Sri Lanka batter Danushka Gunathilaka was on Thursday granted bail by the Sydney Court, ??while hearing his second plea in the rap?e case.

The 31-year-old was in jail for 11 days after being charged for raping a woman in Sydney during his team’s T20 World Cup stint earlier this month.

The New South Wales (NSW) Police had reported that the cricketer and woman met after talking for several days via an online dating app??lication. Gunathilaka was arrested in the early hours of November 6 at the Hyatt Regency hotel on Sussex Street, before the Sri Lankan team flew home without him.

The Panadura-born was detained for 11 nights after being denied bail in Downing Centre Local Court on November 7. However, the case resurfaced on Thursday in the Local Court when defence barrister Murugan Thangaraj, SC, reapplied for Gunathilaka’s release.

Conditions for the bail

  • 150,000 Australian dollar surety given by an undisclosed person

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has suspended Danushka Gunathilaka from all forms of crick??et with immediate effect after he was arrested in Sydney on Sunday over rape charges at the ongoing T20 World Cup.

In an official statement, SLC said, “The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket decided to suspend national player Danushka Gunathilaka from all forms of cricket with immediate effect and will not consider him for any selections after being informed that Mr. Gunathilaka was arrested and charged with sexual assault of a woman in Australia.

“Furthermore, Sri Lanka Cricket will take the necessary steps to promptly carry out an inquiry into the alleged offense, and, upon conclusion of the aforementioned court case in Australia, steps will be taken to penalise the said player if found guilty.

“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to emphasize that it adopts a ‘zero tolerance’ policy for any such conduct by a player and will provide all the required support to the Australian law enforcement authorities to carry out an impartial inquiry into the incident,” it further read.

Gunath?ilaka was communicating with a woman via the online dating app Tinder, and he allegedly sexually assaulted her after they met. The Sri Lankan cricketer was subsequently arrested, and he attended court via a video link. The bail hearing took place at the Downing Centre court in Sydney.

Defence attorney Ananda Amaranath did not immediately respond to the bail request made by Gunathilaka’s lawyer.

Gunathilaka was part of the 15-member Sri Lanka squad at the 2022 T20 World Cup and even played their Round 1 match against Namibia in Geelong. However, he was ruled out of the remainder of the tournam?ent due to injury.

“Sex Crimes Squad detectives have charged a Sri Lankan national following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Sydney’s east last week,” the report said.

According to the NSW police, a 29-year-old woman ??was sexually assaulted at a residence in Rose Bay earlier this week.

“The woman met with the man after communicating with him for a number of days via an online dating application; it’s alleged he then sexually assaulted her on the evening of Wednesday, 2 November 2022.

“As part of ongoing investigations, a crime scene examination was undertaken by specialist police at an address in Rose Bay yesterday. Following further inquiries, a 31-year-old man was arrested at a hotel on Sussex Street, Sydney, shortly before 1am today (Sunday 6 November 2022),” the report added.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC??) too issu??ed a statement after the news broke out on several Australian TV channels.

“Sri Lanka Cricket confirms that it was notified by the ICC that player Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested on the allegations of sexual assault of a woman in Sydney, and Mr. Gunathilaka is due to appear in court tomorrow (7 November 2022),” the statement said.

“SLC will closely monitor the proceedings in court and, in consultation with the ICC, will expeditiously initiate a thorough inquiry into the matter and take stern action against the player if found guilty.”

Sri Lanka’s hopes of reaching the semifinals of T20 World Cup 2022 came to an end following their defeat against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday.

Gunathilaka, who made his Test debut in 2017 against India, played eight matches and scored 299 runs with the help of two fifties. His last fixture in the whites came against New Zealand in 2018 in Christchurch.

Gunathilaka ‘s Test statistics might appear average, but his limited-overs career has been more fruitful. In 44 ODIs, the 30-year-old has scored 1520 runs at an average of 36.19, with two hundreds and 10 half-centuries. Similarly, in T20Is, Gunathilaka has scored 568 runs in 30 matches at a strike rate of 121.62, including three fifties.

Even in the Lanka Premier League (LPL), the left-handed batter has impressive numbers. The Panadura-born is currently the leading run-getter in LPL,?? with 702 runs to his ??credit in 20 matches.

SLC names three rules regarding retirement culture

According to the country’s cricket board’s latest media release, players will have to provide a three-month notice period if they intend to hang their boots.

Fur??ther, the No Obj?ection Certificates (NOCs) to play in overseas leagues will be provided to only those retired players who have completed the six months of their retirement.

Additionally, only those retired cricketers will be permitted to play in LPL who have played 80% of domestic matches before the? start of any season of the exciting T20 tournament.

“National players who intend to retire from national cricket should provide three months’ notice to Sri Lanka cricket of their intention to retire.”

“Retired national players who wish to obtain “No Objection Certificates” (NOCs) to play in overseas franchise leagues will only be issued to such players who have completed six months of their effective date of retirement.”

“Retired national players will be considered eligible for local leagues such as the LPL, only if they have played 80% of matches in the Domestic Cricket Competitions conducted in the season prior to the conducting of the league.”

Danushka Gunathilaka’s dismissal during the first ODI between West Indies and Sri Lanka in Antigua has sparked outrage ??on social media.

The Sri Lankan opener was given out for ‘obstructing the field’ in the 22nd over of the first innings. Kieron Pollard bowl??ed a short ball which Gunat?hilaka fended away.

Pathum Nissanka set off for a single but Gunathilaka, after taking a few steps, sent him back and moved back into his own crease. However, when Gunathilaka was stepping back, the ball deflected away from Pollard’s reach with the underside of the batsman’s foot.

Pollard immediately appealed and on-field umpire Joe Wilson gave a soft signal of ‘out’ before TV umpire Joe Wilson ruled that Gunathilaka had deli?berately attempted to foil the run out.

It all happened in the 22nd over of the first innings when Gunathilaka took a couple of steps out to take a single off a Kieron Pollard delivery but then decided against it. When he moved to get back into his crease, he kicked the ball away from Pollard’s reach with the underside of his left foot.

Pollard was seemingly dismayed at Gunathilaka’s actions and appealed against the left-handed batsman for obstructing the field.

On-field umpire Joe Wilson referred the call to the third umpire while giving a soft signal of ‘out’.

After ??going through the replays in slow-motion, the decision was upheld.

According to Clause 37.1.1 of ICC Playing Conditions, a batsman can be given out obstructing the field if “he wilfully attempts to obstruct or distract the fielding side by word or action.”

Gunathilaka played fluently for his 55 off 61 before getting dismissed. He hit seven fours and shared a 105-run opening stand with captain Dimuth Karunaratne, who scored 51 off 61.

The Sri Lankan innings lost their way after Gunathilaka’s dismissal and from 112/2 the tourists were all out for 232 in 49 overs.

The Men in Maroon surpassed that total in 47 overs with Shai Hope scoring 110 off 132 and his opening partner Evin Lewis adding 65 (90).
