In a major restructuring move, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed Brendon McCullum as the new head coach of the England men’s white-ball team, in addition to his current role as Test team head coach. The 43-year-old New Zealander has also extended his contract until the end of 2027, solidifying his commitment to English cricket.

Unified coaching structure for England

McCullum, who has been at the helm of England’s Test team since May 2022, will officially take over the white-ball side starting January 2025, in time for the tour of India and the ICC Champions Trophy. He expressed his enth?usiasm fo??r the new challenge.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Test team, and I’m excited to extend my role to include the white-ball sides,” the for??mer NZ skipper said in his official state?ment.

“This new challenge is something I’m ready to embrace, and I’m eager to work closely with Jos and the team to build on the strong foundations that are already in place,” he added.

The decision to unify the coaching structure under McCullum’s leadership was influenced by Rob Key, the managing director of England Men’s Cricket.

McCullum building on strong foundations

After Matthew Mott‘s resignation, former England captain Eoin Morgan has endorsed Brendon McCullum as the ideal candidate to take over as the new white-ball coach for the England cricket team. Assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the home summer as England prepares for a multi-format white-ball series against Australia.

Eoin Morgan shortlists his candidates 

Mott, who led England to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup, has resigned. Trescothick, the former assista??nt coach, has been named the interim head coach. Morgan believes McCullum would be a gr??eat fit to lead the white-ball team, given his proven success and experience in the Test format. Additionally, Trescothick will oversee the team as they look ahead to the Champions Trophy campaign in Pakistan in 2025.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Thursday as quoted by Wisden, Morgan called McCullum as one of the ‘Best coaches in the world’. He also named Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, and Stephen Fleming as his other potential candidates.

“In my eyes at the moment, you would go to Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming…and Brendon McCullum,” Morgan said, while lis?ting the?? potential candidates for the role.

Notably, Dravid recently guided Team India to 2024 T20 World Cup title, while Ponting found success with the Washington Freedom in the recently concluded 2024 Major League Cricket (MLC). Fleming has been a long time head coach of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL. Similarly, McCullum is the curren?t England red-ball coach.

“I say that because I believe he is one of the best coaches in the world. You see what he did with the Test team. Yes, the big question will be how he makes it fit over the course of the 12 months. But again, from Rob Key’s point of view, he needs to make it attractive,” added Morgan.

“My first reaction is it’s a bit of a shame, but not unexpected. Ultimately you’re judged by results. Results started very well, on the back of continuing the Eoin Morgan/Trevor Bayliss era… they had that immediate success, winning the T20 World Cup in 2022. But since then, it’s gone completely in the other direction. The 50-over World Cup [in 2023] was a poor, poor performance, it really was. They were so far off the mark, in terms of results and decision-making,” Hussain concluded.
