In the wake of Ravichandran Ashwin‘s sudden announcement of retirement from international cricket following the drawn third Test at the Gabba, much attention has been drawn to the future of other veteran players. Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma addressed queries regarding the possible return of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara to the nat??ional team du?ring a light-hearted yet insightful press conference.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement and its impact

Ashwin, one of India’s finest off-spinners, declared his retirement from all formats of international cricket, effective immediately after the conclusion of the Gabba Test. His decision has left a significant void in the Indian squad, not only for his wicket-taking abilities but also for his experience and strategic acumen on the field. Ashwin’s retirement has sparked discussions about the team’s spin bowling options moving forward and the potential reshaping of the squad’s dynamics.

During the press conference, Rohit humorously clarified the situation regarding the retirement of his old buddies from the side. Rohit cla??rified that Rahane and Pujara have not announced their retirements and emphasized that they can still make a comeback to the team, as the doors remain open for them. He added that only Ashwin has officially retired, and jokingly urged the media not t??o misinterpret his statements, saying it could lead to misunderstandings.

“By the way, Ajinkya Rahane hasn’t retired. You guys will get me killed. Pujara hasn’t announced his retirement yet. Only Ash won’t be with us because he has officially announced it, but the other two can come back anytime; the door isn’t closed for anyone,” said Rohit in a fun interaction with reporters.

This statement not only highlighted the playful side of the Indian captain but also indicated an openness to bringing back seaso??ned players if the situation demands.

India’s captain Rohit Sharma‘s ongoing struggles with form continued on Day 4 of the third Test match between Australia and India at the Gabba in Brisbane as the skipper, once again, failed to make a significant contribution with the bat. His persistent low scores have raised concerns as Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara shared a significant insight into the cause of Rohit’s struggles.

Cheteshwar Pujara points out the major reason behind Rohit Sharma’s poor form

Pujara highlighted that Rohit, who is accustomed to opening the innings, is now batting at number 6 for the team’s needs. However, he believes this shift can create doubt and disrupt momentum, as adjusting to a lower batting position after regularly opening is challenging.

“He has been opening the innings, now he’s batting at number 6. That is for the team, but I still feel that when you are so much used to opening the innings and when you have to wait, then you put yourself in that doubt. I mean, it doesn’t help you when you’re opening innings and you suddenly start batting at number 6. So that you don’t get that momentum either,” Pujara said on Star Sports.

Rohit Sharma falls to Pat Cummins’ precise bowling

Rohit was dismissed cheaply once again in India’s first innings during the 24th over. Pat Cummins, with his trademark precision, delivered a probing ball outside off-stump, which lured the Indian skipper into an uncertain forward movement. Rohit’s lack of footwork proved costly as he edged the ball straight into the gloves of wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

The dismissal marked another low score for M??umbai lad in the ongoing series. Across three innings so far, the right handed batter has managed to score just 19 runs, with his highest ?being 10. The Indian captain’s inconsistency with the bat has added pressure on the middle order, which has been struggling against a relentless Australian bowling attack.

India are set to clash with Australia in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Gabba in Brisb?ane, commencing on December 14, 2024. Following a disappointing ten-wicket defeat in the Pink Ball Test, the Indian team is eager?? to rebound and take the lead in the series, which is currently tied at 1-1. With both teams vying for supremacy, the stakes are high, and changes to India’s lineup could be pivotal.

Cheteshwar Pujara’s strategic suggestion to change the playing XI

In light of the recent loss, veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara has proposed a significant alteration to India’s playing XI. He advocates for Washington Sundar to replace Ravichandran Ashwin, citing Ashwin’s underwhelming performance in Adelaide where he managed only one wicket for 53 runs across 18 overs. Pujara believes that Sundar’s all-round capabilities could bolster India’s batting order while providing a reliable off-spin option. Sundar’s previous contributions during India’s historic win at the Gabba in 2021 further strengthen his case, as he played a crucial role with both bat and ball during that memorable match.

“I feel only one change ??might happen. Since the bat?ting wasn’t good, Washington Sundar can come in place of R Ashwin. Should someone come in place of Harshit Rana? In my opinion, no. You backed him and he performed well in the first match,”?/em>Pujara stated on Star Sports.

Pujara stands by Harshit Rana for the upcoming Test

Despite some skepticism surrounding Harshit Ranas performance in Adelaide – where he conceded 86 runs in 16 overs – Pujara has come to his defense. Rana had made an impressive debut in Perth with figures of 3/48 and has shown promise with his ability to generate bounce and pace. Pujara argues that Rana deserves another chance, especially on the lively Brisbane pitch, which could favour his bowling style. Retaining Rana could be a strategic move for India as they aim to exploit the conditions at the Gabba.

“He is a good bowler. You cannot drop him just because one match went bad,?he added.

The Gabba: A fortress for Australia

The Gabba has historically been a challenging venue for visiting teams, with Australia boasting an impressive record there, particularly before Christmas. ?The pitch curator has indicated that this Test will feature a traditional Gabba wicket known for its pace and bounce, which could pose difficulties for Indian batters if they do not adapt quickly. India’s last victory at this ground came in January 2021 when they broke Australia’s long-standing unbeaten streak. The memories of that match serve as both inspiration and pressure as they prepare for this crucial encounter.

India and Australia are gearing up for the much anticipated third Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024/25. Scheduled to take place at the iconic Gabba stadium in Brisbane, the match will run from December 14 to 18. With the series poised at 1-1 after two enthralling contests, this match holds immense significance, not just for the series win but also for qualification to the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final. Both t?eams have much to prove, and fans expect an enthralling battle between two cricketing giants.

India’s defeat in the Adelaide Test against Australia

Australia made a strong statement in the second Test at Adelaide, coming back from a 295-run loss in the first Test at Perth to claim a comprehensive 10-wicket victory. The win was powered by stellar performances from key Australian players. Mitchell Starc was the standout bowler, taking 8 wickets across the match, while Pat Cummins, the Australian?? captain, contributed significantly with 7 wickets of his own.

The batting side was led by Travis Head, who played an extraordinary innings, scoring 140 runs off 141 balls in the first innings, and Marnus Labuschagne,?? who added a solid 64 runs off 126 balls. This well-rou??nded effort saw Australia level the series and set the stage for an intense clash in Brisbane.

India, on the other hand, had a mixed performance in the first two Tests. While they showed promise in the opening match at Perth, which they won by a commanding 295-run margin, their batting lineup struggled to replicate that form in Adelaide. The team’s inability to post competitive totals, combined with Australia’s strong bowling attack, saw them suffer a resounding defeat.

Cheteshwar Pujara’s insights for the Brisbane Test: A potential change for India

Cheteshwar Pujara, the seasoned Indian batter turned commentator, has weighed in on the potential changes to the Indian side for the third Test. Speaking on the topic, Pujara emphasized that, in his opinion, the only change that might be necessary would involve bringing in Washington Sundar in place of Ravichandran Ashwin. Pujara, known for his thoughtful a??nalysis??, shared his views during an interview on Star Sports.

“I feel the only change might happen. Since the batting wasn’t good, Washington Sundar can come in place of R Ashwin. Should someone come in place of Harshit Rana? In my opinion – no. You backed him and he performed well in the first match. The second match was bad for him,” said Pujara.

Also READ: AUS vs IND: Should India drop Harshit Rana for the third Te?st against Australia?

The cricketer-turned-commentator stated that Harshit Rana shouldn’t be dropped for one poor performance, highlighting his value as a bowler. He emphasized the need for team support to maintain his confidence. The only potential change could be replacing Ashwin with Sundar to strengthen the batting lineup.

“However, the team will have to support him. He is a good bowler. You cannot drop him just because one match went bad. We will have to see what the team management thinks but probably only change for me – if they feel the batting lineup needs strengthening, Washington can play for Ashwin,” Pujara added.

Sundar had shown his value as an all-rounder in the first Test in Perth, contributing effectively both with the ball and the ba??t. In the first innings, Sundar managed to take two crucial wickets, while in the seco??nd innings, he made a valuable contribution of 29 runs, helping India secure a 295-run win. Despite this performance, Sundar was replaced by Ashwin in the Adelaide Test, a move that did not pay off as India suffered a heavy loss.

Harshit Rana: A retained option?

One of the key points raised? by Pujara is the matter of Rana, who had mixed performances in the first two Tests. Rana, who made his debut in the series, showcased promising signs in Perth wit??h figures of 3/48 in the first innings and a total of four wickets across the match. However, he had an indifferent outing in Adelaide, failing to take any wickets and conceding runs at a high rate. Despite this, Pujara stands firm on his belief that Rana should not be dropped:

“Rana picked up four wickets, including impressive figures of 3/48 in the first innings, in the first Test in Perth. However, he was wicketless in Adelaide and proved quite expensive apart from bagging a pair with the bat. You backed him and he performed well in the first match. The second match was bad for him. The team will have to support him. He is a good bowler. You cannot drop him just because one match went bad,” Pujara concluded.

India are set to take on Australia in the secon??d Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting December 6 at the Adelaide Oval. With momentum firmly on their side after a dominant 295-run victory in the first Test in Perth, India looks poised to extend their lead in the five-match series.

What should be India’s bowling combination for the Pink-Ball Test against Australia?

As the team management deliberates over the playing XI for the pink-ball Test, veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara has called for consistency in the bowling attack that excelled in Perth. India’s pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Harshit Rana, complemented by spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar, dismantled the Australian batting lineup in a? clinical performance.

“There’s no doubt about it. This combination has delivered results,” Pujara said during an interview with Star Sports. “Bumrah was exceptional, Siraj bowled with great control, and Harshit impressed despite it being his debut. He pitched the ball up and maintained discipline, which is crucial in Australian conditions.”

“In Australia, it’s easy for bowlers to get carried away with the extra pace and bounce”: Cheteshwar Pujara

Rana, who debuted in Perth, earned special praise from Pujara for his maturity under pressure. “In Australia, it’s easy for bowlers to get carried away with the extra pace and bounce, but Rana stayed focused, consistently targeting the right lengths and the top of the off-stump. That kind of temperament is invaluable, and I believe we should stick with him,” Pujara added.

The right-handed batter also highlighted the importance of Sundar in the playing XI, emphasizing his ability to contribute with both bat and ball. “Washi didn’t start his spell on the best note but adapted quickly and picked up a couple of crucial wickets. His variations in pace were impressive. Additionally, his batting depth is invaluable, especially if we lose early wickets,” Pujara said.

Sundar proved his worth in the first Test, delivering economical spells and picking up two key wickets in the second innings. ?His steady performance with the ball and ability to anchor the lower order make him a vital asset for ?the team.

The upcoming second Test, a day-night affair, presents unique challenges, especially with the pink ball under lights. Both teams will need to adjust their strategies accordingly. With Australia eager to bounce back and India ri??ding high on confidence, an intriguing contest awaits at the picturesque Adelaide Oval.

Team India head into the Pink Ball Test in Adelaide brimming with confidence after their commanding win in Perth. The victory, marked by a clinical all-round performance, has provided the team with much-needed momentum as they gear up for the second T??est against Australia. While India’s bowling attack performed exceptionally in Perth, the batting unit showcased depth and resilience, setting the stage for strategic adjustments to suit the challenging conditions under lights in Ad??elaide.

Where should KL Rahul bat? Cheteshwar Pujara answers

A key topic of discussion in the Indian lineup is KL Rahul’s batting position. In the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, Rahul opened the innings in Perth and left a strong impression with his composed knock on a challenging pitch. His performance provided India with ??a solid start and showcased his ??exceptional skills.

With Rohit now rejoining the squad to lead the visitors in the second Test, the question arises: where should Rahul slot into the batting order? Sharing his thoughts on the matter, senior Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara offered two perspectives. Pujara’s first suggestion ??was to?? let Rahul continue opening the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, while Rohit moves down to bat at No. 3.

“For some reason, if we can carry on with the same batting order, like KL and Yashasvi to open, Rohit could come in at three, and Shubman could come in at five,” Pujara said in a conversation with ESPNcricinfo.

Alternatively, Pujara proposed that if Rohit opts to open, Rahul should take the No. 3 position, as his batting style is? best suited for the top order and should not be pushed further down.

“If Rohit wants to open, KL should bat at No. 3. Nothing later than that. He has to bat top of the order, because it suits his game really well. I hope we don’t tinker around with that,” added Pujara.

Pujara discusses batting order of Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant

Pujara also addressed the conundrum of Shubman Gill‘s ideal position. He recommended slotting Gill at No. 5, citing his ability to handle different game situations.

“Ideally No. 5. Even if we lose two wickets early, he can negotiate the new ball. But if he comes in after 25 or 30 overs, he can play his natural game,” observed Pujara.

This adjustment would likely push Rishabh Pant, who batted at No. 5 in Perth, down to No. 6. Pujara explained the tactical move, stating, “Gill walking in earlier saves Rishabh Pant for the old ball. [Pant] doesn’t have to face the new ball. I wouldn’t want him to bat when the ball is hard and new.”

Such a batting shuffle would mean Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel could make way for mo?re experienced players in the lineup, enhancing India’s de??pth in batting.

India‘s final assignment in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle will be a tour to Australia for the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), scheduled to commence in???? November 2024 and conclude in January 2025. This five-Test series is set to capture significant attention from cricket enthusiasts worldwide. India have recently been one of the few teams to challenge Australia on their home turf, having clinched series victories in both the 2018-19 and 2020-21 tours with a 2-1 margin. The upcoming series is expected to be a gripping spectacle.

The legacy of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane

India’s previous tours to Australia featured notable contributions from Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, who were instrumental in India’s middle order. Pujara, with 103 Test matches, accumulated 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60, including 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries, with his highest score being an unbeaten 206. Rahane, who played 85 Tests, scored 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, including 12 centuries and 26 fifties, with a top score of 188. Together, they formed a dependable middle-order partnership.

The decline and selection changes

Following India’s historic win at The Gabba in Brisbane in January 2021, both Pujara and Rahane experienced a noticeable decline in performance, leading to their exclusion from Test selection for over a year. Rahane’s last Test appearance was against the West Indies in July 2023, while Pujara last played against Australia in June 2023 at The Oval. The national selectors have since moved on from them, seekin??g fresh talent for the team?.

Dinesh Karthik names potential replacement ahead of BGT 2024-25

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Dinesh Karthik, the former Indian wicketkeeper-batter, has suggested that Shubman Gill and Sarfaraz Khan could be ideal candidates to fill the void left by Pujara and Rahane. Both players demonstrated their prowess in the home Test series against England earlier this year, and Karthik believed they are strong contenders for the upcoming BGT in Australia. Karthik acknowledged the challenge of replacing two stalwarts like Pujara and Rahane but expressed confidence in Gill and Khan’s ability to rise to the occasion.

Karthik remarked, “Shubman Gill and Sarfaraz Khan—both of these batters have excelled against England in the recent home series. I anticipate both will be selected for the Australia tour and will aim to perform at their best. It remains to be seen if they can fill the significant shoes of Ajinkya and Pujara, but they possess the quality and caliber to succeed,”

Before heading to Australia, India will host Bangladesh and New Zealand in a two-match an?d three-match Test series, respectively. The series against Bangladesh is set to b??egin on September 19 in Chennai.

In a spectacular display of skill and determination, India’s out-of-favour batter Cheteshwar Pujara recently stole the spotlight with a phenomenal double century during Saurashtra‘s opening Ranji Trophy 2024 match against Jharkhand.

Despite being sidelined from the Indian Test squad, Pujara’s outstanding performance not only earned Saurashtra a commanding position in the game but also set a new record, making him the first Asian to reach the milestone of 17 double centuries in first-class cricket.

Saurashtra’s domination

The match at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot, witnessed an intriguing battle between Saurashtra and Jharkhand. Opting to bowl after winning the toss, Saurashtra’s bowlers, led by Chirag Jani‘s sensational five-wicket haul, efficiently bundled out Jharkhand for a modest total of 142 runs in 49 overs.

Cheteshwar Pujara’s supremacy

When it was time for Saurashtra to bat, Pujara emerged as the linchpin of the innings, making it a challenging day for the Jharkhand bowlers. With an impressive knock of 243 runs off 356 balls, including 30 fours, Pujara showcased his class and resilience. Supported by Prerak Mankad‘s significant contribution, Saurashtra declared their innings with a formidable score of 578 runs.

Fans’ enthusiasm and request to BCCI

The cricketing world was quick to react to Pujara’s stellar performance, and fans showered the veteran batter with praise. South Africa are making waves in the ODI World Cup 2023, establishing their dominance with a series of consistent performances. The Proteas have been on a dream run, securing four wins out of five matches in the tournament. Led by Temba Bavuma, South Africa currently occupies the second spot in the points table ??and boasts the best net run rate in the competition, standing at an impressive +2.370.

Battering their way to glory

South Africa’s supremacy in this edition of the World Cup can be attributed to their batting prowess. The Proteas’ batters have been in outstanding form, resulting in the team posting massive scores. On three occasions, South Africa has surpassed the 380-run mark in the ongoing multi-team tournament. They hold the distinction of being the only team to breach the 400-run milestone in World Cup 2023, achieving a formidable 428/5 against Sri Lanka on October 7.

Pujara’s observations

The question arises: what is the secret behind South Africa’s effective strategy for amassing massive totals in this World Cup? Senior Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara has analyzed their approach and identified the Proteas’ smart tactics. Pujara emphasized that South Africa’s batting strategy is characterized by thoughtful planning. They don’t merely go after the bowlers right from the outset but carefully consider their approach. Pujara pointed out that they know precisely when to accelerate, when to build partnerships, and which bowlers to target.

“They are doing it smartly. If you look at their batting, I mean, it’s not that they are just going after the bowlers from the first ball onwards; there is a thought process about it. They know when to accelerate, they know when to build a partnership, the bowlers to target, and I think they are doing it really well,” ex?plained Pujara in a video shared by ESPNcricinfo on X.

Late-innings mastery

Pujara further noted that South Africa’s strategy includes not losing wickets early in the innings, which positions them well to capitalize in the slog overs.

“If you don’t have enough wickets in the last 10 overs, then you are always in trouble. They are ensuring that even if the run rate is not on the higher side within 40 overs, they can always make it up in the last 10 (overs),” added Pujara.
