On Saturday, Cricket Australia (CA) said that it is open to welcome new evidence in relation to the infamous ball-tampering scandal after the recent comments made by top-order batter Cameron Bancroft. The Western Australian dropped bombshells on Friday, hinting that the Aussie bowlers were aware of the whole epi??sode.

While speaking to the Guardian, Bancroft, who is currently in England to play county cricket representing Durham, bowlers’ knowledge of the sandpaper saga is “self-explanatory”.

“All I wanted to do was to be responsible and accountable for my own actions and part. Obviously, what I did benefits bowlers, and the awareness around that, probably, is self-explanatory,” the 28-year-old had said.

Bancroft was banned for nine months by CA for his direct involvement in the ball-tampering plot. He was caught red-handed by broadcast cameras using sandpaper on the ball before putting the evidence down his packets during the Cape Town Test against South Africa in 2018. The then skipper Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner were also removed from their leadership titles and sl?apped with a year-??long suspension.

Now, CA has made it clear that it is ready ?to reinvestigate the matter if anyone has more knowledge about the subject. The apex Australian board further added the investigat??ion conducted post the sandpaper saga was satisfactory, but it would still relook the issue if any new information emerges.

“CA has maintained all along that if anyone is in possession of new information in regards to the Cape Town Test of 2018, they should come forward and present it,” CA said in a statement as quoted by Cricket.com.au.

“The investigation conducted at the time was detailed and comprehensive. Since then, no one has presented new information to CA that casts doubt on the investigation’s findings,” the statement added.

Bancroft, who last played in the Ashes 2019, asserted he still hopes to come back in the red-ball squad. He said: “That’s a goal and a door I haven’t shut for myself,” Bancroft said when asked about the possibility of a Test recall. But it’s also something I’m not mentally stressing about and obsessing about either.”

Australian batsman Cameron Bancroft, who was involved in the sandpaper gate in South Africa, has hinted that the Aussie bowlers knew about ball-tampering tactics going on in the te?am.

The then captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and Bancroft were involved in the cheating plot in the Cape Town Test in 2018.

Smith and Warner were handed a year-long suspension, while Bancroft was suspended for nine months. Warner was also banned from lea??ding the te??am for life, while Smith for two years.

The coach Darren Lehmann, high-performance chief Pat Howard, and Cricket Australia (CA) board director Mark Taylor all resigned in the following months.

Speaking to the Guardian in an interview, Cameron suggested that it was “self explanatory” that the bowlers we??re aware of the th??ings happening in the team.

“Yeah, look, all I wanted to do was to be responsible and accountable for my own actions and part. Yeah, obviously what I did benefits bowlers and the awareness around that, probably, is self-explanatory,” the 29-year-old said.

“I guess one thing I learnt through the journey and being responsible is that’s where the buck stops [with Bancroft himself]. Had I had better awareness I would have made a much better decision,” he added.

When further asked about the involvement of bowlers in the scandal, Bancroft said, “Uh â€?yeah, look, I think, yeah, I think it’s pretty probably self-explanatory.”

The Western Australian admitted that he regrets what he has done and was disappointed in ?his action?s.

“In purely cricketing terms it makes me feel a little shit. I was just settling and then, of course, it was lost. I was obviously disappointed because I’d let the team down and carried out an act that completely compromised my values. But it came down for me just when I was really improving at that level. It felt like I’d thrown a lot away. I hadn’t got a Test 100 yet but I felt I was on my way to achieving that, so I was extremely disappointed to give that up. But that’s how important that part of my life was then. I’ve come to learn that it is important but it doesn’t dictate my life in the same way,” asserted the 28-year-old.

“I invested too much to the point where I lost control of my values. What had become important to me was being liked, being well valued, feeling really important to my teammates, like I was contributing something by using sandpaper on a cricket ball. That’s something I don’t think I even understood until that mistake happened. But it’s part of the journey and a hard lesson I needed to learn,” Bancroft added further.

The Sandpaper Gate during the Cape Town Test of Australia’s 2018 tour to South Africa, shocked the cricketing fraternity worldwide.

The third umpire of the match, Ian Gould, was the first few ?ones to access the visuals of ??Cameron Bancroft using sandpaper to tamper the ball.

Gould came out conceding that the Australian cricket team played the ‘hard way’ in an uncontrollable manner two to three years before the Sandpaper Gate.

“I didn’t realise what the repercussions would be. If you look back on it now, Australia were out of control probably two years, maybe three years, before that, but not in this sense. Maybe – behavioural, chatty, being pretty average people,” Gould told Daily Telegraph recently.

Many cricket pundits slammed the Aussie culture, which ultimately led to the culmination of the scandal at Cape Town.
“But when it came into my earpiece I didn’t think the prime minister of Australia was going to come tumbling down on these three guys. All I thought was – Jesus, how do I put this out to the guys on the field without making it an overreaction,” added Gould.

After inspecting the status of the ball, Gould stated that the sandpaper had no major effect on the ball. “If you saw the balls, you would get it completely wrong. At the end of the day, the sandpaper didn’t get on that ball. They were working to get the ball to be pristine. Once they’d got one side bigger and shinier, that’s when the sandpaper was coming in,” the 62-year-old revealed.

In the aftermath of the infamous scandal, the disgraced Aussie trio of Steve Smith, David Warner ??and Cameron Bancroft served 8-12 months ban?? sanctioned by Cricket Australia (CA).

The incident even led to the Australian Pr??ime Minister giving scathing comments on the players?, which blew the matter out of proportion.

Before the start of Ashes 2019, Australi?an legend Steve Waugh said Cameron Bancroft is the best short-leg fielder he has ever seen. And on Thursday (August 15), Ba??ncroft proved why Waugh went gaga over him.

The 26-year-old took a breathtaking catch to dismiss England opener Rory Burns in the first innings of the ongoing second Test at Lord’s.

Burns must have thought he was safe after?? he sliced a Pat Cummins delivery in the air. The ball did not stay in the air for long and was also at the left-?hand of Bancroft. Not a single England supporter present in the stadium would have expected the young Aussie fielder to pull off the catch.

However, Bancroft went on to take a blinder and left every??one shellshocked.

Australia have announced their 17-man squad on Frida?y for the five-match Test Ashes series against England, starting on Aug?ust 1 at Edgbaston.

Former captain Steve Smith and David Warner have been included in the squad following their impressive run i??n the recently concluded World Cup. Also, Cameron Bancroft, who was banned along with Smith and Warner in the ball-tampering scandal, makes his comeback into the team.

“They’re welcomed back with open arms, there’s no doubt about it,” the selection chairman Trevor Hohns said in Southampton. “Steve Smith and Dave Warner, they’re very good cricketers, world-class players. It was naturally we would include them now they’re available again. And Cameron Bancroft has had quite a good summer here playing county cricket plus he played very well here in the recent game.

“[We were] always thinking about him [Bancroft] but needed to get our eyes on him because it’s fair to say no one had seen much of him since his return. He played some Shield cricket towards the end of last season back home but more importantly, we wanted to see how he was going in particular over here.

“But I don’t know if you saw the way he played in this game out here just now, in very trying conditions. He’s the type of player we think we need in our Australian side, he’s tough, he’s enthusiastic, his work ethic is fantastic. And he’s infectious. We need people like that, people who want to continue to improve their game, and who are hard-nosed and tough. He fits the ball. Yes, [this warm-up was key to his recall].”

Joe Burns and Kurtis Patterson, who scored cent?uries against Sri Lanka in February have missed out for the inclusions of Warner and Smith.

Australia’s squad for the Ashes:

Tim Paine (c & wk), David Warner, Steve Smith, Cameron Bancroft, Pat Cummins, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade (wk).

Veteran Brendon McCullum too?k an absolute screamer at deep long-on?? to dismiss Cameron Bancroft during a Big Bash League (BBL 08) match between Perth Scorchers and Brisbane Heat at the Perth Stadium on Saturday night.

Bancroft looked to hit a six off Heat’s medium pacer Ben Cutting but failed to get the height as well as the distance.

McCullum, however, had?? to sprint for a few meters in front as the ball was dying on him. The 37-year-old showcased his cat-like reflexes and brilliantly caught the ball inches above the ground.
