight into? the follow-through of Shanaka.

The right-ar?m pacer dived to his left and took a one-handed stunner to send Rana back to the dugout on 6 (15).

All-round Sri Lanka thrash India by seven wickets
